Their intent was obvious, to battle boredom and frustration known only to students. The game portrays the only life they knew during the past four years, that life being of their existence in the hallowed halls of Dallastown High. The streets were named at random and any resemblence to people or situations here at Dallastown is totally accidentally on purpose. The first games were crude, handmade and known only to the Literary Staff. As the game grew in popularity, interest was aroused and sales boomed. The Literary Staff, unable to handle the great demand, arranged to have a larger company take over the manufacture and production of the game. Spectopoly is now published under license in 25 countries and in 15 common languages. Object: The object of Spectopoly is to successfully complete 8,000 term papers, 2.5 million book reports, 6.9 billion science labs, 83 million algebra reading problems, 82 million world culture handouts, 81 million vocabulary tests, 80 million physics problems, and ONE Practically Living course without going insane or become a manic - depressive, obsessive - compulsive, psychotic, paranoid schizophrenic with delusions of grandeur that studies too much! Equipment: The equipment consists of 1 school, 71 teachers, some 1500 odd playing pieces, 1 sequoia bark tablet, 1 number two (only!) pencil, and 1 blue book containing the rules and regulations of the game. Preparation: All game participants must have completed 5 years of potty training (known as elementary school) and 3 years of intense study (known as the Middle School) where players learn the English language (how to say the abe’s). Pre-algebra (how to count to ten), Astronomy (how to fall asleep with your head in an upright position), and how to play well with others at recess. It is invaluable that one have this well-versed background before even attempting to play Spectopoly. The Play: Starting at “Go”, a player begins as a chippy (very inexperienced player) and encoun- ters many fines, rewards, and tricks. A player at this time has very little knowledge and the only things that keep him on his trek around the board are his determination to become a sophomore and the guidance received from others. If a player survives this first street he turns the corner to become a sophomore and continues along his way towards the cherished “Senior Street”. As a player moves around the board, he is faced with the decision of participating in activities or not. Obstacles are also thrust in his way and a player’s ability to cope with these obstacles, assign- ments, and extra-curricular activities will determine his achievements and whether or not he wins in the end. Jail: A player lands in Jail when (1) he lands on the space marked “Go to Jail”, (2) he draws two tardy passes or (3) he sees double three days in a row. When a player is sent to Jail, he cannot conduct social life with players outside of Jail and regardless of where he is on the board, he must move directly to Jail. A player’s turn ends when he is sent to Jail. If a player is not sent to jail, but in the ordinary course of play lands on that space, he is “Just visiting Jail”, receives no penalty and moves ahead in the usual manner in his next turn. A player gets out of Jail by (1) sobering up, (2) using the “Get out of Jail free” card if he’s successful in stealing one, (3) purchasing a “get out of Jail free” card from another player who was successful in stealing one or (4) serving his allotted sentence. (Remember - even though a player is in Jail, he may conduct all his normal business transactions - homework!—) Free Parking: A player landing on this space does not receive any rewards or penalties of any kind unless he does not possess a parking sticker or is acting in such a way as to get sent to Jail. The favorite times to land on this space are from 7 to 8am and 3:05 to 3:30pm. Bankruptcy: A player is bankrupt when he owes more homework, time and dedication than he can pay. At this point he must drop out of the game and turn in all books to the school. Winning: The winners of the game are those who complete the entire 4 year path and are awarded diplomas for their effort. Winners end the game on the “Go” space and are challenged to begin on a second path towards new goals. Rules for a Short Game: Of course there are a few players that find a 4 year path unnecessary and are therefore eligible for the shortened version of Spectopoly. Those placed in this category play by basically the same rules except that they “Win” at the end of their junior year and continue on to their second path one year earlier. Players in this version include those of exceptionally high intelligence enrolled in the early graduation program. GOOD LUCK!!! CLASS OF ’83 The movie starts at 8 and I don’t have to be home until 11 ... That’s it - Just take the biggest piece! Oh no -1 think our braces are stuck together! Are these supposed to come off the pans? If you pinch me one more time, I’ll throw my food all over you! You’d look funny too if you had to wear these goggles all period. 