DOUGLAS SMITH-BUSINESS ADVISOR KATHY EBERLY-BUSINESS MANAGER PRESENTED BY THE SENIOR CLASS DALLASTOWN AREA HIGH SCHOOL DALLASTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA Try To Remember Try to remember the kind of September when life was slow and oh so mellow Try to remember the kind of September when grass was green and grain was yellow Try to remember the kind of September when you were a tender and callow fellow Try to remember and if you remember then follow, follow, follow. Try to remember when life was so tender that no one wept except the willow Try to remember the kind of September when love was an ember about to billow Try to remember and if you remember then follow, follow, follow. Deep in December it's nice to remember although you know the snow will follow Deep in December it's nice to remember the fire of September that made us mellow Deep in December our hearts should remember and follow, follow, follow. P.; Fred Bechtel, Pres.; Ruth Godfrey, Sec.; Ruth Marteny, Treas. CLASS SONG Words by Linda Bupp Music by Ned Strayer We, the class of sixty-eight, About to enter through the gate Of life and learning, trust, and truth. We leave behind our school and youth. We’ll always cherish the memories, though, As through this life we onward go, But always we must look ahead To greater heights as we've been led. We've learned so much the past few years As we look back with silent tears. Here we come, life, through your gate, We, the class of sixty-eight. CLASS ADVISOR: Mr. Douglas Smith CLASS MOTTO: It is not how much we have but how much we enjoy, that makes happiness. CLASS POEM When We've Left By Karen Moore For the future--when we've left--our destinies remain unknown. Will we wonder where we are, what we're doing, where we've gone? Perhaps we'll scan these pages and these words will be our own: We remember--don't forget us!--lor no matter what we've said, Even as our hearts arc living, so the mem'ries are not dead. Then we'll close this book and think of sunny paths we've ceased to tread. CLASS FLOWER: Daisy CLASS COLOR: Pale orange and cream 16 IN MEMORIAM McCRAESHRYOCK As we look back on the years spent at Dallastown, we cannot help but remember one who will not graduate with us. We, the class of 1968, dedicate this yearbook to the memory of McCrae Shryock, whose glowing personality and warm, friendly smile will never be forgotten. His enthusiasm toward education gave each of us the incentive to try a little harder. As the challenge of the adult world looms closer and closer, let us be willing to accept the responsibilities which we will soon be confronted with; let us honor and respect those qualities that were Mac's-- honesty, enthusiasm, loyalty, and sportsmanship; and let us strive to achieve the goals that would have been Mac's. 17 SUSAN H. Even though many games were played during inclement weather, the spirit was ever-present. When the regular season ended, Dallastown and Suburban were deadlocked with identical re- cords. The playoff game, held at Red Lion, was a thriller with Suburban claiming the lead in the third inning. The Wildcats came to tie it in the fifth. Subur- ban, however, was able to obtain another run to win the game and championship. Outstanding players on the team were pitchers Ted Frey, Larry Hildebrand, Phil Smith, fielder Keith Myers, and most valuable player, Joe Peters. Next year, as many team members will be re- turning, the coaches should be able to produce an- other victorious team. ROW 1: D. Kccncy; M. Riley; R. Myers; P. Smith; J. Peters; C. Sprcnkle; R. The girls were very enthusiastic throughout the season. Under Miss Arnold's capable guidance the girls almost had a winning season. Due to the fact that there were only four seniors on the team, there was a deficiency of team co-ordination. There were many sophomores on the team who had never played with the seniors. Since the sopho- mores and juniors gained much experience, next year's team should prove more successful. Special recognition belongs to Mary Anne Shirey, who won the most valuable player trophy. Mary Anne's in- tense competitive spirit was a great boost to the team. When most of these girls try out again for next year's team, they will bear with them the techniques of the game plus the ideals of sportsmanship. It was late in starting practice, which accounted for many of the early season defeats. However, after Coach Owen’s intensive training commenced, the meets became more competitive. The usual practices on the two and a half mile course were supplemented with arduous relays on the track. This practice did not net any victories this year, but it should produce wins next year when coupled with the more experienced runners. Under the guidance of rookie coach Kehr, the Dallastown Golf Team met with new hopes as the fellows hosted York Catholic in the first match of the season. However, these hopes dwindled as the Irish left credited with a win. As a matter of fact, Dallastown