LADY- from the Anglo-Saxon word meaning serve the loaf, the lady or mistress of the house being the one who served bread to her family. DUNCE- originally meant wise man, or a follower of a noted philos- opher, Iohn Duns Scotus, known as Doctor Duns. The group became conceited and consequently unpopularg so in time the term Duns' men or dunce became a term of derision. EAvEsDRoPPER- t originally a person who stood near doors and windows, under the drip of the eaves, to listen to private conversations within houses. HEAVEN- originally from the verb 'to heave or raise and means liter- ally that which is raised high. PICNIC- originally pick and nick. When this form ot recreation came into vogue, the person getting up the party would pass around among the invited guests, a list ot articles of food needed. Each person would pick what he wished to bring and nick it on the list. THIMBLE- originally thumb bell because oi its shape and its being worn on the thumb. I
