THE NEW COMPREHENSIVE DALTON HIGH SCHOOL and the phrase “an impossible dream” are synonymous, for the idea of a new school has been in the minds of the students of Dalton High and citizens of Dalton, Georgia for many years. When the dream first began, no one really knows. As the years passed and the old building became more and more inadequate for our needs, many concerned citizens became an active force in the dream as it weaved its way into reality. Planning committees were formed. Through many hours of hard work, these committees conceived the perfect design that, if ever completed, would be far superior to any public high school anywhere. When the plans were eventually released, the people of Dalton were amazed at what they saw. They were enthusiastic and overwhelmingly voted for a referendum to increase taxes in order to finance the dream. Soon the construction crews applied their art and two years later the dream materialized. Through these two years the public wondered what would be created by these unlikely artists within the high walls which they had constructed. The tension began to mount when the announcement was made that books should be packed and teachers and students should prepare for a change in location. The excitement increased as the summer ended and the date for the public unveiling was announced. Curious crowds arrived to see what their increased taxes had financed. As they entered the structure, they were amazed when they realized they had helped to build a high school which compared favorably with a modern college campus. Students, teachers, parents, and patrons felt a deep sense of pride as they toured the spacious educational complex which each helped create when he became a part of that long-ago Impossible dream. 3
