The eventful year had both ups and downs, victories and defeats, tragedies and triumphs. Some of the major news stories outside of the country were the Christian Phalangists entering the Shatilo Sabra camps in Beirut to massacre Palestinian refugees, and the outlawing of Solidarity in Poland which spurred the Reagan administrotion's boycott of the Soviet natural gas pipeline in retaliation for the Soviet crackdown in Poland. Another down was Mexico's orchestration of a forty percent devaluation of its currency in an attempt to boost its faltering economy. Russia had a new Premier sworn into office: Yuri Andropov, former leader of the KGB. There were also many national events which stirred the country. Trading on the stock exchange reached a postfWorld War ll high of 10.42, while inflation started a gradual decline and unemployment rose. The recessionary economy hit the airline industry hard, resulting in the bankruptcy of Braniff Airlines. Meanwhile, the largest demonstration in US. history occurred in New York City. 550,000 people gathered in support of nuclear disarmament. Furthermore, after a ten-year bottle, the Equal Rights Amendment failed to become the twenty-seventh amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Other events raised questions and curiosity in the country this year. The country was panicked for over two months when cyanide was found in Tylenol tablets in Illinois. Tragedies were prevalent throughout the year. Perhaps the greatest ones were the deaths of Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco, Marty Feldman, Tennessee Williams, John Cheever, John Belushi, and Leonid Brezhnev. On the brighter side of the year were the birth of Britain's Prince William, the first child of Crown Prince Charles and Princess Diana, and the successful fifth mission of the space shuttle Columbia which carried its first commercial cargo. In sports the National Football League strike lasted nearly eight weeks before negotiations pulled through. The Washington Redskins won the Superbowl and the St. Louis Cardinals won the World Series. In tennis, Jimmy Connors won Wimbleton and Worn Borg retired. A major break-through in the medical field was the implantation of the first artificial heart in Dr. Barney Clark The Board of Trustees of the Capistrano Unified School District Cfrontg Annette Gude, George White, Jon Overton, back: A.
