T=OKW RYE T Tomorrow . . . the World SPECTATOR ’66 Literary Advisor — Miss Sylvia liott Editor-in-Chief — Nancy Moyer Assistant Editor — Linda Ciccarelli Business Advisor — Charles G. Landis, Jr. Business Manager — Judy Barley Presented by the 1966 Senior Class, Dallastown Area High School, Dallastown, Pennsylvania. DALLASTOWN AREA HIGH SCHOOL Foreword Tomorrow the world with its tribulations and opportunities receives us -- the seniorsof Dallastown Area High School. As graduating seniors, we now feel that we know what we arc, but we do not know what we may some day become. Hesitantly yet enthusiastically, we anticipate assuming our roles in a world of explosive changes, competition, and invention. Our world is a complex and progressive one; it is not the horse -and- buggy world of our grandparents. Jets fly passengers across the United States in a matter of hours; telephones allow us to communicate with any country in the world; highways and automobiles transport us at amazingly fast rates of speed; and automation frees us from the tedious jobs that occupied so much of our ancestors' time. But with this progress we experience the same type of complexity that recently confronted New York when its electrical system failed and the city remained indarkness for several hours. This massive power failure once again reminded us that machinery can never completely replace man. With this in mind, we have prepared ourselves to become teachers and ministers, parents ajxl doctors, clerks and scientists, mechanics and engineers. Our friends and ourpast activities, our teachers and our high school studies have recorded priceless memories on our minds. With the bursting of a flashbulb and the clattering of a press, the SPKCTATOR Staff has captured some of these joys so that we may cherish and recall our past experiences. As we occasionally review this book, may it inspire us to make the world of tomorrow an even greater realm of existence. 2 1. Administration 6 Faculty ............. Darlene Warner, John Knox 2. Supervising Principal Board of Education S. RAY GRIMM, JR. England has its Parliament; the United States has its Con- gress; and Dallastov.m has its Board of Education. Dallas- town's School Board, headed by Thomas Smith, controls the educational system and supervises improvements in the school system. Members of the Board are elected to their positions by the community in which they serve. Directly responsible to this governing body are individual men who supervise affairs within the school system. The Supervising Principal, S. Ray Grimm, Jr., has charge of planning, organizing, and directing the joint schools' edu- cational program. Mr. Grimm is responsible for interviewing and hiring new teachers and observing and evaluating teacher performance. To assist him, Ralph N. McSherry serves as Administrative Assistant and Carl Glatfelter serves as Business Manager. Dallastown Area High School is more directly supervised by High School Principal Clair A. Trout, who directs edu- cation and Faculty. His authority encompasses both the se- nior and junior high, but he in turn gets assistance from As- sistant Principal Clay E. Givler in the senior high and Robert H. Hays in the junior high. Both of these men are in charge of student scheduling, school discipline, anti student activi- ties. Curriculum Coordinator Joseph Rojahn works with Mr. Trout to set up standards for courses of study, which serve as guidelines for teachers. He constantly revises the curriculum to provide students with recent information. Working together, these men and women serve the com- munity, Faculty, and students well. Because of their efforts, Dallastown Area High School provides abundant opportunities for the many individuals whom these Administrators govern. 10 Principal Assist a n t Principa I CLAIR A. A beginning is to be forsaken. The goal is won; forget the pain. A victor never counts his losses. Forget it friend; it’s done -- We were children then. This beginning is to be forever. We can begin to live but once; We can never start again! This beginning is for men -- Are we children still? 22 LINDA JEAN ADAMS GREGORY A . With guiding hands they urged us on To climb in life to greater height. The light from past experience Guides our footsteps in the right. We say good!)ye to days of youth And go to face life's trying tests, And with the strength they gave to us We'll search to find success. These treasured years at Dallastown Within each heart have firmly fixed Fond memories of our high school And the Class of Sixty-Six”! 