The tradition continued in 1987 with the Homecoming Spirit week. Through the week, DHS students enjoyed a variety of activities, showing their enoro-mous amount of spirit. Each day of the week was a special dress-up day, such as Disney day and Hippie day. It was sort of disappointing, it was just like last year, agreed Dan Crichlow and John Grippin. The annual Powder Puff football game was played Monday night. The seniors were victorious 28-0. The coronation assembly was held Tuesday in the gym. The court was presented to the crowd by the Master of Ceremonies, Mr. Jim Fairchild. Christy Randles was announced as the queen. She took her Queen's walk and officially opened the Homecoming festivities. Dra-gonnaires sang the theme Stand by me and senior Tina Emigh sang the Homecoming song “In My Dreams . The week came to a close Friday night with the football game against Stayton. The Dragons beat the Eagles with an awesome score of 55-7. It was really awesome. We really romped 'em, stated Gary Burton. After the game a dance was held in the DHS cafeteria. It was open to all high school students and past DHS alumni. The colors for the evening were red, black, and white. The dance was semi formal and a DJ was hired. By Michelle Cook Queen Christy Randles reads the Homecoming scroll, held by her escort Scott Tallon. The reading of the scroll signifies the opening of the Homecoming activities. 2 v Members of the Homecoming court show the playful side The entire school was nvited to dress n ce on the day of the assembly Drogonrvares sing the theme Stand by me during the assembly on Tuesday. The good old days of waiting to hear the first letter of your name called so you can go to the lovely cafeteria and for what ... getting your pictures taken. Wow!!! How fun!! It takes two seconds to take a picture you have to live with for a year. Like most people you probably don't like them! One of the many advantages of being a senior is the senior pictures. The only bad thing is the cost of the pictures. It is totally worth it though!! You can have the pictures taken in any outfit. Ranging from a prom dress or a tux to jeans and a sweatshirt. You can have the picture taken with any kind of prop ranging from a car to a cat. There is no line to wait in and you don't have to worry about your hair because you can do it as many times as you want. Also, if you don't like the way one of the pictures look you have many more to choose from. Then you can pick as many as you want or as few as you want, you don't have a certain packet to choose from. Seniors, enjoy getting your pictures taken! You're only a senior once. Like Cindy Bressler told me. I was so proud of my picture I could have pinned it to me! You all should be proud! By Ann Berry and Trade Steggell Consumer Economics was definitely a SENIOR class. This year the name of the class was changed from Personal Finance II to Consumer Economics. Especially when they're not so serious! Tina Evans and Sunny Costelow try and listen in Mr. Steins' Sociology class. Tina Evans was the yearbook editor her Junior and Sophomore year. We made it!!!!!!!!!!!! 16 PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE Three months of no school. Three months of warm days. Three months of doing WHATEVER YOU WANT! Summertime is funtime as most would say and another summer just flew by. The summer of '87 was a short one but then again, just because it was short doesn't mean it wasn't fun! “I had a great summer, I thought it was just too short! replied Senior Cindy Bressler. The season started out pretty good, no clouds, lots of sun and activity. Then came July and the clouds but no one gave up hope. August proved there was hope and the sun once shined and raised the thermometer to 97, then 95, then 98 ... Perfect for the beach of Detroit Lake! As September came near and everyone went back to school, it was agreed it was a short summer. But hey, it's been said before - they'll be more summers yet to conquer! By Tracie Steggell Mr. Walker spends his summer days water skiing. He and his family rent a houseboat on Shasta Lake in California every summer. The Junior class, we are now upperclassmen at Dallas High School. We are going to the prom this year and the girls are arch bearers at graduation. This has been a great junior year stated Danelle Pelto. And Debie Ott agrees that this has been a really good year. The junior class has lots of spirit as you can see at the pep assembly on the right. But we have the most people. We have one more year to go and that will be the end of our high school years. Lets just stop and think for a minute or two why they are this way and what caused it all. Looking back, I'm sure most will recall the . year-long co-ed PE courses, barely passing the dreaded constitution test, buying class rings, and passing their last year of required math. Now, this diverse group looks forward to their upcoming junior and, most important, senior year with Mr. Clark as their class advisior. Best wishes to the class of 1990. Whether it be the loud mouths of everyone yelling at the same time or the pep band above the gym, it'd make your ears ring! Of course it all started with class competition with the Seniors yelling — Seniors, Seniors ... and the Juniors with Juniors, Juniors ... and so on. Then the flag salute and from there, the cheer- 32 leaders took over with a competition and their final cheer, hopefully to lead the Dragons on to another victory that night. The students and staff are the best things. They have a good balance between Academic and Athletics programs. The second best thing is the community support we have for all the programs. “The third best thing at Dallas High, is the support between the students and the staff. The newest thing for the athletic program is the building of a training room which will be co-ed and available to girls and boys equally. The training room now has a whirlpool, ice machine, taping table, and a supply cabinet stocked with first aid supplies. The administration has a new absence policy this year. The new policy works like this: if a student is absent for 15 days, then they won't receive credit for the classes they have missed. Even though they put us through bad times, the administration still cares. by Mary Poore Mr Brown finds time to smile. He says the students are the best thing about his job. Mr. Brown. These people play an important part in the every day life of a DHS student. If it wer-e'nt for them, just imagine what our school would be like! Think of all the