1 Henry Hicks never was a fair weather sailor, which is just as well for Dalhousie, because a weaker per- sonality could not have put the university into the top flight of Canadian higher education. Yes, he enjoyed the respite of the calm periods: but he was practical enough to recognize that there would be times of controversy, both within and without. And when controversy arose, Henry Hicks not only stood firm, but took action, more determinedly than ever if he believed that what he and the university were doing was right. As one writer said of him, He rushes his fences as though they were not there. Dr. Hicks was born on March 5, 1915 in Bridgetown, NIS. That one of his ancestors was active in public life more than two centuries ago may have had something to do with Henry Hicks bent for law and learning and public life. The ancestor, a Rhode Island Quaker and pre-Loyalist immigrant, was in 1759 one of the original grantees of Falmouth township, who later moved to Granville and was a member of the Nova Scotia Legislature. -- NN .Q . . 5 ,.,W ,Qt ,vs X