44 Gee. I really need a shave. With the help of faculty advisers Larry F. Cisncy and Miss Ann Wcyant, Morris did a splendid job of heading both branchesof the Council -- the Executive Council and the Represen- tative Council. The active Council handled these projects: the traditional hand- book, several assemblies, morning devotions, and music in the cafe- teria. Council members planned tire Homecoming festivities, ROW 1: C. Warner, M. Shryock, T. Shirey, M. Barshinger, S. Smith, R. Hamm, C. Miller, D. Bortner. ROW 2: R. Stein. C. Blouse, D. Ferree, D. It again conducted Operation Santa Claus and added another goodwill project, Mail-Call Vietnam. The Council completed the foreign exchange program and began plans for next year. On March 31 the Council hosted approximately 300 students from 75 schools for the Annual Pennsylvania Southern Dis- trict Student Council. During an active and successful year, the Stu- dent Council promoted a more efficient and more enjoyable school life as it gave the student body a voice in its government. The Council had suc- ceeded in selling enough shares of stocks to finance the first foreign exchange stu- dent; then the American Field Service placed her at Dallastown. Eagerly, the student lx dy waited on the first day of school to hear Rosalind Bonnette from Sydney, Australia, tell her impressions of America. Happiness and love shone on her face as she thanked her hosts and host family, Dr. and Mrs. Richard Heller. The American way of life fascinated her. As students learned to know her. they felt the warmth of her personality. All were proud when she became an honorary memberof the Homecoming Court. They admired her for her portrayal of Madge in the Senior Play; but most of all, they were happy to have known tire energetic Rosalind. 60 ROW 1: C. Dehoff, D. Ciuonistcr, J. Hcltzcl, T. Shircy. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Jeffrey Thomas, past president of the National Honor Society, acted as the judge in a mock trial which was held to install this year's members of the National Honor Soci- ety. The witnesses, Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service, the four traits needed to become a Society member, testified in behalf of the defense. The jury, made up of last year's members, found the new candi- dates guilty of these four qualities, and the prosecut- ing attorney called the defendants to the stage. Each of the defendants received a sentence of membership in the National Honor Society. The new members were granted honor passes, which entitled them to free periods or unassigned study halLs. Linda Garrett became the new president, and P. Lynn Henry replaced the past faculty adviser Mrs. Mary Hollo- way, who lias retired from teaching. The Dallas Imperial Chapter of the National Honor So- ciety annually inducts eligible students; fifteen per cent of the senior class and ten per cent of the junior class arc possible candidates for the Society. After students become scholastically eligible, faculty members rate them in other areas; these ratings arc reviewed by a faculty com- mittee, and the members are selected on the basis of their fulfillment of requirements for membership. 61 HOMECOMING Sandra Butcher Rosalind Bonnettc Royalty mixed with rain and a smashing Wildcat football victory over the Trojans of Suburban t hen tire eleven members of Dallas- town's Homecoming Court rode past the crowded bleachers. Not one of tire eight senior girls knew which one of them would reign at the Homecoming Dance the following evening, but all looked radiant as they smiled at the spectators. Equally lovely were the junior high princesses and our foreign exchange student, an honorary member of the Court. Karen Weaver Karen Rider Her Excellence Tamara Sh i re y Linda Garrett COURT - 1965 At last Saturday evening arrived. Student Council had decorated the gymnasium with a goal post wrapped in alternating blue and white streamers; white cloths on small tables further enhanced the decorations. Slowly the alumni, students, and faculty gathered, and the ceremony began. Faculty Adviser Larry F. Cisney introduced each member of the Court; only one candidate remained. With the blast of a trumpet, Tamara Shirey rose to accept her crown and cape. She was Dallastown's 1965 Homecoming Queen. BEACON Literary Staff Revisions . . . deadlines . . . galleys . . . trips to the printer -- all were familiar words to members of the BEACON Literary Staff as they gathered news for the school newspaper. Mrs. Brenda Deller, faculty sponsor, never realized that so much work went into a newspaper. But she had confidence in JoAnn Heltzel, Editor-in-Chief and occasional photographer. Assistant Editor Jenny Jansen always had her notepad ready for news about student activities and students. Problems were nu- merous, but the Staff persevered and students received eight exciting issues of the BEACON during the year. 66 ROW 1: Mr. Thomas. L. Ciccarclli. N. Moyer, Miss Hott. ROW 2: K. Bigger and Better than Before, Buy a BEACON, read only a few of the tag lines which the staffs had devised to sell more newspapers and yearbooks. Because of student sales and patronage from local busi- nesses, the school was able to finance the publications. But the actual managers were Douglas Smith, BEACON Business Staff Manager, and Charles Landis, SPECTATOR Risiness Staff Manager. To assist these two faculty mem- bers, student managers Cheryl Moore and Judy Barley and their staffs volunteered many hours of service. These groups include the Concert Choir, com- posed of 53 selected members from the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades, the Ninth Grade Chorus, also com- posed of selected students, and the Girls' Chorus, made up of senior high school giris who chose chorus as an elec- tive. In addition, Joseph Campanella conducts a select group of students in the Junior High Chorus. Accompanistsforthcsc groups arc Pamela Smith, Con- cert Choir; Jann Folkenroth, Ninth Grade Chorus; and Diann Leiby and Cheryl Heller, Girls' Chorus. Some of the accomplishmentsof the various groups are assemblies, concerts in local churches, a