Forwell Studio Artwork: Del Mortin Publisher: Porogon Yearbooks Representative: Bill Moss The old year dies and we face the new year as though it were an entity, new as a new- M born babe. A new calendar with twelve M leaves, one for each month. Something M in us, some need for the specific, M the orderly, the mathematical M exactitude, calls for such a m demarcation. Yet any year, regardless of arbitrary time, m is like a circle; you can start m at any point upon it and, fol- I lowing the circle, you come I back to that point. Our year, our circle, happens I to be a cycle of the sea- I sons, planting, growing, reaping, resting; and thus it is a part of the earth, 1 the soil and the flowing 1 waters as well as of the stars 1 by which it is gauged. A No year stands by itself, anyA more than any day stands alone.A There is the continuity of all the A years in the trees, the grass, even A in the stones on the hilltops. Even in man. For time flows like water, erodingX and building, shaping and ever flowing; and time is a part of us, not only years, as we .speak of them, but our lives, our thoughts. All our yesterdays are summarized in X our now, and all the tomorrows are ours to shape. No year is complete. Even the % seasons into which we divide % the years overlap the arbitrary % markers. Winter ends one ■ year and begins the next, 1 and the growth of each 1 spring is from the root and I seed of the past. It is the I continuity that matters, the inevitability of tomorrow, I which gives meaning to the I numbers themselves. Ten or f a hundred has no meaning ■without the continuity of num- M bers behind it, other numbers M beyond. Tomorrow implies a now and a yesterday. And K year's end is neither an end nor M a beginning but a going on, with M all the wisdom that experience can M instill in us. It starts in the summer at Tennessee Tech where both B-Team and Var- sity squads attend a cheerleading clinic. Here, they learn new cheers, pom-pom rou- tines, and general tech- niques of cheerleading. Another big part is com- peting for ribbons. This past year the varsity came home with four su- perior ribbons and the spirit stick. The B-Team came back with two su- perior ribbons and two excellent ribbons. Immediately after the school year starts the cheerleaders are busy with pep sessions and leading cheers at foot- ball games. Along with the pep club, they help provide the teams with refreshments. Cheer- leaders also decorate players homes and make signs for the school and gym. When Spring comes the Senior Cheerleaders conduct a two week clinic for girls interested in trying out for cheer- leading. Any girl in the Freshman class is eli- gible to try-out for B- Team. Sophomore and Junior girls are eligible to try-out for the Varsity squad. Judges select the cheerleaders for the fol- lowing year from these girls. 26 VARSITY Mary Beth Wells; Captain Anne Chance; Co- Captain Mary Julian Lumpkin Thera Jones Debbi Jordan Kim Pierce Debby Lake Jo Heller Susan Highsmith Mimi Moore Rhonda Longley B-TEAM Shane Quarles; Captain Anne Griggs Delyn Ritchey Sandra Roberts Nancy Coffey 27 vi-J fs '■ It seems such a long time ago that we were small carefree chil- dren, playing our simple games, singing our childish songs and dancing in circles. As the years went by and we grew older, the circles blended together becom- ing a complicated spiral as we developed our talents and ac- quired new knowledge and skills. We should not forget though, that it was our innocent curiosity which transformed those simple games into scientific experi- ments, and our childish songs to grand cantatas. This school year has been another victorious one for the Dalton High Catamount Marching Band, and for the DHS Concert Band, as well. We attended Mid South Marching Festival, and showed at our 5th Annual Governor's Marching Festival, re- turning from both with a long string of superior ratings. Our most important contest of the year was the Miami Winter-national Festival, whose participants consisted of the greatest high school bands in America. There we placed a close fourth, and marched the pre-game show for the Miami Dolphins New York Jets game. The Con- cert Band gave a Christmas and Spring concert, and an assembly for the school at the end of the school year. At the concert festival in Cartersville, we rated excellent in concert and superior in sight-reading. 