R. that bright morn of September, 1954, to greet Mrs. Harris, Miss Hodnett, and Miss Howard. With all the hustle and bustle of getting settled in our classes, we elected officers in our respective homerooms. The commanders-in-chief were Faye Rowland, Larry Barksdale, and Mickel Battermann. About a month later, our dignity was lowered somewhat when initiation arrived. We were given the title of Rats and from the way we scampered about to prevent meeting any seniors, we lived up to the name. That was one day we are sure nothing was accomplished. Some of our freshmen showed promise and determination by joining the basketball and baseball teams. The Wildcats claimed Randy M., Mickel B., and Wayne Y., while the Kittens beckoned to Joan W., and Violet W. Since there were fewer of us in '55-'56, weneeded only two sponsors, Mrs. Sours and Miss Howard. With the leaders elected that year Randy M., president; Joan Walton, vice president; Judy Clark, treasurer; we felt sure our sophomore class would be the most successful yet. The Beta Club claimed some ambitious and brainy members when Anne B., Charlotte C., Sally P., Judy C., Cliff H., Mickel B., FayeR., LanaH., Randy M., Dallas $., Sandy Y., and Dianne G., became members. This class had its leaders with Judy C. as president of the F.H.A. In the brains department Charlotte C. was granted the Beta Merit Award. Ray J. won the Dairy Award in F.F.A. Now we realized that next year would be one of the best in school, so we left for our vacation bursting with anxiety. Our junior class had so much to do that it was almost impossible to know what was coming next. But one thing was certain, we needed class officers. Anne B., president; Cliff H., vice president; Judy C., secretary; and Faye R., treasurer were the very people who could lead that class to victory! Miss Pleasant and Mrs. Gettys helped us so much with the preparation of our play, Off the Track. We never thought our juniors were such promising actors. Another unforgettable event of '56-'57 was the Junior-Senior Banquet. Everyone who attended was in romantic Fairyland for the whole evening of May 2. Joan Walton and Charles Anderson reigned over the banquet as queen and king, and Mickel was master of ceremonies for the big event. The year '57-'58 was the most fabulous of all our high school years. There were 53 seniors. Doyle E. was elected president, Randy M., vice president; Anne B., secretary; Faye R., treasurer; Charlotte C., reporter; Sally P., devotional leader; Faye G. and Wesley B., song leaders. Judy C. and Cliff H. were the two new co-editors of the Archway. Our sponsors, Mrs. Myers and Mrs. Milam, must be given credit for their good advice. Various clubs in our school were led by our seniors: Beta Club, Cliff Hodnett; Monogram Club, Joan Walton; Library Club, Wayne Hall; F.B.L.A., Anne Beggarly; F.H.A. Federation, Judy Clark; Dramatics Club, Doyle Edwards. The S.C.A. was led by Randy Martin with Joan Walton as vice-president, Sally Pleasant as secretary, Wesley Barker as treasurer, Faye Rowland as song leader, and Anne Beggarly as pianist. We were quite proud of our beauty and popularity contest winners also. Sally was Miss Future Teacher, Kitty was runner up for Carnival queen, Tommy was chosen Carnival king, and Judy C., FayeR., and Joan W. were candidates for Homecoming queen. Our basketball team did very well this season with Randy as captain, Wayne as co-captain and such splendid players as Cliff, Mickel, Tommy, and Dallas. The Kittens were led by Joan as captain and Violet as co-captain. The memories of the play, banquet, Sneak Day, Graduation, and the happy days spent at Dan River High School will be remembered and cherished by each member of our senior class forever. BETTY HILL Testator CLASS PROPHECY From the armchair of my writing desk where | had sat down to rest that night after a day of hard work, | heard..the’ distant ‘voices fromthe street, diminished by the thick walls of the room. | saw through the window in front of mea clear sky- full of stars, whose-light softened that of thefull moon. | heard singing on the T. V. from the other room. It weis’a song. that brought me memories of my school days. It had been ten years since the graduation of the class of '58. As | sat there wondered what had happened to my old friends. A rocket was being launched to the moon by LARRY BARKSDALE with GLENDA CHAMBERLAIN, SALLY PLEASANT and myself as passengers. Enroute to the moon, we noticed, out of the rear view mirror, old familiar pals, ANNE BEGGARLY and BOBBY PARKER, balancing the Big Dipper. At dusk the evening star shone brightly on the residence of DIANNE GILBERT, who was teaching the duties of a housewife to LANA HODNETT, FAYE GILBERT, and SANFORD YATES. Since it was so late, we stopped at Mars Hotel, where preprietor, DAVID HADLEY, was playing the latest Rock and Roll records. We were amazed at seeing LOIS SIMMONS and DALLAS SNEAD, Mars Champion Dancers, rehearsing for their space debut. The Bellhops, ROBERT COMER, RONALD THOMPSON, MERVIN PRUITT, and JAMES LEWIS showed us to our recom. While dining at the Dewdrop Inn, BETTY ADAMS, GLORIA DAVIS, and VIRGINIA TERRY served us excellent food cooked by DOYLE EDWARDS. (We noticed Chef on his lapel.) The evening would not have been complete without Mars' greatest comedian STANLEY Sputnik GOSNEY. At break of dawn we were on our way again and a short time later, we reached the moon. Strolling down Fairyland Avenue, we met FAYE ROWLAND whe was on her way to be maid of honor at the double wedding of JUDY and CLIFTON, VIOLET and WESLEY. WALLACE BRYANT, Pastor, performed the double ring ceremonies. Greatly astonished, we noticed WAYNE YATES as ring bearer and KITTY NEAL as flower girl. TOMMY WALKER, who was having a scientific meeting with technicians, JUNE BARKSDALE, GAYNELLE SHELTON and MINNIE HOWERTON, invited us to go with him to Pluto to see BARBARA REYNOLDS and FAYE GIBSON compete for championship in the All-Star Universal Wrestling match. AUBREY DODSON refereed this event. The Planet was ruled successfully by Kings Momo, RANDOLPH MARTIN, and Koko, RAY JONES. On our return trip as we jerked off, we heard HAZEL EVANS singing “By the Light of the Silvery Moon to MICKEL, EARLENE, JOAN and BILLY. We waved goodbye to CHARLOTTE and MAXINE who were sweeping stardust from the stars so that there would be enough light to see our way back to earth. We landed our rocket safely with the help of BLANCHE BARRETT, JUDY GRAVELY and BETTY HILL, who pulled us in, and MARY JOHNSON, who tied it down. There to greet us were REBECCA HOWERTON and JEAN MILAM. Just as | was ask ing them how they had spent the past ten years, an eerie wail from the other room awakened me and | noticed that SALLY and GLENDA were nowhere in sight and that | wasn't in a rocket. It had al! been a figment of my imagination. | went in the direction of the scream and to my surprise, | saw on the T. V. set, WAYNE HALL playing the villain in a serial. After his pesty ways in high school, | can imagine the delight he is getting by scaring people out of their wits. What a day this had been! | could hardly believe that the rocket trip was a dream. | can still see all of my classmates and | can remember the fun that they were having!
