For the first few days we could not even distinguish Bardwell Auditorium from Study Hall. However, our old girls patiently guided us all around Dana and soon had us straightened out. Before we knew it, the to-us-great event of the year, the Sophomore-Senior dinner had arrived, and we were all waiting anxiously for the Seniors to come to our houses and take us to the Main Dining Room. In November at our first step singing we presented Miss Helen Russell as our class sponsor, Sue Weisser as President, and Bonnie Rice as Secretary-Treasurer. For our Sophomore party we gave a carnival. Working for it made us feel that at last we had lound our place at Dana. With the Christmas season came Revels. The beautiful costumes, the pageant and play, and the singing really expressed the Christmas spirit. Spring brought Spread. To the Juniors this event meant receiving their rings, to us it meant tidying up for the Seniors during the week-end of Spread and knowing that next year we would be getting our rings. As commencement rolled around, we said a reluctant good-bye to the Seniors, for they had helped us through the year to become adjusted and to End the oppor- tunities awaiting us. There is now only one House President for the Main Building, who has under her direction the House Representatives of each ol' the corridors. In addition to its representation on the all- school council the non-resident students have elected a subsidiary council of their own number which functions directly in matters pertaining particularly to non-resi- dents. At our suggestion the school has experimented with inlormal breakfasts which means that we may eat breakfast as soon as the bell rings without waiting for the en- tire tablc to assemble, thus saving much needed time. Our special activity has been to establish a new system whereby the student body may become more independent. thus strengthening the qualities of responsibility, cooperation, and school spirit. This new merit system divides the girls into tour different groups according to their aca- demic and citizenship ratings, and conlers privileges and responsibilities earned by personal achievement. VYe have tried to live up to the standard that a good citizen is one who lives harmoniously in his community, helps solve its problems, and actively shapes its growth. We believe these innovations have and will continue to benefit the girls and the school as a whole, which is our ultimate aim. T5-il l 1 flllll From the beginning ol' school the mem- bers ol' the Focus board could be recog- nized by the deep liirrows wedged in their brows, their baggy eyes, and their probing questions as to who you are, what you do, and what you want to be if and when you grow up. But despite the lrenzied hours spent in Compiling and arranging material we all did have a XN'OI'1Clf'1'll1l time with this our brain Child. Nliss Grimes, as ever, was our guiding star, without whom we would have lallen into the depths of depression and lost our way many times. The hockey season was quite long since the weather remained tavorable up until December, and although the varsity was not un- defeated, more outside games were played than ever before and many new contacts were estab- lished. In February a hockey ban- quet, at which awards were made, was given to the varsities by Miss Bowlby, and it was an experience which those girls will long treas- ure. Basketball was by lar the most popular winter sport, and although the classes were large, everyone had an equal chance to practice and play. The Varsity played several outside games, and the season was I55l ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION President Audrey Shippee Vice President Alex Ordway Seerelagz Lee Garrison T7'BH,l'uT67' Sheila Sweeney very successlul. In addition to varsity and class games, round robins between houses were held on Friday nights, and voluntary practice on Saturday afternoons. Badminton was also very popular this winter, and both singles and dou- bles tournaments were featured and adepts played outside schools. The ski weekend, which was spent this year at Russells in North Conway, New Hampshire, was a great success and almost without mishap. Although the weather was only lair, the spirit and the skiing were excellent. Cheer Leaders were a great MissBow1by addition to the games this year, and played a large part in making this year a success. As its name implies, it is a philanthropic association, bent on doing what good it can, where and when it can. The Executive Board consists of a president, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary, all elected by the entire student body. These in turn appoint the various class and day student representatives. The officials of communities, such as Boys' Town, and of organizations, such as The Home for Little Wanderers, are constantly writing