Text from Pages 1 - 146 of the 1964 volume:

The IW D rayon The spirit of a school is something which everyone seems to talk about but which nobody actually knows anything about. It is often associated with atheletics and pep assemblies, but it is something far deeper than just yells at a football game. It manifests itself in the classroom where students work and learn together; at dances and other school-sponsored activities; in teacher-student relationships and student- student relationships; and in school dealings with the community. Each person who passes through the doors of our school adds something to the spirit, for it is o part of all of us and it lives in our memories. This 1964 DRAGON is dedicated to the spirit of Dallas High School and all who would perpetuate it. 2 Table Of Contents Classes SENIORS JUNIORS SOPHOMORES Administration Faculty Academics Activities Organizations Athletics Advertising Indices SENIOR ACTIVITIES INDEX INDEX TO CLASS PICTURES 4 Classes SENIORS SEATED: Diane Gambit, Vice President; Maurice Schrenk, President; Corrine Shetterly, Secretary; Larry French, Sergeant-at-arms; Frank Wall, Activity Rep. We did many things together; in pep assemblies we contributed much to the spirit of Dallas High. Members of our class were to be found in almost every organization, helping with the work and adding to the fun. We attended the games and other school events. Throughout the year we looked to the future, and with the help of our advisors worked to initiate our plans; some looked for jobs while others took College Boards and selected colleges. One of our members is a National Merit Scholar, and many won scholarships to the institutions of their choice. We enjoyed having as one of our members our exchange student from Thailand. Several of our classmates won a trip to Chicago, and another went east to Williamsburg and Washington D. C. This summer two of our members will tour Europe with other F.F.A. members from all over the country The last few months flew by so quickly that when Commencement came we were taken by surprise. Now we must look to the future and our Senior year will be remembered as a wonderful experience. MOTTO: Today we stand together, tomorrow we stand alone. This Junior Class, it seems, is to be the first to approach the 200 mark in the history of Dallas High. Along with being one of the larger, we have also been one of the most energetic classes. Throughout both football and basketball seasons we devoted out time to operating the popcorn machine, and we produced some of the best popcorn Dallas High has ever had. When we weren’t selling popcorn, we were winning pep assemblies which were judged on enunciation, loudness, and spirit. We must have had something to be able to beat those high-spirited seniors. To finish off the year we worked very hard and spent much money on a prom which turned out to be one of the hi-lites of the year. Add to this activity the fun we had together both in class and out, and if you don’t come up with a class which is the most daringly different, the most fun-loving, then at least we are the most populous. 17 Gerry Adams Glenn Adams Bruce Althaus Art Ambrose Gary Ames Carol Anderson Sharon Armstrong Terry Bailey Mary Barnard Kate Bartsoff Nick Bartsoff Wes Baughman Margaret Bennefield Jerry Bliege Barbara Boyd Chris Boyle Beverly Braden Velma Brill Suzi Brog Eugene Brown Karen Buchanan Bill Campbell Diane Card Dave Chilson Dorothy Classen Gary Collins Kathy Cock Paul Cooper Jerry Cox David Crace 18 Rodney Crace Jerry Curtiss Merry Curtiss Carol Davis Lynn Davis Gloria Davison Don DePiero Dan Doran Linda Domhecker Jim Dunn Richard Eames Wayne Eaves Dene Edwards Letha Embree Helga Fischer Jerry Fisher Mike Fisher Tim Fisher Larry Foster Pam Frazier Carolyn Friescn Pat Gambit Mary Garrison Richard Garrison LaDcll Gilmore Yvonne Gould Carl Green Neal Griffiths Jerry Grubbs Bob Haack 19 Charlene Hamilton Charlotte Hamilton Charisse Hayes Carolyn Henson Dennis Hibbeler Sally Hicks Ted Hill Cheryl Hilts David Hinds Alice Hoffman Donna Hoffman Charles Holbrook Eugene Howard Suzi Hunter Dudley Janeway Sally Janzen Judy Johnson Dick Jones Johni Keeler Jerry Kessen Patty Kcttleson Brad Klicvcr Bill Klievcr Phil Klicwcr Dave Kricr Shari LaMottc Paula Lane Richard Linn Dan Linschcid Jerry Littleton 70 Linda Loevven Kathy Lowe Charles McFarland Kathi McGee Richard McGlaughlin Roger Mannon Larry March Lois Marion Janice Mathena Kathi May Ken May Armilda Mercer Trudy Miller Walter Miller Sherry Mingo Juli Morison Larry Moore Larry Murray Dennis Needham Janice Nelsen Sharon Niggli Bill Ochs Judy Olfert Bill Ott Doug Page Steve Palmer Bob Pankratz Byron Perkins David Phillips Mike Phillips 21 Norma Pierce Faye Pitman Ada Pomeroy Lanny Pope Dean Potter Pam Povey Judy Rainwater Pam Randall Rodney Ratzlaff Jo Ray Clifford Reddig Monte Reimer Sally Reimer Janice Rempel Bonnie Richards Vicki Robinson Barbara Ross Willa Runkle Maeve Samsom Judy Scheirman DeAnn Schellenberg Albert Schierling Don Schrag LcRoy Schultz Ernie Seaman Mabel Sellers Vicki Shaffstall Walter Shearer Karen Simmons Bill Simons 22 Christine Smith Linda Smith Ralph Smith Sheryn Smith Elaine Snowden Shirley Spady Jerry Stoltz Lynda Stom Jeannette Story Mike Tallon David Taylor Ron Taylor Bob Teichrow Bob Thiessen Sheryl Thomas Jackie Thompson Sharon Tilgner Ferrell True Carol Turner Paul Voth Frank Vrell April Warkentin Bill Warkentin Paul Watkins Eloise Watson Jerry Watts Terri Webb Marvin Wiebe Gordon Wiens Ann Willson 