The struggle was rough, but we came through with an enrollment of twelve. Roy Stills moved to Hanson. Sue Bandy was chosen by the Seniors and Faculty as the Good Citizen for 1950-'51. She was chosen by the basketball boys as one of the Cheerleaders. Raymond Martin, one of our members, was chosen as an outstanding first team player. B. Ashley, Wayne Jones, and myself, Dorothy Neisz (now Mrs. Carner). Our sponsor is Mrs. Corine Utterback By- Dorothy (Neisz) Carner 10 Last Will and Testament KNOW ALL BY THESE PRESENTS: DALTON HIGH SCHOOL, of the City of Dalton and County of Hopkins, State of Kentucky, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, and not acting under fraud, duress, menace, or the influence of any person whatsoever, do make, publish, and declare this our last will and testament, of the Senior Class of 1951, in the manner following, that is to say: Anna Lois Hart wills her stubborn ways to Barbara Ethridge. Francis Adkins wills her quiet ways to Faye Riley. Sue Bandy wills her nice figure to Joyce Wright. Raymond Martin wills his ability to make the all tournament to Rudie Ratliff. Edwin Jenkins wills his short stature to Don Hubbard. Wayne Jones wills his ability to make A’s to James Curtright. Ramon Parrish wills his big feet to Junior Cullen. Dorothy Hardwick wills her red hair to Ann Prow. Dot (Neisz) Carner wills her ability to catch a man to Betty Thompson. James Harris wills his good behavior in study hall to Odis Walker. And I, Raymond Lee Edmiston will my nickname (“Jughaid”) to Kenneth Lacy. IN WITNESS, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this ninth day of February, A.D., 1951. 11 Raymond Lee Edmiston (Seal) Prophecy Chicago, Illinois May 28, 1961 Dear Diary, It has been eleven months since I made my last entry in my diary. Since then I have made a trip to Chicago to nurse my sick aunt, as I am the only first class nurse in my family. When I got on the plane I was very much surprised to see that the pilot was Dalton's own Wayne Jones. He told me he had been in a contest, which proved him to be the fastest flier in the world. I was very pleased to get a letter from one of my classmates, the former Sue Bandy, asking me to visit her while I was there. I did, and it seems she and Ramon Burnett are doing fine. They own the largest hotel in Chicago. When I arrived in Madisonville, they informed me of an Alumni Banquet being held at Dalton. I attended the banquet and got to see Anna Lois Hart, she is still riding around in that certain five passenger coupe. Another one of my classmates I saw was James Harris, he and Betty are married. They live in Dalton. James told me Raymond Martin was playing basketball for the Philadelphia Warriors. I saw Dot Neisz. She is now married and living at Providence on Baptist Hill. Dot told me Francis Adkins could not attend the banquet. She finally got that blond headed guy from Kirkwood Springs, and is busy taking care of those darling children of hers. Dot also told me H. B. Ashley was living in Evansville and owns three department stores. I saw Raymond Edmiston. He is doing fine. He is married, has a large bank account, and three children. By- Dorothy Hardwick 12 Grumbler Oh me, I got tired of this old school, this pitiful, pitiful old school. There is something wrong with everything in this school. In the first place I don’t see why we had to change buildings. The old place was so cold that we couldn’t have lessons and the new building is so cozy we haven’t any excuse, so we had to study some at least. The next thing is the teachers. They’ve all been in college and come away supposedly educated, but we still have to answer the questions they don’t know. Imagine Mr. Richard's not letting us write our names on the clean white walls. Mrs. Utterback wouldn’t let us come out of the study hall once we'd been in. Mrs. Wyatt got the biggest old frown on her face if we don’t sit hunched over the old typewriter, beating our brains out, all period. Mr. Dever is quite a character, in history he talked like he knew George Washington and all the other big bugs of early history, he is either older than I think he is or a nitwit. Those cooks would be nice if they would cook. For instance they bake the ice cream and serve the old potaties and beans cold. That’s how everything j;oes too. I don't know whether they’re crazy or not, but here is what I hear them say about tea, you boil it to make it hot, put ice in it to make it cold; sugar it to make it sweet and lemon in it to make it sour. See what I mean. By- Sue Bandy 13 We’re Leaving Nozv One bright autumn day When the leaves were turning brown The present day Seniors were Dalton bound But we’re leaving now. We’ve gone four years To the school of our heart It’s going to be hard for us to part But we’re leaving now. We’re proud of Dalton Hi We’re proud in every way Our pride is too many words to say So we’re leaving now. We’ve gone through Dalton Hi We graduate in May So now we’ll say good-bye to our dismay We’re leaving now. DOCKREY Junior Activities October 31, the Juniors gave a Halloween Carnival. There were all kinds of entertainment, even three real live witches! American History was a very sleepy session the next day. We are proud that our dreamboy, the dashing tall blond center of our basketball team is none other than James (Roud) Curtright of the Junior Class. Roud is so good in his books that the teachers have to stay up nights to keep ahead of him. We’re also proud of La Pradd and Grable on the first team and some of the rest in class who have helped win these second team games. We take off our hats to Ruth