to either Mrs. Johnston or Mrs. Preble to thank the Dana Hall girls for their kind and much needed help, a destitute family expresses gratitude for a turkey dinner at Thanksgiving time, the men and women running the Greater Boston War Fund and the Red Cross drives, voice their appreciation for substantial contributions, crippled and helpless children from the Peabody Home and the Massachusetts Convalescent Home, write their thanks for such simple things as Christmas caroling,-all these people recognize the philanthropic work we do. In the autumn the League sponsors an informal dance in the Oak Room. At Christmastime it provides a candlelight service, one of the most beautiful and cher- ished memories of a Dana Hall girl. In the spring a May Queen and her Court are crowned, with the League sponsoring the festivities. We spent many enjoyable Tuesday afternoons listening to records and some- times to guest performers. The high spots of this year were the movies that we gave. In it and subsequent issues we recorded such events as dances, ski- weekend, parties, and Spread and made editorial comment. The purpose of this newspaper is to inform students of happenings in school, and more important still to report events and set forth the problems at Dana Hall with accuracy and integrity. We have established this paper, but it depends on succeeding classes to make it a tradition. The Group started a col- lection of prints of famous paintings by such artists as Renoir, Picasso, and Gaugin and circulated them fbr enjoyment in our own rooms. We aimed to accumulate enough for a school lending library and to present a large framed one to the school each year. I have actually managed to see, or to hear about all of my classmates back at Dana Hall! It all began when Sibby Woolworth asked me to a house party down on her Texas ranch. It seems that she married a million- aire cowboy and is living next door to Molba Clark, the famous health specialist and athletic instructor. Molly and I planned to fly down together in one of her planes and to pick people up at various points en route. The first to get on was Gale Holman, who runs the most exclusive date bureau in New York and supplies the men for Cafe Society. She had just run into Ginny Garland, and Muriel Seidner, co-winners of the Sherman-Williams Opera contest. From them Gale found out that joan Davis just had another song on the Hit Parade, and also that Margery Brush and Alice Bentley run an exclusive school to turn out impeccable street-cleaners. The next per- son we picked up was Salbf Hackett, whose column 'LAdvice to the Pleasingly Plump is now in the Wellesley Townsmanf' Sally brought with her a letter from the Reverend Brownie Morrison, lady minister of the blue-grasslands. Brownieis letter read that Gatgw Raub is having a marvelous time as a missionary in Siberia, although her mission is only for women. Brownie also mentioned that Gin Biggeri is teaching kindergarten back at Dana. Dottie Alton and Nanqi Sheldrake then boarded the plane in highest spirits. They are both married, and Dottie had a set of red-haired triplets about a year ago. Isnlt that a coincidence? Shelly had recently spent the weekend with gorgeous Lynn Boylan, Powers, pet model. From Shelly also came the news that janet Ballou is still fllibustering in the Senate. Sue Farnham then got on. Not only is she 5 U. S. tennis champion but also the mother of two bouncing boys. Sue was all enthusi- asm about the fact that Mildie Weber is mayor of New York City, and is beloved by all as ULittle Flower The Secondf' I suddenly remembered that Barbara Brun- son is Under-Secretary of the Navyg and that Her Honor, Ning: Butler was to be deciding a case concerning shipbuilding in the Supreme Court. I had read that in jeanne de la Vergneb' editorial in '4The Daily Workerw which has amalgamated with P.M. It seems, too, that Sheryl Wakelee is understudying Jane Withers out in Holly- wood. After a hilarious plane trip, we arrived in glorious Texas, with the sun beating down upon our heads. We were very much relieved to arrive at the ranch, where Ginny Kingsbury came out to meet us. Ginny is, you know, the only woman mem- ber of the Whiffenpoofs and was visiting Sib. She said that Anne Cobgi and jeanne Godolpbin are plugging along, thanks to ,lf L I6 ' Tk -2. And Malloy Cross, of all persons, is in the heart of South America with her husband collecting rare and unusual specimens ofthe frog. Sibby, who makes a lovely cowgirl, brought us out much need- ed refreshments. Dawson's ale! That meant Pat Mooney was in the house. They say she's a whiz at the beer business, and still leads the fashions. A shrill whistle from behind caused me to shudder, but not for long. After a marvelous reunion at Sibby's I ran out of laundry, and decided to turn my footsteps westward. I had a curious urge to