JOHN STERLING Social Studies FROM INCEPTION TO PRESENT Under the direction of department chairman Mr. Michael Tonsing, the social studies curriculum experi- enced growth and change. Based upon a format of symposium discussions, ex- tensive outside readings, and deep, probing research, the honors course in American history gave students an un- precedented opportunity to develop the skills of the his- t orian. A revamped course in American government taught by Mr. Sterling drew seniors to consider America ' s role in international affairs. MR. RICHARD DIAZ Spanish FATHER MICHAEL MAHER, S.S., C.C. Chairman, Language Dept. ALIEN TONGUES TAUGHT Language is the basis of communication. To understand a country ' s culture, a basic knowledge of their language is helpful. Damien High combined the old and the new in their language department by offering three foreign languages. Classical Latin which covers not only the pronunciation and trans- lation of that language but also the culture of Rome was taught by the chairman of the language department, Father Michael Maher, and Mr. Kuhn. The Spanish classes were taught realistically by Mr. Diaz and Father Gilsenan in that the emphasis was on the conversational aspects. Father Fergus taught his students about France as well as the French language. With this background the students of Damien High have an advantage in understanding other cultures. ■1H F 5 ° 4fl y MR.