31 DHS CATAMOUNT BAND 1972-73 Director: Melvin Morgan Asst. The new four man front seemed to be successful as Dalton played an outstanding defensive game. CALHOUN: In the first home game of the season, Dalton finished victorious in a narrow 7-6 verdict. Because the game could hardly be described as a success, the Catamounts prac- ticed on the following Saturday. ROSSVILLE: On this wet Friday night, the Catamounts suffered the first defeat of the season. After being stunned in the first half, Dalton unsuc- cessfully tried to make a comeback. Holding the Bull- dogs scoreless in the second half, they chalked up 13 points, falling short of Ros- sville’s 21. CAMPBELL: Highly-favored Dalton had to settle for a scoreless stalemate against the invading Campbell Tigers of Smyrna. The rain and light- ning did not hinder one team more than the other, but Dal- ton, in spite of the usual out- standing defense, could not muster an offensive attacking unit. MARIETTA: The Catamounts got back on the winning track by defeating the Blue Devils 8- 7. Late in the fourth quarter Dalton drove 69 yards in seven plays to score their only touchdown. Having decided to go for all or nothing, they made the important two-point play. SOUTH COBB: Catamounts suffered the second defeat of the season to South Cobb. The Eagles scored ten, second half points after being held to a deadlock in the first half. Dal- ton dropped to 3-2-1 for the season and 1-1-2 in Region 5AAA competition. DOUGLAS COUNTY: Despite coming out on the short end of a 1 3-7 score, the Catamounts probably played one of the best games of the season against the undefeated highly- ranked Douglas County Tigers. WHEELER: Dalton celebrated a happy Homecoming with an easy 34-14 victory over the Wheeler Wildcats. Dalton’s much improved offense amassed 302 yards to Wheeler's 82. This skirmish which had been postponed one night, moved the Cats above the 500 level to 4-3-1, and 2-3-1 in region play. SPRAYBERRY: The Catamounts’ road season ended with an established 20- 7 victory over the Sprayberry Yellow Jackets. The outcome was never in doubt as Dalton tallied one touchdown in each of the last three quarters of the game. R. L. OSBORNE: At halftime, Dalton trailed the Cardinals 7- 6, but after half time, the Cats put it together and charged out to win the second half 24- 0. Dalton thus concluded with a 30-7 win. 91 92 97 VARSITY ROYS FRONT; David Redwme — Manoger, Nicky Starting, James Wofford, John Horn, Alon O'Bryant, jimmy Howell, Tommy Mo- con, Robert O'Neal, Dovid Shaw—Trainer BACK: Do- vid Nowell,—Manoger, Monty Willi . WEST ROME: In the first game of the season, both squads had to come from behind to claim their close wins. NORTH WHITFIELD: The Catamounts, dis- playing a fine defense, claimed their third victim, but the Kittymounts were out- hustled by the arch-rivals, Pioneer Girls. EAST ROME: The boys suffered the first loss of the season at the hands of un- beaten host East Rome. The girls emerged victorious after overcoming a slow start. MODEL: The Kittymounts romped to a 61- 33 win over visiting Model, and the Catamount's victory put them back on the winning track. RINGGOLD: The unde- feated Ringgold girls were knocked off the pedestal by the invading Kittymounts, while the Cats turned back the Ringgold boys. LAKEVIEW: The Dalton squads captured a doubleheader from visiting Lakeview, and both team extended their sparkling cre- dentials to 6-1. CHATTOOGA: The Kittymounts demol- ished their opponents from Chattooga County, 70-18, but the boys found the cards stacked against them. Coach Chap- man was having a rough night, and re- ceived his walking papers while talking with one of the Catamounts during a Chat- tooga free throw, a situation allowed by the rules book. Coach Brackett took over the coaching job, and the boys almost claimed victory, but fell at the bitter end, 69-66. NORTH GEORGIA INVITATION TOUR- NAMENT: In the first night of action, the boys enjoyed a decisive triumph over host West Side. On the following night, it was the