We could study such elective courses as typing, agriculture, and shorthand. We could also play basketball, baseba.il, and tennis. We could act in or help with plays and we were taught to be good sports, especially the art of being a good loser as well as a good winner. Since then I have made a trip to the East as reporter for the newspaper, California Sun. I was pleased to receive a letter from one of my schoolmates, Ernie Ratliff, just before I left on my trip asking me to stop on the way east and visit her ranch. I did and I was very pleased with my visit. When I got on the plane in Arizona, to continue my trip, I was very surprised that the pilot was Dalton’s own Douglas Cullen. Douglas has gone far and he tells me he is soon to fly around the world. While listening to the radio on the plane, imagine my delight when I heard Ernest Holmes’ voice announcing commercials. When I arrived at the airport in Madisonville, I decided to look around and see how much the city had changed in the last 10 years. Walking into the largest department store in the city I collided with a distinguished looking individual with a cigar who I soon recognized as Roy Thompson. He informed me he owned the store and proudly showed me all sixteen stores of his merchandise. While in Madisonville, I went down to the Modern Beauty Salon and was surprised to see its owners were Jean Ausenbaugh and Lois Riley. While I was there, they informed me of an Alumni Banquet being held at Dalton. I attended the banquet and got to see Mickey Neisz who is now a school teacher at Dalton. Mickey is teaching three of Ann Hubbard’s children which are in school there. Ann Hubbard is married and has a faithful Dalton man, a lovely home, and children. Another one of my schoolmates I got to see was none other than Lucille Utley, Lucille is now a nurse at the Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. While in Madisonville, I visited a friend one evening and we settled down in the living room to see a ball game on her television set. To my surprise there at Madison Square Garden, was George Downing playing basketball for the Philadelphia Warriors. George is doing a great job in his career and that particular night he was high point man. By- Annie Mae Ramsey 13 CLASS POEM To this old school We have to say goodbye. We are very sorry To leave old Dalton High. To this dear old school That we will never forget. We love the dear old place And the classmates we have met. We have enjoyed All the years that passed. But we are also glad That this is our last. We leave this school To all future classes. We wish best of luck” To other lads and lasses. By- Lucille Utley 14 THE GRUMBLER I don’t see why they chose me for a grumbler. I never grumble, but what’s the use of talking? Nothing is ever done right around here anymore. Of course, anyone knows they could have gotten better teachers for Dalton this year. Take that Coach Thornton Dever for instance. That horrible person made us run five laps around the gym one way, and to top that, he made us turn around and run five the other way. Now I ask you, isn’t that awful? That Corine Utterback! She’s another character. Do you realize she made us memorize about half of our literature book. It’s all unnecessary, don’t you think? That principal A. O. Richards! He surely is a pain in the neck. He won't even let us chew gum in time books, and another thing, he makes us get at least two problems every day before class or in class. He sure is hard on us. Esmer Wyatt, our typing teacher, won't even let us have one little old mistake on our typing. That’s getting to be awful. Oh! Lord! That Jewell W. Logan. He won’t even let us skip his class and go to the store. I think he has forgotten he was young once. Those cooks we have! They are awful too. They won’t even let us have more than two servings of food. The Senior Class this time surely is dumb. Well, don’t you know Ann Hubbard actually made an A-. Isn’t that terrible? Janitors! Did you ever in your life see such lazy people? They won’t even sweep the floor more than once every day. And to beat it all the bus drivers won’t let us carve our initials on the sides of the buses. If we don’t do this how will people remember us ? By- George Downing 15 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS: DALTON HIGH SCHOOL, of the City of Dalton and County of Hopkins, State of Kentucky, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, and not acting under fraud, duress, menace, or the influence of any person whatsoever, do make, publish, and de- clare this my last Will and Testament, of the Senior Class of 1949, in the manner, following, that is to say: Annie Mae Ramsey wills her giggles to Francis Adkins. Nancy Brown was placed third in the county and first at Dalton. She received a $5.00 prize and a blue ribbon. Lois Riley and Reed Peyton tied for second at Dalton and each received a red ribbon. Randle Riley and Mickey Neisz tied for third and each received a white ribbon. One of the members of the Dalton 4-H Club, J. D. Franklin, won a trip to Richmond, Virginia, by writing a theme on “What I Have Done In The 4-H Club.” He is a member of the Junior Class. The 4-H Club of Dalton sponsored a radio program December 17, with several of the members taking part. The fourth grade from Mrs. Rea’s room and the fifth and sixth grades from Mrs. Givens’ room sang Christmas Carols. On January 26th, the Junior High Students entertained the