These freshmen, who were to have the companionship of each other for four long hard years, immediately began working and elected as their presidents, Iosephine Lewis and Pete Pennington. During the following months they added to their knowledge facts, ideas, and theories-all the requirements of future life. When the examinations carne, some were awarded for their skill and were exempted. It was not, however, all work, Mrs. Cano was one of our favorite teachers and we experienced many an interesting day with her. Chapel programs were often given and were liked by everyone. Sometimes a room gave a program, a preacher gave an interesting talk con- cerning practical experiences, or our principal, Mr. Carr, led us in group singings. The days seemed to pass away more quickly: summer came and we found that we had completed one step toward our goal, graduation. Although there was plenty of work for sophomores to do, the year was one of extraecurricular activities. Thelma Hope, Iosephine Lewis, Sarah Chambers, Pete Pennington, Barbara Smith, Boyd Smith, and Dean Ratchford, each having a high, average in grades the previous year, were initiated into the popular Beta Club. Bob Carter and Marshall Smith were added to the boys' basketball teamg Martha Pthyne, lean Mauney, and Carolyn Ratchford, to the girls'. Combining work with pleasure, the F. F. A. team, including Bill Wilson, Gertis Summey, and I. E. Rudisill, was fourth in the Federation Contest at Cherryville. As individuals Ice was among the first three in the cattle iudging. Not satished with these showings, the farm boys planted a future crop of pine trees below the gymnasium. As a reward for their fine sportsmanship in the games. the Dallas basketball teams were awarded the Sportsmanship Trophy. Lacking experience, the baseball team lost its first games to Bessemer City, Stanley, and Lowell. Another season of school had passedg another step had been taken forward. In September of '46 the now familiar doors of Dallas High were once again open to us. Many entered with an expression of ioy on their facesg some with an expression of sadness. During the election of officers, Dub Walker was chosen by a large maiority to be president. Confusion and trouble in the form of geometry, French, typing, bookkeeping, etc., left us in a fog during the entire year. Mrs. Hawkins, our English teacher, allowed some of the most miserable to take part in a Negro minstrel. The Hallowe'en Carnival, as always, was a big success. The pounding of the piano, the smell of hot dogs, the loud laughter, and the general gaiety during the cake-walks, ball pitching, fortune-telling, and bingo-playing-all symbolized a part of our school life. The class of '47, having been teased, frightened, and dismayed, was suddenly given a Iunior-Senior Banquet. At this banquet there was not only beautiful singing CPD and good speech making but also excellent food. The buds and birds of spring reminded us that another year of work and pleasure had ceased. Forty-one of us experienced the thrill of being seniors in 1947. Our duties included the election of class officers, the selection of superlatives, a motto and a class song. The officers were jim Warren, president, Carolyn Ratchford, vice-president, Martha Rhvne, secretary, and Pete Pennington, treasurer, the mascots were Amelia Wright and Billy Ray Rhyne. A gentleman from the Balfour Iewelry Company was permitted during an English period to show the group many different styles of rings. The group, being divided in thought, chose both red and blue stones. Soon after the YELLOW JACKET staff was appointed, Mr. Honigman of the Honigman Studios came to take pictures. One might have not realized there were such beautiful girls and handsome boys had he not seen them when they were all dressed up. During the year an honor came to the class. Bill Wilson together with others of the F. F. A. won a seed iudging contest over three other counties which gave them a trip to Rocky Mount. As the last year fades slowly and painfully by, many of the faithful thirty-five view graduation as a ioyful occasion while others of our class are sorry to leave. ' . Our years of school life have given us a view of life and its realities. If we develop our ability to use the facts we have learned, if we work hard, if we have patience, and if we believe in and have faith in ourselves and in God, we can and will succeed. ROBERT LINEBERGER, Class Historian. Page Fifteen CLASS PROPHECY As the prophet for the Senior Class of 1948, I gather my prophetic powers and gaze into the starlit heavens. The stars, at first dim, then extremely bright, seem to reflect clearly my classmates- I see Mot Rhyne as wife of a great song writer. She is the first to introduce each of his new productions. William Holland has successfully achieved his hopes of being a lawyer, Geraldine Cribble, who never makes a mistake in work, is his secretary. I find Becky Hovis as head nurse of Walter Reid Hospital in Washington, D. C. Marcilyn Beam and Melva Boggs are among her assistants. Iris Clemmer is married to one of Dallas's largest contractors. She serves as business manager. Kay McGinnis seems to have gained considerable fame for her work in art, her most famous painting being one of her horse. I see Tooney Edison pitching baseball for the New York Yankees-for recreation he pitches horse shoes. In a strangely bright star I see Robert Lineberger, a chemist, workin with the atomic bomb. I see Truett Taylor crooning to spellbound bobby soxers as Boyi Smith and his orchestra accompany him. Thelma Hope is secretary to jim VVarren, a famous brain surgeon. Iosephine Lewis is happily married after two years as an airplane stewardess. Robert Crickmore and Irene Cloninger are being married. I. E. Rudisill is performing the ceremony. Marshall Smith is a commercial pilot for Eastern Air Lines. I see Betty Rhyne as secretary to Don Usery, manager of the Pilot Life Insurance Company. Dallas' own Bobby Carter is making headlines in big league baseball. Bill VV ilson has gained success as a farmer and is looked upon as a second Luther Burbank. Certis Summey is making much progress in industrial engineering. I see Leonard Wright operating a large service station on the Lincolnton highway. Dean Ratchford is happily married and living in Lincolnton. Sarah Chambers is operating the High Shoals Beauty Salon. Betty Cloninger is making pictures for Warner Brothers in Hollywood. Clara Sue Cloninger seems to be in China as missionary from Hardin Baptist Church. Carolyn Ratchford seems to have remained true to her home town of Dallas and is planning to marry an electrical engineer in the near future. I see Barbara Smith as interior decorator for Tiffany's jewelry Store in New York City. Jean Durham owns a restaurant where fine foods are served. Sam Brown is now Secretary of Agriculture. Thelma Mauney and Faye Thornburg are partners in a dress store in San Francisco, California: and Evelyn Hoyle is seamstress in charge of all acliustments. Anxious to know my own future, I gaze at the last starg but it is too late-the stars have grown dim, for the sun is rising out of the east. I find my part as prophet finished. VVe turn from star gazing to go out into a new world and meet the challenge of its realities. CLASS POEM At the top of the stairway that leads to the goal Of everyone living, whether good or bad soul. A mirror, crystal clear wants to unfold-and then We'll see iust how we've taken each step. First step on this stairway of learning, JACK Moons We took with a vim, childish hearts were then yearning, Almost in Fairyland our thoughts were iust burning to hear What became of the princess and queen. On the second step we found things more real by far, The teacher told us to hitch our wagon to a star, So many things then did seem to bar our view, From the stars as they brightest were. We've taken the third step and each of us now, Is venturing forth if we'll allow A look in our mirror, it will help us to bow To the wide, wide world But iust when and where and how. IF each step has been taken in iust the right way, VVe're ready for the tasks that will come day by day, Reflections in the mirror of life will now say, Go ahead, vou're prepared, Be happy and work and pray.
