MRS. SYLVIA LANDIS literary advisor RANDI STINE editor-in-chief JOHN COFFEY assistant editor CHARLES LANDIS business advisor DONALD THOMAS II business manager PRESENTED BY THE 1967 SENIOR CLASS FOREWORD Sailing for New Horizons America --where vast opportunities await human touch. Amidst the nervous bustle of this modern world, we, the graduating class of 1967, leave our ports of youth to sail the strange new sea of adulthood, where boundless destinations await our choice. Our ships carefully constructed, we are prepared for our journeys. Today we lift the anchor of the past; we plot our courses in view of new horizons; tomorrow we sail into the future. With this in mind, the yearbook staff presents the 1967 SPECTATOR, hoping that future journeys will be more pleasant as we recall this memorable part of our past. Remove us from this chasm. Teach us world; fill our heads with All that mankind fills your soul. We are unknowing, but we want to know. Take our hands and guide us. Pamela Sprcnkle Listen world, hear our child-like plea that Beckons you to give us pity. We are hollow; show us your Right-and-wrong, your love-and-hate. Make clear; define emotions. Accept us world; you who would transform us Must now at last abide us. Yes, we were nothing, but now we are everything-- Everything to you . . . CLASS FLOWER: Baby Roses CLASS COLORS: Navy Blue and White CLASS MOTTO: Everyday is worth living. CLASS OFFICERS: SEATED: Barbara Lowe, Sec.; Vicki Clatfelter, Treas. STANDING: John Betlyon, V. CLASS SONG By: Sharon Bachman, John Betlyon, Michael Godfrey Now as we set upon the world For the years we spent with thee, D-town, To use what thou hast taught us, The doors of truth to open, The memories of those treasui ed years Were years of toil and great success Shall never fade from in us. ’Midst thought our minds have woven. 16 Michael Abel Janice Alexander Donald Alwine Georgia Ambrose Thomas Anderson Margaret Anstadt Sharon Bachman Dennis Baer Sherry Baker Joseph Barry Gregory Baum Betty Beck E. In the breezy yet sunny September air. President Scott Gibbs took his oath of office. The entire student body looked on the ceremony from the football bleachers. Scott became a familiar figure on the stage as he introduced the many dignitaries and as- sembly programs. He put new ideas into ac- tion: and, advised by George W. W . Jones and Mrs. Joanne Anderson, he and his Council made Dallastown government the voice of the students. The Council, both the executive and repre- sentative branches, proved its vital school role as it completed the traditional handbook, planned the Homecoming weekend, and con- ducted Operation Santa Claus. Successfully completing another year of the foreign ex- change program, the Council began plans for the next year. The school term of 1966 once again displayed that Student Council is an es- sential pan of school life. Serving as a uniting tie between Administration and students, these students made our school a true example of democracy in action. VICE-PRESIDENT FRF.D BECHTEL 76 Executive Council ROW 1: D. COUNCIL Representative Council 77 Girme Mana go Foreign Exchange Program After a successful year with our foreign exchange program, the Dallastown Area High School Student Council decided to continue the enriching program. After weeks of prepara- tion, countless jars of donated coins, and a lively faculty-student basketball game, the Council acquired enough funds to finance a foreign student for the 1966 school year. Anxiously Girme Manago's classmates awaited her first words as she stepped to the microphone on the first day of school. Her gracefulness and soft-spoken gentleness im- pressed us as she spoke of her homeland in Manila, Philippines. Later, she delighted her classmates with her renditioning of a native pole dance, and she warmed our hearts with her happy face when she rode in the parade as an honorary member of the Homecoming Court. In the future, those of us who know her well, will recall her bright eyes and sparkling smile. Her brief visit with us will be a cher- ished memory. 78 ROW 1: P. Sprenkle, P. Cunnct, S. Rost, D. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Founded to promote scholastic merit, the Dallas Imperial Chapter of the National Honor Society inducts pupils chosen by faculty mem- bers and former Honor Society members. Candidates display scholarship, leadership, character, and service: the Society accepts only the well-rounded individual. The senior Honor group of '66-67 consisted of twenty-three members inducted in their ju- nior year. Deborah Bortner presided over the Society and Pamela Sprenkle took the post of vice-president: Linda Russell served as sec- retary. Guided by P. Lynn Henry, the members en- joyed study halls converted into free periods. The students could enter any classroom, uti- lize the library, walk the school's surround- ing grounds, or study as a group in the skull room. These unsupervised periods enriched as well as rewarded these exceptional students. 79 ROW 1: B. Hershncr, R. Knapp, S. Lowe, M. Anstadt, C. Freed, C. Forbes, B. Delanccy, G. Luppo, P. Sprenkle, V. Days of hard work and slighted rest and meals earned a re- ward of a full house both nights of the per- formance. The stage set for merry ol' England, the play cast donned their British accents and lurched into the bawdy humor of lusty old En- gland. Ben Blouse and Rita Kulp portrayed the notorious young lovers, Tom Jones and Sophie Western. Good laughs and moments of trial ensued; with a climatic finale Tom was saved from thedeath penalty, and he and Sophie were joined in the holy bonds of matrimony . . . and all lived happily ever after, except Blifil, of course. Much of the play's success was due to the acting direction which Mrs. Ann Groome gave to the cast. Only the participants in the play can appreciate the part that she and the play committees contributed to the success of the play. But all who saw Tom Jones will re- member this outstanding production. Faculty Director Mrs. Groome 80 81 ROW 1: R. Sprenkle, V. Gladfclter, R. Kulp, S. Sprenkle, P. Anstadt, B. Thompson. ROW 2: S. SENIOR PLAY Faculty Director Mrs. Groome Laughter and excitement enveloped the au- dience as the curtain rose on the November 1966 presentation of Pillow Talk at Dallas- town Area High School. Under the direction of Mrs. AnnGroome, the light, romantic comedy proved an entertaining evening for young and old alike--refreshing humor with added spice and flavor. For weeks the play cast toiled under pres- sure to meet their deadline performance. The stage and lighting crew, publicity, prop, make- up, tickets, and ushering committees all col- laborated with the director and her assistants Georgette Freed and Pam Sprenkle to bring about smoothly-running rehearsals and effec- tive results. Practice hours ran late, but the lead ac- tress and actor, Vicki Glatfelter and Ted Sny- der, never tired of their humorous portrayals as an exciting female interior decorator and a popular bachelor. The connection between the two, a disturbing party-telephone line, finally brought them in close contact--the result: a rather stormy romance with a surprising cli- mactic f ini sh. The long hours of strained prepa- ration proved their worth on the actual eves of performance when the profits were plenty and the empty seats few. 83 HOMECOMING 1966 84 Miss Debra Eshelman Miss Carol Forbes Miss Barbara Lowe L I ' mv Miss Rita Kulp Once again the festivities of Homecoming dominatedthe minds of students at Dallastown. The cold of early winter was forgotten as eight lovely senior girls and their escorts were in- troduced; the girls must wait until the follow- ing night at the Homecoming Dance to learn which one of them would reign as queen. Just as charming were the Junior High princesses and Dallastown's own foreign exchange stu- dent, an honorary member of the Court. Finally Saturday evening arrived, and with it came an air of enchanting excitement . . . the procession of the Court . . . Vicki Glat- felter's receiving the title of First Runner-up . . . and that final announcement . . . Miss Debra Eshelman, Homecoming Queen 1966. With accompanists and officers assisting, Mr. Dietz secures top performances from these various groups. Accompanists for the groups in- clude Michael Godfrey and Jan Folkenroth, Concert Choir; Linda Lentz and Ann Cleaver, Girls’ Chorus; and Vicki Myers and Elizabeth Smith, Ninth Grade Chorus. Rigorous practice schedules result in annual concerts at school and local churches, assemblies, radio