went down to defeat for the next five matches Then the golfers managed to find day- light and they recorded wins in three of the next four matches. With sophomores and juniors com- prising the team, there were bound to be mistakes simply due to lack of experience. Also with golf taking place in the fall, Coach Kehr, new to Dallas- town, had very little time to learn the weak points of each team member. Both the golfers and the Coach deserve sincere appreciation for their efforts. They also have the Dallastown students wishing them Good Luck for a high- scoring season next year. But they all agree that each was a chal- lenge and one which was eagerly undertaken. At the close of the season the entire team voted for most valuable player. The recipient was Jean Kopp who with her skill, agility, and spirit contributed greatly to the team. GRIDDERS UNDERGO REBUILDING A lack of experienced members accounted for Dallastown's losing football season. Despite the record, however, a number of players had admirable performances. Junior quarterback Mike Riley, being poised at all times, was able to call plays where the Wildcats gained valuable yardage. He passed the ball with the receivers being Fred Deller, Blaine Warner and Jerry Page. Ken Hoke and Ron Werner led the team with six and four in- terceptions respectively. The kick-off and punt returns were usually made by Ron Werner His agility and speed enabled him to compile a 7.6 yard average for his four punt returns. By a vote of the team members Fred Deller was the recipient of the Most Valuable Player trophy. It takes years to build a championship football team. It requires boys who have the willingness to undergo extensive practices and work-outs. Perhaps even more of a necessity is that of having dedicated coaches. Head Coach Mr. Orwig along with his assistants Mr. Reish, Mr. Jones, and Mr. Erwin will be returning next year to try to re- pair the weak spots and maintain and improve the strong characteristics of the Wildcats. The two teams strug- gled with Dallastown emerging the victors. The next game saw Red Lion become targets of another Wildcat onslaught. With Steve Or- wig as the playcaller this trend continued as the gridders went on to defeat York Suburban, North Hills, West York, and Spring Grove. These victories won the Junior High Championship for Dallastown. Other outstanding offensive players contributing to the team's success were Keith Hamberger, Jeff Bowman, Jay McWilliams, John Kearns, Dan Bortner, and Jeff Kohler. The defensive team in its entirity deserves a great deal of recognition. However, the most credit must be directed to Coaches Mr. Hendershot and Mr. Adams, who were both new to Dallastown’s football program. Since the junior high wrestling league lias been ini- tiated, Coach Bence's squad has never encountered a defeat. This year the championship was captured as the Junior Wildcats crushed their nearest rival, Dover, by a score of 41-0. This year provided convincing proof of the Champi- onship laurels at Dallastown. Two grapplers were able to complete the season with perfect records. They were Jeff Kohler in the 154 pound class and Jay Mc- Williams at 120 pounds. The pride that this team and coach has is a major factor of their success. Coach Bence is assured of continuing his dynasty next year with the upcoming seventh and eighth grades plus elementary pupils who are being taught the fundamental moves. Again this year the goals were set high and every member of the squad did his share in attaining the goals. Practices in the early part of the sea- son were filled with anxieties as each of the grapplers dieted and walked to lose their excess weight. Thoughts containing the rewards of success remained im- bedded in their minds each time they refused some tasty food. The loss of graduating seniors Gene Miller, Ed Adams, Gary McWilliams, Ed Rohrbaugh, and Tim Daugherty, all of whom compiled excellent individual re- cords, will be deeply felt in next year's squad. The coaches, however, already have boys in training who will fill these vacancies. Thus the impressive record of twenty- six consecutive victories was halted by the completion of the 1968 season, but hope- fully it will be lengthened next year and the following years. ROW 1: J. Although the won-loss record does not indicate it, there were numerous thrill-packed games. The first Eastern game was a close race in its entirity. It ended with Eastern snaring a victory by a one-point margin. Central’s five also provided the Dallastown team with some trouble. At half- time the Wildcat quintet sported a ten point advantage. However, the third quarter saw Central display her extra incentive and take over the lead. The Panthers eventually went on to capture the win. The first half of the Dover game was a scoreboard battle also. This time though, the mighty Wildcats managed to drub the Eagles. At times, all seemed to be lost; but the fighting Wildcats had the