THE CLASS  1361 ai PRESENTS ITS VOLUME of i-hd We, the class of 1961 A.D., invite you to become a spectator as m this, our final year at D.A.H.S., unfolds before you. Through our phase of our school life. In attempting to present all our various sports, literary, and musical activities, our underclassmen and associates, our faculty istrators, we have, perhaps, overlooked or misrepresente 1 wi. 1 admin- some 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION VI-XIII UNDERCLASSMEN LX-LXXVII ACTIVITIES AND ORGANIZATIONS LXXVIII—Cl SPORTS CII-CXXI PATRONS AND ADVERTISERS CXXII—FINIS 3 APPRECIATION Mr. Cooper, Mr. Layser, the Spectator Staff of 1961 wishes to express its appre- ciation of the invaluable assistance and guidance you have rendered during the production of this year's volume. Although you left D.A.H.S. in December, Mr. Cooper, your boundless energy and able supervision will always be remembered by us. You instilled within us the desire to complete a yearbook estimable of recognition and, we hope, commendation. You, Mr. Layser, have been a competent aid throughout the year in that you've given unselfishly of your time and energy to help us assemble our book properly and meet our deadlines on time. Again we thank you both for being there when you were needed and for always being willing and able to help. 4 DEDICATION Mr. Harold 8ergcr B.A. — Millorjvillc State Tchrj. College M.S. — Temple Univerjity To you, Mr. Berger, the class of 1961 dedicates its volume of the Spectator. The patience, proficiency, and understanding you've exercised in class and out has made it difficult to express the admiration and esteem we feel you merit. Your constant humor, clever wit, and consent to intervene and advise has helped not only to relax class tension, but has impressed upon us character worthy of emulation. In closing, we hope this humble tribute lays bare our heartfelt appre- ciation and gratitude for being more than just a teacher — but a friend and confidante as well. 5 Dr. Horry Shcnk, Superv ng Principal B.A. — Dickinson College M.A. — Gettysburg College D.Ed. — Pennsylvania State University You have begun your last year in the public schools in 1960 — the beginning of a new decade. When the new decade arrives, you will have seen many changes in your lives. Collectively, you will have experienced higher education, technical training, apprenticeships, adjustments to new positions, adult tasks, voting privi- leges, marriage, children, family responsibilities, joys, sorrows, successes, failures, aspirations, disappoint- ments, friendships, unfriendly relations, gratitude, regrets. As we look at you individually, we cannot predict to whom the pleasant and positive experiences will fall; nor can we predict what additional perplexing problems you may meet. However, we can point out to you certain characteristics which you should strive to develop as supplements to your academic learning — truth, belief in a higher Being, integrity, morality, dependability, honesty, work habits, a spirit of friend- liness. These traits will improve your lot in life. Upon graduation, promise to develop these traits, and, having promised, don't fail to do what you have promised. Mr. Marstcllar, Elementary Supervisee Mr. Glatfelter, Business Manager; Mr. McSherry Administrative Assistant. SECRETARIES: (STANDING) Mrs. Geesey, Mrs. Reidel, (SEATED) Mrs. Shearer. 8 Congratulations to you for having successfully com- pleted your public education! You have now reached a milestone in your young life. We trust that your life will have many more simi- lar milestones, for you see you are a part of the world now engaged in a cold war which in reality is a war for the minds of men. At no time in history has there been more need for clear thinking than today. Ideologies beset us on all sides and with all tech- niques of modern propaganda, often appear sensible. Out of this mass of ideas must come your inner beliefs and ultimate decision that man is God's greatest creation and the worth of an individual is more than the whole world. In this thinking is the need of today and the hope of tomorrow. We can feel confident that the training you have received here at Dallastown Area High School will help you to reach this goal. May you live that your school will be able to say with pride, That's one of our alumni, we're happy to have been a part of his past. Out of Ages past, A product of the progress And the failures Of man and nations. Arises the youth. We have been enriched And encouraged By this post glory; We have greatly profited From these errors. Now our days as students are over. Armed with the knowledge reaped from bygone years. We must face the present And the future. With heads uplifted. Spirits soaring. Hearts and souls aflame with newfound dignity. We march onward and upward. Our goal: A. greater world for us. And our posterity. Our prayer is this: That God accept our humble plea For Guidance Through the years to come. So that after death we meet again In Eternity. Kathleen E. THE CLASS SONG Words and Music by Ann Snyrjor1 1 fil. 8 ores. 58 CLASS HISTORY