Class HlSfOTy ln the hlstory of these Umted States of America there are many outstanding dates that we treasure ID our memorles October l7th I497 uly 4th I776 November l Irh l9l8 but greatest of all as you shall see when future hlstor les are compiled rs the 27th of an uary l924 On that cheerfully sunny day a group of brightly shlnlng Fresh men gathered at the entrance of the old Danbury Hugh School and awaited the fateful bell that would summon them wlthm the portals where they were to set out on the notable careers that have already begun to startle the world No reporters were present to wrtness and describe the entrance to D H S of this charming brrgade of well starch ed well combed youngsters The class lad no press agents rn those days greatness rn newspaper clrcles but hrs dreams brought the class no publncltv then lt was a leap year day and nt was a real leap year class Once lh four years the gxrls come mto their own and nn the 1928A Class femrnmlty prevall ed by more than two to one How the hearts of the young Beau Brummels must have fluttered as they saw the multitude of coy llttle misses advancrn when the doors were finally thrown openl Feelmg always that It was predes txned to great achrevements tl'e class nevertheless made no Immediate at tempt to assert lts superlorlty Settling calmly mto the school routme It began to accumulate great stores of A s and Bs and prepare for the storms and fammes that all rntelllgent Freshmen know awalt them m the mountainous desert of Senior year They used their trme profitably and whatever they clld they dnd well The boys developed a good baseball team and made good Freshmen records at the track meet and ln basketball The girls busxed themselw es with orgamzlng their super lor numbers and with developing poll tical strength for future class meetm They settled not unwrllxn ly but not too deeply mto the usual obscurity of new classes endured the taunts of other somewhat older and far mfenor classes and blded their time Only one thang puzzled them How In the world could they enter m the 1928A Class and be Freshmen B33 What3 Wh1ch3 When5 and Why-' They were bewildered by the puzzle and sought enllghtenment Even the faculty hesitated ln nts replies The half year promotlons were still ln thexr mfancy at that tlme No one was pos rtrve rn thelr answer Only Nlr Betts failed to hesitate He was fast asleep on the stalrs and never sand a word paper paper paper' uestxon paper exam papers scratch paperl Report cards' Holldaysl Freshmen A s now and a temporary ending of the puzzle A few members lagged behmd but for the most part the class marched steadlly on serenelv flattemng the obstacles of Fresh mamsm Nor did the responslbllltles of Soph omore year frighten them They or ganlzed now as a umt and welded themselves mto a forceful whole The glrls knew their power but at the first electron of ofhcers they bowed humbly before school traditions and balloted for a boy as presrdent glvmg the honor to Vltot Vosllus lt has been sand that Vrtot s handsome features won thr- hearts of the farr ballot casters and weakened their determination to have a IOOW female executrve staff Dame Rumor reported also that Vosrlus wa unduly mfluencecl by a certam group of femrmsts but be that as rt may he ulded the class safely through the sec page mn . . CLhr Qlnq ond year ably assisted by Vice Presl dent Laura Webb Treasurer Wxlllam Foley and Secretary Ruth Morgan A few members falled to stand the pace which the class set ard dropped be hind but for the most part l928A moved smoothly forward succe dmv rn whatever It undertook The girls chose their own design for the class rmgs and voted unanimously for the class colors of crlmson and gray but the boys approved their de crsrons and peace and concord relgned at all txmes Teachers left and new ones came Newer and higher standards did not check l928A as It continued to garner nts hwh marks Mr Moyle joined the facu ty the fall of 1925 W D lVloyle as the class soon learned Somehow hrs lnltlals caused a vague uneasmess W was soon dls overed to stand for Wlllnam The D remamed a mystery Even rf someone had sug gested that It mlght be Dalton the fear of It would stall hav been but a shadowy hazy one ln those Innocent umor year found the class number a scant fifty but none the less worthy and able to prove lts worth for all that An outstandmg class that was making good its Freshman promises class that was begmnmg to show that anuary 27 l924 would have It place ln hlstory Early rn this year the long develop nn threat of femmlne dominance wa carried out Traditions were forgotten precedents were set aside Vosxlus was ousted from the president s cha r and his place nven to Laura Webb ust one example of the Oflglhallty of I9 SA The school buzzed wxth com ment favorable and unfavorable Boys of other classes tendered sympathy to those of 1978A hopmg perhaps to break the powerful coordination of the class but they found that sympathy was out of place Laura proved a strong leader and 78A contxnued to page ten add to lts already long lust of notabl achievements The boys earned places on varsrty teams and produced strong class teams The -lunlor social was a huge success both boys and glrls took actlve parts nn all school socletles especially rn dramatncs where Frances Hatch and Lewis Tappan made a last mg fame for themselves by therr unter pretatlons of parts rn The Torch bearers Who could forget Tappan as Mr Twlller of the half moustache3 l928A had many representatives nn the journalism class orgamzed that year and had much to do wrth lts success The class baseball mne defeated the boasting senlors ust once was l928A overwhelmed by superior numbers lts half hun cured members could not vain a victory m the ticket selling contest that year Wnth that exception 1978A as unxors yrelded first honors to none Mass Webb served her term of office and every fresh laural gathered by the clas helped to vlndlcate lts choice of leader Miss Webb was splendldly assrsted IH President wrth Miss Ruth Morgan and Wllllam Foley acting as Secretary and Treasurer a second time The class gave nts umor Prom rn anuary I977 and felt that It was most httmg that this dance should be the hnal chapter of the soclal actlvltles of the old high school That the Prom was a brnlllant affaxr goes wxthout saying February I977 Semor Bs now New bulldlng New furniture New schedule New rules Long periods Semor dxgnlty Phllomusa No cafe terla No sidewalks on the boys side Mud Lockers seven feet hl h Red cards That unknown D ln lVlr Moyle s name Senior Fngllsh and that cul mlnatlng horror the Dalton Plan No class save I978A could have so calmly surmounted each difficulty lNo class save l978A could have made so many uncomolrmentary remarks about the Dalton Plan lts orlgxnator xts an -. -N 5 c Q v . . - -1 . . e I , ' I 1 I - ' . , . , . . 1 u ' . e 5 . . y ' - ' - . . . .5 l . . - .I . l nn : . . . - . . . 0 ' . . 3 ' .