23 Gilbert Wood Sue Woodbridge Bob Woodman Robin Woods Rosita Yoder Sybil Yeo Bob Yost Sue Yost Norman Young Donna Henson 24 SOPHOMORES SEATED: Geraldine Classen, Vice President, Bruce Snapp, Sergeant-at-arms, Gayla Dienm, Secretary, Sandy Robinson, Activity Rep. , Ann Starbuck, Treasurer, STANDING: Jim ottaway, President, Tom Quirin, Election Rep. With the help of our advisors, Mr. Lady, Mrs. Stafford, and Mr. Ward, we have gone over and straightened out most of the problems we have faced through this year. Our class put on the “Cotton and Cord” dance, and decorated for the Graduation and Baccalaureate. We have developed a kind of unity among students of our class that we know will last through the years. Since quite a few of our class were on the varsity teams through the last year, we expect our junior and senior years to be quite successful in the athletic programs. Our participation in other activities this year predicts a prominence in all school affairs. We will try to help the future sophomore classes develop a close relationship to the junior and senior classes of the coming years. Before he got acquainted with the newspaper staff, he had been quite puzzled by the behavior of humans, and had kept a journal on the subject. We are grateful to Simon for allowing us to publish here some excerpts from his journal, thereby giving us a rare opportunity to “see ourselves as others see us.“ - Ed.) Aug. 29 Uncle Sheridan was complaining today about the racket near his home in the workroom of the library. After a long, peaceful summer, there has been a sudden invasion of homo sapiens. It has been almost impossible to sleep until they leave at 5 p.m., and by then it is about time to get up. What strange habits these humans have! Cousin Sally in the front hall complains of their elephant-like tread and the loud noises they make with their mouths. 41 Sept. 9 Sally was here again, and reports that things have quieted down somewhat. The invaders seem to have developed a conditioned reflex in response to a system of bells. When the bell rings, they all rush around to different rooms. When the bell rings a second time, they sit down and rest. This rest period usually lasts long enough to get in a pretty good nap, she says. . Modern Problems Class Later Just heard from Sweeney in the back hall. Since he is a keen observer of natural phenomena, e look upon him as something of a scientist. He reports that these creatures have captured other animals and put them in cages. He hints of dark doings, and says he wouldn’t be caught in Room 31 for anything. Perhaps homo is not so harmless as he appears. Later As Sweeney was escaping from the horrors of Room 31, he says he found a very quiet refuge, even though surrounded by these huge creatures. They seemed to be under a spell induced by devices on their heads. Each was emitting a prayer-like mumble, probably some sort of religious ritual, he thinks. Sweeney is a great one to theorize. Technical Drawing Sept. 10 My older brother Sylvester, who lives in the music room, claims that the rest of us are all wrong about the invaders calming down. On the contrary, he says, they get louder every day, and their mouth noises are out of this world. He’s always exaggerating things, so we take anything he says with a grain of salt. Besides, he’s the Black Sheep of the family. Later Another activity of homo reported by Sweeney, which several of us have noticed: they use various kinds of sticks to make marks on paper. Sweeney says there is elaborate ritual and use of several kinds of sticks, often terminating with the individual crumpling up the marked paper and tossing it into a distant receptacle. Could this be some kind of sacrifice to their gods? He thinks we should make a study of them. Mixed Choir Sept. 11 Sally inclines to agree with Sweeney’s theories about the ritualistic behavior of this strange species. One of their number will stand on his hind legs and make mouth noises, while the others recline in their peculiar manner, on their posterior-dorsal surfaces with legs extended in all directions. Some are somnolescent, she says, while others join in the mouth noises, and many of them seem to be chewing their cud. I guess she’s on a scientific kick, like Sweeney. World History 43 Typing Class Sept. 12 Sweeney summoned all us musculi to an emergency meeting last night. It seems he happened into a different room yesterday and suddenly his eardrums were assaulted by a crashing, jangling racket made by the front paws of some 40 of the strange species pounding on things in front of them. Sweeney now thinks that there may have been some truth in Sylvester’s earlier report. However his motion that we make a systematic survey of homo’s behavior did not receive approval of a majority. Sept. 13 Just sent a rush moussage to all my relatives about the new invasion: hordes of “them” have arrived in the gym near my home, making such thunderous mouth noises as I have never heard before. I will vote for that motion of Sweeney’s now. What else can we do? The situation is desperate. Sept. 14 If I had not seen it with my own eyes in the gym, I would not have believed it. As if their mouth noises are not loud enough--these humans place shiny tubes in their mouths and magnify the volume thereby. We didn’t believe Sylvester when he first told us about it. He has moved from the music room to a smaller room nearby, where some dozens of blue cloth things are suspended in such a as to afford a hiding place in case of attack. They