SOMETIMES, NOT OFTEN ENOUGH WE REFLECT UPON THE GOOD THINGS ... • CLASS OF 1972 CLASS MOTTO: We’d like to build a world of peace. I B. Morton Vice President. S. Butcher Treasurer. Mr. Smith Advisor, G. Buchanan Secretary. J. Innerst President. f ? CLASS FLOWER: Pink and Red Baby CLASS COLORS: Roses Burgundy and Pink 6 I'D LIKE TO TEACH THE WORLD TO SING (IN PERFECT HARMONY) I'd like to build the world a home And furnish it with love. Grow apple trees and honeybees. And snow-white turtle doves. I'd like to teach the world to sing In perfect harmony. I'd like to hold it in my arms And keep it company. I'd like to see the world for once All standin' hand in hand And hear them echo through the hills For peace throughout the land. It’s the real thing. What the world wants today. That’s the way it w ill stay With the real thing ... peace and love. It's the real thing. I'd like to leach the world to sing In perfect harmony, A song of peace that echoes on And never goes away. Put your hand in my hand. Let's begin today. With your hand in my hand. Help me find a way. I'd like to see the world walk tall. Hand in hand in hand .. And hear them echo through the hills For peace throughout the land. I'd like to teach the w orld to sing In perfect harmony. A song of peace that echoes on And never goes away. POEM: The w ars of today and tomorrow Are no different from yesterday’s; And the peoples and customs of yesteryear’s life Are the same, but they’re not here to stay. For the youth of today are quite different And although some may say we cause grief. Our main goal in life is to slay today’s strife And to build us a world full of peace. We won't always get what we’d like to. And we don’t always give what we can; But who is to judge us for what we've done wrong Or reward us for what we have gained? So you see. it's not always just what we have done. Or what we have started or ceased; It's what we'll have tried to achieve that adds up . All we want is a world full of peace. M. L. FOREIGN EXCHANGE iHola! This year Dallastown welcomed Miguel Liebana Martinez as our foreign exchange student. Miguel, a native of Madrid. Spain, is staying with Scott Sechrist and his family during his visit. Miguel has contributed quite a bit to life at Dal- lastown, including, among other things, his skill as a guitar player. We have all enjoyed having Miguel with us this year and hope he has enjoyed it. too. Good Luck. Miguel, from all of us here at Dallastown: we will surely miss you. When I was in Spain, my friends who made fun of my purpose and myself never thought I could come to the United States. It is normal, because to come to the United States is a wonderful and most of the limes an impossible dream. The idea that we have in Spain about the United States is a little different than the reality in some aspects, but life is very similar in both countries. To go to other countries has already been a very nice experience, but. I think, to live in that country, and to know the peoples lives, and customs is even nicer, f rom the day I came, my life was full of experiences, my trip on the plane, seeing New York and meeting my family. It is also true that I was a little afraid the first days because the English words I knew were very few. But I passed this difficulty, because very soon I realized the people were very friendly with me and that they were always trying to help. I don't know many other cities other than Dallastown. but I am really happy to be here. Before I came I thought the houses of Dal- lastown would be very high and together as they arc in Spain. But when I saw these houses I really liked them very much, so much that when I go back to Spain, I’m going to build one exactly like here. It was a wonderful experience for me to meet the young people girls as well as boys. Because they were so friendly. 1 didn't miss my friends over there. I enjoyed the parties very much; all are new for me. And then there is school. I remember the first time I saw’ it. I thought it was a college. It is so big and with so many modern things I couldn't believe it. I was really surprised to sec the many activities of the school, like the Homecoming dance. Operation Santa Claus, Senior F’lay, the chorus, the organizations of sports, and the cheerleaders. You must know that we don't have most of these activities in Spain. I have seen problems in Dallastown that I think all the United States has. But I want to say that Spain and every society in gener- al has the same problems. It is natural. But everybody can put a lit- tle effort forth to give a nice solution. Miguel and his American brother. Scott Scchrist. Miguel Martinez Studying is much the same no matter where you go. 55 AMERICANS ABROAD Hometown, Mulhcimandcr Ruhr Mur River, Graz. Austria Turkey. Switzerland, Costa Rica, and now Germany. These foreign countries have one thing in common. They served as homes for Dal- lastown’s foreign exchange students since the program was