This club, first intro- duced in the Dan McCarty High School in February, 1954, was named the Helen Miller Future Teachers Club in honor of a former teacher. The FTA seeks to encourage young people to cultivate in themselves the qualities of personality and character which are the foundation of successful teaching, acquaint them with the inspiring story of the public schools, the part free schools have played in the development of our democratic way of life, and the heroic pioneering associated with their development and expansion, :orovide them with correct information about opportunities in the various fields of educa- tion. The Library Assistants are under the supervision of Mrs. Hagel. The purpose of the club is to learn what the resources of the library are, to render service to fellow students and faculty, and to improve the library service of the school. Membership is open to any student who is interested in service to others and who has the necessary qualities of scholarship and character. f

Pendergrass. The Future Business Leaders of America was first organized in Dan McCarty High School in 1954. This club is sponsored by a department of the National Education Asso- ciation, with affiliated professional associa- tions serving every state in the nation. There' OFFICERS are over 900 chapters of F.B.L.A. in high schools and colleges throughout the United States. Printed forms are mailed to over 24,000 members and sponsors. The first chapter of F.B.L.A. was organized in 1952 and was devoted to youth development and community service. Each chapter decides upon and adopts its own projects and pro- grams. The local chapter operates under its own constitution. The clubs also buy the letters for those participating in the major sports, and sweaters for the senior members of the various teams.