girls’ turn, and they fought for victory over the unbeaten West Side girls. The third night of the Christmas Tournament saw the Kittymounts pulling together at the end of the game for a 53-51 win over Ringgold, while the Catamounts also moved into the finals as they raced past opponent North Whitfield. In the finals, the boys were surprised by Murray County, and although they struggled hard, the Cats fell by 4 points. The girls were pitted against North Whitfield, the only team that had beaten the Kittymounts to date. Kittymounts poured on the steam to win 42-32, and were crowned champions of the Tournament. MODEL: Both games were decided in the final quarter as the Red teams pulled away from their hosts. EASTBROOK: On their home court, Daltor manhandled the Eastbrook squads, with boys rolling to a 75-50 victory after the girls posted a 56-24 win. WEST FANNIN: The West Fannin girls were beaten soundly by the Kittymounts, but the Cats saw a 14-point lead evapo- rate incredibly in the fourth quarter as they fell to the invading West Fannin boys by 5 points. CHATTOOGA: The girl's team breezed past host Chattooga County, but the boys were outhustled, and suffered their second loss to the Chattooga boys. LAKEVIEW: The girls extended their sea- son record to 15-1 by defeating the vis- iting Lakeview squad, but the boys' team, suffering another loss, fell to their oppo- nent, whom they had beaten earlier in the season. CALHOUN: Previously beaten Calhoun re- turned home with a pair of victories. The Kittymounts were feeling the effects of the flu, but they almost found enough strength to win, the final score being 47-45. The Catamounts almost snapped their losing streak, but fell in the final minute. RINGGOLD: Dominating the 4th quarter, the girls won their game, and then watched the boys shatter a four-game los- ing streak. EAST ROME: A slow-starting skirmish ended up with the Kittymounts emerging as the victor, while the Catamounts pulled together to defeat visiting East Rome, to whom they had lost earlier in the season. WEST FANNIN: The girls clipped West Fannin to chalk up their 1 8th win in 20 at- tempts, but the boys, playing tremen- dously well, could not overcome the odds, which were stacked in favor of host West Fannin. Twenty-three personal fouls were called on the Cats by the Tennessee offi- cials, compared to the meager three against the home team. WEST ROME: The Kittymounts claimed their 19th victim by registering a second triumph over host West Rome, but in the boys skirmish, the host gained revenge for an earlier defeat. EASTBROOK: The girls gained an easy victory over Eastbrook, and the boys claimed a win, too, despite the change in the starting lineup, which was made to fool Rossville scouts present. NORTH WHITFIELD: An overflow crowd at the North Whitfield gym saw the Kit- tymounts capture a close one from the rival North Whitfield girls. The Catamounts had a suprisingly tough time in claiming victory. REGION 5-AAA TOURNEMENT: The boys gained a berth in the tournament at Mar- ietta by outlasting Rossville, 58-55, on the Dalton court. The first night of the Tourna- ment at Marietta found the Kittymounts breezing to a 59-21 win, and the Catamounts stunned favored Marietta by a 65-55 victory. Both teams rested the second night, but on the following night, the girls advanced one more step by de- feating Campbell of Smyrna, and the boys echoed the girls triumph by taking Che- rokee. The Red Teams were only one game away from state berths. The fourth night of tournament action brought disaster to the Kittymounts. Fighting all the way, the final buzzer found the girls 3-points be- hind Wheeler, the team that later won the title. The Catamounts qualified for state activity by surprising their foes in a 54-43 win over the Wheeler boys. In the finals of the Region 5-AAA Tournament, the weary Catamounts were denied the title by Campbell. In the 5 nights of the tourna- ment, the Cats had played four times, while the Championship game was Camp- bell’s first game. The boys fought hard be- fore falling to the Campbell team. STATE TOURNAMENT: The Catamounts traveled to Atlanta to play under Georgia Tech's Alexander Dome. Their opponent was powerful Clark Central, who stopped the Cats from advancing further by a deci- sive victory. 