Brown and Janette Herron who are two of the cheerleaders this year. This makes their second year. Hardy Utley was selected manager of our basketball team. He sure does take his time building fires, wonder if it could be because it's between geometry and health. We were lucky to get Mr. Richards, our principal, for a sponsor. He has been an inspiration to all of us to try to do better in the future. We’re all looking forward to that big trip at the close of school. The Junior Class of ’50-’51 had their first class meeting September 12, with an enrollment of twenty-two. We elected officers as follows: President-------- Vice-President--- Secretary-------- Sergeant-at-Arms Class Colors----- Class Flower----- Motto------------ Frank La Pradd James Curtright Kenneth Lacy David Grable Green and Gray Carnation “This Far, And Still Climbing.’’ William Ethridge and Huston Wyatt dropped out leaving an enrollment of twenty. The Juniors presented a three-act mystery play, entitled “Who Killed Aunt Caroline?” on December 19. 18 Freshmen Sophomores 19 High School Freshman Class W anneta Hankins Marvin Perkins Ruby Perkins Maurice Wyatt Barbara Crockett Hubert Morgan Delores Peyton Owen Gibbons Doris Hendrix Kenneth Wier Betty Thompson Wayne Gibbons Madine Hoskins Herman Hoskins Yvonne Reid Lenard Rawlins Jeff Cook Wayne Cartwright Edward Johnston, Austin Johnston, Joann Felker and Delano Creasy, (not pictured) Sophomore Class June Clark Hazel Traylor Joyce Clark Norman Johnson Virginia Coffman William Kennedy Dorcas Buchanan Don Hubbard Shirley Jones Odis Walker Betty Barnett Junior Cullen David Utley 20 Sophomores Mr. Dever sponsors the Sophomore Class. Refreshments were served and games were played. The following boys play on our Tiger Team. Don Hubbard William Kennedy Norman Johnson David Utley We are working hard and looking forward to next year when we will be Jolly Juniors and will get our rings. Even if we are a little on the silly side we are very easy to get along with. We also like to make new friends. Class Editor Betty Barnett 21 Freshmen The Freshman Class for the 1950-’51 term, enrolled with twenty- eight students, seven dropping out in the first half, leaving us with twenty-one. We are especially proud of Edward Johnston, who is a member of the Dalton basketball team. Edward, who is six foot and every inch of him, is rather shy with girls. He is a regular “Lil Abner.” It is said that Ed can run faster with a girl after him,-than he can when he's heading for the creek on a hot summer day, and brother that has to be fasti The Freshman Class has been rather busy, after electing Mrs. Prow our sponsor. Mrs. Prow is a very intelligent woman, and thoroughly understands boys and girls. We had a picnic last autumn and went to the Dawson State Park. We also had a hay ride along about that time, and had a swell time. After postponing the trip due to unfavorable highways and reserving tickets twice, the Freshman Class finally got to the Grand Ole’ Opery. It was the biggest event for us since the term began. We elected Owen Gibbons as our class President with Wayne Cartwright as our Vice-President; Betty Thompson was elected Secre- tary-Treasurer; Betty is also Secretary of the Dalton 4-H Club. 22 - Grades V- VI Grades VII -VIII 23 Grades V VI Sponsor----------------- Archie Pearl Alfred Ruth Ann Coffman Thomas Ray Cullen Earl Wayne Curtright Wanda Rose Dockrey Lomelda Franklin Fay Gentry Gay Gentry Evelyn Gentry Waldron Grimes Freda Mae Hankins Jimmy Owen Hatfield Darrell Jackson Melba Johnston Linda Jane Kirkwood Dorothy Jane Martin Archie Martin Dorros Jean Morse Villet Poe Gloria Jean Ross Kathleen Rawlins Carrol Sisk Morma Jean Towe Leora Alice Utley Benjamin Douglas Utley Wilma Joyce Vickrey Mrs. Cleora Givens Kenneth Wood Norman Lee Wyatt Morris Glenn Wyatt James Edward Wyatt Shelby Starks Edverd Alexander Clifton Crockett Hewlett Marlin Curry Ray Duncan Margaret Joyce Gentry Aretta Hankins Hilda Jean Harris Bonnie Irene Hart Joy Howton Glenda Fay Ipock Judith Carolyn Lovan Glendon Martin June Esther Morse Billy Peyton Frances Shelton Kenneth Wayne Tirey Norma Jean Wilson Shelby Wyatt Jinnie Dockery Floyd Brown William Earl Ipock Grades VII VIII Sponsor--------- Richard Cook Guy Gibbons Jerry Lovin Mangrum Franklin Kenneth Morgan Bobby Peyton Joe Gentry Henery Brynt Billy J. The Dalton team lost the next four games to Charleston, Nebo, Dawson Springs, and Graham, and then won the last scheduled game before Christmas from Crofton in an overtime period 50-49. In the annual Hopkins County Tournament held at Nebo, Dalton won over Charleston in the first round 60-49. The second night of the tourna- ment Dalton won over host Nebo 50-46, this victory gave them a chance at the Championship trophy. Dalton lost the final game of the tournament to Mortons Gap 50-49. Raymond Martin and James Curtright were select- ed for the all tournament team. Our gym burned on January 16, leaving us sad and desperate. We were supposed to have a game with Nebo that night and because of this all of our equipment was brought and left in the dressing room. Most of the boys suffered a big loss, some losing as much as ten dollars worth of shoes (two pairs, and nearly all the suits). The boys decided to continue, so enough new suits were bought to dress the team and Charleston donated enough shoes to outfit the boys again. We have to go here, yonder and everywhere to get to practice but will make it somehow and come out on top. Dalton has eight games left for the last semester anH the team should be at its peak and ready for the District tournament, February 27.
