enodato Mr. Larrimore Anderson Carole Sieling Joanne Freed David Lange Advisor Editor-in-Chief Assistant Editor Business Manager Presented by the Senior Class Dallastown Area High School Dallastown, Pennsylvania FOREWORD Between the covers of this Spectator we hope to capture a year of wonderful memories for both the Seniors of '64 and all of the many other students of Dallastown Area High School. If this book serves to bridge the past and to bring to mind the price- less memories of joy and pleasures of the past year, it will have served its purpose. There are many people we would like to thank for their tireless efforts which made this book possible. With these thoughts, we proudly present to you, the students, your 1964 Spectator. The Spectator Staff CONTENTS Administration ...................................................... 4 Seniors ........................................................ 14 Activities................................................. 48 Sports................................................ 78 Underclassmen .................................. 100 Patrons ................................... 118 2 IN MEMORIAM MR. 8. RAY GRIMM, JR. SUPERVISING PRINCIPAL Napoleon always denied most vigorously that he was a victim of circumstances. Why, I make my own circumstances, he is quoted in saying. Everyone of us has the power to change himself into a better, more successful individual. If we sin- cerely try and if we use the brain that God gave us, we will succeed. A small lizard called a chameleon, reflects the color of its surroundings. Individuals often act like chameleons — bad, if placed in a bad environment, or good, if they chance to be surrounded by good. However, human beings, unlike the chameleon, can change their environment. A good personality can improve his environment. We are not a slave to environment, but we have the power to alter it. School life has taught us to do more than just reflect our environment. Improving our surroundings, recognizing good and having faith in others will most certainly insure personal success for each of us. BOARD OF EDUCATION ROW 1 — Clair Shearer, Treasurer; Erwin Shearer, President; Mrs. Dorothy Roof, Vice President; Merlin Myors, Secretary. ROW 2 — Norman Reber, Kenneth Heindel, Thomas Smith, Jesse Kohler, Edwin Adams, Rodger Smith, Lawrence Hartman. 6 MR. CLAIR A. TROUT PRINCIPAL Most of you, at some time I am sure, arose before the sun and saw darkness turn to daylight. No matter how often I see this it still fascinates and challenges me. Here is a new be- ginning, a new day when the black is replaced by white. This pretty clearly represents life. We trust that in the years you spent with us you might have received some light to dis- pel darkness,- some knowledge to change ignorance,- some courage to overcome cowardice,- and, some hope to drive out despair. We trust that as you leave us you will continue to grow in the light and goodness of day so that as you ap- proach the sunset it too may be as lovely and as challenging as the light of a new day. MR. CLAY E. GIVLER ASSIQTANT PRINCIPAL Congratulations to each senior who has received a diploma signifying that he has satisfactorily fulfilled the graduation requirements of this school! Your years spent here can be likened to the laying of a foundation for a building. Just as a building cannot exist v ithout an adequate base, so I feel a high school education is the foundation for a successful endeavor in your adult lives. Do not be satisfied with mediocrity but continue to build and shape your life so that eventually you will find peace in knowing that you have given your very best to mankind. 7 Mr. McSherry Administrative Assistant Mr. Glatfelter Business Manager Go get 'em Charlie! 1$ she reading your composition? SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS CLA88 Mono Our interest is in the future; because the rest of our lives there. CLA88 FLOWER White Rose CLA88 COLORS 41 :'re going to spend Brown and Tan CLASS HISTORY As graduating Seniors we now find ourselves filled with enthusiasm about our plans for the future, those designs for our lives that have been determined for so long and are finally facing us. Some of us will go to colleges, some to technical schools, and others directly to that life long job. Even though our thoughts are of the future at this time, we do have a notable history which is worthy of our reflection and will serve to remind us of our school days at Dallastown. In our freshman year, with Mr. Bingaman and Mrs. Richardson as advisors, we plunged into high school life. We began the year by electing officers: Bonna Zuch, president; Carole Sieling, vice-president; Donna Ness, secretary; Lona Ness, treasurer; and Keith Holfzapple and Terry Sipe, executive council. The Thanksgiving Day Assembly was the only activity of the year that is worthy of mention. The school term progressed smoothly, and we soon found ourselves enjoying summer vacation. We returned to school in the fall, then sophomores, ready to begin another school term. Under the supervision of Mr. Zortman, we held elections for the class offices of the new year: Bonna Zuch and Carole Sieling were re-elected as president and vice- president, respectively; Dave Root, secretary; Jean Blessing, treasurer,- and Sam Jamison and Jeff Snyder, executive council. That year we took charge of the Easter Assembly and for a class activity we held a record hop. The year passed rapidly, and we soon began our summer vacation. As juniors we returned to school, eager to begin the important year. With Mr. Landis as our advisor, we elected Jean Blessing, president; Jeff Snyder, vice-president; Susan Williams, secretary,- Pat Reber, treasurer,- and Gloria Miller and Carol Lowe, executive council. The Junior Play director, Mr. Jerald Garland, chose Sabrina