resiliency to bounce back and try again. Operation Santa Claus. Mr. Jones intently follows a Council discussion. Every group of people needs an efficient government to meet its needs and represent it. Dallastown's Student Council is organized in such a way that it might fulfill this function. The Executive Council consists of the officers and two elected representatives from each class. The larger body, the Representative Council, is composed of one representative from each homeroom. These representatives act as liaisons between the Council and the individual student, assuring that the student body remains well informed and also that the students' suggestions are brought before the Council. In this way, every student has a voice in the school's student government. Working with faculty advisor, Mr. George Jones, President Philip Briddell did an ex- cellent job of leading the Council and over- seeing the Council-sponsored projects. The annual student handbook, a refreshment stand at basketball games, the beautiful Homecoming week-end, a successful Opera- tion Santa Claus, and countless other activi- ties helped make 1968 one of the best years for student government at Dallastown. Hardy demonstrates his dancing ability. FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT It became a typical sight to see Hardy in the halls. By working after school hours, Hardy earned extra spending money. The Homecoming dance was a big event for Hardy. Jeff helped Hardy to study occasionally. Hartmut Kietzmann, our exchange student this year, is a native of Sennei, a picturesque town in northern West Germany. Hardy, as he is called by his classmates, spent the year at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Flinch - baugh and son Jeff, who is also a 1968 gradu- ate. Hardy is an active participant in many sports, including Dallastown's cross country team. Among his favorite sports are tennis, swimming, skiing, and soccer. A music enthusiast, Hardy enjoys listening to the Beach Boys and German classical music. Whether sitting attentively in a classroom or cheering for the Wildcats at a game, Hardy became an active member of the student body. Our third exchange student, Hardy has been preceded by students from Australia and the Philippines. Although the foreign exchange program at Dallastown is relatively new, it has nevertheless been quite successful. By enthusiastically supporting the program’s various drives, such as the sale of shares, the money jar , sock hops, and the annual student-faculty basketball game, the students at Dallastown made their visits possible. Our program has become so successful that next year one of our students, like Hardy, may have the opportunity to spend the year in a foreign country. 105 ROW 1: D. Fcrrcc, B. Fcnree, D. Mummert, C. Last spring the staff decided to attempt to make this year- book the best to date. Natural spreads for layouts, new photographic techniques, and the revision of the traditional format called for hundreds of effective photos, hours of layout planning, and large banks of informative writing. This progressive treatment re- quired more work than in any other previous year, and the staff gave unselfishly of their time and energy. Throughout the year, editor John Rossell and his assistant Carol Ganss planned pages, scheduled photographs from Mr. Blatner, and offered help to any staff member. Miss Yasenchak, the faculty advisor, helped them with any special problems that arose. Try to Remember was selected as the theme; it was carefully applied throughout the book by the staff. All in all, the yearbook was a demanding task, but the staff will have many enjoyable memories besides the ones that they preserved in the year- book. SPECTATOR Photography is an essential part of any year- book . BEACON If anyone lias an exciting news story, an in- teresting article, or any piece of information that might be of interest to the student body of Dallastown, the persons to see would be any of the reporters for the BEACON. Editor-in- chief Mary Dietz, and her staff of able edi- tors and reporters worked frantically to meet the deadlines eight times this year. Few page editors will ever forget the long but rewarding hours spent with faculty advisor Mrs. Brenda Deller as she urged them on to meet the dead- lines. Not waiting for news to be brought to them, Mary's roving reporters searched the halls of Dallastown, looking for news items of im- portance. However, news alone does not com- prise the BEACON. Also included are poems, stories, original writings, and sports. Com- bining these items into compact, informative, and interesting pages, the BEACON staff has made the 1968 BEACON one of Dallastown's finest newspapers ever. SPECTATOR BUSINESS STAFF Obtaining patrons, selling advertisements, and accounting for receipts kept the SPECTATOR Business Staff busy this year. Throughout Dallastown and surrounding areas, businesses and residents were called on to be patrons