Her well written, thoughtful essay which earned her a week's stay in Washington was also published in the September 13, 1965, issue of the Congressional Record. Voice of Democracy Winner I f?f 'f f'1i? c 'N-V .li . ff, Voice of Democracy Candidates ALICIA UMANSKI A very spontaneous, happy . smile breaks out on the face of our South American friend, Alicia, whenever you meet or talk to her. At sixteen, she is very interested in art and she studies ceramics, which she also teaches in her home. Alice says that one of the things which she misses is going to the theatre. She likes movies, stage shows, and concerts. Her clothing and dress is similar to ours, yet she says they dress more conservatively. Colors are not as loud or viberant as ours. Her future plans are to go to the University to study philos- ophy. Before arriving in Daleville she toured the eastern part of the United States for a month visiting all of the major places of interest. Of all the sites, she said that Washington was her favorite because it was so clean and did not have any light or telephone wires. On her visit here, Alice commented, I enjoy the stay here with my family Exchange Students af 1, N V A ,32?iw i aixwf, ffiw' A' N yi. , .Rr .- JORGE JAY BLANC I am very happy here and not anxious to leave. I have a wonderful family here. Every- thing has been O. K. , said Jay. Studious, serious, eager to learn, observant, and gra- cious are the characteristics of this young man of nineteen. Jay likes golf, tennis, and swimming. He likes our basket- ball and thinks it is very excit- ing, although he would not like to participate. Basketball is played in Argentina, but they do not have cheer leaders and pep clubs. I His interest in art has led him to choose an architectural career. He intends to study at the National University in Buenos Aires and wants to spe- cialize in home design because he feels this is a need of his country. Jay is quite impressed with our community spirit. This spirit of people working to- gether was unfamiliar to him, but he thought it was wonderful. PENNY GARDNER I had dreamed many times of being able to make a trip to a Spanish speaking country and then one day my dream started to become real. During sum- mer vacation I was a foreign exchange student with the newly formed organization called Inter -A merican Cultural Exchange. My family's name was Botte. My father, Migull Botte, a busy surgeon, Ida Botte, my mother, was a wonderful cook and as sweet as could be. I had a sister, Elina, who was twenty and had been in this same exchange program two years ago. She is now teaching English. I had always wanted a brother and for nine weeks I had one by the name of Ed- wardo. He was sixteen and in his junior year so I attended school with him. l only wish that everyone could participate in an exper- ience like mine.