Hnd out what had happened to the rest of my confreres. On the train, I picked up a magazine and glanced casually through it until a Pepsodent ad caught my eye. There on the page before me was Marie Van Hire, just recently elected Pepsodent Queen of 1955! I knew her friendly smile would get her places. I happened to look up from the magazine, and there stood Margaret Mac- Dougall, in an engineer's outfit, leaning on a pick and shovel. Mag came over and told me that jean Matlern is teaching chemical engineering at Pitt College for Women and also that Maw Baker is Mag: Sack favorite model. When I got off the train at Los Angeles, I ran bang into Sharon Lulga and .Nayda Valldquly, both pilots, on their way to Guatemala. I chatted with them for a while and learned that Roberta Matthier is a woman doctor in Alaska, while B. j. Anderson runs horse farms all over the country fshe has one in almost every statej with Margaret Traylor and Lic Morrill as her riding instructors. I thought it interest- ing that Rose Sun is back at Dana teaching Chinese, and is nicknamed Mlle. Moon- beam-her husband teaches at M.I.T. From Los Angeles I went on to Beverly Hills to see Nat .Nowell and jean Sanderson. Nat has no career, but is just plain happily married QI can imagine nothing betterj. jean saves many attractive men from drowning in the Pacific! Sandy Mills was staying with Jean. Sandy and Pal Spring have finally proved, after many arduous hours of lab. work, that fleas do get tuber- culosis after all. Mary King is following in her father's footsteps by becoming a fore- most brain surgeon. My next stop was the California House of Representatives, where I visited Shirley Rubel, who is the leader of the Farmers' Rights Group. Until then, I didnyt realize that George McCormick, Bezgy Brown, and Maribz Krurn own a weasel farm, where they raise weasels for their skins. Their motto is Hjeazel, Peazel, buy a Weasel! A must,' on my trip list was the M.G.M. Studios. I had to see my ex-roommate, Brenda Bowman. She was busy in her latest role as Tarzan's wife and swooped down to my feet on a vine, yelping out, Hello.', I had difficulty understanding her jungle talk at first, but managed to make out that jean Hurlbut poses her luscious red hair for M.G.M.,s lion's mane. just then Chiane Gerow came into the lot, peddling Oregon apples. I asked her what had become of Bobby Doane, and re- ceived the reply that the latter designs clothes for Hattie Carnegie-and models them herself-no wonder they sell! Belly Mao.Neil still can't drag herself far away from Pinkham Notch, while Bibs Finckelr love of adventure led her to dive from Golden Gate Bridge. I foresaw this last at school when Bibs was constantly diving from radiators, and diving after hockey balls. I left California regretfully, and aimed for St. Paul. But Alex Ordway had lor- gotten to meet me, as jane Lachmund had arrived a few days before and was being shown the sights, so I made my way as best as I could to her house alone. Because of her unusual linguistic ability, Alex has been made head of the language depart- ment at Dana, and is also adviser to the Sophomore Class. Our Janie, now known as Bubbles Lachmund, has set the pace for thousands by posing in McEwen Bubble- bath. While waiting for Alex at her home, I turned on the radio, and was amused to hear Marg: Pearl Alexanderlv voice shriek out, Hi-O, Silverf, Finally Alex arrived, behind time as usual. After dinner we went to St. Paul's local emporium. Imagine my surprise when I saw Phyllir Baehman and Tragv Rowe, those two side-splitting comedians, billed with Barbara Flanagan, known to millions as Soapbox Susie, in the new musical comedy, Taxicab Serenadef, by Connie Chaplin. After the show, we trouped backstage to interview our former classmates. Tracy told us that Marjorie Malhewson and Audrgz Thompson have been hoodwinking the public with fascinating seancesg and Phyllis informed us that joan Orr is busily raising daughters, that one of them may become Dana,s first great-great-grand- daughter! A couple of days later Alex drove me to the station. Who should be announcing my train as it pulled into the station but Anne Borntrager,'she of the powerful voice! I waved hello, and had just time to ind out that jacquie Hart is now the Dutch Consul over here, before I made a leap for the departing train. On the train I started to read Beay Denkerfs and joan Blumenlhallv best-seller Life on a Bingen. This book kept me amused until my train pulled into Decatur. Ann CurU1 and Ann Shellabarger had gotten my wire and dropped everything to come to meet me. Needless to say, we made up for not having seen each other by talking incessantly. Curry was rather preoccupied because she was trying to think of her next move for the chess game which she and Audrey Shippee had been carrying on by mail ever since they