also muffle the din. He refuses to take part in the survey, not only because of the noise, but because his group of humans is obviously unbalanced. They go out in the fields in the rain at night! Even in his wild younger days, he didn’t go that far. Pep Assembly Cadet Teaching Vo-Ag class inspects farm machinery Sept. 15 Sweeney is going back on us. With all his scientific interest and ability, I thought he would be the last one to fail us. The trouble has to do with his sense of smell. One day he reported that the atmosphere in the back hall was so delectable he believed he had gone to heaven. The next day he reported that the odors made it impossible to keep food in his stomach. I wonder, is his ailment physical or mental? Anyway I don’t think we can depend on him for reliable reports. Sept. 16 My sister, Sue, who lives in the girls’ locker room, was missing for a few days, and has just come back. The other day she was having a little snack in a bag-like container where there were all kinds of interesting things to look at, when suddenly the bag was closed and she found herself being carried. The next time the bag opened, she was in a place full of humans, but of a much smaller variety than is common here. The food was good there, but after a few days she missed the candy that she could usually find at home, so she took the first opportunity to come back in the same bag. She reports that the small humans are even noisier than the large ones. Later Sam, a white mouse who travels around in Chemistry Lab a pouch in the clothing of one of the humans, claims they communicate with each other. What an idea! The poor things have no tails, and most of them don’t even move their ears. He claims they do it by mouth noises and movements of their anterior legs. He was telling about a trip he took the other day with his human and several others. The humans were looking at some large metal objects, and their mouth noises and paw-waving seemed to concern these objects. He reports that a group of field mice nearby were planning a sit-in demonstration because the metal objects are used to destroy their homes. For his part, Sam says, he is well treated and regards his human almost with affection. Sept. 17 Sally has been telling me that there are writers among the humans who get together in room 8. As I am a writer myself, I decided to investigate, although they meet well past my usual hour to retire. Some of the female humans were rather unfriendly, but most of them made me feel welcome. Anyone who can write, and who is willing to “cover a beat,” as they say, is persona grata there. I am doing a feature for the next issue of their newspaper, Dragon Tales. Journalism Oct. 1 My first piece in Dragon Tales was a success, and I am to be a regular feature writer with my own bi-line. Awkward and noisy as they are, these humans have some redeeming qualities. They are receptive to new ideas, and most of them can learn when they want to. They are good-natured in an uncritical way, but somewhat short on creative imagination. The strange thing is that they think of us primarily as economic parasites; and of course we are dependent on them in this respect. Perhaps through my column I can raise the level of their culture to the point where they can appreciate wit and critical thinking as more important values. 46 Physics Class STUDENT TEACHERS SEATED: Rudy Sonnen, Rod Collins, Bruce Thompson, John Patterson. STANDING: Ron Anderson, Jerry Finnigan, Pat McDermott. Our school is fortunate to be near teacher training institutions. Because of our location we have had many student teachers from those institutions. This year found 19 students from OCE and two from OSU who were learning on the spot. The seven pictured above came to us from OCE spring term. This program has been of benefit not only to the student teachers but it has afforded interesting contacts for high school students who are thinking about teaching as a profession. Another program along the same line is Cadet Teaching, which offers high school students a chance to try out the profession. Highpoint of this year's competition was the 10-inning baseball game with McMinnville, ending in a victory which gave the Dragons first place in the TYV western division. But other sports also offered moments of accomplishment for the performers and excitement for the onlookers. 83 JV FOOTBALL ROW 1: Doug Hunter, Manager; James Chaney, Mike Jones, Mike Kettleson, Keith Darby, Jerry Clack, Richard Villwock, Charles Bennett. Wrestling With only three boys over 160 pounds, and none in the heavyweight class, the season Varsity record showed one win and 12 losses, as the matmen entered each meet with a 20-point handicap because of this shortage. Many matches were considerably closer than that. Dragon grapplers placed 8th in District, with Keith D arby and Bob Green winning thirds; and three others - Joe Fay, Mike Jones, and Dean Potter - being eliminated in the semi-finals. With a team composed of 7 sophomores and 1 junior, the Dallas golfers, plagued consistently by interference, finished the TYV season with a record of 1 win, 6 losses, and 1 tie. The high point of the season for the Dallas team was the upset victory over top-ranked Forest Grove 6-4 at Oak Knoll. The Grovers went on to place third in the district tournament. The Dragons, under the guidance of Dennis Spenser, missed a state tournament berth by a mere 5 strokes in district competition and in doing so offered much encouragement for the 1964-65 golf team.
