The Spectator Staff would like to welcome you to Spectisney World. We have reflected upon our past four years at Dallastown and have reached the conclusion that our lives are comparable to a theme park which we have chosen to designate as Spectisney World. We arrived at the entrance of Spectisney World as scared freshmen in Sep- tember of 1977 and were assigned to Pantasyland where we were recognized as “chippies by the inhabitants of other lands. We then ventured into Never Never Land seeing ourselves as sophisticated sophomores only to experience a letdown. This year lacked the excitement we had previously anticipated. We advanced one step farther and found ourselves within Frontierland in the fall of 1979. As this year passed, we spent much of our time preparing ourselves for the transition from impatient juniors to the ultimate goal of becoming a senior. Now that we are in Tomorrow-land living the life of proud seniors, we look upon our past and remember the many long hours we gave to the lands of It’s A Small World and The Enchanted Sports Kingdom trying to do our best for the betterment of our school and community. We, the seniors, will always remember 1981 as being unique. Though we can never relive the memories we had once shared together, we hope that each time you open the doors of Spectisney World these memories can become realities once again. We hope you enjoy your journey through Spectisney World and that you are able to view it the same way we do. The Spectator Staff Construction The expanded and improved facili- ties now being shown in Spectisney World represent the fourth major con- struction project at the park within an 18 year period. Spectisney World came into existence July 1, 1953. This loca- tion Tilled the park’s needs for five years. In September of 1958, Spectisney World was opened on a 53 acre site pur- chased a few years earlier. A new land consisting of additional attractions plus special facilities was opened in Septem- ber of 1964 toaccomadatc for increasing crowds. In 1971 a new park was con- structed in front of the main entrance to Spectisney World to house the youn- ger tourists. In January of 1976 the la- test addition to the park was made in Tomorrowland where seniors would pass most of their time. The facilities that are included in Spectisney World represent a community investment of nearly $10,000,000. The combined ef- forts of those who manage the park have certainly made Spectisney World an educational and extremely enjoyable experience. Operating Hours During the fall, winter, and spring, Spectisney World is normally open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. The park is normally closed during special holidays. Spectisney World offers extended study hours from 3:10 to 4:20 p.m. Monday through Friday. We advise Spectisney World guests to phone or write for exact infor- mation concerning days open, hours, events scheduled, performance times, etc., while planning a trip to Spectisney World. Parking Parking for cars will be provided on the lot directly in back of Spectisney World. Special parking spaces are re- served for Park Rangers and members of the Hall of Presidents. These spaces are designated by yellow lines and or signs. Any person who parks his car in Spectisney World’s parking lot will need to have the car registered in the park office. A Spectisney World identi- fication sticker will be placed on the right side of the rear bumper. We would remind all visitors of Spectisney World that the regulations of 15 m.p.h. in a park zone will be in effect. Lost And Found The Lo«t and Found Department is located in the park office. Anything lost should be reported to the office, and anything found should be brought to the office. Check daily for any item that you might have lost, for each year there are hundreds of unclaimed items left in the park office. Locker Service Facilities for storage of purchases, clothing, and books are located in each land of Spectisney World. Kach locker can be opened by the use of a three number sequence combination. When you enter Spectisney World you will be given the combination of the locker as- signed to you. Malfunctions of lockers should be reported to the park office. First Aid Spectisney World will provide the services of a registered nurse. If you be- come ill during your stay at Spectisney World, report to the nurse’s office which is located beside the park office. The nurse will not be available from 12:30 to 1:00 p.m., so it is advisable not to become ill during this time. Telephones Two public telephones are located in Spectisney World. Ask any park guide for directions. We remind you there is a ten cent fee for phone usage. The counter telephone in the park office is available to tourists free of charge if you can convince the park personnel that your call is an emergency. Dining Spectisney World’s restaurant offers a variety of menu selections for every tourist in the park. While Spectisney World features many deliciously differ- ent ’’specialities, you'll also find an impressive selection of traditional fa- vorites. Delicious dining to please any taste or appetite is never far away when visiting Spectisney World. The park restaurant will not take reservations. Busy lunch hours may be avoided by having an early or late lunch (10:50 or 11:40 a.m.).