In our Junior year we had a total of twelve for our class, Agnes Buchanan got married, Delores Cunningham, Dorthy Jones, Alta Cain, and Jimmie Utterback didn’t return to school and Billy Williams joined the army. The ones who remained were, Jean Ausenbaugh, Ernie Ratliff, Ann Hubbard, Lucille Utley, Annie Mae Ramsey, Lois Riley, Harold Kirkwood, Melvin Averitt, George Downing, Ernest Holmes, and Douglas Cullen. Roy Thompson entered from Madisonville, Kentucky. Our sponso»- was Mrs. Esmer Wyatt. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY We the Senior Class of '49 upon entering high school four years ago, were given the privilege to select some of our courses. We could study such elective courses as typing, agriculture, and shorthand. We could also play basketball, baseba.il, and tennis. We could act in or help with plays and we were taught to be good sports, especially the art of being a good loser as well as a good winner. In our first year of high we had an enrollment of seventeen. They were Jean Ausenbaugh, Lois Riley, Annie Mae Ramsey, Dorothy Jones, Lucille Utley, Ann Hubbard, Agnes Buchanan, Juanita Spence, Mary Lyons, Alta Cain, Ernest Holmes, Harold Kirkwood, Melvin and Eddie Averitt, Douglas Cullen, Curtis Perry and Guyman Bridgeman. Then midterm came with two more entering, Ernie Ratliff from Richland, Louise Kennedy from Kirkwood Springs. Curtis Perry dropped out at midterm which left an enrollment of eighteen for the new term. Our Sponsor was Mr. Arnold Hicks. Again we started our class with an enrollment of seventeen. Eddie Averitt didn’t return to school and Guyman Bridgeman remained as a freshman, Juanita Spence and Mary Lyons entered Charleston High as sophomores that year. Billy Williams, George Downing, Jimmie Utterback and Delores Cunningham entered the sophomore class with the following members: Alta Cain, Lois Riley, Dorthy Jones, Annie Mae Ramsey, Lucille Utley, Agnes Buchanan, Ann Hubbard, Ernie Ratliff, Jean Ausenbaugh, Melvin Averitt, Ernest Holmes, Harold Kirkwood, and Douglas Cullen. Miss Cressa Peyton was our sponsor for six weeks and she quit and got married. Mrs. Beryl Hubbard took her place. CLASS PROPHECY San Francisco, California May 5, 1959 Dear Diary, It has been ten months since I made my last entry in my diary. Since then I have made a trip to the East as reporter for the newspaper, California Sun. I was pleased to receive a letter from one of my schoolmates, Ernie Ratliff, just before I left on my trip asking me to stop on the way east and visit her ranch. I did and I was very pleased with my visit. When I got on the plane in Arizona, to continue my trip, I was very surprised that the pilot was Dalton’s own Douglas Cullen. Douglas has gone far and he tells me he is soon to fly around the world. While listening to the radio on the plane, imagine my delight when I heard Ernest Holmes’ voice announcing commercials. When I arrived at the airport in Madisonville, I decided to look around and see how much the city had changed in the last 10 years. Walking into the largest department store in the city I collided with a distinguished looking individual with a cigar who I soon recognized as Roy Thompson. He informed me he owned the store and proudly showed me all sixteen stores of his merchandise. While in Madisonville, I went down to the Modern Beauty Salon and was surprised to see its owners were Jean Ausenbaugh and Lois Riley. While I was there, they informed me of an Alumni Banquet being held at Dalton. I attended the banquet and got to see Mickey Neisz who is now a school teacher at Dalton. Mickey is teaching three of Ann Hubbard’s children which are in school there. Ann Hubbard is married and has a faithful Dalton man, a lovely home, and children. Another one of my schoolmates I got to see was none other than Lucille Utley, Lucille is now a nurse at the Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. While in Madisonville, I visited a friend one evening and we settled down in the living room to see a ball game on her television set. To my surprise there at Madison Square Garden, was George Downing playing basketball for the Philadelphia Warriors. George is doing a great job in his career and that particular night he was high point man. By- Annie Mae Ramsey 13
