You are now about to leave that in- stitution. As graduates, may you possess, among your many qualities, these attributes identified by the same four letters,- D — Duty — Never to tire, never to grow cold; to be patient, sympathetic, tender,- to look for the budding flower and the opening heart; to hope always; like God, to love always, — this is duty. — H.F. Amiel A — Ambition — Every man who can be a first-rate something — as every man can be who is a man at all — has no right to be a fifth rate something,- for a fifth-rate something is no bettr than a first-rate nothing. — J.G. Holland H — Happiness — That man is happiest who likes to do what he has to do. — Anon. S — Success — in proportion to your efforts in a worthy endeavor — . The talent of success is nothing more than doing whatever you can do well; and doing well what- ever you do, without a thought of fame. — Longfellow HARRY W. SHENK Supervising Principal Congratulations to the class of 1962! You have reached a milestone in the educational journey of life. One looks back at years past and then looks for- ward to the years ahead. An obligation for you at this time is best illustrated by the story of a young farm boy who headed toward the city on a hot summer's day. Halfway there he stopped to rest somewhat undecided if he should con- tinue or return. Just then a driver came by who offered him a ride to the city. Upon arriving at the city, the boy thanked the driver sincerely. The advice of the driver was that even though their particular path may never meet, the boy could show his gratitude by passing it on to someone else. During your school days many people did many things for you. Now it is your turn to pass on those good things to others. Life has many more of the good things than the bad if only we take time to count our blessings and pass them on. Our best wishes accompany you, and, may God's speed attend you as you move toward other milestones. CLAIR A. TROUT Principal 6 Ralph N. McShcrry, Adm. Asst. Carl Glatfelter, Bus. Man. Mr. Hummel, the literary advisor, selected these people from the Junior class. Before the close of last year's school term, the staff began the Spectator's initial planning. From the start of the 1961-62 school year, the staff worked to Finish sections of the yearbook by certain deadlines. This year the Spectator was compiled by a staff smaller than of previous years to increase the efficiency of compiling and editing the book. Many hours were spent on the exhaustive task of gathering pictures and ideas to be Fitted into the structure of our plans. As a staff we thank George Schroeder and Gary Alcorn for fine work and coop- eration they have given us. 24 SEATED left to right: M. Ruppcrt, 8. Orwig, R. Stremmel, N. Shumaker, B. Rohrbough, S. SPECTATOR BUSINESS STAFF We greatly appreciate the efforts of our business staff and third term students as they obtained adver- tisers and patrons. Many students, parents, and mem- bers of the faculty subscribed to the patron list. Sub- scribers of the Spectator have shown fine school spirit in responding to our subscription drive. Robert Stremmel was business manager of the Spectator for the 1961-62 school year. Mr. Winemiller was the advisor. The job of the staff was to sell adver- tisements and to compile a list of patrons. Friendly businessmen of the area are always willing to support the Spectator by their purchase of advertising space. We also thank the many patrons for their dona- tions — for many this is a chance to see their name in print. 25 SEATED left to right: H. Davis, B. Bull, J. Lentz, N. Stump, (Editor,) D. Our paper has won first place in the 1960-61 PSPA school contest. Activities of the school are re- corded on four packed pages. Six times a year the editors and assistants, reporters, and advisor rush to meet their deadlines. Their rush work is of high quality. This year as Miss Weitcomb became Mrs. A.G. Hannel 3RD, and left our faculty, Mr. Burdette, Miss Weitcomb's replacement, became advisor. The Beacon for us is a means of expressing our feelings. Across the pages are deep thoughts expressed in poems and laughable events printed in a few lines of actual dialogues usually conducted- between a teacher and sleepy student. Many stu- dents submit questions and suggestions to the school through the Beacon. Never forget the power of the printed word. The Beacon has done a lot to improve our school. Buy the Beacon. Never forget its potential. 26 SEATED left to right: J. Dubbs, M. Mitzel, N. Mojtcr, R. McCleory, B. Criswell, STANDING: H. Eyler, D. Worn er, J. Blessing, R. Kirshner, L. Stroyer, L. Zumbrum, J. BEACON BUSINESS STAFF Under the direction of Mr. Good, the business staff or 1961-62 Beacon business staff commenced their subscription campaign early in the school term. Also advertisers were sought. Every six weeks with the new issue of the Beacon we receive the Roto, a magazine of general interest to all students. 27 ROW 1: D. Zarfoss, M. Bupp, A. Geesey, D. Although the problems of the world are constantly before us, let us remove them from our minds and with clear minds wander back to the time when we as freshmen undertook our high school education. We, as freshmen, had to become accus- tomed not only to a new and beautiful ed- ifice, but also to the numerous unfamiliar faces of both students and faculty. With Mrs. Richardson and Mr. Bingaman as our ad- visors, we elected Linda Mitzel, president; Ronald Fitz, vice-president; Deanna Sipe, secretary,- Linda Zimmerman, treasorer,- and Donald Fitz and Mary Ruppert, executive members to the Student Council. This first year made us realize that there would be both fun and work with student life at Dal- lasfown High. Our freshman year was cli- maxed with a trip to Hershey Park. In our sophomore year we were led by Linda Mitzel, who was re-elected president. Linda Zimmerman, elected vice-president; Nina Masters, secretary,- and Quay Smith, treasurer. Dean Staley and Bradley Thomas served as our executive members on the Student Council. Mrs. Innerst and Mr. Ritchey served as our class advisors. As the citizens of the United States went to the polls to elect a new President and Vice-President, we went to the polls to elect our class officers for our junior year. With Miss Weitcomb and Mr. Pottorff as our class advisors, we elected Robert Stremmel, presi- dent; Dennis Raver, vice-president; Nina Masters, secretary,- Joan Warner, treasurer,- and Gerald McQuade and Jane Denfler, executive members of the student council. Our Town, written by Thornton Wilder was our play, presented April 20 and 22 before capacity audiences. Mr. Garland directed. As we began to prepare for our senior year elected Mark Innerst as president of the Student Council and Nadine Stump was chosen to edit the Beacon while Gregory Bachman was chosen to the editorship of the Spectator. 