Dallas Dragon Dallas High School Dallas, Oregon Vol. 49 1966-67 As Time Goes By ■ ■ ■ The passing lives of students. . . are dominated by a common routine . . .thinking and learning. . .preparing and mastering. . .questioning others. . .but more important . . .questioning themselves. The school year of 1966-67 was characterized by. . .a communication peculiar to high school life. . . a search for individuality. . .a con- cern for developing a sense of ideals in a world of. . .chaotic development. This was a year of expanding. . . new ideas. . .new programs. . .and new policies. Moreover Dallas High students came to understand their own roles as young adults through that complex process. . .education. In between the applause of the fall play came hours of study, a hurried search for resource materials, an anxious moment before a test. The days passed and somehow time was found for an hour, in the Art room and a hopeful moment watching a basketball game. As the school year progressed, new friends are made and old acquaintances are renewed, behind the stage during rehearsal of a play and over the shoulder of an aspiring artist. And then, apart from the crowd once more, the lone student seeks the isolation and comfort of an empty corner in the library or the lonely radiator in the hall at 4:30 on a school night. A year of mature concern for the future and a development of the background in politics and student government, so necessary to success in life after graduation; 1966-67 was all these things and more. 7 Time Of Achievement Scholastics ranked high this year, with the addition of many new faces to the Honor Society. Members were concerned with achievement as well as enjoyment of each others company as evidenced by the pictures on the right. It is through these material elements of recognition that students are able to recognize improvement and attainment. Besides the traditional courses of study, Dallas students persuded the vocational and technical areas. Foreign languages offered a challenge to many as well as an insight to an ever shrinking world. Technical Drawing and Wood Shop offered a practical experience with concrete and tangible results. A change from those theory and speculation of other areas. Time passes here as will. With the first days of fall came the introduction to the course of study and finally a chance to get out into the shop and experience the feeling of pride with the completion of your own project. Without a doubt this part of school life provides much satisfaction to the persistant, and makes it possible for many students to prepare for the future. 8 The search for identity in a world of competitive spirit, both scholastic and athletic. .. athletes giving much of their daily lives to the building of body and mind, their moment of glory, brief. This was the year of the unsung hero, the discouragement of defeat and the demanding of much practice. 9 A high school is memories. A captured moment on the stage, a familiar face, the enjoyment of familiar talent, the pleasure of laughter, the silence of concentration. As the days go by, events of import came and went too. In September, Christmas vacation seemed a lifetime away, soon another year had run its course. Many students kept track of time through activities, others marked the passing days on pocked Callenders. Hours were spent and many times the demands were severe. Practice and rehearsal and drill, to Dallas High Students these words and words like Abdul, teamteaching, grubbies, censored, B. A., get smart, vacation, and happiness is were their language. Yes memories are an important part of a school year; some good, some bad, but all necessary. Life is what we are alive to. It is not length but breadth. To be alive only to appetite, pleasure, pride, money-making And not to goodness, kindness, purity, love, history, poetry, music flowers, stars, God, And eternal hope is to be all but dead. M. D. Babcock 1 1 The Sounds Of Life 1966-67 A year of watchful anticipation. A long year for the grandstand and bench sitter... As the year wore on the fans became increasingly glum and only sporadic bits of encouragement gave them a chance to release the buildup of excitement long held back. Waiting for the announcement of Homecoming Queen... Listening with tears in eyes to the dedication of the Grandstand.. . Dallas fans and team were determined. And their stubborness finally won out. And so the year stretched on and the same fans were cheering for another sport another time. Music An important part of our lives ... to Dallas band members the bold blazes symbolized their pride and standing. The pep and marching band added their melody to the