After football games, parties, and school activities, McDonald's is filled with Dallastown students. The Spectator Staff has chosen to symbolize the good times we’ve had by a McDonald's yearbook. We, the seniors, have many fond memories of how we’ve grown up in the past four years. Remem- ber in ninth and tenth grades how we would look for someone to take us to McDonald’s after the games? We couldn't wait to drive. When we finally could drive in eleventh and twelfth grades, we always took turns driving because it was too much trouble to pick up everyone. Besides, we never had any gas in our cars anyway. The Spectator Staff did not choose the McDon- ald’s theme to be childish. Many of the things that we will always remember have happened at McDon- ald’s. For example, there was a scheduled fight ev- ery week. There were to be head vs. jock fights as well as Dallastown vs. Suburban fights. Some of us became members of the 51 club. We always bought one soda every hour, just so we could sit inside and not get kicked out. You could always go to McDon- ald’s and see someone you knew. On Friday nights, the place was filled to capacity, and that's what made it fun. This yearbook is designed to bring back fond memories when it is opened ten years from now. What one place best represents where the Class of '82 saw each other, shared the same laughs and the same troubles? McDonald’s. The Spectator Staff McDonald Madness 5 titior Greetings From Management The This edition of the Spectator serves as a record of our program, as well as the personal contributions of both staff and students. We are fortunate indeed to have had dedicated people from the many facets of our program featured in this book. As the years go by, this book will become increasingly more valuable. It is my sincere hope that fond memories and appreciation of your brief time in Dallastown High will be renewed in your mind each time you read this book. Kindest personal regards to all and best wishes to the members of the Class of 1982. George W. W. Jones, Jr. 8 BUILD A BIG MAC . One stamp can be obtained on the first day of school. The second one is available after taking midterms, and a third stamp will be given to each player after the completion of finals. 2. Each player must start as a freshman and build upward in the proper sequence. Except in cases of extreme luck and intelligence, no level may be skipped. 3. One missing stamp in a row will cause repetition of that row or even possible disqualification. 4. The potential for a winning season was there. The Varsity baseball team started off with an impressive 5-1 pre-season record. The team scored 41 runs in the 6 pre-season games. Coach Shoff was disappointed, howev- er, in posting a 3-11 record in league play. He commented, A glance at the scores and one can tell we could score runs this year. We just couldn’t keep the other team from scoring more than we did.” John Gemmill led the team in batting with an average of .428. Overall the team’s batting average was .280. Seniors on the team were Dan Douglas, Paul Elliott, Ed Williams, and Dave Pawloski. Dan Douglas lettered three years, had a career record of 22-15-2, participated in districts three years, and was third in the 1981 York Invitational Tournament. Paul Elliott lettered three years, had a career record of 18-15, and went to districts his senior year. Ed Williams lettered two years and had a career record of 12-11. Despite the low percentage of wins, the girls' ten- nis team gained some sense of accomplishment this year. Sickness and injury plagued the team until well into the second half of the season. Yet in the face of almost constant instability in the start- ing lineup, the team remained a close-knit, deter- mined group. Their determination paid its dividend when near the end of the season the team picked off its first victories in over a year. The league will remain tough, but with three starters returning, next year should prove more fruitful. They were lead by first year head Coach Jeri Myers and Co-Captains Tara Keeney and Paula Emenheiser. At the beginning of the season, we lacked experience and skill, but we held together as a team and continued working toward our goals. By the end of the season, we were Feeling The Flow. Even though our team didn’t have a successful team standing as far as win-loss records, each individual team member was a winner,” commented Coach Myers. The Stickwomen celebrated victories over York High, Kennard Dale, which was the annual night game, and West York which ended with penalty strokeoffs. Bev Munchel, a junior, was chosen for the York Daily Record All-Star team. Honorable mentions were given to Paula Smith, Angel Fantom, Tara Keeney and Paula Emenheiser. Bev Munchel and Tara Keeney were also recognized with honorable