Inside our school we felt totally isolated from the world. It was different from being downtown with the sounds of traffic and the crowd- ed intersections; it was peaceful. But as the year progressed, our school became more like home. We grew accustomed to the many changes in schedules such as an earlier school hour, no morning break, only four minutes between classes, and having three lunch shifts. We even learned to accept classrooms with no windows and bathrooms with no doors. Students riding buses became adjusted to their early arrival and early depar- ture. Groups began to gather around the ramp for socialization and, all things accepted, the 1977 school year in our new building was underway. New classes, such as the Trade and Industry Courses, opened opportunities to us never offered before. We learned how to repair cars, lay brick, do sheet metal work, graphic arts, and build a house. Another interesting new class was the Child Development Course where the children actually came to the school and we worked with them in a specially designed classroom. The beautiful new na- tatorium was another major attrac- tion among students. Such classes as beginning and advanced swim- ming, water polo, and water basket- ball were taught. Having three gymnasiums also opened many activities to us. Wrestling became a favorite class, as did gymnastics. We found ourselves in the spacious main gym for assemblies, pep ses- sions, and a variety of other activi- ties. Much can be said about the new Dalton High School and about all the modern facilities which en- courages each student to broaden his experience and knowledge. However, one of the most important parts of DHS has not changed. The spirit of DHS, the people of DHS, have moved into a beautiful new building, but that spirit and those people will remain the same . . . always. 13
