The big plus for the Spartans this year was their work as a unit. Headlines for the defensive unit that Coach Joe Anooshian labeled as the key to our success, were the two line- backers Kreg Elias and Mike Fraschetti and monster man Billy Korn. The rushing pistons for the Spartan Machine were half-backs Ruben Lopez and Alexander and fullback Dennis Gainey. Damien ' s vicious running attack was compli- mented by a fierce aerial attack led by quarterback Joe Carroll . Carroll ' s favorite receiver was Steve Gaston, Anooshian feels that they should continue their success at the Varsity level . As Coach Anooshian sees it The biggest thing they have going for them is their winning attitude . y o ' ■im w%. w ' X w t. i 4 rfs f j _1 1 79 W ' i in •i .A. ' T jfA;- w. V - t. HELP!! Pg. 105 The 1973-74 Varsity Soccer season proved to be the best Damien has ever had. The highlights started when Damien entered the Alemany Tournament undeafeted and unscored upon where we took first place. Next the Spartans returned home to host the first annual Damien Invitational Tournament where we placed fifth out of the sixteen entries. From there we started league play where we tallied up 12 wins, 2 losses and ties, outscoring our opponents 61-8. By consistently staying in the GIF top 10 poll the Spartans were allowed a chance to compete for the GIF crown, un- fortunately Damien did not play THEIR game and fell to Baldwin Park 1-0. It was a quick ending to a long season. Several personal achievements were ob- tained by: Bart Sullivan setting a new OIF scoring record in one season and also voted first team in SAL and he received all GIF nominations. Also on first team in SAL were Rick Davis, John Evans, and Rob Lamb. Ken IVIabie and Tom Fahey were voted for second team and Mike Potter and GG Ramirez were voted Honorable Mention. Under the coaching of Al IVIistri the Spartans closed the season with an overall record of 20 wins, 3 losses and 1 tie. Bart Sullivan puts on a move. Soccer Finney shows style! The Damien tracksters never gave into de- feat, which was one virtue that every member of the team possessed. Although the team scores indicated de- feats for the team as a whole, there were a number of outstanding performers. Such standouts as Ron Ramierez (run- ning dear), and Steve (streaker) Beck of the hurdles and the sprints and anchor man in the 440 relay respectively, pro- vided the opponents with overwhelming competition. Other outstanding indivi- duals were Bob Lamb in the running events, and John Friedenbach and Jodie Eiland, the distance aces. Doug Pye and John Roach under the super- vision of Coach Washing- ton, kept the competition alive in the shot put events There is a great deal of talent returning next year. Lead by captain and all-CIF candidate Larry Pekarcik, the pitching staff was a bright spot on the team. Yet behind the pitchers was a solid defense. Led by co-captain Gerard Piccioni, Dean Sickles, Billy Karr, and Bart Sullivan the Spartans held their opponents to very few hits. Players showing their blossom- ing talents early in the year were Bob Alexander, John Pignotti, and Frank Pastore, with Pete Baltierra leading the players in the pre-season. Ewert Mr. Mrs. Dan Compston Mr. Mrs. David Hunter and Family Mr. Mrs. James Montague The Yearbook Staff would like to thank Mrs. Fulvio and the other office people for all their help. Thanks to Fr. Cronin for saying NO although we took it to mean YES. Mrs. Felps also deserves much credit for putting up with us. She always kept us in good spirits in our dull moments with her WILD STORIES. We made an old lady out of her. To Mrs. Walker, and Ron from Wayne Book, thanks! But we can ' t forget Dennis Proud, our yearbook representative, who was at the school with us until 2:00 A.M. to help us finish the book. We express our graditude to all of our teachers who did not report us to Fr. Cronin when we cut class. I have worked on the yearbook for two years now and both years have experienced great problems, but I know if there was just one more chance, it would be perfect. Ha Ha the universal excuse. n ' A ' 211 . ? -v ■ w ■ ' Oi V ' .- v C - .v ' ' 7 f f« 9