6 TITLE DEED SESAME STREET RENT $2. 1 House i h 2 Hou With 3 House W.l th 4 Hq $ IQ S 2o 0. c ' Ou r a player owns ALL Color-Group, the reni U nimproved Lots in och WTWH «pc ° wjses 6 ihoi p) ec group. any on FRESHMEN A-E FRESHMEN Row 1 Left to right M. John Dol- metsch (V. Pres.) Eric Kern (Att. Off.) This year’s Student Council consists of 69 members who have been striving to expand and improve the activities and services that are tra- ditionally sponsored. The first event of the year, the Homecoming Dance will be remembered for its unique decorations and theme. As the year progressed the Donut Program was expanded to include more variety. Student Council also sells refreshments at all home basketball games and wrestling matches. This years activities consisted of a Carnation Day, Computer Dance, and a Cinderella Dance. These were all activities that had been tried in previous years. In addition to these activities, many new and different ones were introduced. A Halloween Dance and Spook House were attempted. The “First Annual Wildcat Run” was a joint effort that was sponsored by both Council and Varsity Club. Perhaps the most interesting new event of the year was the Bluegrass Dance, which fea- tured “John Farmer’s Poverty Band”. It might seem that all council does is hold dances etc .. ..actually there is much that coun- cil works on that is unrelated to this area. During the year the Constitution was again brought to a vote on its revision, the Dress Code was revised to change with the times, the library’s hours were extended, and the “Council Chronicals”, a a monthly newsletter, was started. Our council also won the position of District E Representa- tive, which involves representing some 170 schools in this area. We also hosted a Student Council Workshop that was attended by the York County schools. Student council’s main objective will always be the betterment of the school by working for the goals of the entire student body. 12 E X E C U T I V E C 0 u N C I L Executive Council, Front Row: (L to R) A. He had felt that the team had winning potential with six lettermen returning to the team. With a 3-4 record, the team fell short of their goals. In five of the games lost they had had a lead. The six returning lettermen: are: Scott Riddle, who made all-county; Craig Hess, Scott Lookingbill, John Kemper, Greg Plowman, and junior Rich Green, who was the leading hitter. Senior Greg Plowman led in the RBI’s and in homeruns. The JV team was undefeated this season, with Coach Gerber at the reins. He feels that the future of the program looks bright. Varsity: Front- E. CINDER BL The Wildcat track teams met the 1979 season with a few changes in their coaching crew. Mr. Raymond Geesey and Mr. Robert Schen- etzka, a former teacher of Ken- nard-Dale High School, assisted varsity coaches Mr. John Pitzer and Miss Donna Pasternak. Mr. William Zimmerman was assistant to Junior High coach Mr. Michael McWilliams. The boy’s varsity team had a dis- appointing league competition, but still managed to break five school records through individual and team effort. They also participated in the Elizabethtown Invitational, Shippensburg Invitational, Sonny Sheppard Relays and Suburban Relays. Tha girl’s team faired better plac- ing second, losing only to rival Red Lion. They broke four school re- cords and also participated in the Sonny Sheppard and Suburban Re- lays. Both teams sent participants to both the county and district meets. The Junior High track team had a tough season with all their meets ending in a close decision. Three out of the six were in their favor. They also sent participants to the Elizabethtown Invitational, Sonny Sheppard and Suburban Relays. Dallastown finished the season with a disappointing record of 4-4-2. After a fairly successful opening, with romping victories over Cumberland Valley and Vo-Tech, the team was stunned over the unexpected loss to Hanover. Regaining their confidence and