Fair to be pre- sented in April. The play, as well as our Christmas Assembly and all occasion night entitled Swinging Safari, was a great success. With a certain feeling of accomplish- ment, we concluded the school term. When September came, we, the Seniors of our school, entered the halls for our final year of school life. Mr. Landis again advised us as we were led through the term by our class officers: Jeff Snyder, president; Jay Smith, vice-president; Jean Blessing, secretary,- Larry Ludwig, treasurer,- and Terry Grove and Phil Eppley, executive council. We chose the white rose as our class flower, brown and tan as our class colors, and the following as our class motto: Our interest is in the future,- because we're going to spend the rest of our lives there! Besides our class officers, other Seniors held impor- tant positions throughout the school: Pat Reber, Beacon editor,- Carole Sieling, Spectator editor,- Jan Lookingbill, Student Council president,- Carol Lowe, Student Council secretary,- and Phil Eppley, Student Council treasurer. Miss Bonnie Miller reigned over the Home- coming Game and Dance, which was held early in November. Later that month, with Mr. Charles Hackenberry as director, the Senior Play, The Diary of Anne Frank, was presented. The play, as well as our Easter Assembly, was another credit to our class. Our fun-filled class trip to New York City was our final activity as a Senior class. Our graduating year at our Alma Mater concluded with Baccalaureate on May 31, and Commencement on June 5. Since our class is the first to be graduated after completing all six grades at Dallas- town, we have a closer bond with our school, an institution which has prepared us for the life of an adult. We are now going to face that mature society and to make a mark, however large or small, on our world. 42 CLASS SONG WORDS AND MUSIC BY KEITH HEINDEL m 1 — 1 ■—j -- - j—-— —j V 1 — — J ’ ©w we. +he W ii Jl o • «- SH ♦ - J f.ji-4 ■ , 1 .1— T-=h= 1 -- j. 4ear old dal- gy „ ■ tbwn, ouv - if —-i- i- ■ i - mcnor - i 2 s we .shall —ri—- P3- f -■ ■ . , ' a __i Z11M. -J t T F'' F • J 43 TRAVEL AND TIME - SPENT Six years' travel in one building, Gaining? Six years' time in one building. Time spent. Time gained or time lost? Who knows? If time is gained, is knowledge lost? If time is lost, is knowledge gained? Who can say? What's a thousand more colories? Here he comes again! Those poor little mice! YEAR AI On September 14, in Aberdeen, South Dakota, a most unusual event occurred. Mrs. Mary Ann Fisher, thirty year old wife of a midwestern farmer, gave birth to five children. The chances were fifty-four million to one that the quintuplet birth would occur, but all five, four girls and one boy, survived. The Catholic world elected Giovanni Battista Monfini, Cardinal Archbishop of Milan, to the posi- tion of Pope. The new reigning Pope Paul VI sur- prised the world by announcing that he would visit the Holy Land during the month of January, 1964. No other Pope has set foot outside Italy since 1812, and no other reigning pontiff visited the Holy Land since the days of St. Peter. Civil rights seemed to be a major issue of this year. Civil rights was the subject of many public speeches, magazine articles, editorials, legislative efforts, and demonstrations. Four young girls were killed when a Negro church was bombed in Birmingham, Ala- bama. All the demonstrations and talk seemed to culminate when thousands of people, both Negro and white, marched to Washington in August, 1963. The leaders of the march later conferred with govern- ment officials. President John F. Kennedy died at approximately 1 p.m. Central Standard Time here in Dallas. He died of a gunshot wound in the brain. These words were uttered by a press aide on November 22, 1963, the day our President was killed. The shock which covered the world cannot be measured. The Presi- AtLASTOWN AREA HIGH SCHOOL GLANCE ent's assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, was also assassi- ated, adding to the drama of the weekend. The ciousness of the killing perhaps exemplifies our nanging world. Dallastown Area High School re- efed in many ways. Stunned students watched our ag being lowered to halfmast and then paid hom- ge to the deceased President by closing school the blowing Monday. In February of 1963, a group of evaluators from prious states, gathered at Dallastown Area High chool to evaluate the school according to their andard of the ideal achievement that could be sached, using the present physical aspects and off. They submitted a final evaluation report several onths later. This final evaluation seemed strong and ncouraging, but motivated several improvements to le high school. Renovations included an addition the football stadium, sound-proof partition be- veen the shops, outdoor lights, and teachers' mail- oxes. At the end of the 1962-63 term, Dallastown Area igh School saw its front lawn being torn up by uge earth-moving machines. The construction of a uilding to educate seventh and eight grade school lildren had begun. Gradually it grew from a gap- ig hole to a steel skeleton, and from a steel skeleton a brick building. The building, completed by Au- ust, 1964, has its own cafeteria, gymnasium, and iwage system. - k Jar hr A C T I V I T I E S f 8TUDEN The school government of Dallastown Area Hig School is headed by a body known as the Student Cour cil. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Organized to promote scholastic merit, the Dallas Imperial Chapter of the National Honor Society inducts its new members at its annual installation assembly. These members are chosen on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character, and service by a faculty com- mittee. Fifteen percent of the Senior Class and ten percent of the Junior Class is eligible for membership. This year the administration has given free periods to the society members. Taking the place of study halls, this unsupervised time enables the students to listen to other classes, to study in groups, and to improve study habits by realizing the importance of spending time wisely. 