SPECTATOR ’ Miss Sylvia L. Hott literary advisor Leslie Grossman editor-in-chief Carolyn Turner assistant editor Mr. Charles Landis business advisor William Payne business manager Presented by the Senior Class Dallastown Area High School Dallastown, Pennsylvania DALLASTOWN AREA HIGH SCHOOL FOREWORD The Spectator Staff Administration and Faculty ........................... 4 Seniors............................................... 14 Activities............................................50 Sports................................................78 Although words are not the senior play and printers’ ink is not the first football game of the season, we hope that this yearbook will recall to your mind the activities, studies, and friends which influenced your days at Dallastown. With words and pictures we have tried to record those events which have made our school days memorable. You hold in your hands memories and reminders of past experiences. Review them, cherish them, relive them; use them as stepping stones to a satisfying future. Underclassmen ................................ 100 Advertisements and Patrons 2 124 MiWiWiWtmWiWiWSWtWiWiWiWiWSWiWSWtWSWiWiWiWii MEMORIAM As we think of 1965, our graduation year, we re- member a classmate who will not be graduated with us. We dedicate this yearbook to the memory of Greg Moore whose warm personality made class ac- tivities more fun, whose enthusiasm made the search for knowledge more enticing. As we leave Dallastown, let us accept the challenge to make this world a better home for all; let us strive to achieve those noble objectives which would have been Greg’s; let us fashion a nation, a world which magnifies those aims. 3 ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY BOARD OF EDUCATION SEATED: A. Brenneman; C. Shearer (Treas.); D. Root (Pres.): T. Smith (V.P.); M. Myers (Sec.); E. Adams. STANDING: N. Kessler; C. Warner; J Kohler; P. Rojahn; W. Hess; R. Bruns; E. Shearer; R. Smith. MR. S. RAY GRIMM, JR. SUPERVISING PRINCIPAL Building character is one of the many responsibili- ties of education. Reputation is what our parents and teachers think us to be, but character is what our friends and God know us to be. A well-rounded individual will have a character that shines even in the darkest moments; a well-educated individual should possess this attribute. Reputations may come and go, but char- acter stays with us forever. It is my sincere wish that we have succeeded in help- ing each of our students with his and her character de- velopment, for it is so vital to future success and happi- ness. As you continue through life, I would encourage you to put your emphasis on character rather than on reputation, upon the significance of the individual and upon a purpose for life. The character you build will be your very own; cherish it. Mr. McSherry ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT and Mr. Glatfelter BUSINESS MANAGER 6 SECRETARIES SEATED: V. Saylor; M. Landis; I. Gib- son. STANDING: C. Harvey; M. Krecker; L. Saylor. MR. CLAIR A. TROUT PRINCIPAL John Diebold, an international leader in the fields of management and technology, coined the word automa- tion and stated it this way: We have yet to perceive the magnitude and the true nature of the momentous change automation is affecting in our lives, in our busi- ness, and in our society. We are living in an age when today’s youth will need to learn during his productive years three different oc- cupations, many of which are now nonexistent. With these conditions how can we prepare and graduate stu- dents from our educational institutions with confidence that they will master the future? To be sure, no answers presently exist, but fortu- nately some rays of light shine through this complex problem. If a person remains flexible, he will be able to adapt himself to this continuous and rapid change. The fundamental human qualities he possesses such as im- agination, volition, purposefulness, compassion, and love will, I am sure, help him achieve happiness and success. An eagle placed in captivity with chickens will begin to act like a chicken. Although it was not meant to be that way, failure to be what it could have been made it become something less than it should have been. Un- fortunately this situation sometimes occurs with peo- ple, for they too often become less than they were in- tended because they choose the low road instead of the high road. It is our earnest concern for you as you are graduated that you set your goal high, leaving the lower level of action to that for which it was created. Days like these need clear thinkers, straight walkers, and noble doers. Be what your Creator intended you to be, and the future will be a happy, glorious experience for you. Our wishes for a successful future go with you as you be- come alumni of Dallastown Area High School. MR. CLAY E. GIVLER ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL SENIOR HIGH ENGLISH JUNIOR HIGH ENGLISH SEATED: P. Did you ever have peanut butter