T| HE curtain falls upon the many scenes of our high school memoirs, only to rise once again,- this time it rises upon life's largest role — the setting, the adult world. The majority of us will fit the role quite well because of our excellent guidance and our fine preparation for it during the past years. Let us relive the colorful events of our freshman year and the early development of our enlarged and refined Class of 1961. With Mr. Charles Leber as our class advisor, our annual election of officers was conducted with these results: Charles Tyson, president; Helen Rojahn, vice-president; Gretchen Stein, secretary,- and Dawn Fife, treasurer. One of the outstanding events of that year was our class assembly program modeled after the television show The Price Is Right. Panel members were selected from the audience and the winning members were presented with complimentary gifts from friendly busi- ness associates in our area. Our freshman year was climaxed with a bus trip to Hershey Park. As sophomores we had to become accustomed not only to a new edifice, Dallastown Area High School, but also to the numerous unfamiliar faces of both students and fac- ulty. This proved to be an adventuresome we well as a beneficial experience. The Class of 1961 progressed under the supervision of Mr. Harold Berger and Miss Susan Kise. Charles Tyson was again elected president; Dawn Fife, vice-president,- Daryl Hinkle, sec- retary,- and James Sites, treasurer. As juniors, our class advisors were Mr. Charles Landis and Miss Virginia Kressman and our student leaders consisted of Daryl Hinkle as president; Donald Patterson as vice- president; Patti Snyder as secretary,- and Linda Bear as treasurer. The Junior Class was responsible for the Thanksgiving assembly in which some of our fine actors and actresses presented quite a humorous play entitled When Elmer Played John Alden. After many long hours of practice, our dramatic performers again displayed their tal- ents in our successful junior play, Sister of the Bride, under the direction of Mrs. Elaine Brown. And now we have reached the top of the ladder. As upperclassmen we elected Donald Patterson president; Daryl Hinkle, vice-president; Patti Snyder and Linda Bear were appreciative of the assistance which Mr. Ivanhoe Winemiller and Mrs. Mary Waltman have given us, as our class advisors. This year our class production was a mystery comedy entitled Bull in a China Shop, directed by Mrs. Helen Schaeffer. We put forth much effort in compiling our class publication, the SPECTATOR, along with our advisor, Mr. Harry Cooper. A major highlight of this year was our thrilling class trip to metro- politan New York City. Our school days are now ended, but memories of Baccalaureate and Commencement will remain firm in our minds. Together, we shared our last hours as seniors at our elaborately planned Commencement Ball. As the curtain falls it seems to separate the past from the future, but we know that it can not shut out the memories of our Alma Mater. The Yearbook, compiled and edited by the Senior Class, consists of the various ac- tivities which have taken place throughout the past year. It was a very tedious job to put the Yearbook together, but many happy times were spent while working on it. The literary staff, with the aid of their advisor, Mr. Cooper, prepared the literary work for publication. The editors and their staffs worked diligently in order to meet the deadlines set to finish the book for distribution. Throughout the year, a representative from the yearbook company visited the year- book meetings and helped with various problems. He always administered help and their experiences. They, through this book, are adding a greater variety of worth to The Yearbook was stifling, but everyone on the literary staff learned much through their experiences. We lost to our neighbors. Red Lion and York Suburban. Our spirits were high when playing Central and Spring Grove but were dampened when we lost to Central by fumbling an apparent touchdown in the end zone and losing to Spring Grove in the last minute of play after two touchdowns were called back because of penalties. To the team and coaches we owe congrat- ulations for the pleasures and heartaches of the foot- ball season. Dallastown's Junior High completed its first year of league competition in football. The team, as a whole, was inexperienced nevertheless the boys worked hard at practices and gave a good showing in all competition. The team under the supervision of Ronald Grove and Ronald Pottorff played against more experienced teams, such as Red Lion, Spring Grove and West York and found themselves on the short end of the scores. In spite of these scores, the team learned much about football and will be able to gain knowledge that will be inval- uable to them in their future varsity years. 