games and, between songs, cheered as well. The early routines later became an impressive precision formation that thrilled many. The well-rehearsed numbers seemed to revive fans at times. Time had its effect on the team as well. Direct carry-over of school spirit had a part in backing the athletes. As the year passes there is a slow but noticable buildup of tensions of routine. And then, just when students feel that they are on the edge , a pep assembly is called, a gym class is held, the final bell dismisses classes for the day, and another school day is over. Many of the memories of school life are those concerning extra-curricular activity, the daily barefoot practices of the Rally Squad in gym or cafeteria... The thrill of rope-swinging at a FHA slumber party... The remembered bit of afterschool conversation between student and teacher.. . The in sound of a local group of musicians... These things play a large part in the average students' life and, because or in spite of them, he survives and looks forward to another year. .J Through the pages of this section the reader has followed the progress of the school year 1966-67. Its moments of delight and sorrow. . . The high points and the low. . . The awareness of group learning The silent contemplation of a loner... The need for each students' belonging and the like need for keeping his uniqueness... To try to recall the school year is a hopeless task, at best, the recollection is fragmentory. A face on a clock with the words, Time Passes - Will You? A calendar bare save for lonely June.. .A shrub outside a window in Room 15, growing, becoming dormant, and growing again. . .A deadline to be met... A prom date .. . College boards. . .A final game of the season. . .A moment of decision between green apple or red... Being last in line during late lunch. . .Waiting anxiously while tests are returned.. . Looking at your very own frog, in Biology. .. Watching the rain on a gloomy Monday .. . Walking thru the wet grass to an early class... These mean special things to Dallas High Students and are memories they will take with them when they leave. 17 Staff And Academics Then said a teacher, Speak to us of Teaching. And he said: No man can reveal to you aught but that which already lies half asleep in the dawning of your knowledge. The teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple, among his followers, gives not of his wisdom but rather of his faith and his lovingness . If he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind. The astronomer may speak to you of his understanding of space, but he cannot give you his understanding. The musician may sing to you of the rhythm which is in all space, but he cannot give you the ear which arrests the rhythm nor the voice that echoes it. And he who is versed in the science of numbers can tell of the regions of weight and measure, but he cannot conduct you thither. For the vision of one man lends its wings to another man. And even as each one of you stands alone in God's knowledge, so must each one of you be alone in his knowledge of God and in his understanding of the earth. from THE PROPHET by Kahlil Gibran Administration Administration has been and remains a binding force in the Dallas High School. A day in school year 66-67 never passed without the smiling face of Mr. Halstead appearing on the scene. A kind word or carefully planned question; these were a part of the language of the administrators. With the help of Vice-Principal Modde and Student Activity Director Mr. Jacobsen, the school moved efficiently through minor crises to the end of another year. Clarence Buhlen Budget Committee Member Although School board members are more often thought of as ’ Money Machines than people, they do represent a cross section of professions in Polk County. The community and students alike were grieved with the death of Board member Mr. Neufeld; a tragedy which increased the awareness of the human side of school boards. 20 Mrs. Dorothy Ross, Secretary, Gen. Office Mrs. Ruth Villwock, Secretary, Guidance Office Mrs. Ruby Dashiell, Secretary, General Office Through all the confusion which so marks the school year, there was one group of individuals who kept their cool . All day, everyday, from 5 am to 12 midnight the custodians worked hard to be sure the high school campus would be in the superb condition it is in today. The menu for this year was not the most spectacular, but is is indeed a compliment to the cooks that over two hundred students each day enjoyed the foods presented to them. Three Jadies make up the secretarial staff of the offices. Mrs. Ross, always friendly and concerned kept the receipts and books in