The youth have an urge to get out of the rat-race that our parents and the older generations are in. We, the youth, have been brought up with the concept that all there is to life is work. We have watched our parents work just to survive until they are ready to fall over dead. The youth have tried to get out where they can enjoy life. We feel that after being pressured through high school and our teens, we are not ready to go to col- lege or war or a job. We are not given an opportunity to stop and think for ourselves and we know not what we want to do. The period of time between graduation from high school and going out in the world on your own, I will call a time of finding your self through self-expression . During this period a person does what he believes in and goes in his own direction. This time of self-expression then becomes a key to the way this person will live and what he will do with his life. 6 Theme Actions are a means of self expression. It is something that means success in this rat-race called society. Everyone had to do it by himself, because there are no two people alike. Everyone has a different need and want out of life. This means that everyone would have a different key . No one knows what to do all the time so that everything comes out right. This takes patience and time and experiments on the youths party and it takes a lot of patience on the part of the parents and the older generations. The youth of today are doing no worse than the older people did twenty or thirty years earlier. The Key means success. 10 Theme f,g:fs: -f :Q ,.-ff-- f 'f:-:1ws .f,s 'ff-. fm Theme 11 .Q ww fa, 1: ,.,.,. :mi-f, :f Theme 13 We are taking a big step Self-expression can be seen in many places in this day and age. Some of the places are: schools, homes, beaches, on stages, colleges, and in Viet Nam. This young set of people have their own ideas and plans for the future. They find it hard to talk to older peo- ple who do not listen. They become frustrated and they find another way to get people's attention. This leads to the disorders on college campuses and the protests, and the marches. These controversial ways of attracting attention are not new. They have been around since the beginning of time. The object that seems to have made them stand out is that they have succeeded in getting people's attention. This is the first big step in bringing peace and tranquility in the United States as well as the world. :eminemmmm:eeswaaffwaseamssmwssissufgff-Ivif-WwaHatQawasx 5amawmn9nwamfimaz,asaaav:seam:A:wr:s1:s:1:m Theme 15 16 Academics Academics Administration Mrs. Perkins, secretary. 18 Academics The superintendent, the school board and the prin- cipal are the men who guide our school in its functions. Their job is not an easy one. lt is their re- sponsibility to establish policies for the school and recognize and accept new ideas and policies if they are reasonable and necessary. The principal is more directly involved with the problems of students and he must be willing to help them become mature' and well informed young adults. Academics 23 To the dislike of some students, English is the most needed and important subject in high school cur- riculums. The course is required for freshmen, sophomores and juniors. It is also offered to the seniors, which prepares them for college English. Equipping the student for his further communica- tion needs, the English courses emphasized self- expression and creativity. Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors were taught the fundamentals of gram- mar and composition. They were also introduced to English and American literature and its influence on the world. Speech classes provided the needed experience in relating ideas effectively. Ease and confidence for public speaking were also stressed. Providing the student with different media to help him in his studies, the library was used extensively as a study and resource center. English and F Mrs. Muriel Wessol, B.S. Academics 25 History, Math and Science The Biology Dept., under the guidance of Mr. Kirk- ham, has added a new area of study. The 23 students of the Advanced Biology class undertook individual projects for a semester requirement. The students utilized biological research techniques in experi- menting with various plants and animals. The proj- ects included studying the learning processes of mice, addiction of guinea pigs to drugs, and the influence of light on the growth of plants. Mr. Hockenberry tried a new approach to teaching his Senior economics and sociology classes this year by introducing the students to independent study. Each class set its own goals and then worked toward them. The sociology class directed their attention to examining the judicial system. They established a mock court and tried several cases and as a result became more aware of the procedures and problems of running a court. On February thirteenth, 1971, Daleville held its an- nual Homecoming event, highlighted bythe selection of the Homecoming queen. The Valentine theme was carried out by eye-catching red and white decorations. The candidates for this ornate affair were selected by the members of their class. These representatives were escorted to the stage where the new queen was crowned by the out-going queen elected the pre- vious year. Each representative was escorted by a male member of her class whom she personally selected. Since only senior or junior girls are all- owed to win the coveted crown, the sophomore and freshman classes were allowed to elect one girl each as princesses. If the decision was to be made on looks alone there could have been no winner. All the candidates and the princesses looked lovely. The big moment came and Miss Pam Clements became this year's reigning queen. The presentation of the crown and roses was made by pres. Connie tHenkleJ Stinson who was escorted by jeff Stinson. Much joy came with the announcement, not only from Pam but from all the people who attended the festivities that night. Kathi Rench, junior Attendant, finds a secluded spot to meditate. Activities 55 The 86 boys and girls enrolled in a total of 19 differ- ent projects of the Salem Township 4-H club worked hard this year to make the best better. Salem Township had the largest number of beef cattle at the Delaware County Fair. Two-thirds of the cattle from our county shown at the Indiana State Fair were from Salem Township. The 4-H year started with a kick-off Banquet held in the high school cafeteria in March. One of the seven regularly scheduled meetings was a field trip to Ball State's Christy Woods to study the trees and flowers. In july the annual Salem Township 4-H Fair was held on the high school grounds. Approximately 900!o of the members exhibited at this show and their pro- jects were judged, placed, and given ribbons. This fair is the largest township fair in this area and serves to prepare the members for the larger Delaware County Fair. At the County Fair, Salem Township 4-Hers won more honors than any other single town- ship. Several