of or buy advertisements in the 1968 SPECTATOR. Under the guidance of faculty advisor Mr. Douglas Smith, the SPECTATOR Staff carried on a very successful one-day sale, posters were made by students in the seventh and eighth grades. As an added incentive for these students, prizes were given to the designers of three of the most original posters. Weeks before the sale these posters colorfully decorated the halls of Dallastown, reminding students to buy their SPECTATOR. Announcements were also made over the intercoms in both buildings. As a result of Business Manager Kathy Eberly and her staff's hard work and effort, this year's SPECTATOR staffs enjoyed one of the biggest and most success- ful sales ever. Equally busy throughout the year was the BEACON Business Staff. Under the guidance of Business Manager Jean Kopp and faculty advisor Mr. Douglas Smith, the staff worked hard to get advertisements and patrons for the BEACON. The Circulation Staff part of the Business Staff distributed the BEACON to each homeroom. Like the SPECTATOR Business Staff, the BEACON Business Staff also had a publicity cam- paign at the beginning of the year. Posters were put up throughout the halls announcing the sale and urging students to but the best Beacon ever. These two staffs, the BEACON and SPECTATOR Business Staffs, played an essential part in the successful publication of our school newspaper and yearbook. BEACON BUSINESS STAFF ROW 1: Mr. Smith, J. Zockoll, the Junior Band has become the basis for the Senior High Marching Band. Learning the techniques of marching, the band members, colorguard, and majorettes be- come acquainted with some of the numbers and routines the Senior Band uses so that they will have a solid basis for later years. The purchase of royal blue blazers for the band has proved the school’s interest and confi- dence in its members. The blaz- ers were presented to the school at the Spring Grove- Dallastown football game, the last one of the season. Mr. Richard E. Heller, president of Band Parents’ Club, presented them to Mr. Trout, and presi- dent of the school board, Mr. Robert Bruns. To show their thanks for the blazers, the junior high band wore them with pride as they participated in the half-time activities with the varsity band. BAND DIRECTOR: GLENN A. ZOCKOLL Hear the beat of the drums! See the flash of the brass! Whether at Homecoming or at any other football game, Dallastown fans listen for the familiar cadence and ex- pectantly look for the blue and white uniforms to flash by as the band proudly displays its marching abilities. Accompaning the band members are the high-stepping majorettes under the direction of Head Majorette Patti Chronister and the colorguard led by Sergeant-of-Arms Brenda Brown. Directed by Glen A. Zockoll, the band works hard to prepare the shows Dallastown fans enjoy at each game. One of the highlights of the season is the Homecoming game when the band performs its annual routine with lights. Whether at the New York World’s Fair, at its annaul concert, or marching in a local parade, the band has been a worthy ambassador of Dallastown Area High School. BAND COUNCIL ROW 1: N. Strayer, C. Chronister, Connie Fitz, Cathy Hivner, P. Chronister. Each Tuesday and Thursday night last summer the members of the color- guard came to school. Here Sergeant- of Arms Brenda Brown drilled her squad in the techniques of marching and new routines. They worked hard in order to be ready to march in the first football game of the season. Equally as busy were Dallastown's majorettes. Under the direction of Head Majorette Patti Chronister, these girls accompanied the band at every football game. They also performed in the band's annual concert. In addition to these two groups, the band front also included banner bearers Nancy Morrison and Susan Knaper. Leading the band, they proudly carried the banner of our school. COLORGUARD ROW 1: S. Knaper, B. Gregg. ROW 2: D. Morton, T. Ness, C. Zortman, C. Smith, L. Keener, J. Brown, S. Alexander, R. DIRECTOR: RONALD DIETZ Throughout the past years, Mr. Ronald Dietz has been developing an outstanding choral department. The four choral groups, the Girls Chorus, the Ninth Grade Chorus, the Junior High Chorus, and the Concert Choir work hard to strive for perfection in diction and tone. Comprised of seventy members, the Concert Choir, which is the main chorus, sings all kinds of music when performing at various churches, school assemblies, and choral concerts. Audiences, young and old alike, enjoy the music by the Concert Choir. Several members of the Concert Choir achieved special recognition this year, not only by making District Chorus, but later going on to place very high in Regional Chorus. These achievements along with the quality and sound produced reflects the ex- cellence of our choruses. OFFICERS M. Keeney, B. Anstinc, T. Copcnhcavcr, M. Saylor, F. Rice, B. Sel- lers, J. Mike Godfrey added to the success of the musical in his