mentions by the York Dispatch. For the 1981 season, the high scorer was Paula Emenheiser, offensive player Paula Smith, defensive players Kelly Myers, Tara Keeney and Bev Munchel, playmaker and hustler Bev Munchel. They extended last years’ winning streak to fourteen games. Coach Pitzer described the season as very suc- cessful, considering it was the toughest schedule in the school’s history.” The addition of Central Penn powers, Steel High and York High, brought on a major challenge. The Dallastown gridmen won their first four games before suffering a loss to Steel High. The Homecoming game against Spring Grove ended in a draw between the wildcats and rockets. All hope for the championship was lost when York High shut out Dallastown with a score of 12-0. The Wildcats recovered from these losses and came back to win the final three games. Dallastown competed in the newly formed soccer league for the first time this year. The team’s record was 2-7-1, with both wins over York Suburban. The team promises to get bet- ter due to the fact that it consisted of all un- derclassmen. Charlie Anstadt led the team with the most goals, while Bill Gaurin had the most assists. Coach Kudler Grapplers Win Third Straight Title s t r e a k Dallastown wrestling was no different this year than it has been in past years. The wrestling team completed a perfect 17-0 season. Due to this perfect season and some convincing wins, Dallastown was rated number one in District Three for all of the season and number four in the state. Dallastown dominated in every dual meet with the exception of a pressure cooker with Dover for the league championship. Since a loss to Hanover in the 78-79 season, Dallastown has won 57 consecutive matches and this win streak may be extended even further next season. The wrestlers also won their annual holiday tournament for only the second time and, in addition, took first place at the prestigious Lititz Lions Club Tournament. After all was said and done, Dallastown had three undefeated wrestlers and six Y.C.I.A.A. All-Stars. The undefeated wrestlers were Scott Dolmetsch, Ron Myers, and Dave Gable. The All-Stars included Scott Thompson, Scott Dolmetsch, Ron Myers, Dave Gable, Dave Bell, and Dave Brenneman. In post season action, the name of Dallastown shined. The team captured the section- al team trophy by winning seven individual sectional titles. Sectional champs were Mark Noll, Ron Myers, Brooks Seitz, Dave Gable, Dave Bell, Keith Folkenroth, and Dave Brenneman. Next, the Wildcats accomplished a feat that no Dallastown wrestling team has ever gained recognition for. They won the District Three team championship! Mark Noll and Keith Folkenroth were both crowned disctrict champs and Dave Gable dropped a decision to finish runner-up. Scott Dolmetsch and Dave Bell qualified for states by getting third. In state competition Dave Gable placed 3rd and Mark Noll placed 5th. Gable also set a new county record with 101 wins. ’82 Senior Wrestlers Scott lost many pounds this sea- son and made a big sacrifice, but that sacrifice and hard work paid off. Scott wrestled better in some matches than I have ever seen him wrestle. He got his head together and became a very valuable asset. Skeeter’s senior year of wres- tling will be one that he will re- member for a long time to come. Scott Dolmetsch- 112 lb. Ron was the kind of wrestler this season who made other coaches ask the question. Where did this kid come from?” His speed allowed him to be all over opponents. Ron made a lot of hay in the crucial Dover match. I sometimes wonder what would have happened if Ron hadn't gotten that pin. Because Ron came out of nowhere , I think he made a very big impres- sion on everyone. It was great be- ing on the team with someone like Ron. 8rooks completed the Seitz brothers' wrestling legacy this year. As Mr. Bence has said many a time, Brooks is best when the chips are down! Mild-mannered Brooks would step onto the mat and pull off some of the most un- predictable upsets. I think the situ- ation that he will remember best is his decision over Steve Frank at the Dover match. Even though Brooks usually kept overyone in suspense about his weight, he never let any- one down. (Editor's note- Sorry about the picture. Brooks!) Ron Myers- 132 lb. Brooks Sietz- 138 lb. Dave Gable- 145 lb. Dave Gable was the team's prima donna, but I'm glad for that because without him we wouldn't have gotten our fourth place state ranking! (Just kid- ding Dave!) Dave set a very high standard for the wrestlers, and many, including myself, tried to work as long and as hard as Dave to reach that standard. I sincerely hope that Dave has a successful college career and that he continues to make the most of his talent. Dave Bell- 155 lb. Dave Bell was one of the team's- insurance