had left Dana. I meant to tell you that Audrey Shippee is head of the Government Department of Socialized Athletics, so she must be ter- ribly important down in Washington. Shell is home on her first holiday since 1-gd l l peace was declared. After we graduated, she married a bum, and then went abroad and opened hamburger stands all over Europe. But in spite of this record, Shell was surprised to hear that Gracie Fletcher was in Australia observing the habits of the ostrich and collecting their plumes for the Alpena Department of Commerce. While I was in Illinois, I re- ceived a letter from Salb Tallman, who is selling 'flarge succulent oranges at, you guessed it, Fort Meyers, Florida. Sally said that Nangl English is the new head of the Wellesley Inn, and every Saturday and Sunday she holds open house for the Dana girls. Sal went on to tell me that Mary Mitchell is an ace reporter, it seems that every time Mary's on the scent, she shrieks out Gangway, Scoopl' or else Stop that thieflw As the summer was fast drawing to a close, I turned my footsteps in the direc- tion of Pittsburgh. I had sometime ago received an invitation to jangz Andersonis yearly wedding. Enroute, I noticed in NThe Times' that Dort Bintg has estab- lished a woman's college in Saganaw, Michigan. That's the one Dale Doran is Dean ofg also that is where Nangz Smith teaches Modern European History. Alice Batchelder is in charge of the dormitories, a position for which she prepared by hav- ing been head of the Main Building. I understand that Dort is giving Dana Hall applicants consideration before all others. Why wasn't there some good old soul like that back in ,45? There was a column in the Times stating that Dottie Evans and Diane Palmer are interning at Mass. Gen- eral Hospital. I arrived in Pittsburgh, very much ex- cited about Janey's wedding, I was not to be disappointed. Janey looked lovelier than at anyone of her previous nine wed- dings. Ann St. Clair made a darling matron- of-honourg she and her husband design planes, you know. At the reception I saw Barbara Bogart, who has been managing 78 Armandofs Restaurant, known for its rich food. With Bogartus was her lovely sister- in-law, Maile Scott. These two regaled me with the news of Edith Sillcoxk' being presi- dent of the Watertown Chamber of Com- merce, and sending out booklets contain- ing the statistics of Watertown. At that moment, a murmur rose from the guests. No wonder! There in the doorway stood Esther Hamilton, ambassador to France, and Sabina Gildemeister, envoy to and chief interpreter at all the peace conferences! They were accompanied by Polhz Lishon, whose cute nickname, Fifi Nightingale, has stuck with Polly ever since she and Virginia Boon went to Europe with Audrgn Stewart to nurse starving and destitute children. My last point of debarkation was New York City. I put up at Vicky Harringtorfs, I mean, the Dr. Harringtonls, noted psy- choanalyst's, who was just dying to work on a guinea pig like me. Vicky had just come back from Connecticut, where she had been visiting Marie Freeman, who simply wonit leave her native state. Marie has recently written the Book-ol-the- X, Y X,,-- 5 u g to G N Q, , V. f ion? E Month-Club selection, HRecipes for the Hair. It is one of the best authorities on its subject. I believe Dorene Srhine and Nangf Taj? use it exclusively in their beauty shop at the Waldorf. They prescribe at the same time jane Sangerht remarkably slimming routine by which one can re- main alive and beautiful on a starvation diet, a perfect way to get thin. I must try it! I had pretty much worn out my tennis racquet this summer, so I thought that while I was in New York, I ought to buy a new one at Golf and Tuttleis, the store one always goes to for athletic equipment ofany kind. The co-owners of this amazing establishment whispered to me, quite confidentially, of course, that Ruthie Howe has just come back from her honeymoon. jill Vandenburg took Ruthie and her hus- band around the world in Jill's smooth new yacht. They loved every minute of the trip, even when they were captured by natives in the heart of Africa. They got away safely, however, because of the inter- vention of the natives' white goddess, Lee Garriion! After leaving Goff and Tuttle's with a divine new racquet, I decided to drop in on Pat Boardman, who is swamped with running a 'iLonely Hearts, Clubf' Pat very generously presented me with a complimentary ticket to janetCraj10's and Nangz Schillinglf operetta, which is abso- lutely all the rage. The operctta is the story of a goddess who falls in love with a mortal. Naturally, many complications arise, but what made me enjoy myself so hugely were Sue Adams as the goddess, and 79 Sue Bartlett as the mortal who was afraid of love. I sat next to Nangy Edgelzill, who was on the verge of returning home to Cali- fornia-how