This game opened in rather a sluggish manner, and the Arlington squad scored a safety in the first quarter. But during the second quarter the Billies opened up with a brilliant running attack, to score two touchdowns and add one ex- tra point. J. M. Payne and Alvin Stanford scored the markers for the Billies. In the second game of the season, Coach Gene Taylor’s Hill Billies invaded Lubbock for the year to hold Tech to a 27-6 win. The score at the end of the half was 7-6, and only through the use of his reserve strength was Pete Cawthon able to score his three touchdowns in the last half. Returning to Brownwood October 4, the Billies lost to John Tarleton’s big team by 3-0, in one of the year’s big upsets. The team was unable to get its offense polished and clicking, and a field goal late in the last quarter won the game for the boys from Stephenville. This was the last non-conference game before the opening of loop hostilities against Austin College. Injuries to Skipper Howard and Red Conger, ace backfield men, played an important part in causing the Billies to drop the Austin College game, played in Sherman, October 11. The score, 13-6, indicates a close fight, and the team agrees that this was one of the toughest battles of the year. This game set Austin College well on its way to the 1935 Texas Conference championship. No team in the conference proved strong enough to stop them effectively. Wednesday, October 16, saw the Billies in Fort Worth for a game with the T. W. C. Rams, an undefeaetd and highly rated team which was doped to clip the Billies. But again Coach Taylor’s men rose up in the face of odds and played the pigskin fast and furious throughout the game to hold the Rams to a 7-7 tie. Although outplayed from a statistical viewpoint, the Billies’ defense was strong enough to h old the Wesleyans, to gain the tie. Recovery of a partially blocked pass in the third quar- ter resulted in the only Daniel Baker score. John Little converted for the extra point. The same toe that Little used to convert the extra point against T. W. C. won the the final non- conference game of the year against Joe Bailey Cheaney’s San Marcos Bobcats, October 25. The game was played in a sea of mud, and neither team could open up with its offense. A field goal late in the final quarter gave Daniel Baker a 3-0 victory over the Southwest Teachers. The Billies’ defensive strength performed brilliantly throughout this game to stop the hard-hitting and fast Bobcat backs. 0 J2 S Fred Salling 2VL Shorty Wagnon IVL Tomie Webb Guard 2VL Hubert Davenport End IVL In the most thrilling game of the year, the Hill Billies took their first conference game played in Brownwood, from the Trinity Tigers by a score of 10-7, November 2, before a large Home-coming crowd. The Billies kept the crowd on its feet throughout most of the game with a sparkling passing drive deep into enemy territory ended in the final D. B. C. marker. With Roach out at center, and an unusually serious letdown from the Trinity game, the Billies were unable to do anything with McMurry’s strong squad November 9, in a ragged game played in Abilene. The score of this tussle stood at 8-0 as the game ended. The Billies staged three promising offensive drives deep into Indian territory throughout the game, but could make none of them pay off with a touchdown. The game was marked with the outstanding performances of Beans Morris, Ar- veal Adams, and Fred Salling. Although the team could not click, these men played bang-up football. The Billies evidently enjoyed the cold, clear night of November 15, as they turned in one of the smoothest games of the year that night, to win from A. C. C. by 7-6. The small crowd of students and fans almost froze to death, but were made to forget their discomfort by the brilliance of the Baker Southwestern’s Pirates all but won from the Billies in their game here November 30. Two field goals and constant threats gave the Pirates a 6-0 lead which they maintained until the closing minutes of play, when the Billies threw care to the winds and opened up with one of the most sensational pass- ing and running attacks of the year. The Daniel Baker squad was able to push over a touchdown and knot the count at 6-6 a few minutes before the gun ended the game. The last game of the season was the most listless and dreary of the entire year, with the possible exception of the McMurry game. In this game, St. F.dwards defeated the Billies 7-0. The game was played in Brownwood, before a large Thanksgiving Day crowd. Travis Roach and Beans Morris play- ed good defensive hall in this game. In the backfield, Little and Chrane proved the most effective ball With the close of the 1935 season, the students turned to the 1936 year, and the entire school looks forward with a great deal of pleasure to what promises to be one of the most successful football seasons in the history of the Daniel Baker Hill Billies.
