R.D. 1 WE DEDICATE THE ROAD NOT TAKEN BY — ROBERT FROST Two roods diverged in a yellow wood. And sorry I could not travel both. And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair. And having perhaps the better claim. Because it was grassy and wanted wear,- Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference. TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION 4 FACULTY 8 SPORTS 14 ORGANIZATIONS 40 ACTIVITIES 49 UNDERCLASSMEN 64 SENIORS 82 ADVERTISEMENTS 120 3 V M MR. S. RAY GRIM, JR. SUPERVISING PRINCIPAL If graduation from high school has been one of your goals in life, we are hopeful that your achieve- ments have been of complete personal satisfaction. Your teachers have tried to develop in you a thirst for knowledge and understanding. They have chal- lenged your thinking and have endowed you with basic tools and skills. The reason a baby can know little and an adult much, when confronted with the same things, is not because the latter has a mind which the former has not, but because one has al- ready formed habits which the other has still to ac- quire. We subscribe to the philosophy that habits are conditions of intellectual efficiency and that habit is energy which is organized in certain channels. The future of each of us rests within our own powers. Do well what at the present you have know- ledge, habit and understanding to do and your fu- ture will be rewarding. The Golden Age lies ahead of you, not behind you, I encourage you to establish new goals, to cultivate higher ideals, to strive to at- tain your true and rightful station in our great society. MR. CLAIR A. TROUT PRINCIPAL When does man become a man? Is it upon the receipt of a high school diploma or a college di- ploma? Is it at the time that he has accumulated a sizeable amount of worldly possessions? None of these are a true measure of manhood. A man be- comes a man when he has found the best that is in him,- when he has satisfied his inner self by achiev- ing the best of which he is capable. It is only then that he knows what life is worth. I suppose that any one of us when looking at our lives in retrospect will not become conscious that the things we did unselfishly for others brought us our greatest satisfaction. These are the acts that remind us that we are our brother's keeper. What a chal- lenge? What an opportunity; what a dire need for young people to become men and women in its truest sense. Best wishes in your efforts as you grow into man- hood and womanhood. 6 BOARD OF EDUCATION ROW 1: L. to R. J. Kohler, C. Sheerer, E. Shearer, M. Yascnchak, D. Root. ROW 2: L. Hartman, G. Snyder, D. The team had a tough season for they had little experience and different tactics taught by the new coach. The team will be losing only eight seniors, leaving a lot of good players for our coach to work with. The boys all deserve a pat on the back for their effort and hard work put in the past season. Get the ball D-Townl 17 Miss Jane Eppley HOMECOMING The Homecoming dance this year was a real royal affair with the queen and her court in street length gowns and escorted to the royal platform to the tune of Pomp and Circumstances. Yes, it was an elegant affair and a very exciting one for the girls and their escorts. The queen. Miss Susan Hess, was crowned by Miss Wanda Keller, a former home- coming queen of Dallasfown. Miss Linda Arnold, Miss Nancy McFadden, Miss Brenda Diehl and Miss Leslie Keeports. 18 OUR QUEEN SUSAN HESS Coach Barry Stein VARSITY: FRONT clockwise; G. Grove, J. Smith, R. Daugherty, E. WRESTLING This year the wrestling team, under the coaching of Murray Davidson and James Beck, we have a rather experienced team. Several letfermen have returned in addition to some other matmen who wrestled last year. This year a greater number of fellows have participated in this relatively new sport at D-Town then any previous year. We have quite a tough schedule to cope with this year with the most troubled spots being Spring Grove and West York. We hope they have a season as successful as last. 24 Pin that man! Smile boys! Although they did not have a very suc- cessful season, the outlook for the coming year is very bright. Mr. Kohler, who coaches the Junior High JV's, had quite a large turnout of seventh- graders. Good luck to the new team. Clark Walters, Richard Orwig, Forrest Kohler 34 JUNIOR TEAM IN ACTION ROW 1: R. Ham, K. Moist, S. Smith, B. Kreidler, W. Hershey. ROW 2: S. Snyder, B. Attig, J. Tanner, R. The team consists of some very talented players. Coach Harmon should have no trouble with height since several of the players are six feet tall or taller. Although the back court men are short, they are very quick. The future looks good for the Wildkittens. We hope they continue to play as well as they have played. 36 JV Coach and teom 37 Jomes Bullock JUNIOR HIGH TRACK This year coach Bullock's team had only three meets and were unable to score a victory in any of the three. However, they were up against stiff com- petition in all the meets. These meets were with York Suburban, Spring Grove, and West York. It is the medium of exchanges of ideas and principles between the students and higher officials of the school. The Student Council is molded after the Federal Government of the United States,- consisting of two divisions. One body, the Representative Council, of a representative from each homeroom, and the other, the Executive Council, is composed of two repre- sentatives from each class. The function of the Student Council is to promote more effiicient school life. The Council sponsors sock hops and dances. Each year they issue our school handbooks, and collect food for the needy at Christmas time in what is known as Operation Santa Claus. 51 SCIENCE FAIR GRAND PRIZE WINNERS: lefr to right, C. SPECTATOR BUSINESS STAFF The Business staff of the yearbook completed the many business transactions needed for the yearbook. Under the direction of Mr. Winemiller, the staff worked on the various business phases of the book. One of the biggest jobs of the business staff was to find an income sufficient to pay the expenses of the yearbook. In order to do this, they sold subscriptions and adver- tisements, secured patrons and then distributed the books to the subscribers. 60 SPECTATOR LITERARY STAFF The Spectator was prepared by a staff selected last spring. The yearbook consists of the various activities which have taken place throughout the past year. Before the close of last year's school term, the staff had begun to plan the yearbook. From the beginning of the 1962-1963 school term the staff worked to finish sections of the yearbook by certain deadlines. Through the yearbook, the staff tried to portray the school life activities and incidents that will serve as enjoyable moments. THE STAFF: SEATED, Left to Right. N. Mitzel, V. Yosenshak, J. BEACON BUSINESS STAFF The Beacon Business staff, supervised by Mr. Good, started its subscription campaign early in the year. The advertising manager and her assistants canvassed the area, so- liciting for advertisements for the paper; the circulation manager and her staff con- ducted a vigorous subscription campaign in the school. Sincere gratitude should be ex- tended to the staff for its time that if has contributed to our paper. 62 BEACON LITERARY STAFF Directed by Mrs. Hannel, the Beacon Literary Staff worked diligently to produce a newspaper of high rank and quality. The Beacon is published six times a year. In this paper one can find the latest news about our school, and also special features, such as stories and poems. The Beacon is the means by which one can express his feelings concerning our school. The Beacon Literary Staff deserves much thanks and ap- preciation for all the work it has extended in order to produce a fine newspaper. THE STAFF: ROW 1. Left to Right. R. Reber, J. Schraoder, A. But never will fond memories fade That D-Town high has upon us made. We enter life and learning A hundred-eighty more. We leave the halls of Dallastown With memories of yore. We leave our class and studies. Our books and teachers dear. With hearts too full for utterance With but a silent tear We fondly look behind us And steadfastly before We are coming, life and learning A hundred-eighty more.
