Presenting Spectator 1983 Dallastown High School June 1983 Within These Halls Walk The Greatest People In The World . . . . Our Students -Anonymous 1983 Spectator Literary Staff One of our goals this year is to satisfy the wants and expectations of the Dallastown students and faculty. We would like the book to serve as a reference of the year 1983, for future use in school, as well as the community. We would also like the memo- ries of the year to be kept alive through imaginative pictures and well-written arti- cles. We wanted tradition to be brought back to Dallastown by the class of '83. The Editors - Susan Anderson Mark King This year's yearbook staff is comprised of many talent- ed and hard working stu- dents. Along with the help of Michael Baldwin, advisor, the staff puts out approxi- mately 40 pages every three weeks. To make the job even more challenging, strict deadlines are set. These deadlines have to be met on time in order to release the book at the earliest time and at the least cost. This year there is a monetary budget of $10,000.00, which is regu- lated by Mr. Baldwin and the editors. This money is raised through yearbook sales and through the sales of spaces in the Spectator used for ad- vertisements. This year's staff chose not to include a main theme in their book as to please a large majority of the students. 1983 The Staff: (L-R) Row 1 - B. Munchel, P. Seville, D. Sindlinger, T. Cable, B. With less people they hope to better handle the work before them. The Business Staff is in charge of the selling and distribution of yearbooks, along with the collection of business ads. This year the managers are Ed Derry and Eric Krimmel. Miss Nadine Miller is the faculty advisor. FRIENDS AND COMMENTS FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION Dallastown High L. Adams-Social Studios J. The theme for the dance was Stairway to Heaven, and the hard rock band Centaur provided the music for the some 440 people in attendance. Teresa commented, This was one of the best Homecomings I have ever seen. There was so much enthusiasm at the dance itself and in the weeks of preparation for Homecoming. I hope it was a most memorable experience for every- one who attended. The juniors and seniors won the annual float competition and received $100 which was divided between the classes. The Homecoming festivities began on Thursday night with the parade and bonfire- pep rally led by the cheerleaders and football players. The football game was played on Friday evening beginning with the presentation of the Homecoming Court. The Wildcats reluctantly gave the victory to the York High Bearcats with a score of 19-35. Teresa Cable is escorted by her father. Making last minute plans for a cheer. Each part adds something different to the quality of the band's performance. The majorettes add sparkle, glamour and rhythm to the music. The flags add color as well as sharpness and the rifles add precision and military effect. The bandfront adds the entertainment to go with the music. The band and the bandfront work in harmony, each complimenting one another. Song Only Time Will Tell You're leaving now, it's in your eyes, there's no disguising it, it really comes as no surprise to find that you planned it all along. I see it now, becomes so clear, your insincerity, we are starry eyed, you think that I would have known by now. Now sure as the sun will cross the sky, this lying's over, lost like the tears that used to tide me over. One thing is sure, that time will tell, I know you were wrong. Brightest light around the room, talk of when I die. Now sure as the sun will cross the sky, this lying is over, gone like the tears that used to tide me over. You're on your own, inside your room, you're claiming victory, weren't just using me, and there is no one you can use now. Good Times at D-town High — that is what the last couple of years here at Dallastown have been. The memories of these years will be ours forever, and these memories will let us keep our pride for Dallastown and for our class. But now the year has come to an end. We will go our separate ways, and some of us will not see our friends as much as we do now, maybe even never again. So I would just like to say thank you to the class of '83 and Dallastown for the good times. 32 John Childress president, Class of 1983 1. He made the most touchdowns in a single game (5), in a season (17), and in a career (28). He also broke records by rushing 317 yards in a single game, 1252 yards in a season, and 2175 yards in a career. Smith won an All-State honorable mention for outstanding running- back, and was one of 2 All-County, first team runningbacks. He was also tied for the leading scorer in York County. He plans to attend college, which he hopes will be financed by football scholarships. Tracy was very disappointed when Bob Morrison, his companion in football for 8 years, was badly injured in the beginning of the season and was unable to play. Tracy says he loves football because It's a team effort. Everyone is pulling together, trying to accomplish the victory. It's exciting to watch and play. Although