members went on to win state and national awards. Members of the Daleville High School Chorus had many opportunities to perform this year. ln Septem- ber, at the P.T.O. Ice Cream Social, the chorus sang selections of Downtown , Moon River, and How High the Moon . For their next performance the chorus traveled to Ball State to sing in a combined chorus at Emens Auditorium. They sang with the Muncie Youth Sym- phony. They also presented a short program for the Music Boosters and participated in the annual Christmas Sing. Bariety Show 1971 was the main highlight of the year for the chorus. lt was the third annual show that the Music Department had presented. The money earned went for new risers. The final performance of 1971 was given at Wabash High School on April 26. The reason for this was that the Wabash High School Chorus visited our school last and then invited our chorus to perform at their school. The performance at Wabash was very suc- cessful. embers of High School Chorus are from left: Doreen 'Dell, Susie Schlegel, jo Schlegel, Linda Crosley, Neila odson, Bev Ballard, Susan Rowland, Anita Alfrey, Miss lowlin. Working as a team, we had our ups and downs. Every hard working group has to have its fun and the staff of 1971 was no exception, keeping the halls occupied during sixth period every day. The symbol chosen this year is on the cover of our book. This is a combination of the peace symbol, arrows of direction, and a starting point, a star. The peace symbol is used to represent the human race and the peace that it is striving for. The arrows are to symbolize an individual that likes to do his own thing in his own way. The star represents a place where every thing starts and also a place where everything is tied together in unity. This symbol can be used to represent the people of today. The symbol has a lot of deep meaning, just as the people of to- day have meaning. : Pictures and Words b Da Capo This year the Daleville High School newspaper staff changed the name of the paper. For many years the paper had been called The Tattler, but in the last two years there had been a growing dissatisfaction with this name. Tattler denotes someone who tattles or tells when someone else makes a mistake. The staff felt that this name did not adequately represent the goals or intentions of their paper. They felt that the school paper should represent the students and how they feel. For these reasons, the name of the paper was changed to Dig It! in the hopes that it could be some- thing that the students could dig. Along with the new name, there was a new advisor for the newspaper, Miss Violet Schonhardt. Mi s Schonhardt sponsored the Dig lt this year The Tattler Becomes Dig lt! Many improvements and changes have been made this year by our new librarian, Mrs. Ann Henkle. The most significant addition was the very popular and widely used paperback rack. Since students are the primary users of the Library, as much requested material as possible was ordered for them. As a further break away from tradition, color and eye appeal were added with pictures, bulletin boards, and displays of reading material. The 11 Library assistants and 6 audiovisual aides who participated in the volunteer program this year gained valuable experience by assisting others. ll .ssistants are from left: Ilene Rees, Patty Rowe, judi Hall, Jacque Coffin, janet Pittsford. At the beginning of the year a space program was presented by AEC. The Seniors presented a Christmas program with all Seniors sitting on the gym floor singing carols. joe Harris, a state police- man, talked to the whole student body about drugs. Mr. Bayer presented his wrestlers to the students after two of his boys had won the sec- tional. One of the last convocations was sponsored by Campus Life, featuring the Trust Company. This year's record for the dual meets was two and six, but considering that all the area schools were unusually strong, we didn't do too badly. Other underclassmen that should help the team next year will be Rick Haulter, Rod Davis, and Tom Allen. Coach Phil Hodson is very optimistic about the fu- ture teams in this sport. Coach Hodson said that even though we didn't win many meets he still en- joyed coaching the boys, because they had all worked very hard. Managers Mark and Dave show their usefulness. The team's record was 7 and 5, but among the teams that the team did defeat were many undefeated teams. All the schools that defeated us were schools much larger than D.H.S. Some of the teams that defeated us during the season were defeated by our Broncos in the sectional. For the first time a County wrestling meet was held. The Broncos put up a good fight, but fell short. The margin of defeat was only one match. The Broncs came in second however, and walked away with 5 County Champions. The team did retain the Conference Championship by scoring 114 points with eight different champions. The Broncos went to the sectional very confident that they could make a good showing. Mr. Bayer's grapplers did make a good showing, as they placed third and had two sectional champs, Mike Emenhiser and jim Miller. This year the first 4-year wrestlers finished their high school careers. They were Randy Tharp, Pj Wilson, and the first 4-year letterman, Sam Swinford. All three of these men had very good seasons. Randy posted a 9 and 3 record and was Conference champ for two years. Pj's record was 16, 3, and 1 and he won the County and repeated his Conference win for the second time. Sam had a 19 and 2 record while winning the County and his second Conference Championship. Next year might prove to be an even better year, with hopes and dreams of a State Cham- pion. This task proved to be impossible as their season record was the same as last years. One of their many problems was falling behind in one of their quarters and then having to fight back in the remaining quarters to make up for their cold quarter. joe Scott was the leading scorer followed closely by Rob Hale. Along with being the leading scorer, joe had the best free-throw per- centage and accumulated the most rebounds. Rob Hale was second for grabbing rebounds and Chris Hutton was third. Mike Brown, who was only able to play about half of the season, because of a bad ankle, had the best field goal percentage. The broncos proved that they were improving, as they defeated Wapahani later in the season after being beaten by them earlier in the county tourney. It is hoped that these boys will be able to bring basketball back to Daleville next year and we are quite sure that they should be capable of it. Competition was very close in all of their games and they were only beaten by more than three points twice. Everyone that was on the team got to play quite often and that proves that the team was balanced. Although there are only seven boys in the team picture, there were twelve boys that played for the freshmen. Many of the boys on the team were altered back and forth to the B-team, which made it hard for the team to become accustomed to.
