Dear Class of ' 68, It is of little wonderment to me that for many Americans this seems a time of continuing crises. Change in areas of personal import always begets fear and con- fusion in those who lack perception. But change can be good, and each generation has not only a right but a duty to dismiss the superfluous of the old and to expand those traditions that are fitting and worthy. I cannot accept that we are faced today with a series of crises to be surmounted ; rather, we are offered opportunities of expansion and growth which sometimes baffle us, which require delicacy in execution, but which ultimately offer great hope for all. Perhaps the spirit o f our age is best summed up by George Bernard Shaw. Other people, he said, see things and say: ' Why? ' . . . Rut I dream things that never were and I say: ' Why not? ' Father Damien, whom we honor by our school name, spent his life bringing about change for those whom he served. Today, many young Americans are strong supporters of the Peace Corps and Vista. Damien was a true precursor of these movements; in accepting perpetual isolation from the outside world he demon- strated a degree of self-giving which cannot hut serve as a beacon to those who follow. Let the class of 1968 carry with it his ideals, thus insuring that the changes you envision will be changes for good. Sineerelv in the Sacred Hearts, Reverend .lames Mitchell, S.S., C.C. Principal DEDICATION: FATHER DAMIEN In keeping with our theme, this year ' s SPARTIATE is dedicated to Father Damien. Our school ' s new namesake, though of the nineteenth century, epitomizes the type of Christian love so extolled in our modern twentieth century Church. Father Damien, ultimately ravaged, though never defeated, by the dreadful dis- ease of leprosy which he so valiantly fought, set a high standard for Spartans who would dedicate themselves to his high ideals. - 4 FROM OLD... TO NEW It has been man ' s continual fault to be overly conservative or liberal. Too seldom does he realize that it is important to follow a middle course, neither to change things for the sake of change, nor to keep all to which he is accustomed. Man must be willing to retain what is best of the old, while at the same time experimenting with innovation. He must then find the courage to accept and implement that which is best of the new. This year ' s SPARTIATE theme is From Old to New. On the pages of this book we chronicle the rise of many new institutions and traditions built upon past experiences. As we said, improvement takes courage. We hope that this book will form part of the foundation for even brighter tomorrows. ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY ■■■■■■ ■l BOOK GRADING 55-A GUIDANCE OFFERED FATHER JAMES MITCHELL, S.S., C.C. Principal FATHER MARTIN O ' LOGHLEN, S.S., C.C. Vice-Principal This year ' s administration was truly a blend of old and new. Father James Mitchell, in his second year as principal, continued to introduce many changes and con- solidate gains made during the pre- ceeding year. Bringing a renewed vigor to the main office was Father O ' Loghlen, new Vice-Principal and Dean of Studies. Returning were Father Dennis as Dean of Discipline, Father Dowling as Guidance Director, and Father Fergus as Public Relations Director. President of the Spartan Parents ' Association was Mr. Frank Burns, who served as one of the principal ' s chief advisors. With an influence sometimes strongly felt but more often incon- spicuously applied, the administra- tion directed Damien in the pursuit of excellence. FATHER JOSEPH DOWLING, S.S., C.C, Guidance Director FATHER FERGUS DONNELLY, S.S., C.C, Public Relations Director MR. FRANK BURNS President, Spartan Parents ' Association FATHER PETER DENNIS, S.S., C.C. Dean of Discipline ENGLISH DEPARTMENT TAILORS COURSES This year has seen major changes in the curriculum of the English depart- ment. For the first time, each section of each class found that the course work had been tailored to their specific needs and abilities. Under the chairmanship of Mr. Louis Kuhn, the department developed new extended courses in honors English and remedial English. FATHER JOSEPH McGEADY, S.S., C.C. English MR. LOUIS KUHN Chairman, English Dept. ' • : «u FATHER MALACHY MURTAGH, S.S., C.C. English MR. CLARENCE ll.WXES English MR. MICHAEL TONSING Chairman, Social Studies Dept. MR. JOHN STERLING Social Studies FROM INCEPTION TO PRESENT Under the direction of department