Football COACH BILL STEVENS The Daniel Baker Hillbillies opened their 1941 season under somewhat of a handicap. The squad was composed almost com- pletely of freshmen, who very capably filled the vacancies left by last year lettermen who did not return to Daniel Baker. The season opener resulted in a 45-0 loss to the Rams of San Angelo Junior College. The Billies HOWARD GADDY I READEY CASKEY played a hard-fought game, but were defeated by the more experienced and heavier Rams. The darkest spot of the game was the injury of the co- captain, Lyle Chambers. The only bright spot of the game for the Billies was the aerial attack which ac- counted for most of Baker’s yards gained. The second game of the season took the Billies to Sherman where they tangled with the Austin College Kangaroos. The Kangaroos were held scoreless the first half but ran wild in the third period to score four touchdowns and added another in the fourth quarter to rout the Billies 34-0. Egbert Pate was unable to play because of a partially disabled shoulder. Readey Caskey starred in BROWNING game by his excellent defensive work. Dale Bagley was responsible for the majority of the yards gained through the Kangaroo line. The Tigers of Trinity University of Waxahachie overwhelmed the Billies in the next game. The Tigers returned home with a 13-0 victory. The fourth defeat for the Billies came at the hands of the A. C. C. Wildcats by a 51-0 score. This game with the Wildcats proved to be an- other battle for control of the air. Playing McMurry on a rain soaked field, the Billies were again defeated, 39-0. Mike Akey kicked the pigskin out of the hole time after time and the Billies hung on to DENNIS it as if it were glued to their fingers. While McMurry fumbled twice the Baker boys did not drop the leather a single time. Playing on their home field, the Hill Billies were defeated by the in- vading Texas Wesleyan Rams, 61-0. Holding the visitors to one touch- down in the first quarter, Daniel Baker weakened in the second period to permit the Rams to chalk up a 35-0 lead at the half. The Billies again held the Rams to one touch- down in the third quarter, but weak- ened in the final period, letting 19 points be added to the final score. Swede Reeves was an outstanding player with his passing and running. With the playing of the final game of the year which climaxed Homecoming activities, came the cli- MELVIN STORM max also of the football season. At the very beginning of this game, John Barton, senior player went over the line for a touchdown, and Baker students went wild with enthusiasm. Rejoicing was short-lived, however, because the Pirates went home with 45 points to our 6. Led by John Barton’s inspired passing and running, which was back up by the tactics, both offensive and defensive of Egbert Pate, the rest of the team could not help giving out a better brand of ball than they have dis- played thus far this season. This game with Southwestern closed the football season for the Billies. Those senior lettermen who played their last game for Daniel Baker are Captain Egbert Pate, Howard Gaddy, and John Barton. Basketball SQUAD Richard Lewai.len Herbert Row Maynard White Hai. Dennis COACH STEVENS MO UTLEY “FLAXIE LEWALLEN When Daniel Baker opened in September the Billie Basketeers began constant training to build themselves up to physical fitness. Regular practice sessions under Coach Stevens’ capable direction be- gan to polish the Billies and get them ready for their coming season. “ROSIE WARD TONNIE SMITHERS To provide experience and action, needed most by the young Billies, who had only three lettermen sparking this year’s roster, Coach Stevens was busy arranging plays and games for the Billies. Three lettermen who returned were “Mo” Utley, from Missouri, “Flaxie” Lewallen from Indiana and Tonnie Smithers from Weatherford. Other squad- men who returned are Dwight Black, E. J. Ray and Pat Akey. The newcomers, who highly justified themselves are Ray Ward, Hal Dennis, Mike Akey,- Maynard White, and Glenn Smith. The team was glad to welcome back Herbert Row who returned at mid-term. The Basketeers played with great team work and showed their skill and action. The season began with an impressive start by taking many of the first GLENN SMITH MAYNARD WHITE HAL DENNIS games. The season was one of ups and downs but the players seemed to be able to match the playing of any of their opponents. The Baker cage team is losing none of its players and we plan to have a team of experienced players back for next year to win the conference for Daniel Baker.