53 Jeon Blowing Carol Lowe Linda Ferree Gloria Miller Kay Keeney 54 L HOMECOMING On November 2, 1963, Dallastown Area High School celebrated its annual Homecoming Day with the usual festivities of a football game followed by a dance. Preceding the fierce battle between the Dallastown Wildcats and the West York Bulldogs, the six Home- coming candidates were paraded before a large crowd of spectators. Following the game Miss Bonnie Miller was crowned queen at the annual Homecoming Dance by Miss Susan Hess, last year's Homecoming queen. 56 ROW 1 — Philip Epplcy, Ronald Chronister, Margaret taucks, Gary Miller, Lowell Markey, William Wuttke. JUNIOR CLAQS PLAY Sabrina Fair was presented on April 4 and 6, 1963. Under the direction of Jerald Garland, the play cast depicted the story of a chauffeur's daughter who is returning to her home on Long Island Sound after spending five years in Europe. The plot proceeds as Sabrina experiences a romance with the son of the wealthy Mr. Larrabee. The publicity for this play included an appearance on a local television station. Much satisfaction was gained by all participants in the production of the play. 58 ROW 1 — Margaret laucks, Jeff Dehoff, Ellen McDowell. SENIOR CLASS PLAY Charles Hackonberry Director The Senior Class presented The Diary of Anne Frank on November 2) and 23, 1963. This two act play was directed by Charles Hackenberry. The setting of the play is the top floors of a warehouse in Amster- dam, Holland, during the years of World War II. The story involves two Jewish families, the Franks and the Van Doans, who are forced into hiding in order to escape persecution. Much time was spent by the cast and play com- mittees in the production of a successful class play. 60 MUSICAL ORGANIZATIONS CHORUS BAND The Senior Concert Choir, accompanied by Michael Carl and under the very capable direction of Ronald L. Dietz, performs in several concerts and assemblies dur- ing the school year. Besides doing a Christmas Concert and a Spring Concert at the school, the Chorus also sings at various churches in the area. The Chorus does music from the ancient classical through various per- iods of composition up to the latest publications, as well as good folk music and better popular selections. Gary Miller, Judy Hare, and Bill Blymire represented Dallas- town in the District Chorus. Gary and Judy also repre- sented us in the Regional Chorus. There are two other choruses of which our school can be proud — the Jun- ior Select Chorus accompanied by Michael Godfrey and Sharon Bachman and composed of selected voices from the Junior High School, and the Girls' Chorus ac- companied by Pam Smith, a new organization this year composed of all girls who chose Chorus as an elective. All three groups, directed by Mr. Dietz, work hard to bring to the public some of the finest music of all types. Our Band is an organization of which we can be very proud. It is under the direction of Richard E. Pow- ell and three student directors, Michael Carl, Jeff Con- way, and Gerry Geesey. The band plays for all foot- ball games, participates in many local parades, does an assembly program for school and a Spring Concert for the public. The band has won many cash prizes and trophies for its performances in various parades. Last year they participated in the Apple Blossom Parade in Winchester, Va. and won third prize trophy in this national competition, with an invitation to return this year. The band and band front received two trophies in statewide competition in the Annual Downtown Harris- burg Merchant's Parade Contest. They also won top honors and cash prizes in the Dover and Hanover Hal- loween Parades. This was the first band to win first prize in the Hanover parade for three consecutive years. We congratulate our band for its hard work and creditable performances. SENIOR CONCERT CHOIR At piano - M. Carl. ROW 1 - I. Bowman, M. Zumbron, D. J. Snyder, R. Weaver, R. Lentz, J. Fetcko, M. With guidance and encourage- ment from Mr. Anderson and Mr. Trout, the yearbook staff worked together to produce a book that would be a lasting reminder of the year 1963-1964. The book contains a glimpse of the major school activities, the organizations, the sports, the faculty, the underclassmen, and the seniors. Often there were fran- tic last minute meetings necessary to meet deadlines, but all the work and effort proved itself well spent in producing a successful edition of the Spectator. 70 'he business staff of the Spectator under the super- vision of Mr. Landis faithfully transacted all the business matters necessary for publishing a yearbook. In order to secure an income sufficient to cover all expenses of the annual, they sold subscriptions and pro- cured advertisements and patrons. The staff's work. however, was not completed at this stage. They still had to distribute the books to the subscribers. Their work, perhaps not visible in the actual print of the Spectator, was indispensable for the completion of the book. SPECTATOR BUSINESS STAFF ROW 1. It enables these young writers to express their feelings con- cerning the school, relating our scholastic, social, and athletic activities. The Beacon literary staff deserves our sincere appreciation for their diligent work in producing a fine school newspaper. 4 £ ii iiiiiiiii The Beacon business staff and Mr. Good, their advisor, began their compaign early this year. They worked hard in attaining subscriptions and advertisements for the paper. In school there were posters, announcements, and the annual Beacon assembly.
