As a result of the information acquired by this committee, a yearbook became a possibility. But it was not until December I, after five hundred annuals had been paid for in cash, that definite plans could go forward. An inexperienced but deter- mined staff was chosen and immediately began work on The ll'arri0r. Lest we forget was selected as an appropriate theme for the yearbook in tribute to those from our school who were killed in the service of our country during XVorld VVar ll. ln a less serious vein, we of the staff hope that The ll'arri0r will contain between its covers many reminders of a memorable year in Daniel Vllebster High School. With the shortage of available manpower handicapping them during their '45 foot- ball season, the Webster VVarriors enjoyed a mediocre season, finishing in third place in the Oklahoma Six Conference after winning four games and tying one on a nine- gaine schedule. George Broad, along with his basketball and office duties, served as head coach with Robert Harris ably assisting as line coach. Curtis Turner coached the BU squad. The WHl'Ti01'S began with a pre-season warm-up in the form of an all-city round- robin game in which two ten-minute halves were played by each school. VVebster played the other two high schools to a scoreless tie. Regular season play started the following week with a game at Nfuskogee. There the Webster eleven broke loose and wound up on the long end of a 26-7 count. They traveled to Sapulpa on the next Friday only to be stopped 7-0, in one of the most exciting games -of the year. Tulsa Central was next on the schedule with a game at Skelly Stadium. Here the Webster team lost a heart breaker to their cross-town rivals, 14-7. The game was well-played and a hard one to lose. The next clash was with the defending state champions, Oklahoma City Classen. at the capital. This was the worst defeat of the season for the Websterites as the Comets rolled to a 39-6 victory. Coming to the Webster' stadium for the first time during the season, Webster played host to the Bartlesville VVildcats and handed them a 20-6 loss. The next week brought Sand Springs to the home stadium where the Webstei' team hit their peak and trounced the Sandites, 31-0. Webster hit the road for the next gridiron contest played at Okmulgee. Although the Bulldogs scored first, the Warriors came from behind and won the game 2-l-6. ln the last game of the season for the Warriors, Tulsa NVill Rogers, runner-up for the state championship, won the game 27-7. Although winning only seven games out of a seventeen game schedule, the VVebster Warriors made use of six returning letternien on which they hased their team to throw scares and upsets upon favored opponents dur- ing the l9-l5--lo season. Under the leadership of Coach George Broad, the Vvebster quintet had a rather in and out season. They lost many fairly close games, such as the ones to Bartlesville, 27-26, and to Ukmulgee, 23-2l. VVebster closed PAGE the season in fifth place in the Oklahoma Six Confer- ence as a result of losing the close ones. ln the city race, the Websterites had to be content with third. Conference wins came from winning two from Sa- pulpa, one from Hartlesville, and one win from Will Rogers. Losses came from Kluslcogee, Tulsa Central, and Olcmulgee, all three of which held two wins over the VVarriors, who also lost one each to Rogers and liartlesville. Non-conference play found the War1'iors trampling the Sand Springs Saudites twice and Clare- more onceg but Van Buren, Arkansas, turned the Wai'- rior basketeers hack in two encounters. In the regional tournament held on the Will Rogers court, Webster won the first round game with Clare- niore, 32-21. The next night a strong Tulsa Central, favored to win the tourney, barely elced out on the VVarriors in a closely contested affair, but the loss elimi- nated the westsiders from the tournament. 66 WRESTLING Cnder the capable direction of Coach Curtis Turner, the Daniel Yvehster matmen hit their peak during the state tournament and placed third in the meet to redeem a somewhat unsuccessful season. A The YVarrior grapplers Won but two of eight matches in the regular season. VVebster started the season by losing a close one to Perry, 10-I 5. They came hack in the next match to trample a Ponca City team 27-9. The other VVarrior win was from Bristow, 26-6. VVebster's cross- town rivals, Tulsa VVill Rogers and Tulsa Central, both defeated Webstel' by large margins. Blackwell, later state champions, administered the other defeat by a score of 25-9. The state meet was held in the Daniel VV:-hster gym- nasium this year for the first time in the history of the school. Prospects are excellent for a return engagement of the state meet for next year.
