A KALIDESCOPE OF PEOPLE . . . Happy People, Working People, Smiling People, Funny People, Laughing People, Proud People . . . Making the year 1975 a year of Excitement, Adventure, and Accomplishment ... a year to be remembered 7 Blue jeans, overalls, Keds, and clogs . . . shags, and pony-tails . . . smiles, frowns, grimaces and grins are, the people of Dalton High. The excitement of beginning a brand new school year fills the halls. As we walk down famil- iar corridors, we greet classmates and renew old friendships which have lagged during the sum- mer. Most of us are returning to DHS for another year, but for some, high school is a new exper- ience. One can recognize these newcomers by the bewildered facial expressions which contrast with the nonchalant smiles of the upperclassmen. Seniors, enjoying their importance, take on the responsibilities of leadership. As the year gets underway we are caught up in the enthusiasm which characterizes every year at DHS. We anticipate a year full of club meeting, ballgames, plays and dances. Our schedules become more hectic each day but, of course, we still manageto study. Each morning we engage in the never-ending battle for parking places and race the tardy tone to homeroom. We tackle our studies, but eagerly await our next opportunity to socialize. However, lunch is the main event in our race against time, and those who go off campus frequen- tly set new records in the field of speed-eating. The day comes to a close for some with the sounding of the 3:28 tone, but it sends many to additional meetings and practices. To us this endless activity is DHS . . . and we are the proud, happy and busy people of DHS. 9 We, the students of Dalton High School, dedicate the 1975 Catamount to . . . Mr. Charles E. Depth and first game mistakes were evident factors in the loss. EAST ROME: The Catamounts suffered their second straight defeat at the hands of the East Rome G ladiators, 14-0. For the first time in years, Dalton dropped its first two games. LAFAYETTE: The Catamounts opened the 6-AA region slate with a resounding 33-0 victory over Lafayette. With spirits running high, both offense and defense sparkled. CHATTOOGA: In a heartbreaking 6-0 de- feat by Chattooga, Dalton's squads com- pletely dominated the game, but were un- able to score. However, brighter lights were obviously in the future. COOSA: Playing host to the Coosa Eagles, Dalton battled to a 14-14 stalemate. Still with only one victory, the Catamounts re- grouped for the upcoming game with Ringgold and a new start. RINGGOLD: The Catamounts, playing their most impressive game of the year, outclassed the host Ringgold Tigers, defeating them 27-6. Dalton dominated in every phase of the game, with the total statistics proving the point. LAKE VIEW: Playing before the 1954 Honor Class for this year's Homecoming, Dalton put on an impressive show, soundly defeating the Lakeview Warriors 2 7-0. This game showed the Catamount's best play of the year. CALHOUN: In its last region game, Dalton shut out the invading Yellow Jackets 21-0. This boosted Dalton's overall record to 4-3-1 and 4-1 in region play. WEST ROME: Traveling to meet the power- ful West Rome Chieftain, Dalton fell 14-7 in a hard hitting contest. With but one game left, Dalton regrouped for its season finale against the Baylor Red Raiders. BAYLOR: For the seniors it was their last game as a Catamount. For the team, the last of the season. As Dalton invaded Bay- lor's home field, little hope was in the hearts of many; except the Dalton Cata- mounts. Throwing away all inhibitions, the Catamounts played their most superb game of the year. Taking the fight to their side of the line, the offense scored 26 points while the defense held Baylor on many key places. It was the way to end a season. 44 BAYLOR I IQ 35 4 3 1. LAKEVIEW: The Warriorettes spoiled thoughts of an unde- feated season by beating the Kittymounts 52-39. The Cats picked up their third straight, easily rolling past Lakeview. MURRAY CO.: Facing the Indians was an easy win for the girls, but a more phy- sical game was seen as the Cats pulled out of a close victory defeating the host team 79-71. CHATTOOGA: Both the girls and boys emerged victorious in hard fought games against the visiting Chattooga squad. LAFAYETTE: A sixth victory was chalked up by the Cata- mounts as they swept past Lafayette by a score of 78-61. CALHOUN: Both squads showed much talent as a vic- tory was easily gained over the host Yellow Jackets. WESTSIDE CHRISTMAS TOURNEY: Both teams re- turned to the Christmas Tour- nament as solid favorites. The Kittymounts proved very powerful by defeating La- fayette 75-51, North Whit- field 55-47, and triumphed over Eastbrook in the finals 77-56. The Catamounts up- ended opponents Westside 118-50, Dade Co. 105- 52 and Lafayette, 86-58, to take the crown. EASTBROOK: A second tri- umph came for Catamounts and Kittymounts as well, over the visiting Mustangs. MURRAY CO.: A packed house of over 1,100 cheer- ing fans, watched the Kitty- mounts take their eighth vic- tory in nine outings. The Catamounts took control over the Indians and won number nine, 86-73. CASS: Powerful Cass stopped the Kittymounts by a margin of 71-55. The Catamounts paced to another big victory by the score of 75-67. LAKEVIEW: Revenge was taken as the Kittymounts put it to the visiting Warriorettes, 46-39. LAFAYETTE: Both Dalton