__________________________________ Shopping You’ll find everything in Spectisney World from souvenirs to school sup- plies. jewelry to stuffed animals, color- ing books to nylons, and don’t forget that physical education uniforms (GYMSUITS) may all be purchased at the Spectisney World’s School Store. We suggest you shop in the early morn- ing or mid-afternoon to avoid busy “last minute” shopping conditions when the park is closing. Rather than carry your purchases throughout the entire day, you may wish to check them in our locker facilities. 1 3 Mainstreet USA 4 Everyday at 5 p.m. the SPECTISNEY’ WORLD Marching Band leads off the parade down Mainstreet USA Residents Of Spectisneyworld 5 WO LS Ticket Office Members of the class of '81 pose as they pre- pare to enter Tomor- rowland. Welcome To Spectisney World I am pleased to write this letter of greeting for the 1981 edition of the Spectator. This book has been the one common source of information about all past events which have been characteristic of Dallastown Area High school. The activities and people who are featured in this edition of the Spectator represent the many current ingredients of what is now known as Dallastown Area High School. The dedication, hard work, and pride which have made this yearbook possible are quite noteworthy. But most important- ly, the school is people. People who are proud of themselves and have a sincere desire to do their best work. This book will become increasingly more meaningful as the years go by. The faculty joins me in thanking you for the many fine experiences we have shared. Best wishes for the future to all who read this book. Kindest personal regards to all and best wishes to the Class of 1981. George W. W. As leaders of the student body, the Council promotes a variety of activities throughout the school year. In September a Welcome Back Dance was held with the ninth grade class as guests. The popular Homecoming Dance attained a record attendance of over 500 with Miss Nikki Wood crowned as the Queen. The Halloween Pumpkin Week Contest and the annual Talent Show highlighted Fall activi- ties. Winter activities included a Candy Cane Week, Christ- mas Dance, and a Bluegrass Dance. Spring activities that Student Council sponsored were the Kiss-A-Pig Contest, Carnation Day, and the annual Cinderella Dance. The council members as well as other members of the student body spent countless hours in preparation for host- ing the November, 1981 State-wide Conference of Pennsyl- vania Student Councils, to be held at Dallastown High School. A mascot, Willie the Walrus, was selected and used in promotion of the Conference. Student Council works on behalf of and in cooperation of the entire student body to achieve benefits for all students. Spectator Business Staff Front Row (I to rl: S. Keeny, 1). Koons. J. Grucza. I). Advisor, Mrs. McKnight; President. K. Becker The Dallastown Chapter of American Field Services (AFS) of 1980 - 1981 assembled early in the fall with much enthusiasm from the student body. Officers were elected and activities were planned. Monthly bake sales were held, a Christmas box raffle, a February Sock Hop, and Spring activities such as Slave Day and Spirit Week raised funds to support the club. Once again we hosted two Foreign Ex-change students. Mamen de la Torre visiting from Spain spent the year with Paula Deller and Julie Travia from Australia was hosted by Lisa Olphin. The money raised by the club helped to make their stay possible. The members and advisors of the AFS club were grateful for all the support given by the student body. The number of subscribers is approximately 500. Members of the staff work in both areas of writing and page layout: working on the paper staff gives the staff members preparation for the journalism field. Mr. Baldwin continues as the advisor to the Beacon staff. 