stuck on the roof of your mouth? And now for my coffee break. Cool, calm, and dry. It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s superman. Yes, sir, Mr. Trout. ACTIVITIES President — Dennis Gable STUDENT COUNCIL Under the direction of Mrs. Mary Waltman and Larry Cisney the Student Council, com- posed of the Executive Council members and one representative from each homeroom, gave the student body a voice in its government, for each home room representative in turn in- formed his electors of the topics discussed at the meetings. Several members-at-large con- tributed ideas which had been presented at con- ferences. In a September assembly officers and members took their oaths of office, and Dennis Gable officially began his term as President of the Student Council. Projects handled by this year's Council in- cluded the traditional handbook and a student directory. Council members planned and par- ticipated in sock hops and Homecoming festivi- ties. Operation Santa Claus, a project shared by the school and community, was a successful goodwill project. With serious planning and in- vestigation, the Council has done the ground work for a proposed exchange student next year. The various meetings and activities of this year have given each student an opportunity to govern himself. Treasurer — James Flinchbaugh Vice President — Carroll Warner EXECUTIVE COUNCIL ROW 1 — L. Citizenship, scholarship, leadership, and service — these four traits qualify a student for membership in the National Honor Society. At a September assem- bly the Guidance Department conducted installation of officers and recognized the elected members. Jeffrey Thomas presided over the Society, which performed service activities, introduced speakers at College Night, and acted as guides on Parents’ Night. Senior society members had an opportunity to experience the freedom they will encounter in college because of free periods, study halls with no assigned room, granted to them by the Administration. 54 FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA ROW 1 — Mr. Good; L. Members of the Spectator literary staff compiled memories of the class of ‘65 and preserved them in our yearbook. Editor-in-chief Leslie Grossman and assistant editor Carolyn Turner supervised a hard-working force of penmen, artists, and photographers. In May of 1964, seniors selected burgundy and white as class colors, and chose carnation as the flower. After Miss Sylvia Hott, staff advisor, approved the theme “Light on the Future, the literary staff compiled the Spectator. 58 SPECTATOR BUSINESS STAFF ROW 1 — M. Zumbrum; B. Payne; M. Sprenkle; Mr. Landis. ROW 2 — C. Snyder; K. Zuch; N. Keiser; L. Keiser; N. McLaughlin; D. MacArthur. ROW 3 — J. Hess; J. Hartman; J. Hare; L. Kling. For several months Charles Landis, faculty advisor, William Payne, student manager, and the Spectator business staff lived in a world of patrons, adver- tisers, receipts, and financial records. The members solicited local businesses for advertisements and conducted the practice of patronage. With the donation of a dollar a patron had his name printed in the yearbook; this enabled the staff to meet financial obligations and involved parents and members of the com- munity in yearbook production. Then she and her court retired to re- served seats to watch Dallastown play football against West York. Decorated as a medieval castle, the gymnasium was the scene of the annual dance. Following Lynne's coronation there by last year’s queen, Bonnie Mil- ler, everyone enjoyed dancing to the music of the Sunlight Serenaders. JUNIOR CLASS PLAY When the final curtain fell on the Saturday night per- formance of “The Mouse That Roared,” the cast, crews, and committees knew that everyone had been repaid for his hours of work. Faculty director Charles Hackenberry had instructed, pleaded with, screamed at, and hurled playbooks toward a gray-haired profes- sor, a queen and her court, and football players in tights and tunics. But the final product was success as Queen Gloriana, monarch of the tiny European country of Fenwick, declared war on the United States. Gloriana and her court, faced with the problem of being an insig- nificant country, rose to world power as a fantastic plot unfurled. 72 ROW 1: J. Gable, T. Zortman, H. Koontz, J. Buchanan, C. Set in the crumbling Lon- some Valley schoolhouse, the play combined realistic dia- logue, an effective setting, and live” folk music to produce an evening financially as well as dramatically successful. The autobiography of Jesse Stuart, a Kentuckian who fought for his education, was the basis for the play; at the age of eighteen Jesse began his career as a teacher. In his struggle to educate the children of the hills, he encoun- tered stubborn opposition to the spread of knowledge. But Jesse learned to respect the people’s determination and to channel it toward his own high goals. 74 Faculty Director — Miss Gargasz 75 ASSEMBLIES CANDIDS 77 v’ I I' SldOdS 1st: J. Flinchbaugh, S.
