Women were still fighting for the cause of the ERA, as ratification had reached a standstill. Homosexuals began to seek rights too, and Anita Bryant became a controversial figure. The Panama Canal was a major issue and President Car- ter's proposal of turning the canal over to the Panamanians was finally accepted by Congress, with a few changes. President Carter also had to deal with Brother Billy and his money-making efforts, such as Billy Beer. The basic conflict between employees and employers was exemplified in the major strike of the coal-miners against their employers. The problems were finally resolved, but only after weeks of un- employment, hunger, and violence. Another strike had been instigated earlier in the year by farmers pro- testing the high prices of growing food and the sub- sequent lack of profit. Star Wars and Saturday Night Fever became legendary cults, and John Travolta was propelled into super-stardom. Oh, God! presented a new view of religion. We lost many famous people this year, in- cluding Hubert Humphrey and Bing Crosby. But the death of Elvis affected millions. Rock and roll had lost the King; it would never be the same. The local Whit- field County Junior Miss Pageant was another impor- tant activity of the year. One of our own, Marla Martin, won the title and the Scholastic Award. She then went to the State where she won 3rd Runner-up and the Scholastic Award. This year we had dances after the home football games — the Fifth Quarter discos sponsored by the Pep Club. Then in the spring, an anonymous donor gave the entire school a Coke Day, with doughnuts! It was quite a year!