24 The Sound Of Music This year's musical was the Sound of Music, one of this countries best loved musicals. It was performed on April 3rd and 4th, by students in the high school and for the first time this year students in the middle school. Middle school students were asked to participate in the cast this year because of the need for portrayal of small children. The theme of, the Sound of Music, centered around Maria, the lead character, and her involvement with the Von Trapp family. Maria goes to the Von Trapps to be governess to the six Von Trapp children. Many conflicts arise between Maria and the master of the house Captain Von 'Frapp. Inevitably, Maria and the Captain get married, and together they take the children across the boarder to escape from Nazi rule. The YCIAA champs over- powered last year’s rival, Spring Grove with a 5-2 victory. It was a senior starting lineup with four lettermen returning. They are John Briggs, Ron Her- man, Dan Nardontonia, and Jerry Weidner. Tory Harvey’s rookie year proved successful as he played Number Five man consis- tently. Briggs and Herman went undefeated individually while Dan Nardontonia went undefeat- ed for two consecutive years. Briggs and Herman saw a lot of District action as they advanced to quarter-finals before bowing out. A victory there would have sent them to States. Briggs was seeded first in York County and second in District III. Coach Pokopec commented that the team played as a cohesive unit and they really strived for a cham- pionship in their senior year. The Champs Boys’ Baseball “I thought I knew all the ways there were to lose a baseball game, but this year I learned a few more. We were a young club and hopefully learned from our mistakes,” says Coach Shoff at the close of the 1980 baseball season. The team was led by Ed Snyder in bitting a .375. Ed was selected to the All County 'leam. Ed Keeney, the second leading hitter, had a hitting average of .305. Other leaders were Leo Sullivan and Mike Gross in RBI’s with 9. In all, the team batting average was .241. This years team is looking forward to a new season with returning lettermen including Mike Schildt, Ed Snyder, John Gemmill, Ed Keeney, Tim Shearer, Leo Sullivan, and Mike Gross. Mr. Gerber is also looking forward to the new season with the improvement of the younger players in JV, who won 9 games and lost only 2 last season. VARSITY Back Row: S. Holtzapple, L. Sullivan, J. The 1980 Varsity Track season was somewhat of a disappointment to the ladies, who lost two of their six league meets, both in the last event of the meet. The men’s team lost four of their six, and were devastated by injuries and close defeats. They did manage to capture the field trophy at the Suburban Relays. On an individ- ual basis, it was an excellent year for broken records; New records set by the ladies are: C. Godfrey - Discus 102’6”; F. Ferree - Long Jump 17’ 1V4”, Triple Jump 37’; S. In every Varsity League meet he contributed four first places to Dallastown’s score in the high jump, long jump, triple jump, and high hurdles. He set school records in these events as follows: high jump 6’ 8 Vi”, long jump 22’, triple jump 47’ 5”, and high hurdles 14.5 sec. He was one of the four members of the boys’ team to go to districts, where he placed first in the high jump, second in the long and triple jumps, and fourth in the high hurdles. The team had hopes of a winning season and as it turned out they were surprisingly strong against their competi- tors. Despite the return of only two lettermen, the team racked up eight wins. This is the most wins ever achieved by any Dallastown Cross Country team. Senior letterman, Lance An- derson, along with Jim Koontz, also a letterman, led a perfectly, balanced squad that included Seniors; Chris Ernst, Blaine Fer- ree, Scott Snyder, Angie Thompson, Junior; Sue Kotek, and Freshmen; Clint Burkholder, Scott Hoffman, Eve Mcmenamy, Sara Siefken, and Jim Waldrup. Randy Myers, a senior, was the team Co-captain. Sue was the girls county champion and ad- vanced to state competition. The team had a slow start at 0-3. Coach Klingler credits the Co-captains for keeping a good team morale until the Wildcats rolled over eight of their last nine opponents. Every win was an outright team effort in which every runner did what he had to do. New school records were set by Sue Kotek and Lance Anderson, but all of the runners contributed equally. 