Christmas con- cert, tire annual VocalNight of Music, and various ap- pearances on television and radio. Also the groups take part in the District and Regional Chorus. This year John Betlyon, bass; Cheryl Moore, alto; Jody Snider, alto; Tammy Shircy, second soprano; and Margaret Sechrist, first soprano, participated; they represented Dallastown at Millersville in March. Only because of the combination of many hours of re- hearsal and the capable leadership of Ronald Dietz, along with the co-operation of the officers, accompanists, and the members of the choruses, arc these groups ready to bring to the public some of the finest music. Dallastown can be proud of the many accomplishments of these sing- ing groups. Director — Ronald Dietz Senior Concert Choir ROW 1: R Strayer, C. Geiselman, P. Leiby, S. Bachman, C. Heller, G. Last spring on May 10 and 11, 1965, the Band visited the New York World's Fair to play at the Tiparillo Band Pavilion on a warm Monday afternoon. After the performance the marchers rushed to the New Mexico Pavilion to play for dedication ceremonies. As a token of appreciation, the Governor of New Mexico sent scach band member a key chain. At Dallastown in the fall the Band drilled, getting ready for half-time shows during football games. Drum majorette Susan Alexander led the Band in its routines, which Richard Powell directed. The Band marched in several local parades and won first place in the Red Lion Halloween Parade. The mem- bers also marched in the York Halloween Parade. In January band members welcomed Glenn A. Zockoll, the new Band Director, who continued to drill the partici- pants. hi the spring he also directed the Band Concert. For its hand work and continuous practice, the Dallas- town Band has drawn favorable comments; much credit is due to Richard Powell, past Band Director, and to Glenn Zockoll, the present Band Director. JUNIOR PLAY CAST On April 3, 1965, the curtain came down on the sec- ond and final performance of the junior class play The Curious Savage by John Patrick. Under the direction of WalterVogelsong, the cast, stage crew, and various com- mittees worked extremely hard to be rewarded by success in both performances. Li an unforgettable role. Fae Matthew portrayed a lonely old woman who thwarted the plans of her greedy step-children who attempted to lay their hands on her money by having her committed to a home for the men- tally disturbed. A merry chase ensued asdic Savages tried to track down the money, only to discover that inmate Jenny Jansen had burned the teddy bear that held the money. But in the final act Mrs. Savage recovered her fortune and said goodbye to her strange, yet contented, friends at die asylum. 78 H ■ 79 ROW 1: J. Hcltzcl, J. Jansen. R. Bonnettc, O. Hess, D. Reginald Rose's The Remarkable Incident at Canon Comers proved to be a remarkable incident at Dallastown Area High Softool when Miss Margaret Cargasz directed a twenty-six member cast and produced an extraordinary play with a serious theme. Unfortunately, the audience couldn't see the students and faculty members behind the curtains. Stage crews, prop committees, make-up committees, a lighting crew, ushers, a publicity committee, and ticket takers worked vigorously to produce an entertaining play. Linda Cic- carelli, student director, shared some of the responsibility with Miss Cargasz, who was grateful for the assistance from both Linda and Domra Chronister. Faculty member Alfred Waltemyer co-ordinated the nu- merous committees. Much planning and much skill combined to present this stimulating plot. The mock trial, which took place in a high school auditorium simi- lar to Dallastown's, held the audience in suspense as Dallastown actors walked down the aisles and assumed tire roles of parents and students of Carson Comers in 1950. Incited bythe accidental death of a classmate, students called the accused to court to tty to find out who had murdered Billy McGinnis. Was the janitor responsible because he had failed to re- pair the fire escape landing, or was the building inspector at fault for not condemning the building? Had the overworked doctor neglected his duty when he refused the telephone call, or did the druggist cause Billy's death when lie moved the body? If Mr. McGinnis had nailed that final brace to the landing fifteen years before, would Billy still be living? Slowly the blame fell on not one individual but on all of these men who had neglected their duties to their fellowmen. As the curtain fell on the final performance on November 20. 1965, the cast knew that the hours of practice and discipline were worth the effort. Reward came with joys and tears, curtain calls and applause. A remarkable incident had taken place in Dallastown's auditorium also. 80 81 SPORTS ROW 1: K. Guerin, P. Jones, D. Sipc, K. Myers, J. ALMA MATER Upon a pleasant hillside Stands one we love so true. Our loyalty, oh High School To thee we pledge anew. Where'er our paths may lead us, Our praise to thee will sound. Forever we'll be faithful. We love thee, our Dallastown, We love thee, dear Dallastown. Though lonely and discouraged Or tried by care and pain, One thought of thee inspires us Our courage to regain. For still thy clinging memories Within our hearts abound To bind us to our High School Forever, dear Dallastown, We love thee, dear Dallastown. 148
