Our last class project was the lively Sopho- more Party. Voluntary -Iunior chapel and the Junior choir were uniting factors. Suspense, whispers, ring orders, and finally February 4th gave a new mean- ing to Pinocchio. Be- ing lost among shelves of books was no problem to the Library Committee who found and quieted all! The Hospitality Committee welcomed new girls and satisfied coffee drinkers. This year's lirst un- dertaking was an assembly describ- ing the Mystery Cycles in prepara- tion for the Pine Manor Christmas production. In the spring, under the direction of Mrs. Stutz and student committee heads, Pwr' Gym' was presented. Even Broadway hits were moved to Boston for the club. The club had a speaker on Asia and saw a filmstrip on Mid-Eastern problems. A successful year ended with Tfu' Mmry W'iifuu' and the realilation that the only way to say it is with n song. usic On Tuesday afternoons, melo- dies ranging from Brubeck to Beethoven drifted from Bardwell where the Music Club assembled. When flute, voice or piano students performed, the Club gave out printed programs. The varied music and the different interpretations gave enjoyment to the listeners and confidence to the performers. They made their debut at the Senior-Sopho- more Banquet and harmonized through reunion, the Bazaar, dances and Mothers, and Fathers' Days. The Dana Hall Orchestra, enriched by the presence of two flute quart- ets, played impressively this year. lts Christmas Concert sent us off in jolly spirits. The other concerts were the joint one with Andover, the spring entertainment, and the Ifestival for several nearby schools. Throughout the year the Orchestra certainly hit many a cheery note. 40' f POHl.SA The members of the Spanish Club, speaking Spanish always and re- freshing with cokes and cookies, learned about the customs, d.inces, and music of Spanish-speaking countries. Spanish students spoke on Puerto Rico and Christmas in Argentina. Its trips included Boston galleries and the Gardner Museum. It sponsored movies, a talk by Columbia University's Mr. Man- gravitc, and the room judging. The Club ruffled copies of famous paint- ings to members and, when spring came, mastered the art of picnick- ing, thus ending the year. VCVICA C'est si bonlu say the French Club members, who at meetings speak English only on the sly. Board invaluable to the sports enthusiasts. And there was always the excuse box to challenge the creative minds of non-sports enthusiasts. Sticks down! was the slogan of the big fall sport, hockey. Although wrists ached, breath came in gasps, sides hurt, and bruises appeared, more than 165 girls participated. Heavy sweaters and blue bows recall varsity games and the aftermath of hot cocoa and cookies. Straight as an arrow. To the relief of the hockey players, the archers on the adjoining field consistently hit the target. Archery was a student-run sport and appealed to enthusiastic beginners, dead-eye dicks, and lovers of a convenient gym outfit. Are you ready, gang? Let's go! -and with a resounding yell the cheerleaders leaped into the dining room for a little pep rally over soup and sandwiches. These irrepressible girls organized pep rallies with lollipops, initiated cheers, and en- couraged attendance at competitive games. Page twenty Mrs. Hogdon, Miss Gery, Miss Bowlby. Everyone knew who rode. It was unmistakable. The gymkhana with musical chairs and the spring horse show proved the skill and determination of the riding classes as they performed on occasion- ally co-operative steeds. The gym, with the bump in the middle of the floor , housed 6824 of Dana during the winter basketball classes. The large advanced class espec- ially remembers stilts against Milton, instruction Touche! Stop to consider. in the math room, 9:00 P. M. practices, and cries of Rebounds! , Fifty points , and Chocolate or peppermint? The class games and the amusing and exciting house competition, a farewell to the B. B. season, were highpoints of the year. The basketball teams were well acquainted with the lively fencers. During refreshments after a game the fencers moved to one side of the snack bar but often managed to spear a cone on the retreat. This agility proved itself during the an- nual tournament at Brandeis University and dur- ing other inter-school competition. Body Mechanics taught co-ordination, good pos- ture, poise, and such skills as how to sit without .19- Classy awaits the winner. A horse laugh. Bonnie voices an opinion. leading with the rear. Although temporarily suf- fering from muscular pains and strains, the body mechanics student gradually acquired correct car- riage and a good figure. If you were chubby, brittle, or awkward, Mod- ern Dance was ideal for improvement. For those who developed limber limbs and interpretive intelligence, the Workshop provided advanced study in expression and rhythm. During the warm spring months tennis was the rage. From early morning to dusk, dozers on the sun deck listened to the ping-ping of tennis balls on the asphalt courts. Occasionally there were pauses to retrieve home runs from the nearby A rip-roaring set. old Chapin QP, Sun worshippers. brook. This tennis enthusiasm culminated in the exciting singles and doubles tournaments during the final days of school. It is thrilling to race down a lacrosse field for 20 yards cradling the ball. Yet it is discouraging to discover the hall has been inadvertently re- leased 19 yards back. However. the Dana varsities and their opponents were enthusiastic, fun-loving, and peculiarly determined. . . for the hips.