men be- cause he wrestled at 155. He was the one who got the honor of locking away the match for safe-keeping. I always wondered where Dave got those flexible legs. I wish I could have been born with a pair of legs like his. Dave made a very good showing in the league by coming away with All-County honors and an undefeated league record. Dave always had his head on straight and it showed. Dave Brenneman- Hwt. Dave Brenneman, well, what can I say about him? I think I had a very good year. I fulfilled my own expectations and prob- ably surpassed the expectations of most of the Dallastown fans. I think that the undorconfidence of the fans made me work harder and gave me something for which to win. I was mighty proud of the whole team this year and I am proud of Dallas- town wrestling. One final thing. I'd like to thank Mr. Bence for helping me achieve some goals I never thought I could achieve. Last, but not least, is the late-comer to the starting lineup, Bret Malehorn. Bret, who was eliminated at the beginning of the year by Ron Myers at 132 lbs., gained a starting spot at 185 lbs. near the end of the season. He wrestled a great match at Dover. I’m really glad he broke into the lineup. He deserved to wrestle varsity after all those years of hard work. Well, those are the 1982 senior Wildcat wrestlers. I hope the descriptions were accurate, even though they were subjective. As a senior wrestler, I’d like to say that we’re all very proud of what we have done. Maybe some day, some of our children will wrestle for Mr. Bence even though he says he is going to quit after next year. Oh well, he’s been saying that for the past few years! 50 Dave Brenneman '82 ’82 J.V. Wrestlers Row 1 (L-R). C. Baldwin, A. Ycc, J. Childress. M. Sweitzcr, R. Wilson. J. Daugherty, C. Oise. Row 2. C. Many times J.V.’s were called upon to step into crucial varsity situations and J.V.’s such as Andy Boll, Mark Sweitzer, and Jeff Daugherty did extremely well against tough oppo- nents. The J.V.’s showed themselves champions when they won both the Dallastown Invitational Christmas Tournament and the Palmyra J.V. Holi- day Tournament by over- whelming margins. The J.V.’s will definitely add towards making another championship next year. ’82 Junior High Wrestlers The junior high team posted a 10-2 record this year in the Y.C.I.A.A. The team had disappointing losses to West York and Dover. The team was young and inexperi- enced, but they still pulled out a respectable year. The high point of the year came at the very end when Dallastown had seven champions crowned en route to an overwhelming victory at the Wilson Booster Club Tournament. Kevin Fol- kenroth was the lone un- defeated wrestler for the junior high this year with a record of 12-0. Row 1 (L-R). B. Druck. T. Eckard, J. Druck. C. Myers, C. Prindlc, M. Malosky, M. Gutekunst. Girls’ The 1981-82 Girls’ Swim Team completed an- other successful season under the leadership of captains Teresa McLane, and Lisa Ferguson. The girls compiled an impressive league record of 9-3, with the only defeats coming at the hands of York Suburban and Red Lion. As the season wound to a close, Donna Deerin, Lisa Ferguson, Beth Roeder, and Roberta Bommer all qualified for district com- petition. During the season Beth Roeder shattered various team and pool records in the 200 Free, 200 IM. 100 Fly, 500 Free, and 100 Br. The 400 Free relay team of Deerin, Beck, Bommer, and Roeder also captured records. Boys’ Under the direction of captains Rob Clark, Steve Land, and diving captain Troy Leight, the boys' team also had an outstanding record. Chris Da- howski, Rob Clark, Dave Deitz, Steve Land, Ken Sterner, Bret Fisher, and Shaun Leiphart all moved onto Districts. The 400 Free Relay team of Clark, Land, Deitz, and Starner broke pool records, as did Clark in the 100 Breaststroke. The coaching staff of Jeri Myers, Mike Appleby, and Kathy Hevner was pleased with the enthusi- asm, motivation, and dedication of the 1981-82 Wildcat swimmers. Seniors: Row 1 (L. to R.) T. McLane. L. But to my disbelief, the players started running faster, jumping higher, and making a greater percentage of their shots and they had a very successful sea- son. I would like to thank our two juniors, Pat Tick- le and Steve Hildebrand, for their leadership, sense of humor, and good character they provided for the underclassmen. Cheryll, how long do I have to stand here?” Homecoming 1981 . . . Sailing Takes Me Away 80 Homecoming Weekend In New England The 1981-82 Homecoming Court (L to R) Lynne Cacciola. Cheryll Dccrin, Elizabeth Henry, Sherri Hartman. Debra Arnold, Paula Emcnheiser- queen. Homecoming weekend was held on October 9 and 10. The activities included a bonfire, a tie football game with Spring Grove, and the crowning of the queen, Paula