messy halls, unorganized offices and what would we eat? It would be terrible. Each and every one of these people work hard to keep the students of Dallas High well informed, clean and well fed. So when you are remembering the good times at DHS, take a minute to remember the people who made them possible. And support your support staff... they do their best to support us! This time, the play was 'new' because it wasn't directed by Mr. Corby Ward, Dallas High's old theater teacher. It was directed, instead, by Mrs. Blair Cromwell. This was the first year in a long time that Mr. Ward hadn't directed the annual play, so the experience was new to many. Mrs. Cromwell chose The Man Who Came to Dinner , as her first production which turned out well. It was about a famous man, Sheridan Whiteside-played by Byron Perry, who had come to eat dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest W. Stanley. Sherri, as Mr. Whiteside was frequently called, fell while climbing the steps of his hosts home. He ended up staying at Mr. and Mrs. Stanley's to recuperate, mean while causing much turmoil in the household. The play was well performed and enjoyed by many. Mrs. Cromwell did an excellent job and we all look forward to her plays in the future. By Ann Berry and Lora Lapp Eric Ritz portrayed the young newspaper reporter Bert Jefferson. Eighty- seven meant hard work for the Dragon football players. Expectations were toward the possibility of another state championship like the year before. And it looked like nothing could stop the Dragons as each win pushed the Dragons up in the state ranks. The only possible hurdle for the Dragons was the Huskies of Sweet Home, the team of the final state game of last year. The Huskies got their chance for revenge on a cold Friday night. This was the game everyone had been waiting for. A sell-out crowd of thousands watched in standing room only at Sweet Home High. The Huskies hit hard and the Dragons fell 13-25. Both Dallas and Sweet Home earned spots in the state playoffs. It looked good for the Dragons as they won the first two games. The semi-final game was against the unranked Ontario Tigers. The score stayed tied at 0-0 for most of the first half. Ontario pulled ahead in the last minutes of the game, to edge by the Dragons 13-10. That was the end of 1987 for the Dragons. Maybe next year. This has been the biggest win for the seniors 28-0. The year before it was just 6-0 then in 85-86 it was 19-10. When school started I didn't feel like a senior. I was still expecting the ex-seniors to be there walking around. Finally it sunk in that we were the seniors. We had the power. I still didn't feel like a senior. I didn't start feeling like a senior until the powder puff game. I really felt like a senior when we won. It was the awesomest feeling. I had so much fun!!! The game was not at all like it was when we were juniors. We were a team! We all got along and laughed and had fun. We practiced as much as we could. It 54 was hard though because so many people uff worked. Everyone made their best effort to come as much as they could. Everyone had the greatest attitude. We had an attitude to just have fun and we weren't thinking oh we are going to beat them bad. We all just wanted to have fun. It turned out great since we won. As a senior I just want to tell the juniors good job for trying!! I wish you luck next year!! Keep up the senior winning streak!! The freshman started off kind of edgy but they got into and won six out of 14 games. Not bad, not bad! Then of course, there was the Junior Varsity, who won 17 games out of 20 games. Hey, all right guys! But really, all this leads to is — preparation for their future Varsity years! So let's give them a big hand and wish them luck! They put forth so much effort and enthusiasm. We just take it for granted. If it wasn't for the parents help there wouldn't be a basketball team. Just look at what the parents do for the kids. They have to take and pick the kid up from practices and games. Also, what about the time spent at the games cheering for their athlete?? That's one of the hardest parts, especially when the team has a record of 21 losses and 1 win. They have to keep the athletes spirits up when it has been a hard game. You never realize how much we need those parents. Next time you go to a sports activity shake a parents hand and say thanks!! It is very much appreciated. The freshman girls feam had a 11-7 season record, and a 9 - 3 league record. The freshman girls basketball team had an 8 game in a row winning streak. Freshman coach Donna Gentzler comments, The girls had an excellent season, they worked extremely hard at it and it paid off. We balanced our scoring attack with outside shooters and inside posts. There's a very good outlook for fhe future in basketball for these girls. This season was the best! My Coach Donna, was great. Tennis Tennis is a game in which opposing players-one or two on each side- use rackets to hit a ball back and forth over a net. The game is played on a flat surface called a court. Each player tries to score points by hitting the ball so that the opposing player or players cannot return the ball over the net and inside the court. Tennis takes alot of skill and practice, and thats exactly what the Dallas High tennis teams have. They have been having a very exciting season, and have been playing really well. The players practices have payed off, they have really had a good year. Its hard work, but tennis is a lot of fun. I'm sure all of the players would agree with me. Softball A New Start This year DHS had a new sport to add to their many school activities. Finally a girls softball team! A first ever for Dallas High. In the past, many of fhis year's girls played for a local city league called Kid's Inc. and learned the basic skills needed for softball there. This helped them to make these two dedicated teams as competitive as they are. With the help of Head Coach Shawn Mosley, the girls improved their skills and defeated many of the toughest teams in the state. Two other assistant coaches, Jean Neufeldt, Varsity; and Suzie Coughlan, JV; also had a great deal to do with the success of these teams. They provided an extra support needed by the Dragons. So far the teams have benefited from this and are doing well in their softball season. With less than a month left, DHS's softball teams will keep performing at top notch level and do the best that they can. Good luck to both teams; you've already done so well! By Lora Lapp Kim Burton.