102 103 1973 DALTON HIGH TRACK TEAM 104 FIRST ROW: David Willis, Stephen Farrow, Scott Millsap, Alan Little, Chris McClain, Tim Hough, Mike Trollinger, Croig Webb, Hugh Means, Mar- cus Mocon, Marcus Anderson, Greg Townsend, Guy Abernathy. Yes, here we are— all one thousand, one hundred and eighty-nine of us, gathering in our circle —to study, —to play, —to sleep, —or whatever else most people do during their high school years. It all started on August 28 When we flocked to the school for that glorious day of registration. After registration, we left not knowing anymore than when we came but that we had to return two days later for the first day of school. As we rode to school, we were aware that —men were dying in Viet Nam, —the population of America was over 200 million, —and the pollution was growing worse every day. Yet, when we got to school, somehow those green walls separated us from the rest of the world. We couldn’t see dirty air, or 200 million people, or dead boys and hijacked planes in our 5 minute walk from one class to the other . . . 129 . . . So we just settled down —to study —to play —to sleep or whatever else most people do during their high school years 131 Guy Abernathy 10 Richard Abernathy 10 Shane Abernathy 1 1 Richard Adorns 9 But it was difficult to study. For those who couldn't study or for those who just didn't study, there were always movies and football games. But movies got old, and football games were only on Friday. So, most people just took off on their various kinds of wheels to cruise town, which really didn’t offer much in the way of entertainment. There were two theatres, two pizza parlors, a bowling alley, a couple of record shops, not to mention Burger Chef and Hardees. Then came McDonald’s, which brings us to wonder how we got along without it. We flocked to the newly-opened McDonald’s not only for food, but for jobs. So, for the most part, we just settled for an evening of —relaxing —eating —and listening to the music! . . . As the year went on everyone got wrapped up in the 1972 elections. Although many pretended not to have anything to do with it, there was no escape. Those in Government and American History classes were definitely caught in a trap. By the second week of November the results were out. Nixon was re-elected with new ideas on the growing inflation and the war in Viet Nam. Yet, little did he know that as the year wore on he would be confronted with the scandal of the century; An event that will go down in history books as —The Watergate Affair. On December 7, 1972 at 12:33 a.m., Apollo 17 blasted off for a 12 day journey to the moon which would mark the final lunar -orbit of this century. ‘i ' “As we leave the moon, stated Commander Eugene A. Cernan, “we leave as we came, and God willing, we shall return with peace and hope for all mankind. . . . Meanwhile, back on earth, we, the people of Dalton and elsewhere in the country, were confronted with— weather. On January 8, 1 973 we awoke to behold a world unfolded into a magical ice palace. Power lines were down in most parts of the city causing millions of dollars worth of damage. Schools were out for the first two days but resumed on the third amidst what was left of the ice. Then, on March 17, 1973, came the flood accompanied by tornadoes. These marked only the first of many tornadoes and floods that would haunt us during the spring months. But amidst all the commotion and turmoil, one can still find moviegoers leaving the theatre with their stomachs in knots after viewing The Poseidon Adventure, Deliverance, or The Getaway . . . And no one will forget the motion picture that showed in Dalton for 8 weeks— Walking Tall. Did it make you stand up and applaud? Many students joined the crowds to see Lep Zeppelin, Chicago, or the Allman Brothers appearing in Atlanta. Jeans and clogs, baggies and bow ties were in then. So were we . . . 