Six seniors, all girls, received diplomas. There were, however seven at the first of the year, but the one only boy dropped out before graduation. This page is a salute to these first graduates as well as the progress of the institution in the half century. For the fourth time Dallas was fortunate enough to entertain a student through the American Field Service Organization. Edna Schneider, whose home is in Santiago, Chile lived with the Elton Salisburys while here. Edna is sincere in her expressed belief that the American Field Service program is invaluable in establishing friendly feeling , and developing understanding between nations. The 1961 Dallas football team was one of the best in the history of Dallas High School. They were just one point shy of being the TYV league champions, the stumbling block being a hard fought 7 to 6 loss to Tillamook. The team was tremendous on defense being led by Steve Grimes, Chuck Friesen, and Mike Hiebert. Good offensive punch was provided with Jerry Benson and Irv Staats carrying the ball and the clocking of Darrell Baller. This record is however, misleading in that the spring rains caused the cancellation of several im- portant games. Dallas did defeat North Salem in a close 4-2 contest, and tied South Salem 10-10. Dallas overcame the three-time western division champion, Forest Grove, in their first 'league game. The Orange and Black rolled over Till- amook, McMinnville, and Newberg to decisively capture the T. Y. V. play off berth against the northern division winner. But the Dragons lost a hard fought 3-2 decision in the play-off with Oswego. There were several outstanding individuals on the senior-dominated club. john Brawley, Chuck Friesen, and Steve Martens were chosen T. Y. V. All-Stars. Several others had high batting averages.