and television appearances, and the highly successful yearly operetta. Audi- ences greatly enjoyed the spring operetta '66, Victor Herbert's The Fortune Teller. Representatives in the District Chorus include Linda Rus- sell, Linda Shirey, and Pam Flinchbaugh, sopranos; Charlene Mann, alto; Gregory Baum, tenor; and John Betlyon, bass. Working together to make use of the gift of song, these groups enrich the extracurricular activities at Dallastown as they bring credit to the school and the community. director: Ronald Dietz Madrigal Chorus ROW I: T. BAND Students walking through the halls near the auditorium are often greeted by swelling strains of music coming from the direction of the nearby bandroom. Those entrancing sounds are from the Dallastown Area High School Marching Band. Well-known throughout the community is this group of students who spend their time in unselfish and successful attempts to create worthy musical notes and measures. For the past year under the direction of Glenn A. Zockoll, the band has performed and marched in routines for the spectators at foot- ball games, in parades, and in concerts. Their effect is nerve-tingling; their result: high prof- its and ''packed audiences. Long hours of practice under the combined directions of drum majorette Susan Alexander and Mr. Zockoll have resulted in approval and appreciation by audiences. All the work and energy put into this organization is not lost; it emerges from the instrumentsof each member to merge as one great sound of music. 90 Color Guard ROW 1: N. Morrison, S. BEACON The noise of interviews . . . revisions and write-ups. . . the snapping of a flashbulb . . . the clatter of a typewriter . . . the hustle and bustle as all rushed frantically to meet their deadline--all these are fond and familiar memories of the BEACON Literary Staff. Faculty sponsor Mrs. Brenda Deller and Editor-in-chief Joanne Zumbrun aided and di- rected the members of the staff. Results were fine pieces of literature, news items, and en- tertaining bits of gossip and jokes about D- town's campus. The Business Staff, under the management of Douglas Smith and student managers Jean Kopp and June Wagner, managed to keep ad- vertisements going out and subscriptions com- ing in. Together with the SPECTATOR Busi- ness Staff the school newspaper and yearbook had another highly successful season at DAHS. Business Staff TABLE: Mr. Smith, J. Kopp, J. Wagner. ROW 2; S. Miller, B. SPECTATOR Members of the SPECTATOR Literary Staff compiled memories of the class of '67 and preserved them in our yearbook. Editor-in- chief Randi Stine and Assistant Editor John Coffey supervised an eager staff of writers, photographers, and section editors. The staff selected Sailing On to New Horizons as their theme and staff advisor, Mrs. Sylvia Landis, approved their choice. The staff compiled a fine copy of the SPECTATOR. While the literary people chewedthcir nails over deadlines, the Business Staff existed in a world of patrons, advertisements, receipts, and financial records. Under the guidance of Mr. Charles Landis local businesses were so- licited for advertisements, and patrons were sought. This source of money enabled the staff to meet financial responsibilities involved with selling the SPECTATOR. Business Staff ROW 1: D. Lutz, D. Thomas, S. Sprenklc. ROW 2: L. Gccscy, G. Nissley, F. Home of Famous Names in Furniture The end of the beginning! A lot of work goes into earning a diploma. Your name on one indicates a measure of achievement of which you can feel proud. But a diploma is only a milestone—a mea- surement of what you have done. Now... how about doing something with it? For example, what are your plans for fur- thering your education? If that isn’t possible, then how about looking for a job with a company for whom you can work as beneficially as you worked for your diploma? Personal effort is the essence of success— the key to your progress. That precious piece of paper you receive graduation day can help you unlock a bright future—as bright as you strive to make it. May your future be a fine one! CATERPILLAR An Equal Opportunity Employer 147 ALMA MATER Upon a pleasant hillside Stands one we love so true Our loyalty, oh High School To t hee, we p ledge a new.