she loves that West! Edgie was overflowing with gossip, so during the intermission we sat and gossiped! Un- fortunately, all of Pat Dunnlv children are cute little sailor boys, so she wonit have anyone to carry on her physics record at Dana. .Marge Wilkens liked school and enjoyed studying so much that she has started all over again, and has recently been promoted to the second grade. jane Felton is at camp this summer. I think this is her twenty-second year, and she may be a counsellor by now. Persis Hgawooa' just never stops winning championships, that girl is some athlete. And last, but not latest, Lallie Lee Lowis is still questioning the Pythagorean Theorem! It was certainly fun to find out about them all! Who would have guessed ten years ago that we would all be what we are now, just about the most versatile class that ever hit the school. Well, back to the 'ts lum!!!!! C Y FRANCES PENROSE jjtjgclfi Fl l il I 1 Q Al CLASS WILL VVe, the Class of 1945, after successfully coping with tests and test tubes, words, figures, friends, teachers, diets and fire- drills, hoping we are of sound mind, do hereby bequeath those things which we held most dear this last year at Dana Hall to those we leave behind: To Mrs. Ripley we leave our everlasting gratitude for her enthusiasm and inval- uable guidance. To the Juniors we leave the joys and calories abundant in the senior room kitchen, the privilege of walking disdain- fully past study hall, and the relief of not having to find chaperones for six o'clocks. To the Sophomores we leave the antici- pation of Spread, the prestige of being old girls and upper classmen, and the love of their sister class. We leave the following individual leg- acies: We leave Audrey Shippeeis school spirit and dependability to posterity in hopes that there will always be some one in Dana Hall to carry them on. We leave Rose Sunis quiet charm to Frances Wells-need we say more. To Ginny Rising we leave Brenda Bow- manis convenient size. Maile Scott has generously agreed to share her Howing locks with Marty Holt. Cemetery leaves eight graves to be filled-and also Frances Penrose's laugh to haunt them. Brownie Morrison has graciously be- queathed her magazines to any future senior who has nothing to do in her study periods. 80 To each liiture senior we leave a set of false finger nails in anticipation of college boards. Alex leaves Dana. We leave Catty Raubis abundance of men to Sally Patrick, who we hope will share the overflow with the rest of the school. Bibs Fincke hands over her one way ticket to Exeter to Petie Hoving-lucky dog. As a class we would like to leave Nat Nowell's lovely poise to the Sophomore class to help them become truly worthy of being Dana Hall girls. We leave Barbara Doane's figure to be envied by all. To Pondie Ordway we leave all of the weight weive gained from September to June. Molly Clark leaves her bubbling hu- mour to be carried on by Nancy Munroe. Ann Shellabarger leaves Helen and Mary. Frances Penrose was going to leave the story of her operation, but couldn't bear to part with it. Last but not least, we leave this Focus to keep alive the memory of our class and our years at Dana. We hereby set our seal to this document on the twenty-seventh day of May, in the year of our Lord one thousand, nine hundred and forty-five. Signed: rIlHE CLASS or 1945 S H A M B A L L A H WELLESLEY - MASSACHUSETTS MY DEAR GIRLS: At this time of year I am always asking myself ifanother so large and promising a group of young people as our graduating class, can ever again be brought together at Dana. Wlell, we must face the fact that your work is satislactorily completed, and that you are now looking forward with eager interest to a new lile and work in the colleges of your choice. In this final hour I am moved to put up a plea for a divided interest on your part, that is, a continuing interest in and loyalty to Dana, while you are learning to know and love your new academic home. You see, we really do not want to lose any one of you and so beg for the letter, or the occasional visit, that will keep you in touch with what we are doing here lor those who will follow you, and will give us the pleasure ofknowing about your achievements in a stimulating and growth- itil environment. The new world toward which you are now moving will be much more your own world than the past one made by older people has ever been. We are trusting you to consecrate your abilities to the creation of this new and diHerent world in which we can all rejoice. We are still in the shadows ofa global sorrow, but shadows pass and the sun ofa new world-righteousness will rise to brighten and bless us all. That each one of you may have a share in bringing the promised new world to birth, is the affec- tionate hope of Your friend, HELEN TEMPLE COOKE june, 1 945. tm FACULTY Allen, Mme.