order. Mrs. Dasheill, equally winning, devotes her time to administrators and teachers alike. Across the hall, Mrs. Villwock could be seen typing, licking stamps and doing a myriad of guidance duties. Mrs. Thelma Eames, Mrs. Marcella Brown, Cafeteria Staff Mr. Walt Bowden, Mr. Lowell Barlow, Custodians Staff Guidance Mrs. Evelyn Rogers, Counselor Life's troubles are numerous, even in school. Everyone must talk about their troubles to someone. In the counseling office Mrs. Rogers and Mr. Jones have filled this job adequately. Even though not everyone takes their problems to these persons, a significant amount do; and they receive the kindness and consideration which only special people can provide. To many Seniors the Guidance Office has represented the first link between them and the college of their choice. The counselors are asked to help pick the college. They do so by supplying information to the student. They also organize trips to the different colleges of this area. The guidance office has well supplied information of available scholarships, through the use of the Senior Scoops . Many students have found that only through the use of the guidance personnel could they continue the road that leads to better education. The Student Body salutes the Guidance Office for fine and deligent work. Language Arts A department, whose influence is felt throughout the entire school, is English. In the past year much emphasis was placed on cirriculum and study. With five of seven teachers new in the department, students enjoyed a change of pace year. Special projects included a Title I program in Reading taught by Mr. Staab. Bottom left pic shows Mr. Brown handing out papers. Bottom right is a shot of Connie Parker listening to a McKenzie type lecture. Mr. Richard Johnson Mr. Glenn Knight Mr. Fred Staab 25 Now, P11 just forge my name in the corner. Fine Arts study for the school year 66-67 resulted in impressive accomplishments for students in this field. Experimentation with unusual media including; woodcuts, oils, and plaster, were a part of the class effort. Under the direction of Mr. Leuhr, students developed the essence of creativity and all found opportunity for expression. Art And Languages 26 Mr. Jim Johnston Interest ran high in Foreign Languages last year. A new staff taught both Spanish and French with the help of a language lab and tape desk. Special attention was given to the geography, manners, customs, and mones of both France and Spain; with the emphasis on practial mastery of vocabulary. High points of the school year included; a joint French-Spanish picnic, a discussion with foreign exchange student, Fluvio, and peetry memorization. Music In the past school year, Choir, Band, Girls Glee, and Music Theory students have had an Excellent opportunity to develope natural and trained proficiency in the Fine Arts area. A new and rewarding type of instruction awaited singers and musicians last fall. For the first time a husband-and-wife team in the persons of Mr. and Mrs. Evans, taught Band, Choir, Girls Glee, and Music Theory. Dapper in their new uniforms and marching with precision, the band added a bit of brightness to athletic events. The annual Winter and Spring Concerts were well received and students proved to the general public that classroom training does pay off. Complete Concentration 28 oom-pa ! oom-pa ! 29 Teachers like Mr. Cheney, help their students to become better equipped to meet the demands that will be made in the future. The students get to learn many different and useful arts. These skills can be used in either a business or for the do-it-yourselfer . This department also was responsible for repair and improvement of the school plant. Scratch a little higher and to the left. As soon as it's lit, run! Mr. Charles Honeyt Designing a soup kitchen? 30 Mr. Frank Richards Mr. Robert Peppley Science The smell of young chicks was predominant in the middle months of this year. Everyone knew that Biology was at it again. Between observing and abusing chicks, the students didn't have much to do but figure up the computation and mumble something like poor defenseless chicks . The Biology students under the expert instruction of Mr. Sonnen and Mr. Sather also had a chance to experiment with the flame produced by a bunsen burner, or the insides of a frog. Sometimes the effect of such experiments was a bit of nausea, but most times it resulted in the enlarging of the students knowledge. The Chemistry branch was also smelly. HCL and NaOH, all made the Chemistry class and 2nd hall hardly bareable for the nostrils. But the fun of experimentation often outweighed the obstacles. With the humerous and