To the Seniors of ‘55, we leave hopes and aspirations for privileges in the coming year we never knew, To the faculty and principal, we leave our appreciation for their leadership, guidance and understanding for the past four years, Testators: Nancy Gilbert Betty Jeffries CLASS HISTORY OF ‘55 On September 9, 1951, The Wheel of Education began to turn for eighty-five Freshmen. As the wheel turned slowly but surely we were initiated into our four years of hard, but interesting work. Our Freshman year was most successful. Our sponsors,Mr. Jimmy Hunt and Mr, Alvis Barker helped us get acquainted with the routine of workandthe schoolactivities for the year. After werwere settled in our school work, we elected as officers of the two sections: President-Betty Bobbitt, Billy Bennett, Vice President-Faye Blankenship, Josephine Martin; Secretary-Treasurer-Betty Shelton, Nevida Watson. There were picnics, parties, and other school activities to end our first year in high school. After abrief vacation, we continued our strive for higher goals. We were very proud to have three of our outstanding sophomores to win medals at graduation; Faye Blankenship-courtesy, Lois Crowder-Spanish, and Shelby Womack-most religious. Our Class broke a long-standing precedent in that our sponsors were changed from year to year. For this, our Sophomore year, Rev. Earl Fike and Mr. Alvis Barker guided us in becoming more useful stu- dents. WithJosephine Martin at the helm as president, many of us were participants in school sports, assemblies, etc. Other officers for the year were: Vice-president-Jimmy Jones; Secretary-Nevida Watson; Treasurer-Maurice Seay. Entering our Junior year, again with new sponsors, Mrs. Katherine Wilson and Mrs. Martha Sours, the established Junior Play and Junior-Senior banquet enveloped our thoughts, time, and efforts from September to April. The officers for the year were: Josephine Martin-President; Billy Bennett-Vice-president; Faye Blankenship-Secretary; and Maurice Seay-Treasurer. This was the year we gave our play entitled ‘‘It’s Great To Be Crazy’’,in which everyone participated. It was one of the best plays ever to be given at our school. The Junior-Senior banquet was the main event of the year, It was held April 30 at the Country Club with the Hargrave Combo providing the music. Jackie Davis and Margie Ingram were elected as Junior Class King and Queen. When May Day was held, we were very proud to have Barbara Harris and Faye Blankenship represent us in the May Court. At the end of our Junior year, two of our juniors received medals -Faye Blankenship- most religious and Billy Bennett-S.C.A, Citizenship Pin. Returning to school in September 1954, Mrs. Walton, a familiar teacher to us all, and Miss Clement, a new teacher, were our co-sponsors. Early in the year, we elected able class officers and the staff of the Archway, know- ing well that much diligent work would have to be accomplished before that day in June LOD 5: Many new teachers were in our school this year as well as an enrollment of an all- time high and it took weeks of adjusting to teachers and schedules, Activities of our class went along routinely before the Christmas holidays. Upon return to school in January 1955, we were distressed to learn of Mrs. Walton's hospitali- zation. Mrs. Aubria Farmer so capably came in to fill-her place for her absence. This, our Senior year, we are proud to be graduating but a little sorrowful to be leaving the teachers, fellow class mates and other school mates that we have enjoyed knowing through our four years in high school. Further schooling is beckoning many ofour class, marital vows will come to several, while the majority of us will enter the work-a-day world to pursue health, wealth, and happiness. Seeing my old class- mate again brought back memories of ten years ago when 44 proud and dignified seniors had marched up to the stage and received their high school diplomas. I was soon awakened from my dreamy mood by a dis- tinguished-looking gentleman approaching the ramp. Ashe came closer, ES I recognized him to be a former classmate, D. C. Hastings, who is now a Washington diplomat. After making sure that all the passengers were comfortable, I had a nice, long chat with D. C. Being in Washington, he had kept in contact with some of our classmates who were also in the political world. Jimmy Jones (excuse me) Mr. James T.Jones, had recently given up his warehouse business to become a Senator and Sonny Gibson is in the House of Representatives. (Luckily they are in two different houses.) Norman Alderson is the new Secretary of Agriculture, andl hear that Carl Bray has just been named ‘‘Master-Farmer of the Year,’ As D.C. was leaving the plane, he gave me a copy of the Dan River Gazette. Glanc- ing over the front page,I read the headlines ‘‘Curves on 360 Blamed for Accident.’’ The story said that a bus driven by John Harvey Moore had collided with a truck driven by dairy farmer, Andrew Bohannon. The injured were removed to Strader Hospital where Doctor Cleo Strader and Nurse Mary Jane Hill soon had their scratches healed and sent them on their way. The investigating state patrolman, Sgt. Maurice Seay, reported that John Harvey's attention was momentarily distracted by a shapely figure in red dungarees. The bus got out of control as he was approaching a sharp curve in the road, sending the bus head-on into the truck. Lawyer Wayne Crowder, with the able assistance of his sec- retary, Shelby Jean Womack, was successful in persuading Andrew to drop all charges after the insurance adjuster, Guy Nuckols, agreed to pay him for the $2.98 damage. In the social column I read that the Happy Hunting Club was having a meeting at the home of the President and Founder, Jean Carmichael. The chief objective of the club is trapping husbands. It must bring results, for one of its old members, Beatrice Bohannon, gave up a career of bookkeeping for one of housekeeping. After reaching my destination, I dashed into a nearby beauty parlor to have my hair set. Asign over the door read, Arendall Alderson-Beauty Nook, Imagine my surprise when I learned that the owners were my old classma tes, Raynell Arendall and Bunny Alderson. We had a friendly chat, and I learned from them that Betty Shelton was head of a model agency in New York and that two of her models were alumnae of Dan River-- Jewelyn Bowman and Margaret Terry. They model only the most fashionable designs, most of them coming from the Bandbox, an exclusive dress shop, managed by Dorothy Miller. Her head sales-ladies are Margaret Snead and Bernice Hodnett. As I was leaving the beauty parlor, I noticed a very sophisticated lady strolling leisurely down the street. It turned out to be Nevida Watson (now Mrs. Buddy Clark). Nevida said that Buddy was attending the National Dairyman’s Convention, She is the new president of the P.T.A. at Dan River, and they have a little red-haired girl, Melanie, in the first grade. Her teacher is Betty Bobbitt. Also teaching at Dan River are Delma Eanes and Margie Ferguson. Nancy Gilbert is teaching Physical Education. Mrs, Frank Fuller, the former Betty Ann Jeffries, has combined the duties of a minister's wife with those ofakindergarten teacher. Teaching children comes natural to Betty Ann since two of her pupils are her own little twin boys’, Ronny and Donny, Nevida invited me to go with her to see a Broadway play, ‘‘The Follies of 1965’’. I was schocked speechless when I learned that the star of the play was to be none other than pretty, vivacious, MargieIngram. Breathlessly looking over the audience, I spotted Margie’s agent, James Davis, sitting on the front row. Seems Jimmy still has a special attraction for the girls-for with him were Rebecca Young and Sara Jennings, Later I learned that Becky was on her way to Hollywood to make a movie and Sara is the Super- intendent of Nurses at New York City Hospital. Another classmate, Joan Gardner, is making abig name in Hollywood after being a stand-infor Lana Turner ina recent movie. After the show, Nevida and I went backstage to congratulate Margie on her wonder- ful performance. Margie told us that Jackie Davis and Ryland Bennett were co-owners and operators of a sight-seeing busline that operates from New York to Hollywood, Those two boys really know all the sights that are worth seeing! As we were leaving, we ran into another old classmate, Barbara Harris, who was attending the National Secretaries Convention where she had just had the honor of being crowned ‘‘Private Secretary of the Year.’’ Barbara had with her a copy of the TV Guide, and I recognized the face on the cover to be that of Faye Blankenship, who is the summer replacement for Dinah Shore. Her guest singer on frequent occasions has been, the Mario Lanza of old Dan River, Jimmy Guill. Talking over old times, Barbara informed us that Josephine Martin had been crowned ‘‘Miss Glenwood of 1965’’, and Leroy Arthur was named Glenwood’s Outstanding Citizen of the Year’. I told Nevida and Barbara good-by and hurried to my hotel where the night clerk gave me a telegram from my best friend, Lois Crowder. (Incidently, Lois is the first woman ever to become Attorney-General of the United States.) By way of the grapevine Lois had learned that I was in New York and was coming to see me the next day.
