X Dalhousie University Halifax, Nova Scotia Pharos 1980 ffiff mm D QR if LT' '- DALHOUSIE UNIVERSITY HALIFAX,N S, B3H 4H6 s cs TO THE CLASS OF 1980 As I shall be giving you the Presidency of Dalhousie University a few months after you graduate, it occurred to me to look up the 1937 PHAROS to see what was said forty-two years ago when I left Dalhousie as a student, after having acquired my second Bachelor's degree. In a message to the graduates in Arts and Science Dr. C.B. Nickerson included the following words, which I think are still appropriate forty-two years later: HReal education can result only from a post- graduate course in life. We have endeavoured to supply you with the equipment which should make that course relatively easy: easier for you than for the less fortunate ones who have not enjoyed your advantages.n Perhaps I have not taken much time to philosophize in the past seventeen years that I have been President. With the strong support of the Board of Governors, chaired by Dr. Donald Mclnnes-for the whole of this period up to April 30th of this year, and with the co-operations from alumni, business, government, and friends of Dalhousie, my efforts have been primarily directed to improving our teaching and research staff, and providing the physical facilities to enable a good university education to be secured by an additional five thousand students. This amounts to an increse of about 200 percent during the years of my Presidency. I believe we have been successful in maintaining the. quality of our staff and our physical facilities. In leaving Dalhousie to begin your Hpostgraduate work in life? I hope you will remember that the vision and sacrifice of many people, including your parents, has given you the uequipmentn for a good start. Yours sincerely, I .f sf' X ..- if , , I 'I ! I Mi I Dr. Henry D. Hicks President and Vice-Chancellor Hem' D. Hicks For a man who said 'No' to the first offer of the Arts and Science Deanship at Dalhousie, who was later approached by a group of faculty and, in effect, warned off the university, who, three years later. on being offered the presidency was then invited by a committee of the Board of Governors to sign an undertaking not to get involved in politics land unhesitatingly declined the invitationj, Henry Davies Hicks weathered two decades at Dalhousie remarkably well. Dalhousie, too, did remarkably well under his driving leadership, being transformed from what the in- stitutional advertising of the 19505 called The Small College by the Sea into the S70-million-a-year, multi- facultied university which today ranks with the best in Canada. Vtfhen, in the distant future, the history of the university is updated, it will record that in its long land early chequeredj life, Dalhousie's most important period was during the 1960s and 1970s, and that Dr. Henry D. Hicks will rank as the greatest leader the university has had. fs xx 2 tl fr . faqs ,.1.,.,..!C Q 'Q 'X We 'K 9' i FM 'wa My , , ,il ., K uv 1 eq F 1' I fi gb? .,... 5 , I W 3 1. Yes, he enjoyed the respite of the calm periods: but he was practical enough to recognize that there would be times of controversy, both within and without. And when controversy arose, Henry Hicks not only stood firm, but took action, more determinedly than ever if he believed that what he and the university were doing was right. As one writer said of him, He rushes his fences as though they were not there. Dr. Hicks was born on March 5, 1915 in Bridgetown, NIS. That one of his ancestors was active in public life more than two centuries ago may have had something to do with Henry Hicks bent for law and learning and public life. The ancestor, a Rhode Island Quaker and pre-Loyalist immigrant, was in 1759 one of the original grantees of Falmouth township, who later moved to Granville and was a member of the Nova Scotia Legislature. -- NN .Q . . 5 ,.,W ,Qt ,vs X Educated in Bridgetown, Mount Allison University, Dalhousie and Oxford, Henry Hicks was a good chemistry student, but after winning a Rhodes scholarship and arriving at Oxford, turned to law. His university days were not all work. At Mount Allison he was a good track man, and at Oxford was active in ice hockey, rowing and mountaineering. As president of the Oxford Rowing Club he organized the first wartime Oxford-Cambridge Board Race, and at one stage was cox of the Oxford crew. After war service as a radar officer in Europe, Dr. Hicks began a law practice in Bridgetown and became Liberal Member for Annapolis County in the Legislature. He was the province's first Minister of Education, serving also as Provincial Secretary and Premier l1954-561. He was Opposition Leader from 1956 to 1960, when he lost his Annapolis seat. Henry Hicks was on the verge of joining a Halifax law firm when his predecessor, the late Dr. A.E. Kerr, in- vited him to become Dean of Arts and Science. At first he said 'No' but some members of the Board of Governors painted an interesting picture of the prospects if I came. So I came and I've not been sorry. In 1972 he was appointed to the Senate of Canada, and