MORRIS MR, RICKMAN AT WORK IN HIS OFFICE THE SENIOR CLASS DAN RIVER HIGH SCHOOL Sponsor...seceecoeeeee Mr. Frank W. Motley Principal ...ccossecrccesse Mr. R. H, Rickman DEDICATED TO FATHER TIME I In September of 1948, --freshmen entered Dan River's gate. We began our classes with much joy, To find, Mr. Barker was no play boy. Now Mrs. Walton, was quite a whizz- She would give us questions and then a quiz. English and History was play to us, Because our teachers made them such, So drew the first year to a close, Nothing to do, but dream and doze. II Then once in 1949, We started the year feeling fine. , Yes, Sophomores, and very loud, It was detention hall for our crowd. Now Miss Alderson was very glad, But the thoughts of detention made us sad, Truly we were yet more sad, When we lost Mr. Watkins, a very fine lad. He was a swell teacher and not too rough, Unless we made things just a bit too tough. So ended our sophomore year at last, Another summer to come and pass, III Juniors, mighty and strong, With a new sponsor to guide us along. laughing Irish Eyes, the annual play, Was a tremendous success in every way. The Junior-Senior Banquet was right on the ball, With loads of fun for one and all. A May Day Festival-another great day, With songs, dances and costumes gay. On June 4 we left once more, Looking forward to next year and fun galore. IV Seniors at last and exceedingly proud, To have Mr. Motley with our crowd. To help us and guide us through each hour, And make each day seem gay as a flower, Going Modern, our Senior Play, Taught us a lesson we dare to Say. As a memorable event of our Senior year, The Junior-Senior Banquet, We'll treasure dear, It seems our ''Sneak Day made a hit, We think it helped us quite a bit. Schooldays are recalled through the memory of friends, “To each of us these friends are different, But to all of us L there are two whom we have in common, Mr. Barker and Mr, Hunt. Mr. Barker has been affiliated with Dan River during his entire career as a teacher, which includes over nine years of service and devotion to his calling. Mr. Hunt has only been at Dan River two years, but during that time, he has become a symbol to us of fair play. Never too busy when we need them, always there greeting us with a cherry smile, they will long be remembered for their thoughtfulness and generosity. Because of these qual- ities which we consider first in friends, the Senior Class wishes to dedicate the 1952 ARCHWAY toMr, Alvis W. Barker and Mr. James Hunt. Most studious in our class, are Milton and Glenna; Doris and Frank, we will say; With either of these you've got a winner, Most school spirited in everyway. Lorraine and John are most polite; As far as we're concerned, that's right. For most cooperative in our class; Best dressed are Aubrey and Maggie; Grady and Rebecca cannot be surpassed. We're sure glad they don't look baggie. For most athletic, we have two that's best; Our Julia and Nick exceed all the rest, 7 bg Whatever we say, we don't wanna be dirty; Most conceited in this place; But Carroll and Shirley are the most flirty, Are Nick and Pauline with an upturned face, L. B, and Frances are the biggest pests; They just don't seem to let you rest, Bernice and Milton now take heed; Most bashful are Dema and Earl; Are the most likely to succeed, A conversation they can't unfurl, Shirley Gravette and Frank Sheets; Are best looking. That's reet! It's Grady Prevette and Doris Tate; Ruth Merle and Aubrey Griffin; For friendliest, to us they really rate, Were voted most popular and we ain't spifin'! Glenna and John, best all around; We searched everywhere, they're the best to be found. Loading Of Buses Those pictured are as follows: Carroll Edwards, Bobby Blankenship, Miss Jones on dt Virginia Motley, and Barbara Jones. Ladies of leisure Deloris Motley, Rosa Lee Hodnett, and Lorrene Tomlin, PROPHECY Here it is--1960--eight years since we graduated from dear old Dan River, Those eight years have brought about many changes in the lives of the 52 graduates of '52, In planning a reunion party, this fact has been brought vividly to my attention, Of course, in order to send invitations to all my former classmates, it was necessary tolearntheir present addresses, Indoing this I had to practically conduct a survey, thus learning that quite a few of my fellow graduates have done very well for themselves. For example, Shirley Blankenship is now singing with Lawrence Tibet in the Metropolitan Opera, while Frank Sheets has become an admiral in the United States Navy. (Just goes to show what Dan River graduates can do, ) Of course, I thought the success of these two old friends was wonderful, but whenIlearned of Aubrey Griffin's achievement I was just simply tickled to death . He has worked up from his position as parking lot attendant to President of the Ford Corporation, (Anybody want a Ford--just see Aubrey--by appointment only, of course.) Speaking of cars, guess which two members of our class of '52 are now featured in the World Famous Stock Car Races?--that's right--none other than Dorothy Ann Rodgers onher Fordand Rebecca Seamster onthat WONDERFUL Pontiac (excuse me but I just LOVE Pontiac's), I understand that several of our fellow-graduates have made quite a name for themselves in Hollywood. Of course, all of them didn't gain success in the movies but from what I hear Milton Gregory has become another Errol Flynn, making all the young girls (and old ones too) faint right in their tracks. I learned that Harold Crowder has also made quite a hit in the movies with the hillbilly fans. (I hope he'll be just as happy in Hollywood as he would have been with Glen Thompson. ) But movie-making isn't the only business in Hollywood. There is the night club business and I understand it is simply booming since Carroll Edwards took over as manager of Ciro's. Of course, Carroll wouldn't think of hiring just any chorus girls-oh!no!-not OUR Carroll, He rounded up a group of girls from Dan River! You know Carroll--nothing but the best! Included in this group were Nell Jennings, Ruth Merle Shelton, Maggaline Moore, and Lorrene Tomlin with Virginia Anderson as their director. Now, Carroll knew that every nightclub must have a beautiful cigarette girl, so naturally, he got Shirley Gravette (remember, she was voted the prettiest girlin the Senior class) to fill that position. I also learned from my many inquiries that Peggy Batterman is a featured singer at Ciro's at the present time. (So it seems that D. R. has at least one night club practically monopolized. ) Also in the world of sports, two D.R. graduates have become well known, Nick Collie, I understand played in the World Series last year while Grady Prevette was star quarterback for Notre Dame, (Oh! those broad shoulders. Swoon! Swoon!) From Irish Clayton, who is now a famous comedienne on television, I learned that Frances Moore is also quite popular with the T, V. fans as a lady wrestler. And guess who her manager is ?--none other than Catherine Davis. I'm sure all of you remember the loud socks Thomas Simmons used to wear to school, (How could you forget them!) Well, he is now the owner of a sock factory, specializing in brilliant colors, of course, And holding the positions of designer and foreman in his factory are none other than John Guill and Billy Oakes, Alsointhe manufacturing business are Roy Wilson and Earl Guill who are part- ners intheir owntypewriter factory. (I'msure Miss Tarpley would be happy to learn — that her two little pests have learned to put typewriters together as well as take them apart, ) Harville Norton Florist Motor Co. Inc.