chairman Mr. Michael Tonsing, the social studies curriculum experi- enced growth and change. Based upon a format of symposium discussions, ex- tensive outside readings, and deep, probing research, the honors course in American history gave students an un- precedented opportunity to develop the skills of the his- t orian. A revamped course in American government taught by Mr. Sterling drew seniors to consider America ' s role in international affairs. World geography and world history, taught by Father McSweeney and Father McCabe, provided a background of knowledge. Mr. Coston headed a business department that offered economics and busi- ness law. FATHER KENNETH McCABE, S.S., C.C. Social Studies FATHER DANIEL McSWEENY, S.S., C.C. Social Studies MR. WILLIAM COSTON Chairman, Business Dept. Lh. it, MR. MAWLUD NAJJAR Science MR. HOWARD TEITELBAUM Chairman, Science Dept. FATHER PATRICK TRAVERS, S.S., c.c. Math BROTHER GERALD DUFFY, S.S., C.C. Science FATHER MICHAEL BROOKS, S.S., C.C, Chairman, Math Dept. Damien High School ' s science de- partment displayed a new look this year. Under the leadership of vet- eran science teacher Mr. Howard Teitelbaum, a new staff was assem- bled and the entire curriculum was updated. Mr. Boardman taught the new BSCS biology course in a newly equipped lab. Mr. Najjar brought new depth and experience to the chemistry and physical science classes. Brother Duffy introduced the department ' s sequence to fresh- men, striving to familiarize begin- ning students with the ever develop- ing language and technique of the sciences. 4 lv c3 ' DISCOVERIES MADE The mathematics depart- ment, headed by Father Brooks, also deepened and broadened its offerings. A pre- algebra course for freshhmen was introduced along with a new honors math course open to sophomores. Rather than the traditional course in trig- onometry for seniors, the de- partment offered a diversified program including elements of analytic geometry, calculus, and probability theory. MR.ELRIC BOARDMAN Science MR. RICHARD DIAZ Spanish FATHER MICHAEL MAHER, S.S., C.C. Chairman, Language Dept. ALIEN TONGUES TAUGHT Language is the basis of communication. To understand a country ' s culture, a basic knowledge of their language is helpful. Damien High combined the old and the new in their language department by offering three foreign languages. Classical Latin which covers not only the pronunciation and trans- lation of that language but also the culture of Rome was taught by the chairman of the language department, Father Michael Maher, and Mr. Kuhn. The Spanish classes were taught realistically by Mr. Diaz and Father Gilsenan in that the emphasis was on the conversational aspects. Father Fergus taught his students about France as well as the French language. With this background the students of Damien High have an advantage in understanding other cultures. ■1H F 5 ° 4fl y MR. EDWARD ADAMS Speech ,« FATH. R MICHAEL GILSEI VS, S.S., C.C, Spanish :- . n S FATHER PATRICK SMYTH, S.S., C.C. Chairman, Religion Dept. The study of religion took on a new look at Damien High this year as the school initiated a modern approach to the subject. Father Smyth and his staff introduced a totally new text series in all classes. The new texts were designed to promote class participation and free expression. Father Smyth, chairman of the religion department, was assisted by Father Dowl- ing, Father Maher, Father McGeady, Father Gilsenan, Father McSweeney, Father McCabe, Father Murtagh, and Bro- ther Duffy. DEVELOPING SPIRITUALLY AND PHYSICALLY A vigorous athletic program, with new athletic director Mr. Jim Knapp at the helm, has started what looks like a new era in interscholastic sports competition at Damien High School. Surrounding himself with capable and imaginative coaches, Mr. Knapp seemed to inject a new pride and enthusiasm into the whole student body. Men like Mr. John Sterling, Mr. Ed Adams, Mr. William Cos- ten, Mr. Richard Diaz, Mr. Elric Boardman, and Mr. Clarence Haynes, gave Spartan athletes a renewed will to win. MR. JUNIORS MATURE For the class of 1969, their junior year meant an increase in responsibility and leadership at Damien High School Gone were the carefree days of their sophomore year. These were but happy memories in the distant past. Juniors met the challenge of this transition period. They proved that they were able to accept the mantle of leadership which would soon be draped upon their shoulders. Academically, the