delightful instruction of Doc Richards the students considered Chemistry class a fruitful experience. Studying is the only and knowing what only way to pass. 32 exclaims Linda Adams chick. way to learn Chemistry you've learned is the Chris Muller and Maryln Schellenberg find time during class to pet a baby chick. He's so soft. Mr. Bob Cantonwine Political and social geography, feature length historical films, large group discussion. All of these characterized daily Social Studies activity. With the addition of Mr. Tuttle, teaching World History, the department was brought to full strength. One interesting highlight in Modern Problems was a guest lecture by Dr. Jauncie from down under. Mr. Dewey Tuttle Mr. Paul Ward mm My, but my fingernails are interesting today. Social Studies American History fans listen while Mr. Ward instructs them in a daily lesson. Modern Problems student studys hard to accomplish great feats, such as passing. Not another small group discussion today ! 35 Mr. Bill Dressel Personal And Physical Education Mr. Ronald August Stan's Body Shop Due to the stimulating activities in Health and Family Life, students ended the year aware of the necessity of hygiene in their own lives. Students were kept on the edge of their seats with such expressions as brush three times a day , and it takes more love to make a marriage . UH! Birds can fly, so can I. Miss Lois Hamar Emphasis in P.E. the past year was placed on physical fitness and competitive sports. Because of mild weather many outside activities were conducted. Miss Hamar, as well as her male counterparts devised many things such as the circuit to make it fun. 37 Boy, that other team was lousy. Did you see the way. . . Distributive Education Note writing is a favorite pastime of most students. Vickie Wilson studies to learn the fundamentals of D. E. Distributive Education students spend much time with on the job experiences, as well as field trips, and class study. For the first time in the history of the D.E. class at Dallas High the regional convention was held locally. Anxious moments of preparation for the long awaited event. D.E. students from several states met, pooled resources, experiences, elected officers, and kibited . In a rare moment of attention Rick Thomas and Gary Minahan are involved in a D. E. discussion. Math Mrs. Mildred Kliever Mr. Lando Friesen The school year of 66-67 was a typical one for math students of all levels. Work on functions, sets, and close analysis of geometric concepts kept Math 6 students busy. A high point in the year was the national math test; Randy Crockett scored highest in the school. Glenda Alford putting in a few studious moments. I realize the back of the room is interesting Chris, but. . . Students in Math 4 were concerned with lines, points, and planes, and problems concerning these. The overhead projector, and other visual aids helped math theory become a reality to many students. But it worked fine in the book, Well Dick, maybe you just weren't ready for Calculus II. 39 Student assistants play an important part in and around most of the departments in school. At almost any time of the school day library assistants could be seen shelving books, cataloging, stamping, checking out books, and practically applying other library skills. Guidance and business office secretaries develop secretarial skills in on the spot training. These students work with thermo-fax accounting, announcing, and general secretarial functions, all of which enhance their chances of securing a good job after high school. Typing, shorthand and bookkeeping classes were filled to capacity as students attempted to learn the intricacies of a sidely publicixed but little understood part of curriculum. Mr. Albert Wagner Under the direction of a highly qualified staff various skills in speed and accuracy were developed in Typing. Shorthand students learned fundamental phrases and characters and later came the inevitable dictation drills. Bookkeeping students, under the direction of Mrs. Leavitt, came to know the workings of the profit and law statement and the balance sheet and even touched on income tax accounting. Home Economics currently involves more than one hundred students. Goals include a proficiency of vocational skills. The proof is in the eating. Cooking isn't too bad. Miss Anne Mackie A major highlight of the school year is the annual Mothers' Tea. The tea is a result of a united effort between Girls League and Home Economic students. 