members of the P.T.A. with an interesting spelling match. Vivian Childress, an eighth grade student, won. We have one new typewriter of which we are very proud and have all the old ones repaired. The lunch room is serving very good lunches this year. They have bought a new radio and also many other things for the advantage of the students. After the annual was printed last year the alumni of Dalton High School held a banquet with a large number attending. Another banquet has been planned for this year. It is hoped there will be as many or more here this year than last. Our school system has something new this year. We have a grade supervisor who helps our grade teachers give the children the correct training. We also have a music supervisor for the grade children. We are very proud of our new faculty member this year, Mr. Jewell Wyatt Logan. We are anticipating with great pleasure that new school building we have been prom- ised this coming year. 26 balton i Prettiest QirU Senior 27 SENIOR ACTIVITIES The Seniors planned for their first activity an ice cream supper, which was September 10, 1948. It was a big success and everyone enjoyed themselves. Next we began working on our play “Aunt Susie Shoots The Works,” a mystery comedy presented in three acts. The characters were as follows: Aunt Susie Stowe Scarlet Deane Laura Dawson Madame Zola Portia Lark Omar Graves LaSalle Johnson Slick Conway- - -- -- -- -- - Aunt Susie, an old maid, who hated all men intensely was played by Annie Mae Ramsey. The proper romantic ending was supplied when Roy Thompson, a dignified bachelor, who be- fore he met her was convinced that the woman’s place was in somebody else's home, per- suaded her men were not so bad after all. JUNIOR ACTIVITIES An enjoyable party was held in the Dalton Gym on January 20th, in honor of the Junior Class and their chaperone, Jewell Logan. C. B. Utley, Jr. was initiated for president of 1948- 49. There were three Juniors absent, Katherine Weir, Buddie Hale, and Randle Riley. ATHLETICS DALTON’S BASKETBALL TEAM The Dalton Tigers this year have turned out to be better in their teamwork than last year. They have grown quite a bit in height during the summer vacation. They have not been the strongest in the county but always willing to take their defeats with a smile. George Downing has come in with those “Hot Shot” Downing baskets and pulled Dalton through many games. He is a Senior and is 18 years old, 5’ 8” tall. George is captain of our team and was chosen on the all tournament team at an invitational tour- nament at Charleston and received a gold basketball. He has played 3 years on the first team. Douglas Cullen, although he has been in bad health the first few games, has pulled through and came back to push Dalton through to many a victory. He is 18 years old, 5’ 10„” and was also chosen on the all tournament team at Charleston and received a gold basketball. He is graduating this year and will be greatly missed. Junior Utley is pretty good on long shots if he gets just that right Utley swing on it. He is a junior and is 16 years old, 5’ ll}” tall. He’ll be back next year and we hope he makes good. When Roy Thompson, “Big Foot Thompson” as he is called, gets in there to jump center he can get up in the air. He also is good on intercepting passes. He is 16 years old, and 6’ tall. He is leaving this year, we are sure his height and performance will be missed. Jerry Herron, a hard working player, will long be remembered for those beautiful left handed long shots. He is 16 years old, 6’ ?” and is a junior. He will be back next year. We are counting on you, Jerry. Raymond Martin came up from second team to make a big hit with people for his good teamwork and his fast peppy work where pep was needed. He is 15 years old and 5’ 8” tall. He is a sophomore this year. In the years to come we hope to see him become a real star. James Curtwright is Dalton’s danger signal. When the other teams want to play rough, he is always ready to take it and deal it out in return. He is 15 years old, 6’ tall, and a Freshman. Franklin LaPradd is a good player and a teamman. This is his first year to make the team and-we are proud of him. He is 16 years old and 6’ tall. He also is a Freshman. We proudly salute Thornton Dever, the coach of Dalton Tigers, for his excellent training knowledge which he has managed to convey to the boys. He has paved the way for several victories this year. k 34 Jbalton Z)ig,er£ ZJeam GEORGE DOWNING Captain Forward DOUGLAS CULLEN Co-Captain Forward ROY THOMPSON Center JERRY HERRON Guard THORNTON DEVERS Coach CLOYD B. And then again?” “Eighths.” Correct. Again?” “Sixteenths.” “Exactly. And then?” “Thirty seconds.” “And once more?” “Hamburger! cried George impatiently. Mr. Dever, who had watched his team go down in defeat, stopped the referee as he was leaving the gym. “Where’s your dog?” he commanded. “Dog?” ejaculated the referee. “I have no dog.” Well, said Mr. Dever, “your’re the first blind man I ever saw who didn’t have dog.” “Has that florist any children?” “Two-a girl who is a budding genius and a son who is a blooming idiot.” Mr. Logan: “What is ignorance, Douglas?” Douglas: “Ignorance is when you don’t know anything and somebody finds it out.” Mrs. Wyatt (pointing to a deer in a picture): “Now, Johnny, tell me what that animal is.” Johnny: “I don’t know, teacher.” Mrs. Wyatt: “What does your mother call your father?” Johnny: “Is a beetle that big?
