HELEN POST WRIGHT BAKER CONGER Goqcfm Gaciettf The Coggin Society was organized on the campus of Daniel Baker College in 1911, and was named in memory of our benefactor, S. R. Coggin. The purpose of this organization is to support the Alma Mater in all worthy causes. It is the sister organization of the B Associa- Membership in the Coggin Society is con- fined to girls who are upper classmen. Any freshman girl must be acceptable to all of the active members of the Society in order to be pledged. Those girls who pledge the society are on probation for one year at the end of which time, they may be accepted into active membership. Social activities for the year 1947-48 have been numerous with each being a big success. The year was started out with a GSt Acquaint- ed Tea in the home of Nelda Sessions. Initia- tion of pledges was held in the home of Marty Snyder and a Christmas party was held at the home of pledge Vera Taylor. The annual Ban- quet for the football boys sponsored by the Society was followed by an all-student dance. The year was rounded out in fine shape by a Slumber Party for members of the Society at the Snyder cabin on Lake Brownwood, and the annual picnic at Lake Brownwood. When Coach Weidman's freshman team took the field this fall, it was the first time Daniel Baker had been represented on the gridiron since 1941. Likeable and highly respected by all those who have worked under him is our Coach Cotton Weidman. Jack Allen Line Coach Hue Ben Student Ma Ray 1 Baker Conger Quarterback Hamilton, Texas James Willingham Guard Stephenville, Texas Jack Woods Tackle ownwood, Texa: Pryor Winn End Garland, Texas David Wilson End Gainesville, Texc George Day Center Brownwood, Texas Daniel Baker Hill Billies, playing their first football game since 1941, ran roughshod over a Panhandle A. M. team from Okla- homa by a score of 26 to 0. Sparked by tall, lanky Bill Lambert, right end, the Billies scored midway in the first quarter when Lambert took the ball on an end around play for ten yards and the marker. Lambert sent the ball through the uprights for the extra point. The Billies caught fire in the third quarter when Lambert again took the ball on a 25 yard pass play from Conger and scored. A few minutes later Lambert again took a beautiful pass from Kenneth Dismuke for a 41 yard touchdown. Kenneth Dismuke made a touchdown after a long drive and the Billies capped the game 26 to 0. Outweighed more than 18 pounds per man on the line the fighting Hill Billies were blanked by a score of 27 to 0 by the Sul Ross Lobos. Thouqh the Billies showed lots of fight and spunk, it was just too much for them Outstanding on the Billies lineup were Kenneth Dismuke and his brilliant fullback play, Foy Dickinson with more brilliant fullback play. Bill Lambert at end, and Jerry Hamrick at center. All Billies were in there fighting and holding up the Baker spirit. The underdog Hill Billies unleached a surprise attack down in Houston to surge ahead 12 to nothing in the first quarter against the University of Houston. The brilliant running and driving of Foy Dickinson and Corky Watkins racked up the two touch- downs. All the Billie linemen played outstanding ball before succumbing to a 35 to 12 drubbing. The Billies can be com- mended for their outstanding spirit and play. Ross Wilson made several beautiful passes during the game and Jerry Hamrick and Roger MacMenamy displayed beautiful defense work. Playing one of the longest drawn out football games ever unreeled at Lion Stadium, The Trinity University Tigers of San Antonio unleashed a devastating and rough ground attack to completely overwhelm the Hill Billies by a score of 64 to 7. The hard-fighting Hill Billies never gave up as was proved in the last quarter when little Baker Conger, Billie quarterback let go of a beautiful 47 yard pass to John Applewhite who trudged across the line with four men on his back. It was in this game that the Billies lost their very valuable player, Foy Dickinson. Foy received a bad knee injury in the first period which kept him from the lineup for the rest of the season. • V Again the Hill Billies went down fighting a superior team by getting trimmed by the Southwestern Pirates 25 to 0. The Billies again had that never say die spirit with them. Bill Lambert was put in the Billie backfield in this game and turned in a nice game. Lloyd Wiseman's brilliant line play helped the Billies tremen- dously. Jimmy Wilder, in his first game of the season, smeared one of the Pirates for a twelve yard loss on the first play. Coming out ahead in everything but the score Daniel Baker dropped a hard fought decision to Brooke Army Medical Center. The final score was 12 to 7. DBC rolled up 11 first downs against  e ArmJs ant picked up 159 yards rushing against the Arrays 27 Bakers score came on a pass from Conger to Lambert, after Burnham recovered a Brooke fumble and returned it 20 yards to the Comets' fifteen. Lambert kicked the extra point after taking Conger's pass for the touchdown and the scoring was over for the night, with the Billies trailing 12 to 7. In the backfield, Burnham and Todd played a brilliant defensive game, while on the line Chester Tobey turned in a fine performance and recovered two of the Comets' four fumbles. The final game of the season showed the Billies in their old form as they ran rampant over the East Texas Baptist by a score of 22 to 0. Five hundred shivering fans saw the last game of ' i for the Billies. Ross Wilson passed two beautiful ' ' touchdowns. Lack of experience was one of the chief reasons for the Billies poor showing during the season. Of the twelve men on the squad .none had ever played in collegiate competition. Toward the end of the season the team hit its stride and the scoring was high.
