This is a welcome accomplishment in our day for the reason that the Fathers of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, who conduct your school, in coming to Pomona have resumed a mission of their Community that was amongst the earliest in California. In fact, theirs was the first high school in the State of California. We are hopeful that the accomplishments of your class will help to establish the reputation of renown under the guidance of your beloved teachers. With sincere best wishes, I am M Faithfully yours in Christ, S ' y. ' -,. L7 h ' archbishop of Los Angeles ' Monsignor Sharpe ARCHDIOCESE OF LOS ANGELES 1531 WEST NINTH STREET LOS ANGELES 15, CALIFORNIA Dunkirk 8-8101 January 5, 1963 Dear Students: It is a source of great joy to the Catholic people of the Archdiocese to see the maturing of Pomona Catholic Boys ' High School, as it produces its first graduating class. The sac- rifices of the people in contributing to its purchase and improve- ment are now about to reap a harvest. It is also a great comfort to the Fathers of the Sacred Hearts and their Principal, Father Furey, to find an accomplish- ment of this kind as a reward to their dedication. The purpose of the entire effort is to produce young men who are sound in soul and mind and body, and who will live better Catholic lives as a result of their training here. May such be the glorious accomplishment of its first graduates. Very sincerely yours, Rt. Rev. Joseph F ' . Sharpe Superintendent of Schools High Schools and Colleges he rji : .W «««rs PS6K «?flt£«at:1 3 - Very Rev. Frederick Furey, SS. CC. 10 ARCHDIOCESE OF LOS ANGELES 1531 WEST NINTH STREET LOS ANGELES 15, CALIFORNIA Dunkirk 8-8101 Dear Graduates: It has been your high privilege to be known as the pioneer class of Pomona Catholic Boys ' High School. In this capacity many responsibilities have been thrust upon your young shoulders You gladly seized them with youthful zeal and carried them well. Others who follow will profit by the traditions which you helped to establish. You will always hold a unique place in the affections of those who have served on the faculty. New vistas of activity have been opened up for you and all Catholics by the recent directives of Pope John XXIU. The laity will be called upon to shoulder a greater responsibility and share in an ever expanding degree in Catholic action. It is the dedicated aim of our holoistic theory of educa- tion to prepare the young men who graduate from these hallowed halls of learning to assume their rightful role in these new and challenging frontiers. It Is our fond desire that the graduate of our school will be a young man with a great love of God and neighbor. He will have to be brave to live up to the ideals set before him. During your years in school you have been given every opportunity and encouragement to acquire a sincere love of learning. The tools of education with which you can build a promising future have been freely given you. A weU-rounded course of physical education to help build up your body, has been offered. As the Greeks put it so well, A sound mind in a sound body . The secondary school years are vitally important. During this short time a young lad becomes a man. It is hard to over estimate the importance of your training during these tempestuous years. It has been our intention to guide and help our students while encouraging them at the same time to be independent and resourceful. More and more your decisions must become your own. We must always be available to assist in an advisory capacity, but must leave you mature naturally. In this way you will be preparing yourselves for the day when you must inevitably become masters of your own destiny . While we have used all educational aids to help us in this herculean task, we have trusted more in God ' s grace and guidance to help us to succeed in so noble an endeavor. We have worked as though all depended on our efforts, and prayed as though all depended on God. Though we hope you wiU go on to scale great heights we will always remind you of the words of Our Blessed Lord, What doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his im- mortal soul . The per- son selected Is held high in the mind of each and every student and deserving of the highest grati- tude and admiration. It is only proper then, that we, the students of Pomona Catholic Boys ' High dedicate our first annual to the one personality who has been first and foremost in the guidance and development of our school. That person is none other than our principal, the Very Reverend Fred- erick Furey. In the gray beginnings Father Furey was given a handful of condemned buildings, a strict budget, and the Cardinal ' s blessing to create in a few short months a working, efficient establishment of edu- cation. To many this would have been an insurmountable task, but for Father Furey and his undying enthusiasm this was a challenge. He immediately instituted a building program and a plan of action which he hoped would eventually lead to a well equipped educational plant which would prepare the citiziens of tomorrow . The challenge of building men from boys wasn ' t an easy one and it presented many obstacles, but for Father Furey, who gave so generously and unselfishly of his time and effort, each difficulty was met and surmounted. Today, as our first graduation approaches. Father Furey ' s dream is becoming a reality and it is at this time that we salute him for a job well done and a challenge well met. 44 A A I The Fate of Empires Rests on the Education of Youth ...Aristotle 46 47 « « . ■s tt. This year ' s team was coached by Fr. Peter Dennis and got a lot of help also from other priests on the faculty. Last year ' s team had only one game but fared well in holding touted Salesian High to only a 2-1 victory. This year ' s team suffered defeats at the hands, or rather the feet, of the San Gabriel Mission High squad. The first game was held on the victors field and they could not hold them due to the lack of practice. The next meeting of the two schools took place on the home field and this time they did exceptionally well in hold- ing them to a 3-1 win. This year ' s squad possessed only six seniors, Redmond Johnston, Bill Motya, Bill McCay, Jim DuBran- sky, John Beereboom and Pat Gillespie. Next year ' s team should fare better than the previous two. They are looking forward to participation in a league and with a couple more years on the field should be able to send a fine team to represent us. n Varsity Wrestling 1st row: Jukubiak, Madrid, Acosta, Ehler, Pike. 2nd row: Walliser, R. SPARTAN WRESTLING SEASON 1962-63 Wrestling, a new sport on the Spartan campus seems to have a bright future if the turnout and spirit of the team continues as it has the past two seasons. The boys traveled around to vari- ous schools and met other wrestling squads. They had a very fine season with a 7-4 record, com- pared to a 5-4 last season. This sport enables the participants to not only maintain almost per- fect physical condition but to learn how to take care of themselves, in style.
