THE PRAYER A black man stands alone to sing, Before the crowd assembled there. His voice rang clear throughout the room, The song he choose, The Lord's Prayer. It's strange how thoughts can rush through time, Years and centuries, just melt away. My mind could see a hillside bare, Where a lone disciple stopped to pray. He stood alone, alone with God, There in the hills through which He walked. A simple prayer . . . So great in Faith, The well known prayer that Jesus taught. Our Father Who are in Heaven, Hallowed By Thy name, Thy kingdom come, He longed to see the church's words, Spread over the earth, Thy will be done. I thought we who have seen the day, When Christ is preached throughout our land. We do not yield ourselves . . . as He, To carry out God's plan for man. Give us this day, Our daily bread. In shame, I though, We're blind indeed. He prays for bread just for this day, In our abundance, we feel no need. How often do we ask for food? When we Give Thanks what do we say? We . . . who have never felt such need, Have not known hunger, How do we pray? Lead us not in the tempter's way, Deliver us . . . from evil . . . Then I thought, Man really wants to be, Free from wrong, from self, from sin. Deep within the human heart, There is a spark that bids us be. More like our Maker: In times of old Or times like now, Lord set us freeg Thine is the kingdom, The power, and The Glory, fLord these words were felt! I hoped that someone in that room Would feel the awe, I felt myself.J For ever and ever, unmeasured time, From the beginning . . . until the end, Man cannot change alone the wrong, The wrong to right, to undo sin. The power and glory is God's alone, The singer quietly, bowed his head, QSurely in Heaven Angels sangj in a humble voice AMEN he said. fThe above was inspired by Andre Ball who sang the Lord's Prayer at graduationj Ethel Watson, L. P. N. Mother of Billie Creed Graduate 1975