third year men found this year to be the toughest they had yet faced. Those who ran the gauntlet of the new honors courses George Allan Besheer Black Vince Cicero John Cocke John Cunico O E) ' Rory Agnello Rocco Anzaldi r Rick Armijo Paul Arroyo Gil Astruc Bruce Bartulis Tom Baumann emerged more enlightened, more informed, and more inspired in the diverse fields of literature, algebra, and American history. Athletically, the class showed that it would not be outdone in the pursuit of success. Juniors played a key role in the highly successful ' football season. They also participated actively on the varsity level soccer, basketball, baseball, and track teams. Socially, the juniors showed their talents by hosting a thoroughly , enjoyable Prom. Much hard work and skillful preparation made such a i fine Prom possible. Attendance and participation at other social func- tions was second to none. All of these together indicate a maturing and capable junior class. As the graduating seniors leave, they can be assured that they are handing the reins of leadership to worthy students. SOPHS CONTINUED September saw a spirited sophomore class charge into the new academic year under the leadership of Pat Rodgers, president; Paul Schiro, vice- president; Paul Lu cifora, treasurer; and Fred Andrade, secretary. Much of their sophomore exuberance was worked off on the gridiron, on the soccer field, on the track, on the dia- mond, and in the gym. A wide and var- ied program of activities included a number of dances, extremely vocal rally participation, an enjoyable trip to Disneyland, an exciting swim party, and successful competition in several speech contests. Notable individual accomplishments ranged from athletics to academics, from classroom to dance floor. As their secondary edu- cation began, they were introduced to many new experiences, most of which they handled with a high degree of composure. The freshmen became fa- miliar with many new courses such as algebra, Latin, speech, along with the old traditionals of religion and English. They also were taught respect for the seniors during a three day period of orientation. Athletically they were introduced to such sports as tackle football, soccer and baseball. In other activities they showed a high degree of participation. During rallies their higher pitched voices were always to be heard. This will be the first group of stu- dents to go through a full four years at the new Damien High. Larry Cronin, Social Chairman, planned and carried out two summer dances to raise money for the A.S.B. treasury and provide for summer recreation. They were successes both socially and financially. When the year started, the officers were eager to do their jobs well. President Frank Schiro presided at A.S.B. meetings, keeping order and listening to questions and griev- ances. SOCIAL CHAIRMAN LARRY CRONIN DO JOB WELL Interclub Council in the time of its existence, and backed up Frank in all matters of school business. Danny Carroll, Treasurer, kept a record of all monies going into and leaving the treasury. Brian Maloney recorded minutes of all A.S.B. meetings as Secretary. One of the most successful projects of the A.S.B. was the free dance held March 3. This dance was the first of its kind: both admission and refreshments were free. A.S.B. Social Chairman, Larry Cronin, was in charge of the dance. He arranged all the details and everyone agreed that it was a fine success. The A.S.B. officers are elected officials, charged with representing the student bodv in school affairs. The 1968 A.S.B. officers have met their responsibilities. A.S.B. VICE PRESIDENT JACK BURKE A.S.B. TREASURER DANNY CARROLL A.S.B. SECRETARY BRIAN MALONEY The Spartiate, following along with the new look at Damien, has a fresh new look of its own. With the addition of a Journalism Class at Damien this year, the Spartiate benefited greatly. One of the changes in this year ' s Spartiate is the publishing company, now Yearbook House. SPARTIATE A major improvement this year was the addition of color throughout the annual. The snorts section was covered more thoroughly, as were activities and clubs. The staff worked long and hard in order to provide the student body with a superior annual. Along with the rest of Damien, the school newspaper had a new image. The name was changed to The Laconian , representing the place in which the Spartans had lived. The paper was published by a new company, greatly improving