Georgia H 2 THE NEW COMPREHENSIVE DALTON HIGH SCHOOL and the phrase “an impossible dream” are synonymous, for the idea of a new school has been in the minds of the students of Dalton High and citizens of Dalton, Georgia for many years. When the dream first began, no one really knows. As the years passed and the old building became more and more inadequate for our needs, many concerned citizens became an active force in the dream as it weaved its way into reality. Planning committees were formed. Through many hours of hard work, these committees conceived the perfect design that, if ever completed, would be far superior to any public high school anywhere. When the plans were eventually released, the people of Dalton were amazed at what they saw. They were enthusiastic and overwhelmingly voted for a referendum to increase taxes in order to finance the dream. Soon the construction crews applied their art and two years later the dream materialized. Through these two years the public wondered what would be created by these unlikely artists within the high walls which they had constructed. The tension began to mount when the announcement was made that books should be packed and teachers and students should prepare for a change in location. The excitement increased as the summer ended and the date for the public unveiling was announced. Curious crowds arrived to see what their increased taxes had financed. As they entered the structure, they were amazed when they realized they had helped to build a high school which compared favorably with a modern college campus. Students, teachers, parents, and patrons felt a deep sense of pride as they toured the spacious educational complex which each helped create when he became a part of that long-ago Impossible dream. 3 We, the students of the new Dalton High School, dedicate the 1977 Catamount to MR. THOMAS R. JONES Chairman, Dalton Board of Education With Special Acknowledgement To the citizens of Dalton who support education in our community, and To members of the school administration who have served many years in planning the new Dalton Comprehensive High School. Amid the uncertainity and apprehension, there was an unmis- takable sense of pride and humility as we looked upon these untread corridors. Everything had a new name. We were instructed to find our classes by going up the Ramp or down the Ramp and locating color coded areas. Though the ramp provided access to all parts of the building, we did discover stairwells which helped us move from one area to another of this five and one-third acre building. We ate lunch and attended dances and banquets in a spacious area called the Commons. We enjoyed choosing from four lunch menues and having a balcony in the Commons where a band could play. The School Store, located at one entrance to the Commons, became a favorite among the students who went by to purchase an after-lunch sweet or perhaps a composition book need- ed before his next class. In another area we discovered we no longer had an auditorium, but a five hundred seat Theatre with a beau- tiful red decor. To look up a book, read a magazine, or just relax for a while we no longer went to the library, but to the Media Center which featured a mezzanine where fiction books were located. At first we were apprehensive as we searched for the library, the cafeter- ia, and our classes in the color coded areas. Even the seniors were uncertain where to go or how to get there. However, it did not take long for us to adapt to the new names and find our way from class to class. 9 Top Left: Charles Bryant looks over a report. It was different from being downtown with the sounds of traffic and the crowd- ed intersections; it was peaceful. But as the year progressed, our school became more like home. We grew accustomed to the many changes in schedules such as an earlier school hour, no morning break, only four minutes between classes, and having three lunch shifts. We even learned to accept classrooms with no windows and bathrooms with no doors. Students riding buses became adjusted to their early arrival and early depar- ture. Groups began to gather around the ramp for socialization and, all things accepted, the 1977 school year in our new building was underway. New classes, such as the Trade and Industry Courses, opened opportunities to us never offered before. We learned how to repair cars, lay brick, do sheet metal work, graphic arts, and build a house. Another interesting new class was the Child Development Course where the children actually came to the school and we worked with them in a specially designed classroom. The beautiful new na- tatorium was another major attrac- tion among students. Such classes as beginning and advanced swim- ming, water polo, and water basket- ball were taught. Having three gymnasiums also opened many activities to us. Wrestling became a favorite class, as did gymnastics. We found ourselves in the spacious main gym for assemblies, pep ses- sions, and a variety of other activi- ties. Much can be said about the new Dalton High School and about all the modern facilities which en- courages each student to broaden his experience and knowledge. However, one of the most important parts of DHS has not changed. The spirit of DHS, the people of DHS, have moved into a beautiful new building, but that spirit and those people will remain the same . . . always. 13 Top Left: Reception for foreign exchange student, Mills Lang Top Center: Freshman and sophomores enjoying game. For some DHS means a chance to expand their knowledge by taking advantage of the faculty and student relationship that exists here. For others, it is the social activities-the club meetings, the games and the friends-that are special. But most everyone agrees that it is a mixture of these things that makes Dalton High unique. For nine months out of every year this building is our home. During these past nine months, there were many different activities that kept our lives busy and our time scarce. Every season had its own plans for student involvement. In the fall, along with excitement of Friday football games (not to mention the victory pizza with that special date afterwards) there was the endless preparation beforehand. Earlier in the week, the band spent hours practicing and perfecting each halftime show, the cheerleaders prepared for Pep Session, and the fans provided support always. Everyone was occupied with floats, and decorations for weeks ahead of time, getting ready for the big day. Of course the everyday things helped add to a busy calendar. Club meetings, assemblies, contests and play practice filled the days (and nights). Fortunately there were holidays to rest overcrowded schedules. When December the first rolled around, winter wasn’t far off. And winter brought new attractions. Basketball season began, with two or three games a week. The B-team and Varsity games of both sexes provided a way for students and other Catamount fans to get together and contribute toward victory. Added to this were other activities like swim meets, the Christmas chorus concert, and remember all those holidays because of Mother Nature and the gas shortage? 131 132 1. Diane Frank. Alien Posten. The spring musical- “The Pajama Game and its cast of thousands was a big hit with everyone, along with the dances. Spring wouldn’t be spring without Junior-Senior, and the Senior Party. Then seniors looked forward to graduation and Florida, while everyone else looked forward to vacation. The 1976-1977 school year was over, but there was still another September to anticipate.