48 (Left to Right) Coach, E. Williams. B. Zarfoss, J. Orwig, D. Deller. T. Bentzel, D. Losing three games by only one point and three in overtime, the record of seven wins and six losses does not sound very impressive, especially because it does not show the skill, pride, and determination possessed by the Varsity team throughout the season. Ending the season with a BIG BANG by beating Red Lion, whose record held only two losses, Coach Roller put much confi- dence in the senior class by starting Colette Besser, Tina Diehl, Jeannie Druck, Raren Fisher, Melissa Hendricks, Amy Shirey, Mollie Snyder, Bonnie Taylor, Michelle Walker, Julie Weidner, and junior, Tara Reeney as goalie. High scorer of the 1980 Field Hockey season was Paula Emen- heiser while Tina Diehl and Amy Shirey tied for second. Much praise must be given to the goalie, Tara Reeney, who stopped ninety-nine shots for goal and only allowed thirteen to score against her team. Voted by her teammates, Colette Besser was awarded Most Valuable Player of the season. jv jv Hockey JV JV This year’s Junior Varsity Field Hockey team consisted of many inexperienced players who saw little action last year. The season was a rebuilding year for the JV, because last year’s championship team had moved up to varsity. The team was comprised of a very spirited and talented group of players. Three of those players put their skills to the test and scored. They were junior, Laurie Righter; sophmore, Michelle Snyder; and freshman, Nita Stiles. The entire freshman class also saw a lot of action, hoping to gain playing experience. “The team showed real team- work and determination,” replied Coach Joni Oswald when asked about her second coaching season at Dallas- town. The 1980-81 season was no different as the Cats powered their way to a 14-0 league record and were undefeated in non-league competition. At the outset of the season, things looked pretty grim for the champs as they had only five returning lettermen and only three of which were seniors. They were consequently forced to rely on nine underclassmen to fill the lineup. The media didn’t even consider them in contention for the championship. But one must not forget the attitude of the Dallastown wrestlers. The team pulled together, worked hard, and when it came time for the matches, proved them- selves the champions they were by obliterating every opponent they faced. The Cats proved themselves champions early in the season by winning the Lower Dauphin Christmas Tournament, a feat never before accomplished by a Dallastown varsity team. Individual cham- pions in the tourney were Scott Dolmetsch, 105; Dave Gable, 126; Scott Fitz, 138; and Matt Bivin, 185. In dual meets no opposing team got within 19 points of the champs and a victory in the Sectional Tournament topped off the perfect season. Individual sectional champions were Gable, Bivin, Keith Folkenroth, and Dave Brenne- man, Hwt. Gable, Bivin, and Brenneman were also third place win- ners in the District Tournament. 63 Varsity Wrestling Champions L-R Row 1: Dave Gable. However, we will always be able to reflect upon the precious moments we have spent here and find that our senior year has been the most memorable. Starting ninth grade was a bi- zarre experience although we thought we knew it all. We still weren’t standing on solid ground entering tenth grade. Biology I was a unique experience in itself with the leaf collection and biology labs. Or- dering class rings was chaotic for us and the ring man, but it was one of the popular fads. The radiation leak at TMI brought fear into our lives, but we survived. Being juniors was better than the preceding years, but it just wasn’t the ultimate yet. Receiv- ing our class rings and getting them turned eighty-one times was really great because it broke up the monotony of the day. Ecstacy at last! We are finally seniors, but to most of us it didn’t seem any different, how- ever, to others, senioritis set in the first week. Writing senior pictures was a pain in the neck, but we sure did like getting them from other people. Our new scheduling had us some- what confused because some of us found that we had twelve gym classes in the same week. Our undefeated football season brought happiness to all of us and we will never forget beating Red Lion 31-16. Painting the water tower and tennis court hill brought thrills to those who didn’t get caught. Also we will never forget the band trip to Bermuda, our successful senior play, being on D.O., and Ronald Reagan’s election. Applying and getting accepted at college brightened our lives although we still had to graduate. It finally ended with our graduation in dune of 1981. Even though some of us may be miles away at college, we will always have the fond memories of the Dallastown Area High School. We are in Tomorrow Land and we hope to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow as we leave Spectisney World behind. Freshmen 1984 Homeroom 53; (1 to r) row 1: N. Bird, B. Ardison, M.