43 Toni Robinson, Sue Mulholland, and Sheree Basom leap in a frenzy of excitement during the Serpentine. Homecoming Homecoming - the bruised knees and sore throats derived from the serpentine; the heat of the bonfire, the burning of the BA effegy, the loveliness of Princesses Pam Zito, Connie Woodman, Connie Parker, Evelyn Hamilton, and Claudia Buchanan in their chic suits and formal gowns; the spirit of the game, the disappointment at the end; the live beat of the Marty Stites Dance-band. From the opening of the season with the Queen's proclamation to the last strains of music at the dance, Homecoming was a beautiful state of excitement. In a rare breakaway, Tom Branvold, makes an impressive ground gain. Students gather around the blazing bonfire, the climax to a day's collecting of debris for the symbolic burning. Enthusiasm was somewhat dampened by the homecoming game. Football The only bright spot of the football season was the final game with Forest Grove which resulted in both team and fans saming face with a long-awaited win. One of those long, lean years in football, 1966-67 would best be summed up by describing it as a year of rebuilding and gaining experience. As evidenced by the one win, Dallas ball players only clicked sporadically and faced a formidable list of challengers. The coaching staff were faced with a loss of eighteen first stringers from the previous year and had to depend on nine seniors, many without proper experience, to carry the squad as best they could. A challenging player, Jim Hardin makes a breakthrough only to lead into a tackle by Oregon City. With a year of experience, mainly centered around Sophomores and Juniors, the staff looks optimistically toward next season. Certainly it could not be said that either team or fans were lacking in the spirit and drive that makes good competitors. Sophomores The class of '69 entered the hallowed halls of DHS with determination and enthusiasm. Their spirit was evident in pep assemblies, where their voices and unity gained victories in competition. Their organization could be seen in their spring car wash, and the many competent sophomores participating in school activities. 1966-67 was a great year for the sophomore class. Some projects this year were: A buffet dinner for fathers on Daddy Date Night . The planting of shrubs and roses around the patio this spring. And the sewing of red and white organdy aprons to be used when serving at the FFA banquet. I think I left the water running in the bathroom. 62 Miss Mackie and Clara Cochrane behind bars. Future Farmers Of America The Future Farmers of America's main purpose is to promote learning in the field of agriculture and to develop good, strong, citizens of tomorrow. The main activity of the year was the Parent and Son Banquet. Here parents and teachers are honored. Yearly farming awards and Chapter Sweetheart are announced. National Honor Society Actually membership in the Honor Society can be considered a reward for people who have worked hard throughout their high school careers and have contributed service, scholarship, character, and leadership. Official membership into Honor Society is attained by being tapped in a special assembly; one in the fall and one in the spring. Officers included Ralph Watkins, President. 63 Juniors The Junior class provided the real backbone of school spirit in the 66-67 school year, and won all but two pep assemblies. For the first time in DHS history, a Junior yell Queen, Sue Mulholland, was on rally. (But the juniors proved to be human by losing to the women faculty in a basketball game and to the Senior class in the annual Powder Puff football game.) Despite the heartbreaks of this year, the class of 68' continued their enthusiastic behavior all year long, receiving the respect and admiration of all. Ik % € jc J KM Robert Thompson rapping one1 Local ump and opposition Lt LLjf To the right are the results of the 1967-68 student body election. The campaign was climaxed with a school assembly which involved everything from various colored bags to a Batman jump-in. Interest in the results ran high and all students were well qualified. Mrs. Kelly has done a fine job of advertising Dragon Tales. As it is, the Dallas High School Newspaper is one of the best rags in the state. The school has a right to be proud of its newspaper. The highlight and climax of Student Council activities was the AFS Carnival which was sponsored and run by council members. As is evidenced by pictures, the pressure of senior opinion in S.C. ran high and most students legislation was beneficial. Although no vast changes were made, many future politicians became deeply involved in such things as school lunch prices and student behavior. Below: Student Council officers are from L to R: Gerald Murphy, Sgt. at Arms; Martha Ferguson, Activity Chairman; Sharon Omley, Vice-President; Mark