he is obviously talented, Tracy says that The runningback is only as good as his offensive line. He feels that his performance was a reflection of the quality of the team. The Wildcat Gridmen finished the 1982 Football season with a record of 3-7. This year's captains were Bob Morri- son, Greg Grove, and Tracy Smith. According to Head Coach John Pitzer, the team was held back by unfortunate injuries, but pulled out with a strong finish. Coach Pitzer goes on to say that the team was better than the record shows. The team never stopped trying, and there were many excellent performances by individual players. The offensive line, as well as the entire team, improved as the season progressed. We ended the season with a smashing 35-14 victory over Red Lion. Managers 88 (L to R) Row 1 - K. Palmer, S. Altland, Row 2 - ). Kemper, L. lehr, A. Bupp, T. Weber. s 0 (L to R) Row 1 - S. Wilson, R. The most successful girls' tennis season in six years can be described as nothing short of stunning. This group had come up from two rela- tively uneventful seasons and in the beginning had only two experienced players returning. Then, long-over- due luck fell upon the team in the person of Petra Hamberg, an ex- change student from the Nether- lands. With Petra at the 1 spot, Deb Uricheck and Sue Anderson filling 2 and 3, and Birgitt Schaffler Jolene Willman rising to the number 4 and 5 spots. The team was set for some serious competition. Compete is what the team did, because they ended the season with an impressive 7-3 record, which set them in forth place in league standings. The Dallastown Golf Team completed another Impressive season under the direction of coach Kehr. This year the team compiled a 9W-2L - and IT winning record and finished second in the league. Dazzling performances by starters Jeff Weidener, Chick Russo, Steve Prindle, Chris Prindle, and lone senior golfer Scott Thompson, highlighted the season. Coach Kehr stated, We found ourselves in a much better position at the end of the year than we had expected. Starter Chick Russo gained further admiration by finishing 2nd at counties, 8th at districts, and 14th in state competition. Russo was one of only two York County golfers who qualified for state competition. With such excellent golfing, the Wildcat Golf Team has come to be recognized as a dominant force in the YCIAA and promises even more success in the future. CERBER (VARSI TY) This year's Varsity Basketball team had a season of up's and down's. After starting off the season by winning 5 out of their first 6 games the Wildcats finished with an overall record of 13- 12. It was an injury riddled season for the varsity. At one time during the season, 4 of the 10 players were sidelined with injuries. This was Coach Gerber's first year of head coaching the varsity. He wishes to thank the team for their efforts and cooperation during the season. Coach Gerber added this about the team's Seniors, I want to thank you for your many hours of practice to make the Wildcats a better team. It has been my privlege to be associated with such fine young gentlemen. This year's Seniors were Dave Strayer, Brian Greenplate, Scott Deardorff, Dan Shuler, and Patrick Tickle. The underclassmen of this year's team, all of which played a tremendous role in the team's season, were John Moore, Tim Gohn, Kris Deardorff, Brad Markey, and Duane Dise. Although the team's record was not great, this year's varsity team was just that, a team . It should be a year fondly remembered in the years to come by the members of the 1982-83 Varsity Basketball team. After losing five of their first seven games, they came on to be a very strong team during league play. Coach Mike Pokopec, in his first year of coaching at Dallastown, gave an increase in team desire as a major factor in his team's turnaround. He said that his players gave everything they had, and that they never gave up during the season. Coach Pokopec said that he was most pleased with the team's steady improvement throughout the year. The team began as a group of individuals, but as the guys became a team they began to become much more competitive. , said Coach Pokopec. The team's leading scorer was Corey Knaub, averaging sixteen points per game. Coach Pokopec expressed that this team was a team of role players, each man on the team had a way in which he could best help the team. This combina- tion of talents came together to produce an excellent year for the 1982-83 J.V. Wildcats. During the school year A residential neighborhood in one of (or any of) America’s large cities On March 17 and 19, the Class of '84 presented Andrew Leslie's adaptation of The Pigman, by Paul Zindel. This book has long been a major piece of teenage fiction, and so it was appropriate for the junior class to present this comic drama. Under the direction of Mr. Michael Baldwin, the faculty coordination of Mr. Owen Paden and Mrs. Lynne Shive, and the student direction of Tina Kotek and Darryl Hummel, the play sported a talented cast. The action centered around two high school students, Lorraine and John, played by Amy Ruth and Mike Henry, who