Within your generation mankind must decide upon a peaceful course, any other will lead to world destruction. The preceding generation-passes on to you the political, social, and economic ideologies which have originated and come into full flower dur- ing the past few years, and the inventions and discoveries that have the potentialities of producing the greatest civilization yet known to man, or on the other hand, the total destruction of mankind. The ideals and labors ot the men and women of your genera- tion will decide the social struggle which has now divided our modern world into two great ideological camps. We hope that you can meet the challenge. To the Annual Staff and Sponsor: You have done a splendid piece of work in the production of this edition of the Santa Lucian. It the years to come we will look through its pages with pleasant memories. We feel that the class of '55 can take :ride in the staFF and its accomplishment. In the presence of the above, we do sign and witness this document for the Class of 1955. ,,,.. 1.3 .- .J l i ' tl in EACHER'S PETS ir.. HIM19 ., g As we, the class of 1955, glance backward a few years, . pleasant memories overtakc us and crowd into our ity' - r ., , 5 . My W' J X 'N thoughts. We remember that in our first year in Senior High School as Rats , we were sponsored by Pop Osteen and Captain Earley. We elected Eugene Bailey, presi- dent, Pat Crowley, vice-president Wanda Goins, secre- tary, and Ed Altman, treasurer. Our Student Council representatives were Buck Bryan and James Biles. We were well represented in the Glee Club and Band and on the Green and White Staff. Bill Childress won his first stripe on the varsity 'Football team, and several boys started their careers in football by playing on the B team that year. Again our memories rise when we recall our sophomore year. Our sponsors were Mrs. Rentz, Miss Sanborne, and Captain Earley. Again we elected Eugene Bailey, presi- dent, and Pat Crowley, vice-president. Gari Dein Sheffield was our secretary, and Alyce Terry was treasurer. The Student Council representatives were Buck Bryan and Pat Crowley. We were again well represented in all the school organizations including the honor clubs Joanne Kelz and Patty Murphy were on the cheering squad The Sophomore Senior Picnic was a great success Because of the increase in the size of the classes we were told that this annual picnic would not take place after this year. Lillian Burney Courtney Stanton We began our third year with the distinction of being the first iunior class in the new Dan McCarty High School. Our sponsor was Mr. Shelton. Leading our class this year were David Haughton, president, Vent Lindsey, vice-presi- dent, Wanda Goins, secretary, and Gari Dein Sheffield, treasurer. Student Council representatives were Buck Bryan, Alyce Terry, Steve Topol, and Pat Crowley, who was later replaced by Marvin McKinley. Two new clubs were or- ganized-the Keyettes and the Wheel Club. Again we were represented in all the school activities. Ten members of our class were tapped for membershipin the National Honor Society. Loo-king over our old calendar of events, we remember the fine Stunt Night, which our class sponsored that year, and the outstanding Junior Play, Young Lincoln . Both were great successes financially, as well as artistically. Next came a great thrill-we received our long-awaited class rings. There were thrills and more thrills over the Junior-Senior Prom, the first one to be held in the gym. It was wonderful. Most of us waded through our exams, and we could then look forward to becoming high and mighty seniors. Our representatives to Girls' State in Tallahassee were Glenda Cail and Joanne Kelz. Boys' State representatives were Buck Bryan, 'Marvin Mc- Kinley, David Haughton and Steve Topal. As we gather in the corridors of Dan McCarty High School during our last year, we recall all the wonderful times we've had in the past. For the class officers we elected, David Haughton, president, Steve Topol, vice- president, Wanda Goins, secretary, and Alyce Terry, treas- urer. Holding the reins this last year are Mrs. Kuhn, Mrs. Scharfschwerdt, Mrs. Davidson, Mrs. Ropp, and Mrs. Camp- bell. Eugene Bailey was elected student council president. The other student council representatives forthe senior class are Buck Bryan, vice-president, Alyce Terry, secretary, Marvin McKinley, chaplain, and Wanda Goins. As school closed, we knew it would be our last year in old Ft. Pierce High School, because the new high school would be ready for our junior year. CUTEST COUPLE -gf ft A. The title of the play was Young Lincoln . It was a story of the early life of Lin- coln. Barry Reed and Nancy Negus had the leading roles. Barry played Lincoln and Nancy played Ann Rutledge, Lincoln's first sweetheart. The play told of Lincoln's first ventures into politics. lt concluded with the death of Ann Rutledge and an inspiring speech by Lincoln. Barry and Nancy were ably supported by Charles Snellgrove, as Ann's suitor Diane Whitice as a gossipy old lady, and Buck Bryan as Jack Armstrong, a ruffian who later turned into one of Lincoln's best