Elliot, President; Sally Kinion, Secretary; Becky Kliewer, Treasurer; and Sandra Dick, Election Chairman. V.P. Omley clowns around! Chefs Buller and Kelly working in Patisserie. Band Day The 5th Annual Band Day Parade took place in Dallas this year with ten bands competing. Soundwise, the DHS Band was by far the best, but the drill routine of the Madras Band won them first place, with Dallas a close second. The school can be proud of the reputation the band has developed from the five Band Day parades! Two big drips! ! Carnival For the first time DHS sponsored a carnival, with all proceeds going to the AFS program. Booths ranged from selling pictures to turtle races. There was also a dance with the Mass and the Klansmen playing. The entire effort was a $400 success . The Music Department combined to present Bubble Trouble. This operetta was a delightful comedy about business and advertising. Cheryl Loewen and Loren Fries en did exceptional jobs. As a whole, the cast and directors: Evans, Plummer and Fairchild did a fine job. Bubble Trouble Mr. Buttons begs to inform you. . . Miss Hamer, Advisor, in huddle with Lambert, Seaman, GAA G.A.A. was open to any girl with a real interest in sports and recreation. It helped promote a better understanding of sports, taught sportsmanship, and the result was a gain in skill. The club sponsored fun nights, play days, and took field trips. They played against other schools in volleyball. Canteen The girls who worked in the canteen were doing a service to the school. Before school, after school, and at noon, the girls did a fine job. The fun began in the fall with the Powder Puff Football game, where Junior and Senior girls, eager for victory', battled each other in the major fund raising project of the year. In spring, the Mothers' Tea was the beautiful and exciting end of the hard work and imagination of Mrs. Rogers, and Mrs. McKenzie, advisors; and volunteers. Christmas gifts for the girls at Hillcrest, a Valentine dance, and a Big and Little Sister party, completed a busy roster of activities for the year 1966-67. Connie Woodman Girl Of The Year Roland Boyce challenged and inspired the couples attending. Hi-C Banquet The 1966-67 Hi-C banquet was held at La Creole Jr. High. The entertainment was a trio by Misses Classen, Hildebrand and Friesen. Guest speaker was Roland Boyce. Afterward, a singspiration was held, followed by refreshments. Everyone had an enjoyable evening. Couples enjoyed roast beef dinner and dessert. Junior Senior Prom The 1967 Junior Senior Prom, Polynesian Sunset , was a romantic moment, a mystic spell, and a tropical dreamland. Couples waltzed, enchanted, under a silver ceiling to the strands of soothing music, each lost in their own world. Outside on the patio, stargazers drifted about, chatting. The mood of an orange volcano, a silver bamboo garden, and a tropical waterfall with its Polynesian god, and a grass refreshment hut, added to make the Prom an unforgettable and enchanting evening. Senior Assembly The Senior Assembly included special awards given in Drama, Attendance, Journalism, Speech and in many other fields. In the way of surprises the Senior Enlarging Machine and Mr. Moddes' special ar-rendance award topped the list, and the all-school band played several numbers. Graduation Unique is the only term that can describe the impressive ceremony of the Graduation of Seniors of 1967. From the first chord of music to the last echoing step of the graduates, those present were made aware of the real meaning of school and education. Seniors, last year, spoke for themselves and their words supported the feelings that many of them held. 112 Top Ten From left to right and top to bottom: Randy Crockett Janette Kessen Bev Johnson Ralph Watkins Chris Peterson Marlin Harms Sally Kinion Judy Lund Sandra Harder Ed Fuchs 4.00 3.89 3.87 3.82 3.80 3.66 3.52 3.50 3.46 3.45 Advertising perpetual forests yielding perpetual products and payrolls WILLAMETTE VALLEY LUMBER CO. These came in the weeks before our five deadlines. For an annual staff that started out with no experience, an innocent advisor, no publisher, untried photographers, and idealistic plans, June 8th left us with: 1. over 200 exposed rolls of film. 2. a calloused, slavedriver for an advisor. 3. a half-dozen pencil stubs . 4. enough junked layouts to reach from here to Salem. 5. five copy-received notices from The American Yearbook Co. 6. some of the know-how needed for inventing layouts, writing and editing copy, working in the darkroom, and co-operating. 7. between six and nine mental and physical wrecks. 8. A FINISHED YEARBOOK! We hope you will be satisfied--We Are. The Dragon Staff 134