squads turned back the visit- ing Ramblers for the third time of the season, easily winning both games. CALHOUN: Playing at the Omni proved no pressure for the strong Kittymounts. A much closer contest assisted the undefeated Cats, but they came out on top 69-59. WESTS IDE: A highly dream- ed of, undefeated season, came true as the boys de- feated the Rockets 109-48. Once again the Rockettes surprised the visiting Kitty- mounts, 73-69. REGION 6-AA TOURNA- MENTS: The Kittymounts proved true to the challenge, while being seated number one in Ringgold, powered past league foes North Whit- field and Ringgold, 46-31, and 55-38 respectively. The top seated Cats were not so fortunate as they were upset by powerful Chattooga 69- 68. Beginning on the first day of registration, August 28, and for many even before that at summer camos, our life at DHS for the next nine months began. Fall quarter was pretty much filled with all the excitement that goes along with football games. Many hours of practice were put in by the football team, the band, and the cheerleaders as they prepared for Pep Session, half-time activities, and the actual game itself. The student body played its part by supporting the team at Pep Session and by the large turn-outs at all the games. While these games were going on, the B-Team and Freshman football teams continued playing their schedule while the DHS Players were busy preparing for their fall production Inspector General. Homecoming, highlighted fall quarter and soon after first quarter exams, the basketball season began and continued until February 7. The Girls' Varsity team went on to State and placed third in the 6 AA State Basketball tournaments. The annual Sweetheart Dance began at 8:00 p.m. on February 18 with emcees Lou Ann Boozer and John Carson announcing all the class favorites from inside the beautiful white gazebo. The Players one-acts took place the next weekend followed by the band's Straw Hat Follies the next. And while we were busy with our own activities at DHS, the world around us continued to grow and change (picture 3). Our nation experienced a severe economic slump, while the unemployment rate reached a near all-time high. In August of 1974 Richard Nixon re- signed the Presidency and Gerald Ford assumed the leadership of our country, making the first time in American history that both the Presi- dent and Vice-President were appointed rather than being elected by a popular vote. New York City was on the verge of bankruptcy and the Equal Rights Amendment surfaced, to the delight of some and to the disapproval of others. In reference to World Affairs, the Communists of North Vietnam took over the country of South Vietnam, and thou- sands of Vietnamese orphans were sent to America for adoption. In our state of Georgia, George Busbee became the 82nd Governor upon his inauguration, which was photographed by DHS student photo- grapher Clark Smith (picture9). As spring approached, so came the I u£i) QUlSlWyS recession a®’ fg8! i w consbes •! « ! - many watches and warnings for tornadoes. Several tornadoes did touch down, but the ones doing the most damage in Georgia took place in Atlanta. Millions of dollars worth of damage was reported to property, including the Georgia Governor's Mansion (picture 7). In addition to all the current news of the world, many people right here at Dalton High were making the news as they were recognized for their accomplish- ments. Bill Weaver (picture 5) was named Counselor of the Year in the state of Georgia and Glenn Mas- ters (picture 2) was recognized as Coach of the Year in our region. Sally Gold (picture 8) was chosen as STAR teacher and Mr. Charles E. Bowen announced his retirement as Superintendent of the Dalton Public School System after 40 years in the teaching profession. Whit Joyner (picture 1) was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates and Sharon Allison (picture 6) received 2nd runner-up in the local Junior Miss Pag- eant. The famous Anthropologist Margaret Mead (picture 4) visited the campus of Dalton Junior College and many classes were able to attend her lecture on the World Food Crisis. So, the people of Dalton High continued their activities - ever conscious of world activities. 181 Third quarter began Tuesday, March 11, the last quarter of the year, and for the Seniors, their last quarter at Dalton High. This Spring quarter was perhaps the busiest of them all. The Jr.-Sr. Prom, Sen- ior party, and Guys and Dolls all took place during the last three months, along with all the clubs and committees, Anchor Club, Key Club, Y-Club, Hi-Light Staff, Annual Staff, and Sr. Activity Council busily finishing their projects. Many clubs had their end of the year banquets where they installed officers for the coming year. All the Spring sports - Baseball, Track, Softball, Tennis, and Golf - began and ended their busy schedules during third quarter. Honors Day highlighted the end of the year on May 22 with a two-hour assembly honoring various students for their accomplishments. The last exams of the year were June 4-6 and at 3:28 on June 6, school for the 1974-75 year was officially over. Graduation on June 11 marked the end of a four-year high school career for the seniors. However, we could never forget the people who created the atmosphere of spirited pride and unity that existed within our walls at DHS. 183 people • • •