were looking for something besides school to occupy their time. In their random selection of crank phone calls, they met a retired widower, played by Matt Wynn, who happened to collect small statues of pigs. The students' repeated contacts with him were at first prompted by their intention to get money from him for a fake charity, but they were eventually drawn into his life. The fast-moving action led into a growing sense of compassion and a coming of age for John and Lorraine, which was all reflected by the poignant ending. Being president of National Honor Society has really been a plus during my senior year. Tutoring other students gives me a sense of achievement when I see the results, and it also gives me a chance to get to know more underclassmen. I think it's great that Dallastown has an organization that focuses on academic achieve- ment and scholastic involvement. Beth Gemmill president The members of this year's Honor Society were inducted in the spring of last year. They were chosen on the basis of their leadership, character, service, and scholastic ability. It is the duty of each member to give up study hall time in order to tutor a fellow stu- dents in a subject in which he needs help. Advisor 117 Miss Tuscano s t e n t We Accept Looking back on the activities held during the year, I've tried to determine the main factor which made each event a successful event. Besides having hard working officers who care about making Dallastown the best it can be, there is a larger group of people who contribute to the ultimate goal of council. That goal is involvement, and the people who made it happen are the stu- dents. This is the best group of stu- dents I've seen at Dallastown and as President of the Student Council, I'd like to thank you for a job well done. -Donna Deerin president Student Council Representatives: (clockwise) R. Our Student Council has been developing many programs and projects which make the stu- dent government a very important facet of our total school. This brings added responsibility to the members of council and provides them with a wide variety of experiences from which to learn. The challenge for Dallastown's student leaders is to reach out to involve the uninvolved and there- by make our school a better place for everyone. -George W.W. The stu- dent body has proved to be very willing to partici- pate and I am sure they will make this year one of the best Dallastown has experience in a long time. -John Wilke treasurer I believe this year's council is much more en- thusiastic; this is due to the determination of the officers to produce a better council. Hopefully, next year's council will be just as ambitious. -Sue Anderson secretary With the outstanding members we have this year, council has really surpassed its goals of school pride and new activities. I have always felt that student council should be an important orga- nization in the school, and with this year's repre- sentatives, we have made student council even more of an asset to the school and community. -Roberta Bommer vice-president Student Council Senate: (L to R) row 1: F. Miss Pacholak is in her first year as advisor for the paper. The literary staff is larger this year with thirty-nine members. Also, for the first time, the Beacon has a business staff. Making the Beacon an extra-curricular activity this year created a lot of problems for the advisor. Miss Pacholak, and the students on the staff, but because everyone worked hard, this year's Beacon was a success. Many new things were attempted this year including a six-page anniversary issue, Valentine's Day messages, and a special section in the paper for student writing called Creative Expressions. Stagehand A The Blue Silk and Satin, Dallastown Area High School's stagehand, has enjoyed many years of public and private performances along the eastern seaboard of the United States. Its reputation has been built on a professional musical quality and an excellent cooperation with the organization for which it is performing. Under the superb direction of Ronald Hill, the jazz band teaches students the Big Band swing sound of the 30's and 40's. Also, the modern jazz sounds of Maynard Ferguson, Check Mangione, and Stan Kenton are discovered. Student opinions of Mr. Hill include statements such as demanding, perfectionist, talented and involved. The art of improvisation, which is the very heart of jazz, develops within many of the performers. The stagehand looks forward to many more years of sharing their art with eager audiences, as they did so beautifully this year. n d S a t i n Professional Musical Quality 129 Music Marches On Being a drum major is a lot of fun, but it is also a lot of work. The many tedious and long hours of work paid off on the football field. We worked as a team and we survived as a team. Through the season we displayed our own unique style and we set a precedent never before seen at Dal- lastown. It has been an enjoyable and rewarding season and we're looking forward to upcoming events. We would like to thank ev- eryone, especially the seniors, for their support and cooperation.