composure, the wildcats put the Fighting Irish in their grave with a 13-0 victory. Dallastown faced their second loss to Spring Grove, a top contender in the league, the following week. Al- though suffering from two defeats, the mighty Wildcats stuck together to tie the Bulldogs 0-0. The final home game was played against York Suburban. After a fourth quarter Touch Down, Suburban defeated the Cats in an uneventful 0-7 game. This still did not tie the raging Cats down, they marched back with a victory over Central 29-0. The season closed with an upsetting loss to the neighboring rival, Red Lion. This years All-Star Defensive Team was re- presented by three fighting ’Cats—Rick Dover, Rick Oberdick, and Doug Starz. These 3 guys glus seniors Tim Clewell, Steve Trostle, Max Iberly, and Wayne Markel were the leaders of this years mighty Wildcat football team. 31 32 Kneeling- C. Hershner, R. Owens, C. All three losses were by only one goal and two went in to overtime. This was the first year Dallastown hosted a night game. Held at 7:00, the wild- cats defeated Red Lion 1-0 on the football field before a large crowd. Hanover proved to be another exciting game ending with a 3-1 victory for D-Town only after a penalty strokeoft. Cindy Godfrey was voted MVP for the season. This was also the first season for coach Anne Wilson. The team didn’t quite break even this year with its win-loss record of 4-6, but considering that it lost four of the five starters from last year, this record is more im- pressive than it appears. The closest match was against Hanover and was decided in a tie-break- er loss in second doubles. If York County tennis continues to improve at the pace it has set during the past five years, Dallastown’s girls will have their work cut out for them next year. The team should be more competitive next season since four of the five starters will return. All of the girls vying for positions on next year’s team have committed themselves to specific programs for improving, and they are eagerly anticipating a winning 1980 season. The team came into the season with high hopes, but injuries plagued it as varsity runners Tom McCarty and Scott Snyder were lost for most of the season. They finished with a 4-8 record, despite six returning run- ners. Senior letterman and four-year runner Joey Snyder led a young team that included juniors Lance Anderson and Randy Myers. Sophomores Bruce Wagner and Steve Land, freshmen Jim Koontz, Vince Deller, and Scott Longenecker, and seniors Steve Gunnet and Ed Yee fighting for top spots. Sue Kotek and Pam Wilshere were the female runners on the team. Kotek missed a chance at state competition but ranked fourth in the league among the girls. Cross Country is one of the most grueling sports and the runners put out all they had. When asked to comment. Coach Klingler felt the team had a lot of talent and did a super job in a tough league. All of the meets had been close and Klingler was not at all disappointed by their performance. He also stated that next year's team would need a lot of depth plus good front runners. 41 JUNIORS Winkin'. Blinkin' and Nod One slip of the finger and . . . The Junior High wildcats have once again proved their worth by completing yet another undefeated season. Under the leadership of Coach A1 Owens, the Jr. grapplers compiled an impressive 11-0 record. Coach Owens commented on the “well-balanced’' team he had this year and he marveled over the fact that “when the chips were down, there was always a complete team effort to pull them to the top.’’ Wrestling sensations Jim Contino and Mark Noll boasted undefeated records. The girls, who broke almost all school records, finished with a 10-2 record, with eight swimming and two diving district qualifiers. Coach Patty Moore summed up the season: “Enthusiasm, self-motivation, and the ability to endure long hours of hard work were the key ingredients for their success. Except for a few disappointing injuries and illnesses, the season’s goals were, for the most part, reached.’’ Girls’ Record: 10-2 Team Captains: Diane Da- howski, Maureen Sullivan District Swimmers: Kyra Becker Sandy Brown Diane Dahowski Maureen Sullivan Donna Deerin Beth Herman Lori Bupp Lisa Shearer District Divers: Kathy Munchel Amy Shirey row 1: Coach Ness. This was really an exciting season. The guys really put their hearts into it,” comment- ed Coach Lehr about their 14-7 season. The team proved their determination with four wins out of the first five games, only losing to West York. Southwestern ended the drive, beating Dallastown at home. The next game went to the Rockets in a fiery battle ending 47 - 50. Suffering from two consecutive losses, the Wildcats pulled together to win the next five games over Hanover, Eastern, Vo-Tech, Red Lion, and Susquehannock. The winning spurt was laid to rest when the Trojans of Y.S. stunned the still powerful ’cats in a 53 - 89 game. The ’Cats regained their stature to defeat Kennard-Dale the following game. The mighty Wildcats were roaring with energy as they faced the fighting Irish team. But to their disappointment, the Irish once again came out the victors. Dallastown later racked-up two wins over Eastern and Vo-Tech. The late starting Red Lion team left Dallastown with a victory, retaliating from their previous loss to Dallastown. In a close game, A1 Hevner laid up the final points in overtime to give Dallastown a triumphful and memorable victory over Susquehannock. Perhaps the most exciting game of the season was the powerful Y.S. Trojans. After previously being defeated, the energetic Cats demonstrated a skillful performance to win in an exciting double over-time game. This excitment eased as the mighty Wildcats showed KennardDale their stuff and knocked them down 74 - 57. The season ended with a hard fought battle between the Irish and the strong-willed Wildcats. With the final score of 39 - 34, the Y.C. Irish were victorious. The leading scorer for the ’79-80 season was Tory Harvey. Sharing the honor was leading rebounder, George Gladwin. Leading the team were starters A1 Hevner, Tory Harvey, George Gladwin, Ron Griffith, and A1 Martin. Other members include Richie Green, Jay Rexroth, Doug Striebig, Brian Fitz, Dave Jacobs, and Troy Hinkle. 65 Junior Varsity (clockwise) - M. Myers, S. Fitz, M. Shilling, C. Baugher, M. Schildt, J. Coach Gerber states that they were the quickest team he ever had. This quality was evident as the mighty cats went full steam to win their first 7 league games. Things slowed down as the Eastern (Knights) ended the cats reign as the unde- feated. It was during the following game that the cats soared back into action to blank the Vo-Tech Spar- tans. The energy and determination was showing at the Red Lion - Dallastown game. However, the Lions pulled out a victory in the closing minutes. The Sus- quehannock Warriors were prepared to scalp the cats but it turned out quite the opposite as the Cats proved too tough in the game. The York Suburban Trojans, York Catholic Irish, and Eastern Night- hawks added more victories to their column as they stunned the fierce J.V.’s, 39 - 46, 30 - 66, 44 - 46 respectively. However, the Cats regrouped and re- gained their composure and style to win four of the final six games, only losing to York Suburban and York Catholic. Sophomore Steve Fitz led the Wildcats in rebound- ing and scoring, while Sonny Sullivan racked in the best percentage of shots made. These two plus Gene Slattery, Dave Nicholson, Mike Schildt, and Gary Markey served as starting players. Also adding to the team were Joe Zero, Mike Schilling, Chris Baugher, and Randy Carter. 66 GIRLS BASKETBALL Row 1: P. Kraft. R. Givler Row 2: T. Keeney. A. Fantom. K. Fisher, P. Smith. A. Fetner. V. Their setbacks came from Central, Southwestern, York Suburban, and York Catholic. Strong points of the team were its depth and defensive abilities. Varsity starters included juniors Julie Weidner, Jane Weidner, Cindy Phillips, and Diane Blouse, and senior Cindi Mummert, along with co-captains Pattie Kraft and Roseanne Givler. They saw action in several night games this year. Reflecting back over the season coach Pip Henry commented, “Although we didn’t do as well as I had expected, I was pleased with the season. We'll certainly miss the seniors next year but will have a lot of good players back and are optimistic about the season.” J. Our next turn finally did come and with much relief we left the frustrated ranks of the inexpe- rienced to join the amateurs. The amateur knew the rules of the game and had played before, but needed more practice and finesse before he was seriously considered as a competitor. The best thing about being an amateur player was that you weren’t a bumbling beginner. Gaining ex- perience in anything takes a long time and it seemed forever before our next turn. After this next turn the realization hit us that we were actually human beings. We had now become semi-pro's of the game.Others looked up to us with admiration and respect. We