the ap- pearance. Editor-in-Chief Chris Miller, along with the rest of the staff worked long, hard hours to produce an excellent paper. Mr. Tonsing participated as an advisor, giving the staff an oppor- tunity to experience the learning process. The paper brought the news, both past and future, to the student body. The paner was also circulated among P.C. Girls ' . St. Lucy ' s, and the neigh- boring eighth graders. i 3 421 v €h 57 EXPLORERS, NEW CLUB ON CAMPUS SCIENCE CLUB IS ACTIVE LATIN CLUB LEARNS FINE ARTS PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB Officers: R. Macaluso, C. The second half was a defensive struggle as neither team was able to score. The San Gabriel Mission game was to decide second place in the Santa Fe League and a possible GIF berth. Changes abounded in our young school already noted for its vigorous pace. New construction, new teachers, new students, new challenges — and, yet, with all the change, the school was unmistakably Damien. The new only complemented the best of the old, be- neath the imposing image of a benign Sacred Heart. 134 NEW TEACHERS BRING NEW ENERGY Father Omakanim, S.S., C.C. Father Kengen, S.S., C.C. New additions to the faculty for the Spring semester were Father Omaka- nim, who brought a fresh approach to the religion department, Mr. Don Drummond, who added his expertise in the field of English, and Father Emile Kengen, who came to the staff to help with science teaching. Father Joseph McGeady left temporarily at the end of the first semester to finish graduate studies in English. Mr. Drummond IMJUUUlMMMM| mi%Mltjy ' tfMSI r i IN APPRECIATION This yearbook would not be complete without considering a man who has influenced all of us here at Damien. As a teacher Mr. Howard Teitelbaum has opened the minds of students to the world of physics and math. Even more than this he has given his students the power to reason and analyze for themelves, an even greater gift. As a coach he has excelled in conditioning his athletes and teaching them both the fundamentals of soccer and football, and the lessons to be gleaned from total dedication. 136 9BI ■ !«p As a senior counselor, Mr. Teitelbaum has demonstrated tact and wisdom. He has been a zealous participant in student, affairs and has spent long hours moderating extra-curricular activities. AND GRATITUDE Coming to the school four years ago, Mr. Teitelbaum has witnessed many changes on our campus. He has helped maintain Spartan tra- dition, yet has always encouraged new ideas and improvements. Mr. Teitelbaum has merited the ad- miration and respect of all who have had the good fortune to know him. 137 May 29, 1968 Fellow students and friends of Damien High School: Another year is coming to a close and the first class of seniors will be leav- ing Damien High School; four years ago they were new to Pomona Catholic, soon they will be old grads of Damien. It is a never ceasing pattern of life. That which is new today, is old tomorrow. We have tried to sandwich between the thin covers of a book so many memories of unique experiences. We attempted to preserve the memories of this transitory life, the nostalgia of future years. Speaking for the staff, we hope that we have served our purpose: putting in print that which has taken place during 1968, preserving the best of the new for posterity. There are so many people who helped on the staff, it is impossible to name them all here. But those who did outstanding work were Franz Brown, who did virtually all our layouts, Bill Archibald and Stephan Lamb, who were in charge of copy, Doug Edelbrock, who helped out in crises of every kind. Also Paul Crea, our assistant editor, who helped and took my place in times of need. Thanks to Dennis Loudon, our photographer. Without him, this yearbook would not have been possible. Also thanks to Mike Griffin, who offered us moral support when we most needed it. We would like to give special thanks to Mr. Tonsing, our advisor, for giving freely of his advice and knowledge. He gave the annual a truly professional touch. The staff was constantly indebted to Mr. Robert Herrick, our photography advisor; we feel that the increased quality of student photography was due considerably to his untiring efforts. The expanded ad section speaks for itself. Under Rick Brink ' s business management the Spartiate has more than paid its own way. Thank you for waiting for the publication of the Spartiate, and We hope you thoroughly enjoy it.