113 This year we entered our final year of our high school education. With Mr. Wine- miller advising our class, we were led by Robert Stremmel, again elected president; Dean Staley, vice-president; Barbara Stump, secretary; Jean Warner, treasurer,- and Linda Leland and Gerald McQuade, executive members of the Student Council, this being Gerald's second year in this position. In the fall of the year Wanda Keller was crowned Homecoming Queen and we staged our senior play Romanoff and Juliet. The play, written by Peter Ustinov, was presented successfully on November 16 and 18 under the capable direction of Mr. Garland. Climaxing our days at Dallastown Area High School was an exciting class trip to New York City. Our school days ended with Baccalaureate and Commencement. We have now finished our four years of education which have molded us info young men and women through the guidance and understanding of our teachers. Whether we shall fail or succeed in our attempts, time alone will tell. With the knowledge of past experiences we face the future with confidence that our lives will be guided in the right direction. Barbara Lee Trout CLASS SONG We will not allow our future To be a desolation of truth and peace In the world and in our nation. We will direct our energy Toward each other's good. So others may enjoy our wealth of life. Gregory Bachman 114 POEM OF OUR HANDS BY G. BACHMAN The door snaps open. A hand pulls the paper into the air into the house. The man, who seems starved for news. Grabs open the paper. He Stearns toward light from a window And gorges his heavy breaths With Help Wanted news. News of hope or despair. 1. A tension of fear is political music to the newspapers. The paperboy rapidly folds his crackling news And flicks the spinning, gray slab That thuds against the door And unfolds on the porch. Pages breathe apart in a sigh of wind. Eyes desperately sift each block of print. Trembling fingers wrinkle the paper they hold. Hands hold the responsibility of security to his family and to himself. But, he slaps the pages shut and throws the paper onto a chair and stumps to the kitchen for supper with his family. A year ago he shook hands with a campaigning politician who promised a job to him and others who were unemployed. To this man that handshake was a promise which would follow an unalterable course to reality. 115 2. We pull the future of the unborn Along the foot-paths of our present and past Which intertwine and are enlarged through our memories. Will the unborn generation Raise the worth of our civilization? Will our environment guide or hinder The force of imagination Which will supply them with What our hands do not hold? Pioneers and developers worship the strength and means Enabling them to blast through barriers of ignorance and unknown wealth. As bodies, not ideas, are becoming symbols of people. The connotation of qualify is shifting from virtue to material. And mankind holds an unwanted child in its hands. 3. Love forestalls crippling frustrations thought and work cannot deny. Love's emotion causes work to wander into daydreams and passionate wishes, Unknowingly within the scope of present sight. Numbers are structures mathematicians love that have given us dreams very few can fathom. Stronger and stronger is the spirit of human love the eyes can congeal only into a gleam. 116 Lovers may die, but, who can forget love? Time may fade affection, yet we will always remember Once there was someone who I loved and loved me. Today we live for the burning ideal of love And the past and future are spun into unending threads Of dreams sent whirling from a kiss. A child reads, a grandmother reads And both will have etched some of their own words Into written posterity Man binds into books or stores away in attics. Words perform the simplest stimulations and clarify meanings of sight That both the child and his grandmother need To continue a compatible life with the world's pro- gress. 117 Young in the world, we read of problems. Remaining under centuries progress passed through. But never solved to man's satisfaction. Let us hammer answers to our problems on an anvil of progress. 4. We can multiply the power of our hands To numerical infinity. Yet we barely comprehend the tangible. We ask questions in geology and biology. In factories and churches. The laws answering our questions stabilize Our transition into a new age of good in strife with wrong Of success pulling above failure. Though we struggle with our hands We live hoping for miracles which bind us to our work. 5 Life cannot be bounded by bars or wires. Nor can any rules crack the entire will of a nation. But, when we allow the false facades of faces, clothes and food To encompass our vision of democratic security We lose safety for tomorrow. For there are those who wait for weakness To penetrate people who live fearing Tomorrow. 118 We live, searching for salvation of this life In work, religion, art And end life with a philosophy so large That its real value can be seen only in eternity. Life is a question lived Toward an answer that is eternal and infallible. We need to possess individual identity That may melt into a languid mass Of wasted life still breathing. We face the future in humility That knows we do not have all the answers. We know the problems are more complex than ever. But, we know our potential is still untouched to a great degree And our hands will build monuments to that potential. ADVERTISEMENTS AND PATRONS OUR PATRONS Joy Irene Allison Mr. Mrs. John F.