had suf- fered long hard hours to get where we were and now it was paying off. The rank of Senior player now seemed for the first time within reach. At last our turn had come, the long awaited day when we would turn Senior players. All that anticipation and waiting and what did most of us feel - nothing. We felt the same. Nothing magi- cal happened, the major fact was that we had been changed from a half-witted beginner to an experienced player so gradually that it wasn’t noticeable. As Senior players we found the game easier and the object less challenging to us. As we looked at the game cover we noticed the rec- ommended grades for players was 9-12 and real- ized that we had grown too old for the game and now must move on to a more challenging one,the game of our futures. 80 My impression of Stevie Wonder The floor musketeers SENIORS OF 1980 She’s my friend and she takes Geritol every day Life’s hard when you’re on top Monday morning blues Wonder Woman saves the day He gave me a ticket, so I stole his hat Better than elevator shoes 82 See what cafeteria food does to you My mouth’s glued shut! MUSICAL MANOR GUYS N’ DOLLS Guys N Dolls, considered to be a “musical fable of Broadway,” was presented as this year’s All- School Musical. The musical was performed on March 27,28, and 29, by high school students from every grade under the direction of Mr. Jerry Yoder and Mr. Ronald Hill. The story centers around New York type characters of the 1940’s and involves two love stories. The first love story involves a big time gambler, Sky Masterson and a Salvation Army lass, Miss Sarah Brown. The two meet when Sky bets with a fellow gambler (Nathan Detroit) that he could persuade Miss Sarah to accompany him to Havana, Cuba for dinner. The second love story involves Nathan Detroit, a small-time operator of a floating crap game, and a night club dancer, Miss Adelaide. The two have been engaged for 14 years, but their nuptials have been constantly postponed due to Nathan’s crap game. The play concerns itself with the conflict between the free- spirited world of gambling and love and marriage. CAST Cast- S. Kerstetter - Sky Masterson J. Markey - Sarah Brown R. Eberly “We Shook the Family Tree” centers around Hildegarde Dolson and her struggle to find a date for the Prom. To her horror, her mother fixes her up with the banker’s son, “Short - Pants’’ Freddie Shermer. But Hildegarde, deter- mined to have a good time, tries to get Freddie to rebel against his parents' old-fashioned values. Finally, the two come to disregard what every- one thinks and they leave for the Prom, ready to spend a happy evening. 126 (row 1) L. Knopp, J. Kriedler, E. Kern, D. Hruz, J. Keeling, V. Krouse, M. Knisely JUNIOR PLAY Fun and fantasy combined to make Happy Daze, presented by the Class of 1980 as their junior play, one of the highest grossing junior plays in the history of Dallastown High School. The play centered around J.T. Springer, your average, ordinary, teenager who found it diffi- cult to relate to his family and friends. J.T., being of a highly imaginative nature found it easy to escape his problems by going into a world of his own making, set in the rock-n-roll Fifties, where he was accepted and admired by his friends and loved by his family, and especially by Melanie — the “love” in his life. The play was both humor- ous and serious at times, taking a well-rounded look at the life of a common, ordinary teenager. Row 1: V. Speers, M. Schiding, E. Kern. R. Winemiller. D. Hruz Row 2: S. Aides perform a variety of tasks: circulating materials, cover- ing, repairing, and shelving books, and assisting their fellow students. This effort enhances the over-all ser- vice of the library to the stu- dent body. The aides in turn benefit by gaining a new in- sight into their school li- brary and by increased self- esteem which comes from giving service to others. 1st row L to R: J. Leader, S. Wise. M. J. This book serves as a record ot the program, as well as the personal contributions of students and staff. Each edition of this book marks the culmination of another graduation class. This book will become increasingly more meaningful as the years pass by. As you read this book in the future, my sincere hope is that fond memories and appreciation of your brief time in Dallastown High will characterize your thoughts. This edition of the Spectator represents your school program for this school year. The faculty joins me in wishing all who share this book sincere best wishes for future success. It is our hope that in a real sense years spent in Dallastown Area High School were worthwhile and productive years. Kindest personal regards to all and best wishes to the members of the class of 1980. 