comical portrayal of KoKo. Last May, Dallastown’s music department staged The Mikado. The Gilbert and Sullivan show was considered one ol' the greatest productions ever performed in the school's history. Mr. Ronald Dietz directed the nearly one hundred member cast, with everyone involved spending many long hours and much de- dicated work. There also was much time spent doing behind- the-scene jobs as preparing the costumes, props, and the beauti- fully decorated stage. The acting and singing of Michael Godfrey, Greg Baum, Linda Russell, John Betlyon, Clifford Kraft, Charlene Mann, and many others will long be remembered by all who attended The Mikado. Crcg Baum, Nankipo, and Linda Russell, Yum Yum, find romance in the small town of Titipu. RALLY ROUND THE FLAG, BOYS Barb Ricse, portraying Comfort Cood- pasturc, shows her affection for Grady Metcalf, played by Dave Carton. Miss Gargasz, die director, was presented with flowers after the final performance. As juniors, the class of 1968 presented Rally 'Round the Flag, Boys by David Rogers. This play was the hu- morous story of what happened to the people of Putnam's Landing when a missile base moved in. Numerous pro- blems arose in the little New England town as the soldiers became friendly with the local girls--much to the dismay of their Puritanically-minded fathers. The fued between the United States Army and Putnam's Landing deepened as Maggie Larkin (the local school teacher) quarreled with her fiance, Lieutenant Guido DiMaggio. These two characters, portrayed by KarenAttig and Mark Kovacs, wended their way in and out of an intricate plot of light humor and slap- stick comedy. Naturally, all of the problems were solved in the end as Putnam's Landing developed a state of peaceful coexistance with her military invaders. Many hours were spent in preparing the play by the cast and its faculty advisor Miss Margaret Gargasz. Committee members spent much time making the scenery, getting the costumes and props ready, selecting ushers, selling tic- kets, and publicizing the play. It was all worth it when it is considered that the play averaged 134 laughs both nights. ROW 1: C. Gams, L. Lehman, S. Hoover, S. Ambrose, K. Attig, B. A ns tine, B. Riesc, J. Kopp, M. Marriott, M. The ladies of Putnam's Landing prepare the food for the annual Fourth of July picnic Mr. and Mrs. Bannerman, portrayed by Joel Rcigait and Becky Anstinc, disagree about the idea of having an army base at Putnam's Landing. Hengjt, N. Morrison, S. Ebcrly. ROW 2: B. Brown, B. Anstadt, C. Smith. The senior class presented a very different type of play this year. It was David and Lisa by James Reach. A serious and thought-provoking play, it was the story of two emotionally disturbed adolescents and their struggle for recovery. David, played by Cliff Kraft, was a boy who could not stand to be touched by anyone. Lisa, played by Kathy Eberly and Susan Alexander, was a girl caught between two conflicting per- sonalities, one being the personality of a small child and the other the personality of a person her own age. Taking place in a school for the emotionally disturbed, the play was centered around the lives of these two people and their classmates. By the use of frequent black-outs the audi- ence was transported rapidly from the classroom to Dr. Alan Swinford's office to David's room and back again. In sharp contrast with most of the plays that have been per- formed at Dallastown, David and Lisa was a shockingly re- alistic play about our modern society. The production of such a play required much time and hard work. This work was ably accomplished by the cast and its faculty advisor Miss Margaret Gargasz and her student teacher Mrs. Kauffman. Aided by the committee members, these people to produce an effective production worked toge- ther. Could this be a member of die cast fifteen minutes before the play? Lisa encounters trouble. 125 HOMECOMING November 1 and -4 was the weekend of Dallastown's Homecoming for 1907. Among the activities planned lor Homecoming week- end were the annual football game, the Homecoming dance, and most important of all. the selection of this year’s Homecoming queen. The six candidates nominated for Home- coming queen were first presented to the student body at an outdoor assemble. Then, on Friday night, the candidates were once again presented, this time at our football game against Suburban's Trojans. Looking lovely and radiant, these girls, along with the eighth grade princesses selected by the students in the junior high building, rode past the spectators and were then escorted to seats in the bleachers where they watched the football game. The highlight of the Homecoming week- end occurred on Saturday evening when the candidates, accompanied by their escorts, were presented for the final time. In the beautifully decorated gym the tension mounted as the time approached for the announcement of our 1967 Homecoming Queen. Finally the moment arrived.