Emenheiser. The theme for the dance was Sail Away to New England”. Nobody can do it like the class of ’82 can. We’ve survived four years of tardy passes, finals, food fights, and the long hours in the class- rooms of DHS. Maybe the weeks went too slowly, but the weekends always went too quickly. There were annual dances, Friday night football games, class activities, and many wild parties. Our class has had its share of trouble and its share of glo- ry. Each year seemed to get better and better, and finally we reached the ultimate, our senior year. Dur- ing this year, we let the good times roll”, and now we’re ready to face new goals and challenges. ’82, we did it all for you. 82 IN MEMORY OF DONNA MARIE RUTECKI Donna was born August 4, 1964 and died on May 7, 1976. She enjoyed gym- nastics, glee club, tennis, track, and dancing. Some people are solid gold; Donna had a solid gold person- ality. She shined in whatever she pursued. She loved life and lived it fully till the day she died. I cannot say, and I will not say That she is dead. She is just away! With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand. She has wandered into an unknown land, And left us dreaming how very fair. It needs must be, since she lingers there. And you-oh you, who the wildest yearn For the old-time step and the glad return, Think of her faring on, as dear In the love of There as the love of Here; Think of her still as the same, I say: She is not dead-she is just away. 85 We Deserve A Break Today! 89 B. Pawloski, D. Freed. P. Besser Dallastown was chosen to host the 45th Annual Conference of the Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils. Upon receiving the distinguished honor, the 13 committees began well over a year of intense planning for the three day event. During that planning period, few had any idea of the enthusiam that each delegate would bring with him or the excitement that would be generated by Willie on the lobby floor, the Varsity Club’s Mardi Gras, the speakers, banquet and dances. Many fond memories are remaining of the three days which were truly the highlight of this school year. Brant Bickel Conference Chairman 1981 PAS Touch Someone The following are the words of the official letter to Dallastown from the PASC member schools: Reach Out and Touch Someone” has become a statement that will live in the hearts and minds of all the delegates and advisors attending the 45th PASC Conference for many years to come. Your tireless efforts, creativity, originality and sincere desire to really touch our lives have had a profound effect on each and every one of us. When Willie was first introduced to us we began to sense the hospitality of the Dallastown community. The willingness of the Dallastown School District to strive for excellence, and the fantastic exibition of co-operation and togetherness of the faculty and students of Dallastown High School have made the past three days a motivating experience. We all have felt the full impact of a total community's outpouring of love and caring to create, for us, a life-long memory. To each of you we express our sincerest thanks and appreciation for Reaching Out and Touching Us. 139 Convention s p e c t a t o r u s ■ i n e s s S t a f f Row 1 (L. to R.) C. Bowman, T. Small, A. Members are chosen according to their leadership, character, service, and scho- lastic ability. The obligation of the members of the National Honor Society is to tutor other students. Each member gives up some of his studies to tutor one or more students who need help in a subject. This year the Honor Society also gave their free time to serve pancakes to the host families of the PASC delegates at the pancake break- fast held in October. (L-R) President. P. Smith; Secretary. J. This year Dallastown was honored to welcome 2 AFS students; Jose’ Vicente Perez from Colom- bia and Adolf Bereuter from Austria. Jose' Vicente Perez. President. Lisa Garrett. Secretary. Tami Davis- Treasurer. My name is Adolph Beirut. I am from Austria and I came to Amer- ica through the AFS program at Dallastown for the 1981-82 school year. America is really dif- ferent and the people are friendly most of the time. There were alot of new things and some of them shocked me. I will always remem- ber my year at Dallastown. I would like to thank everyone for this rewarding experience. My name is Jose Vicente Perez and I am 17 years old. I come from Colum- bia, South America. My first impres- sion of Dallastown were the friendly people. They made my stay enjoyable and full of good memories. My fondest memory will be my family - the McCoullough’s. I hope someday to re- turn to this warm country. In closing I would like to say Thanks America, thanks AFS! Exchange 14 5 s m a I I C I u b A r t Row 1 (LR) L. Henry. L. Vought. K. Golden. B.