140 r NOPQ _ SOME OF OUR FAVORITE SPECTOPOEY PRAYERS eighty STARTS IT ALL! We hope we were able to make their year both memorable and enjoyable, and wish them much luck in their fu- ture years. The 1979-1980 Dallastown Chapter of American Field Services (AFS) began with enthusiasim and interest, especial- ly among the underclassmen. Once again, the AFS club hosted two foreign exchange students, Maria Luz Raffo and Yumi Minegishi. Both lived with Dallastown students and their families. Our club was also honored with the membership of Alfons Jacobs, an ex- change stuaent from Belgium, who was previously unaware of the AFS pro- gram. Aside from showing these seniors the fellowship of students at DHS, the AFS club served as a social organization. Ac- tivities such as monthly bake sales, a Christman box raffle, and soc hops were used as both fund raisers to provide fi- nancial aid to Dallastown students go- ing abroad, and to provide more social activities for the entire student body. Other AFS sponsered activities includ- ed a secret buddy week, a Carnation day, an AFS weekend, Slave day and an AFS Fellowship Week. This years senior jazz artists include Mike Smith, Mark Henry, Merle Rutherford, Todd Sangrey, Jeff Gibble, John Clippinger, Beth Bude- sheim, and Steve Huska. The bands activities include performing in Hershey at a hockey game, playing at home football games, and pre- senting concerts in the lobby. More precious than gold, the laughter of friends. A soft array of affection, changing tears to joy. But look . . . tears. Tears of sorrow . . . tears not from the eyes. Where is the laughter? We need laughter. Instead there is a star, a morning star. Hearts cease to cry. Time passes, friends must part. Things are to remain within the heart. The love, faces and sweet laughter of friends. David was a member of the Dallastown Stu- dent Body during ninth grade. He was an active person who was very involved in swimming and football. While still living here, David decided to give up football and devote more time to swim- ming. His decision resulted in his attaining the school record in the 100 yard butterfly during his freshman year and established him as an impor- tant part of the swim team. In August of 1977, the Eagens moved to Atlan- ta, Georgia. David’s accomplishments at his new high school were outstanding, especially in the area of swimming. Although his new home and activities kept him busy, David’s ties to his friends in Dallastown remained strong. His last visit here was in August of 1978. On April 14, 1979, David lost his life in an automobile acci- dent. A student of Dallastown expressed his friend- ship with David this way ... “As I look back upon my high school years, there are many things which stand out in my mind as being special. However, when I think of those special times, I really think of the friends I was with more than the actual event. For, without these friends, those times would not have been so great. When thinking of my friends, the memory of their faces are always associated with the sound of their laugh. Each person has his own unique and individual laugh which reflects his personal- ity. Dave had a laugh that always made me laugh when I was near him. He was a beautiful person and a great friend never to be forgotten.” Merle Rutherford BOARDWALK 155 As you near the end of this year’s yearbook, it probably seems strange to have a page entitled “GO”. Actually it’s not all that strange. For un- derclassmen, the game of Spectopoly continues as they move ahead on the board. For seniors, the game of Spectopoly has ended as they be- come players in the larger game of Life. Many will choose a path to college, others will begin looking for jobs, but no one will be going back. Our high school years are so important in shap- ing our personalities, but at this point we must say good-bye to high school and hello to the real world awaiting us. A simple two lettered word is representing that step. We GO into the years after high school, we GO forward to further our education, or else we GO forward in finding an occupation and life to suit us. We may not stop and bring back the years at Dallastown High School but we may keep the memories and be thankful that we have them to keep. The Editors . c • . c'. . c'.. . i