153 DONALD PAUL AMONETT—SGA 1; DHS Chorus 1,2,3,4; Singing Group 3; Men's Quartet 4; Science Club 3,4; Y-Club 2,3,4, Pres. 2, Sec. 3, Pres. 4, Basketball 1,2; FT A 3,4; Hi-Light 4, Editor 4; National Honor Society 2,3,4, Pres. 4. KAREN ROSE WELLS CLAUDE EDWARD WHITMIRE JEANNE WHITWORTH JOAN MARIE WILEY 168 THE NIFTY FIFTIES SENIOR PARTY-BANQUET May 19, 1973 “The Fifties “Like one night me and my chick Peggy Sue, were bopping to the Bandstand on the tube. It got kinda dullsville, so we jumped in my set of wheels to drag main, but passing the High, we saw one of the craziest hops going on. Everybody there was cool, but the coolest cats were a couple of dudes going by Barry and Russ, singing about hound dogs and blue suede shoes. Of course, dress was formal. Where- ever you looked you could find greased down d.a.’s, black leather jackets, rolled-up jeans, pony-tails, and bebops with white socks! After shoving down our grub, a couple of us strolled on over to the gym where Blue Grass sounds were flying all night. And, Daddy-O, some mean Marilyn Monroe was there, so I tried to move in but like, she told me to DDT (drop dead twice). Dan was cutting the floor with Peggy, so me and Barbara Ann went to it. Later, we hung loose while my gal Sal and a few others gave out Boobie Awards. You could tell the band really dug our gig, because those guys were really blowing mean tunes. I tell you this gang could have rocked around the clock, but it split at mid and each flew his own coop. Part of the gang boo- gied up to “Nooga” and some went ‘'Main for a while. But me and Peggy Sue got back together and bopped on over to the Pas- sion Pit (to you squares, the drive-in). We were like dead- sville, but man for that night I was King and she was keen and we both had it made in the shade. by Benny Rotten 1. WHIT DAVIES—Janice Meadows Drama Award. 2. Hamilton August 18, 1973 The year 1973 was an eventful one. While ex-convict Jack Brown, heavy-weight champion Paul Anderson, The Spurrlows, and the Southern Ballet Company visited our campus, prices were rising, pollution was getting worse, and a fuel shortage was upon us. On January 27, 1973 a final agreement brought about a ceasefire which ended the longest war of U.S. involvement, with a promise to have POW's home within 60 days. The first POW arrived home on Febru- ary 14, followed by more POW's, the last to arrive home on March 27, 1973. Major Thomas V. Parrot, POW from our own city, gained freedom on March 14, 1973 and we celebrated his arrival with Major Parrot Day—April 5th. The whole city gathered for a parade and ceremony in which the mayor presented to Major Parrot the key to the city. Inside our green walls we sometimes felt separated from the world outside. But, at last— We were given a chance to express our emotions and give support to a nationwide event and feel a part . . . 179 With the election, the Watergate affair, and the skylab expedition challenging the world, we were faced with our own challenges. The Senior class had their problems trying to concoct a Senior prank that would be remembered in the future . . . ( the toupee, crickets, etc., will certainly not be forgotten!) The band hit the road for Miami and the boy's basketball team hit the boards of the Tech Dome for the first time in DHS History. Mary Beth Wells travelled to state competition as Whitfield County's Jr. Miss. And who will forget the football game where it was everything or nothing? We went for everything . . . and came out on top— 8-7 over rival, Marietta. And not long after, Denise Ellis walked on the 50 yard line as Homecoming Queen. Her sister, Diane, captured the title of Miss DHS in the Sweetheart festivities. Along with the bright lights and publicity, there were others working in another circle of accomplishment— Work-study program students left each day for their respective jobs. Service Clubs wrote words of wisdom on the blackboards, and the Hi-Light staff scurried around to make the deadlines. The Annual Staff enjoyed a picture-taking session with DHS's Homebound student, Claude Davis, and his instructor, Mrs. Kelehear. . . . Yes, time after time we were spun around in the circle of activities we chose for ourselves. We discovered the joy of reaching a goal— and the disappointments when dreams are shattered. We laughed together and cried together and every shining moment was shared by many. We have grown up together— And we have grown together. 183