106 Coaches: Murray Davidson, Ronald Pottorff, Rafc Nabors, Sherdell Snyder, Ronald Grove. SENIOR VARSITY CHEERLEADERS JoAnn Hu on, Audrey Hoke, Deonno Saylor, Solly Sherrick and Lindo Mitzel. Dallastown's cheerleaders have done much to deserve recognition. Each squad has worked together as a unit in promoting invaluable school spirit as well as cheering them- selves hoarse at every sporting event. In the past year all three squads have participated in the York County Cheerleading Contest. As usual, they performed well and came in second. The Class of '61 extends a sincere note of gratitude to each cheerle for her merit- able service. 107 SR. VARSITY ROW 1: C. Tyson, L. Faircloth, R. Holtzapple, H. Fitz, D. Stricklcr, D. Miller. ROW 2: P. Solymos, T. Snyder, W. Boscshorc, R. Waltcmycr, G. Noce, W. Arnold. The Senior Varsity was under the leadership of Coach Miller. Even though the team was composed mainly of seniors they lacked the basketball experience that goes with championship teams. This lack of experience showed itself in our first two games when the Wildcats lost to the Hanover Nighthawks and the Northeastern Bobcats. The team rebounded and showed real class in defeating the Mustangs of Southwestern and the Alumni. In the Susquehannock tournament, a new venture this year, our team took third place by defeating the host school, Susquehannock, in the consolation game. Our Wildcats continued their winning ways by defeating Susquehannock in our first league encounter. Our first league loss was to our arch rivals Red Lion. This loss was followed by league victories over North- eastern and Kennard Dale. 108 Jr. High Coach Dale Miller Jr. Varsity Coach Barry Stein Varsity Coach Gerald Miller SENIOR PLAYERS 109 Lee Foircloth Terry Snyder SENIOR PLAYERS William Baseshore Dallas Stricklcr Donald Miller lit) William Arnold Peter Solymos ROW 1: P. VARSITY Coach Stein's Junior Varsity at this writing is enjoying a rather com- fortable position over all their opponents. As of now, the Junior Var- sity is undefeated with victories over Red Lion, Northeastern, Kennard Dale, Susquehannock and Hanover High. But the Wildcat underlings are not completely secure for Spring Grove, Central, and West York also remain undefeated. The Junior Wildcats soon encounter these league leaders. Coach Stein has set his goal at the championship and if looks as though the Junior Varsity has the same idea in mind. Ill Manager : R. Kchr, T. Allison, D. Staley, C. Aldingor, D. Fitz, D. He . HIGH BASKETBALL Our Junior Wildcats worked hard from the start of the basketball season on Novem- ber 1 to the very end. This hard work and concentration paid high dividends. Under the leadership of Coach Miller, the Junior High team has not tasted defeat as of this writing. This also can be said of the Junior High Junior Varsity. Among their victories are games over Dover, Susquehannock, and Northeastern. The Junior High team has defeated Dover in an exhibition game and Susquehannock, Red Lion, Northeastern, Kennard Dale in league competition to lead their division with a four won none lost record. You can tell if their early record will stand by the time you read this printed page. Our prediction is that it will stand and they will have remained in first place in the Eastern division of the York County Junior High Basketball League. 112 JR. VOLLEYBALL The 1959-60 volleyball team concluded another season at Dallastown. The girls put forth a great deal of hard work and showed fine team effort. They were somewhat handicapped in comparison to other teams in that volleyball is a relatively new sport at Dallastown and most of the girls were newcomers with the fundamentals of the game. The volleyball team played Spring Grove at home but were unable to overcome their opponent: 15—7, 15—4, 15—4. Kennard Dale handed the volleyball team another loss by defeating Dallastown 15—4, 15-9, 15-5. Visiting West York handed the Wildcats another loss but was unable to win the last match: 15—0, 15—3, 13—15. 114 WRESTLING ROW 1: T. Keener, R. Fitz, J. Snyder, J. Smith, J. Lookingbill, D. Root, D. In this their first year of interscholastic competition, the boys overcame the lack of experience by diligent practice. Diets became a vital part of their lives since making a weight class determined their eligibility. The season was a rousing success even though the number of matches won did not place us in the upper half of the league final standings. The future of wrestling looks bright since the squad was composed of under- classmen except for these seniors: George Everhart, James McDowell, David Dehoff, and Richard Sprenkle. 115 Coach Murroy Davidson, Assistant Coach James Beck. HIGH TRACK Dallastown's track team enjoyed an exceptionally fine season in that they won all their interscholastic meets. In an exhibition meet with York High the Dallastown track men triumphed over the Bearcats by a score of 68—50. The Wildcats entered the Leb- anon Relays where they placed second. Spurred on by the relays the team won a trophy and twelve medals. The Wildcats soon racked up another victory by defeating Central 83V4—71 Vi. Dallastown's mile relay participated in the Penn Relays where they placed second but were boosted to first by a disqualification. However, this good luck did not prevail for our team was disqualified on a minor infraction of the rules.