friends. The play was well received by all who saw it and all our class was proud of the play. Of course we all realized that most of the credit for the play should go to Mr. Dick Shelton, who directed it. He worked us hard but we all enioyed it. The cast asked to thank- Mrs. Strickland and the Glee Club for the help they gave us. Also, the stage crew which was headed by Bob Meier and Bob Poysell did a fine job. All the cast at the end of the play began looking forward to the Senior Play when we once again could display our talents upon the stage. vw - J' 135 ,KW ' 'f' 1 ' 'A 'QW V ' wg N 'W rf-...mn .::,,n. J muhis hgadache -the news is the news, is the news- - Realizing the need for a newspaper that iii would be an asset to the school as well as one that the student body would accept and read, the 1954-55 Green and White, endowed with spirit, and newfound iournalism knowledge, and blessed with a hard working staff, suc- ceeded in publishing an outstanding school paper which regenerated the interest of all. With a completely revised format, and by articles gradually increasing in quality and quantity, the Green and White was able to achieve city, state and national publicity by being awarded high rating honors in tourneys conducted by press associations. The newspaper, this year, was also fortunate in having a complete photo laboratory at the school, which enabled it to print exclusive pictures ot students and school activities at Dan McCarty High. One ot the highlights of the year, was the fourteen page special Turkey Day Edition, the Steve Topol, Editor largest Green and White in the school history. ku ' 1- 2 5 ' Q H. F. Q J ' . This almost turned into a swimming meet as the rain came down in torrents. All-conference Bill Childress and alternate-captain Danny Warnock alternated on the ball carrying with Bill scoring the three T'D's. The picture shows Chil- dress on his way to a touchdown. The Eagles really wanted this one and they got it. .JRT PIERCE. -on -' J , .ne Dan McCarty Higi. 'chool Eagles opened their season against Stuart. Traditionally, this is iusti: warm-up game, but this year, the Eagles received a severe shock. The Eagles went into this game with a lot of confidence and came out of it wondering what hit them. Stuart was really up for the game and the Eagles were happy to come out with a 0-O tie. FORT PIERCE 'l3-PAHOKEE 'I9 This was one of the most important games of the year. The Eagles played a good game, but Paha- kee's Rosenberg was just too good. Rosenberg scored all three of Paho- kee's touchdowns and played bril- liantly on defense. Pahokee went on to win the conference champion- ship. ...Rl I . : . JRLANDO E. JE- rf WATER 6 The- Dan McCarty Eagles turned giant.. killer when they iourneyed to Orlando to play AA Edgewater High School. Orlando picked this for their homecoming game. Edge- water, before the game, was rated tenth in the state. The Eagles, how- ever, were not dismayed, and in the opening second of the second quarter, Lug Tomlinson picked up an Edgewater fumble and went over for the touchdown. The try for the point was good. Edgewater scored in the final period, but due to a bad snap by the center, the try for the point was no good and Fort Pierce went on to win. FORT PlERCE 20-POMPANO 6 With Billy Childress scoring twice and Pat Richmond once, the Eagles won their second conference vic- tory. David Rountree and Mark Holloway played good games in the line and Ronnie Parker pitched several pretty passes. The picture shows all conference Bill Childress driving over for a touchdown. 'VT' F. it 8, .T FORT PIERCE 26-NEW SMYRNA 19 ln a game that was supposed to be an easy one for the Eagles, they met surprisingly tough opposition. Fort Pierce could not get moving until late in the game. With Ron- nie Parker throwing some pretty passes in the last quarter, the Eagles scored three times to win the game. The picture shows Buddy Warner as he plunges over in the final seconds of the game for the winning touchdown. FORT PIERCE 13-BELLE GLADE 7 The Eagles traveled to Belle Glade and met surprisingly tough opposi- tion. All teams seem to play their best games against Fort Pierce and Belle Glade was no exception. FORT PIERCE 37-LAKE WORTH 0 The Eagles game with Lake Worth was perhaps the best one they played all year. Every thing they did was right. Lake Worth had, up to this time, lost only one confer- ence game. Almost all the Eagle backs broke into the scoring with Pat Richmond making a spectacular run. The picture again shows Bill Childress driving over for the touch- down. FORT PIERCE 27-CLEWISTON 20 With Phenomenal Bill Childress leading the way, Dan McCarty High School won a stubborn vic- tory over Clewiston. The game, built up as a duel between Chil- dress and Richard Bethea of Clew- iston, proved to be very thrilling. Childress scored all 27 points for Fort Pierce and sparkled on de- fense. Other Fort Pierce boys who played brilliantly in their last ap- pearance on Jaycee Field were Tom Bruhn, Mark Holloway, Buck Bryan, Bob Pieper, Austin Mills, Lug Tomlinson, Dan Hurst, Bill Davis, Ed Altman, and Dan War- nock. -'E 1 : ffl.