unlike the reaction to his joining Dalhousie, no one objected this time. Dr. Hicks took over the presidency in 1963, at a time of rapid growth, and immediately embarked on the biggest building program Dalhousie has had, a program to cope with the then tremendous enrolment boom. I think really I have not been a planner so much as I've been a pragmatic doer of the things that seemed to be necessary, he says today. A pragmatic, forthright, doer he has been - and more. An intellectual with a love of good jazz and the music and words of the Beatles, an Oscar Wilde fan, a salmon angler and rod-maker of note, a stamp collector, a cabinet-maker lthe furniture kindj, Henry Hicks is a master of many trades and jack of none. His departure as president may mean that he will be missed, by students, faculty and administrators alike. But he will not be forgotten, for everywhere on campus the products of his drive as a builder and leader are much in evidence - the residence extensions, the library, the Arts Centre, the Life Sciences Centre, the Tupper building and so on are all monuments to the Hicks era. This College of Halifax is founded for the in- struction of youth in the higher Classics and in all Philosophical studies, it is formed in imitation of the University of Edinburghg its doors will be open to all who profess the Christian religiong to the youth of His Majesty's North American Colonies, to strangers residing here, to gentlemen of the military as well as the learned professions, to all, in short, who may be disposed to devote a small part of their time to study. It does not oppose the King's College at Windsor, because it is well known that college does not admit any students unless they subscribe to the tests required by the Established Church of England, and these tests exclude the great proportion of youth in this province. COLLEGE In 1917 George Ramsay, ninth Earl of Dalhousie and Governor of Nova Scotia, determined to found a college that would be open to any student regardless of class or creed. Although Nova Scotia boasted a college at Windsor, the exam required effectively excluded large segments of the population. The funds used to begin construction were the customs duties acquired by the British during their occupation of Castine in 1814. The original site of the college was the Grand Parade where the Halifax City Hall now stands. The buildings were ready for occupation in 1823, however the college still had many unsolved problems. Not only had the professors not been chosen, but the early supporters of the college were apprehensive, believing King's College was sufficient. As a result, the college served as a com- munity centre from 1829 to 1838. Two attempts to amalgamate the two colleges failed. Eventually the college came into its own opening its doors in 1838. Dalhousie offered only three chairs on opening: Classical Languages, Mathematics and Natural Philosophy. The first class consisted of only twelve students. Courses lasted four yearsg tuition was between S6 and 524. ' 1, g V xt ,, ,xt- -v,,, ' -'I' xf..-,,,V V ,i . - --C, v ,lt - g I Q . - 1 - U 8 ' - Q f' Y- if I 3 . 'NVQ-.-9, 1 4. of Almost a week of craziness overtook campus during this year's winter carnival. Flake Out '80 included something for everyone. There was the Rocky Horror Picture Show for the lunatics, a tug-of-war for the musclebound, the usual Super Sub for rowdies, plus countless other hilarities. The lack of the annual 'beer bash' had little effect upon the well coordinated efforts of both Chris Tilley and Kevin Feindel. Thanks! The Super Sub was again quite popular. Hnmdreds of fine up- standing students in various stages of intoxication, gathered together for a gigantic seige upon the Student Union Building to partake in the festivities. All present, providing they were coherent, saw The Iarvis Bennoit Band, Buddy and the Boys, and Ariel. Everyone staggered home happily. October of 1979 the first coal-fired anerating unit at Lingan became Jerational. The second unit will begin 'oduction this fall, Together, these wits will require 800,000 tons of Cape retoh coal annually, This use of 'coal power' twhich will replace more than 3 million barrels of oil each yearl is but one indication of the Corporations realistic approach to the problem of reducing our reliance on offshore oil. nova scotia power corporation i i X A X X X N X ix +R , -2 + .. - ? ......,....... , Photography 'F ',,. .a,,v I- 43, 5 '3 . This yearbook is a record of your beginning in lifeg something we hope you will save untill the end when you can look upon it with fond memories. The staff at Pharos have also Worked hard this past year in order that we may produce this book for you. I ask that you treat this book with care throughout the years to come. Like fine wines and cheese, you'll find that a yearbook becomes better with age. In a book of this scope, errors will inevitably occur I apologize for any mistakes that are made where you are concerned and hope that you will take into consi- deration the fact that we are a volunteer staff doing the best we can do.