begun in 1967. On June 23, 1971. Georgia Buchanan traveled to Muhlheim, Germany where she stayed with the Hermesmeyer family for nine weeks. During her stay, Georgia had many interesting experi- ences including a gondola ride in Venice. Georgia was a fine representative of Dallas- town and the United State as well. The 1972 Spectator staff hopes the future AFS student(s) will continue to uphold this fine representation. Georgia Buchanan Saint Marcus Plazc. Venice. SPORTS CAN DI DS — 1971-1972 Them's fightin' words, partner!!! My feet arc killing me!!! IN MEMORIAM MR. GILBERT The yearbook staff would like to dedicate this section of the yearbook to Mr. Mervin Gilbert who passed away this summer. He was a quiet, sensitive man who pursued his ideals in his own way. Mr. Gilbert was unpretentious in his actions, yet he accomplished his goals just as effective- ly without any fanfare. A dedicated teacher, he was deeply interested in the education of his students and enjoyed working with them. Once a student showed a desire to learn, Mr. Gilbert would do anything in his power to help and encourage that student. All of us who took the time to know Mr. Gilbert came to love and respect him. We all share this loss of a fine person and teacher and will miss his presence here at Dallastown. 108 FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION . . . AND I THINK ABOUT THOSE PEOPLE WHO MEAN SO MUCH TO ME ... Dr. S. Ray Grimm. Jr. Superintendent A. Neil Harvey Assistant Principal Clair A. Trout Principal I was never more sincere than when during my opening day remarks in assembly last September I made reference to ‘my best friends while in high school. The friends about whom I spoke, with complete admiration, were my dad. my teachers, and my coach. You will recall that I expressed little concern for a generation gap since my dad and teachers and I had no communications problems they listened and I listened. They were impartial their thoughts and labor deserved recognition. Teachers today possess a greater concern for student individuality than ever before. In general, they arc better educated in the basic con- cepts of learning, arc more competent in their subject fields, and have a keener sensitivity to the varied need of students. Their major educa- tional objective is to help students develop skills of thinking and com- municating. Teaching is one of the highest forms of service. It is best exercised when it freely motivates others to a decision that is really theirs but which may never have been reached without the teacher's beneficial influence. I am convinced that our kids arc the greatest for they have learned to appreciate others recognize responsibilities develop the skills of thinking and rationalizing. I f there is a feeling that quality education takes place at Dallastown High School, let's express this appreciation to our parents, teachers, and those responsible for these opportunities. Congratulations to the class of 1972 upon your graduation from high school. Commencement is never the end: it is only the beginning. You are now leaving Dallastown Area High School. The instruction, the guidance and the assistance you received from your teachers and ad- ministrators goes with you. The success you achieve will in 3 measure be our success; likewise, the failures you encounter will be our heartaches, too. You will become more involved in a world that might not be of your choosing. You will in the next few years be the makers of your world and your children's world. This became your responsibility. The great- est contribution that any of you can bring to the w orld of your day is a lasting peace. This must start with a peace within you that will grow and glow. Two thousand years ago the formula of a new world and a better day were given to all of us by an angelic choir. May you have the courage, the vision and determination to bring that peace on earth and that good-will among men. Your life will be richer for having tried. no D. Smith: C. Bristcr: J. Davidson: D. Arnold; M. Myers; W. Hess: R. Kauffman: E. Shoemaker. Roger J. Reynolds Assistant Principal Looking back on our four years at Dallastown. we realize how much the teachers and administrators have added to our school life. Although there were many times when our opinions differed, we have grown in our understanding of ideas and learned to appreciate the value of an- other's view through these conflicts. We are indebted to many of the teachers for their invaluable guidance and assistance in class as well as in extracurricular activities. To the administration we would like to of- fer our sincere thanks and appreciation for the time and worry they have expended to enrich our scholastic programs and keep our school running smoothly. In future years we will come to understand the full w orth of all they have given us. Ill SCHOOL BOARD SEATED: M. Werner: D. Winner. STANDING: J. Rojahn: O. Statlcr. DE PA R TM ENT H EA DS SEATED: J.
